Abstract:Creating crystalline porous materials with large pores is typically challenging due to undesired interpen-etration, staggered stacking, or weakened framework stability. Here, we report a pore size expansion strategy by self-recognizing π-π stacking interactions in a series of two-dimensional (2D) hydrogen–bonded organic frameworks (HOFs), HOF-10x (x=0,1,2), self-assembled from pyrene-based tectons with systematic elongation of π-conjugated molecular arms. This strategy successfully avoids interpene-tration or staggered stacking and expands the pore size of HOF materials to access mesoporous HOF-102, which features a surface area of ~ 2,500 m2/g and the largest pore volume (1.3 cm3/g) to date among all reported HOFs. More importantly, HOF-102 shows significantly enhanced thermal and chemical stability as evidenced by powder x-ray diffraction and N2 isotherms after treatments in chal-lenging conditions. Such stability enables the adsorption of dyes and cytochrome c from aqueous media by HOF-102 and affords a processible HOF-102/fiber composite for the efficient photochemical detox-ification of a mustard gas simulant.

Abstract:Deciphering rich non-covalent interactions that govern many chemical and biological processes is crucial for the design of drugs and controlling molecular assemblies and their chemical transformations. However, real-space characterization of these weak interactions in complex molecular architectures at the single bond level has been a longstanding challenge. Here, we employed bond-resolved scanning probe microscopy combined with an exhaustive structural search algorithm and quantum chemistry calculations to elucidate multiple non-covalent interactions that control the cohesive molecular clustering of well-designed precursor molecules and their chemical reactions. The presence of two flexible bromo-triphenyl moieties in the precursor leads to the assembly of distinct non-planar dimer and trimer clusters by manifold non-covalent interactions, including hydrogen bonding, halogen bonding, C-H⋯π and lone pair⋯π interactions. The dynamic nature of weak interactions allows for transforming dimers into energetically more favourable trimers as molecular density increases. The formation of trimers also facilitates thermally-triggered intermolecular Ullmann coupling reactions, while the disassembly of dimers favours intramolecular cyclization, as evidenced by bond-resolved imaging of metalorganic intermediates and final products. The richness of manifold non-covalent interactions offers unprecedented opportunities for controlling the assembly of complex molecular architectures and steering on-surface synthesis of quantum nanostructures.
Engineering the Dynamic Hydrogen Bonds in Π-Stacked Supramolecular Assemblies for Hierarchical Nanocrystal Formation

Abstract:Selectively engineering the dynamic bonds in supramolecular assemblies stabilized by cooperative weak interactions is challenging yet critical to modulate their spatial organizations and stimuli-responsive behaviors. This study presents a novel class of crystalline polyphenol assemblies hierarchically regulated by the interplay of pi-pi stacking and reconfigurable hydrogen bonds (H-bonds). Oriented structural reorganization of the crystalline assemblies to low-dimensional nanocrystals, accompanied by structural "self-correction", could be achieved by selectively engineering the dynamic H-bond interfaces. Specifically, 1D ultrafine nanofibers could be generated via a shear force-driven H-bond interface sliding, followed by the pi-stacking directed "end-to-end" fusion of the supramolecular stacks. Meanwhile, 2D nanobelts could be obtained by introducing metal coordination to disintegrate the dynamic H-bond networks while unzipping the lamellar crystalline assemblies. In particular, the flexible 1D nanofibers and 2D nanobelts preserved molecular order with favorable electronic and band structures, exhibiting dimension-dependent fluorescence emission and metal cation-induced quenching. This study provided new insights into the structure-function relationship of polyphenol supramolecular assemblies that governs their spatial organization and dynamic response. Besides, the strategy to selectively engineer the dynamic H-bond interfaces for structural reorganization of crystalline supramolecular assemblies might be exploited as a "top-down" approach to fabricate flexible low-dimensional nanocrystals for multifunctional applications.
Enhanced Π–π Stacking Between Dipole-Bearing Single Molecules Revealed by Conductance Measurement

Abstract:Dipoles are widely involved in π-π interactions and are central to many chemical and biological functions, but their influence on the strength of π-π interactions remains unclear. Here, we report a study of π-π interaction between azulene-based, polar single molecules and between naphthalene-based, nonpolar single molecules. By performing scanning tunneling microscopy break junction measurements of single-molecule conductance, we show that the π-stacked dimers formed by the azulene-based, polar aromatic structures feature higher electrical conductivity and mechanical stability than those formed by the naphthalene-based, nonpolar molecules. Mechanical control of π-π interactions in both rotational and translational motion reveals a sensitive dependence of the stacking strength on relative alignment between the dipoles. The antiparallel alignment of the dipoles was found to be the optimal stacking configuration that underpins the observed enhancement of π-π stacking between azulene-based single molecules. Density functional theory calculations further explained the observed enhancement of stacking strength and the corresponding charge transport efficiency. Our experimental and theoretical results show that the antiparallel alignment of the dipole moments significantly enhances the electronic coupling and mechanical stability of π-π stacking. In addition, in the formation of single-molecule junctions, the azulene group was experimentally and theoretically proved to form a Au-π contact with electrodes with high charge transport efficiency. This paper provides evidence and interpretation of the role of dipoles in π-π interactions at the single-molecule level and offers new insights into potential applications in supramolecular devices.

Abstract:Non-covalent interactions such as hydrogen bonding and π-π stacking are very important type of interactions governing molecular self-assembly. The π-π stacking ability of aromatic rings depends on the electron density of the π orbitals, which is affected by the electron-withdrawing or electron-donating properties of the substituents. We have here studied the effect of hydrogen bonding on the strength of the π-π stacking interactions by calculating the binding energies at the explicit correlated Møller-Plesset (MP2-F12) perturbation theory level using triple-ζ polarization quality basis sets. The stacking interactions in the presence of hydrogen bonding are found to be stronger than in the absence of the hydrogen bonding suggesting that hydrogen bonds lead to π depletion, which affects the aromatic character of the aromatic rings and increases the strength of the π-π stacking interaction. We have also studied how hydrogen bonding affects the stacking interaction by calculating local orbital locator integrated pi over plane (LOLIPOP) indices. Comparing LOLIPOP indices with the stacking-interaction energies calculated at the MP2-F12 level shows that there is no clear correlation between the stacking-interaction energies and LOLIPOP indices.

Abstract:The stacking interactions between FH--N hydrogen-bonded foldamers 1-3, bis-foldamer 4, and tris-foldamer 5 and C(60) and C(70) are described. Compound 4 contains two folded units, which are connected by an isophthalamide linker, whereas 5 has a C(3)-symmetrical discotic structure, in which three folded units are connected by a benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamide unit. UV/Vis, fluorescence, and NMR experiments have revealed that the foldamers or folded units strongly stack with fullerenes in chloroform. The (apparent) association constants of the respective complexes have been determined by a fluorescence titration method. The strong association is tentatively attributed to intermolecular cooperative fluorophenylpi and solvophobic interactions. A similar but weaker interaction has also been observed between an MeOH--N hydrogen-bonded foldamer and fullerenes. AFM studies have revealed that the surfaces of 3 and 4 show fibrous networks, while the surface of 5 shows particles. In sharp contrast, mixtures of 3 and 4 with C(60) have been shown to generate thinner separated fibrils, whereas a mixture of 5 and C(60) produces honeycomb-like nano networks, for which a columnar cooperative stacking pattern is proposed. The results demonstrate the usefulness of FH--N hydrogen-bonded folded structures in the construction of nanoscaled materials.
Substituent and heteroatom effects on parallel-displaced pi-stacking: Further evidence that short-range pi-pi interactions are not under electrostatic control

Abstract:Stacking interactions are a recurring motif in supramolecular chemistry and biochemistry, where a persistent theme is a preference for parallel-displaced aromatic rings over face-to-face pi-stacking. The Hunter-Sanders model purports to explain this preference in terms of quadrupolar electrostatics but that interpretation is inconsistent with accurate quantum-mechanical calculations. Here, we apply symmetry-adapted perturbation theory to dimers composed of substituted benzene and to dimers of heterocycles including pyridine, pyrimidine, triazine, and thiophene. These systems display a wide range of electrostatic interactions, allowing us to investigate the generality of an alternative explanation for offset pi-stacking in which this phenomenon is driven by competition between Pauli repulsion and dispersion, not by electrostatics. Profiles of energy components along cofacial slip-stacking coordinates support this "van der Waals" model, even in cases where dipolar forces are significant. We find no evidence to support continued invocation of the Hunter-Sanders or quadrupolar electrostatics model. Our results suggest that chemical substitutions that primarily affect electrostatic interactions are unlikely to alter the short-range driving forces that contribute to offset-stacking. This has implications for rational design of soft materials and other supramolecular architectures.

Abstract:Supramolecular nanocages with inner cavities have attracted increasing attention due to their fascinating molecular aesthetics and vast potential applications. Even though a wide array of discrete supramolecular cages with precisely designed sizes and shapes have been established, the controlling assembly of higher-order supramolecular frameworks from discrete molecular entities still represents a formidable challenge. In this work, a novel metallo-organic cage [Zn12L4] was assembled based on triphenylene-cored hexapod terpyridine ligand. The Synchrotron X-Ray analysis revealed a pair of enantiomeric cages in the crystal with the flexible ligands twist clockwise or anticlockwise due to the steric hindrance in the structure. Interestingly, due to the strong π-π intermolecular interaction between triphenylene units, the hierarchical packing of sphere-like cage in the crystal was controlled as a sparse packing mode with huge channels around 3.6 nm. This research sheds light on the design of strong π-π interaction in supramolecular hierarchical packing and material science.

Abstract:Aromatic stacking has played a significant role in the design of discrete supramolecular systems. However, for many years, the stacking of conjugated radical cations has been considered only as a novelty due to its weakness. In recent years, it has been demonstrated that the stacking of conjugated radical cations, particularly those formed by bipyridinium or tetrathiafulvalene, can be enhanced remarkably when they are incorporated into rationally designed, preorganized frameworks or entrapped into a confined space. This Focus Review highlights the recent advance in its application as an emerging non-covalent force for the construction of various supramolecular structures.

Abstract:Modulating the arrangement of superstructures through noncovalent interactions has a significant impact on macroscopic shape and the expression of unique properties. Constructing π-interaction-driven hierarchical three-dimensional (3D) superstructures poses challenges on account of limited directional control and weak intermolecular interactions. Here we report the construction of a 3D diamondoid superstructure, named π-Diamond, employing a ditopic strained Z-shaped building block comprising a porphyrin unit as bow-limb double-strapped with two m-xylylene units as bowstring. This superstructure, reminiscent of diamond's tetrahedral carbon composition, is composed of double-walled tetrahedron (DWT) driven solely by π-interactions. Hetero-π-stacking between porphyrin and m-xylylene panels drive the assembly of four building blocks predominantly into a DWT, which undergoes extension to create an adamantane unit and eventually a diamondoid superstructure wherein each porphyrin panel is shared by two neighboring tetrahedra through hetero-π-stacking. π-Diamond exhibits a solid-state fluorescent quantum yield 44 times higher than that of tetraphenylporphyrin along with excellent photocatalytic performance. The precise 3D directionality of π-interactions, achieved through strained multipanel building blocks, revolutionizes the assembly of hierarchical 3D superstructures driven by π-interactions.

Abstract:Noncovalent interactions are essential in determining molecular conformations and assembly architectures, serving as key factors in regulating material properties. Achieving a comprehensive understanding and precise control of these interactions is crucial in molecular design and the development of functional devices. Here, we utilize scanning tunneling microscopic break junction measurements and first-principles calculations to identify pi-pi and pi-lone pair (pi-lp) interactions within diphenyl disulfide derivatives at the single-molecule level. The competition between pi-pi and pi-lp interactions regulates molecular conformation and conductance, leading to switching between high- and low-conductance states. Specifically, pi-pi interactions promote the high-conductance state, while pi-lp interactions drive the molecule into a low-conductance state. Chemical modifications provide efficient methods to adjust pi-pi and pi-lp interactions. These findings not only reveal the underlying mechanism of how pi-pi and pi-lp interactions influence molecular conformation and induce the stereoelectronic effect but also offer a novel approach for creating practical devices.

Abstract:Significance A robust noncovalent π∙∙∙π interaction-stacked organic framework (OF), called πOF, consisting of a permanent three-dimensional porous structure that is held together by pure intralayer noncovalent π∙∙∙π interactions is synthesized and characterized. πOF shows excellent thermostability and high recyclability and exhibits self-healing properties by which the parent porosity is recovered upon solvent annealing at room temperature. We demonstrate remarkable transport properties of πOF in an organic-field-effect transistor, with mobility that is superior to traditional covalent OFs. πOF is a porous and conductive material for high-performance organic electronics.
Nature of the interactions determining the stacking motif of covalent organic frameworks

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have attracted significant attention due to their chemical versatility combined with a significant number of potential applications. Of particular interest are two-dimensional COFs, where the organic building units are linked by covalent bonds within a plane. Most properties of these COFs are determined by the relative arrangement of neighboring layers. These are typically found to be laterally displaced, which, for example, reduces the electronic coupling between the layers. In the present contribution, we use dispersion-corrected density-functional theory to elucidate the origin of that displacement, showing that the common notion that the displacement is a consequence of electrostatic repulsions of polar building blocks can be misleading. For the representative case of COF-1, we find that electrostatic and van der Waals interactions would, actually, favor a cofacial arrangement of the layers and that Pauli repulsion is the crucial factor causing the serrated AA stacking. A more in-depth analysis of the electrostatic contribution reveals that the "classical" Coulomb repulsion between the boroxine building blocks of COF-1 suggested by chemical intuition does exist, but is overcompensated by attractive effects due to charge-penetration in the phenylene units. The situation becomes more involved when additionally allowing the interlayer distance to relax for each displacement, as then the different distance-dependences of the various types of interactions come into play. The overall behavior calculated for COF-1 is recovered for several additional COFs with differently sized pi-systems and topologies, implying that the presented results are of more general relevance.
