Abstract:We successfully synthesized squaramide-based ion pair receptor 3 , possessing a cation binding domain linked to the receptor scaffold so as act as an electron-withdrawing group and enhance anion binding. This compound was able to efficiently and cooperatively bind anions in the presence of sodium cations. Using reference compounds 1 and 2 , we demonstrated that the presence of a carbonyl group on the aromatic ring significantly enhances the efficiency of anion binding. The incorporation of this group in the structure of receptor 3 , combined with other strongly electron-withdrawing groups located on another aryl subunit, enabled the receptor to bind salts even in the presence of water. Furthermore, the capacity for modular synthesis of diarylsquaramides allowed to obtain sensor 4 , which features a pyrene moiety directly attached to the anion-binding domain, selectively sensing dihydrogen phosphate anions. Besides the signaling feature, the presence of pyrene rings facilitated the docking of sensor 4 onto the surface of graphene quantum dots, resulting in a conjugate with improved fluorescent properties.

Abstract:A new ferrocene-dansyl dyad (Fc-DAS), in which the ferrocene unit and the dansyl fluorophore are linked by the imidazolium and the sulfonamide groups, has been designed. The recognition ability of probe toward various anions (H2PO4−, F−, Cl−, Br−, I− and AcO−) has been investigated by fluorescent spectrum and electrochemical techniques (differential pulse voltammetry and cyclic voltammetry). This probe shows fluorescent sensing of F− over other anions with a quenching effect in CH3CN solution. However, the electrochemical experiments reveal that the binding of H2PO4−, F− and AcO− anions leads the potential of probe a cathodic shift, with the shift magnitude H2PO4− > F− > AcO−. Furthermore, the binding mechanisms between Fc-DAS and anions have been investigated using 1H NMR titrations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Abstract:Cyclic and acyclic ferrocene derivatives bearing two imidazolium rings have been synthesized and characterized by NMR, elemental analysis, mass spectra, and X-ray crystallography. Electrochemical measurements revealed that all the receptors displayed a significant anodic shift response for F−. In addition, for receptors 1, 2, and 4, addition of HSO4− induced quite different electrochemical behavior with dramatic cathodic peak current increase on CV. 1H NMR titrations demonstrated that receptors 1, 2, and 4 showed selectivity for AcO− while receptor 3 exhibited high affinity toward Cl− among the anions investigated.

Abstract:Although many redox probes have been used for anion transfer studies in three-phase junction setups, no known molecule would enable the transfer of highly hydrophilic anions. In recent years, research has been emerging on ion pair receptors consisting of a crown ether cation binding site and a squaramide anion binding domain, which offer the ability to extract extremely hydrophilic sulphate salts. In this paper, we show that we can induce the transfer of sulphate and fluoride anions at a three-phase electrode setup using the oxidation of a squaramide-based compound in the organic phase. We evaluate the compound for the transfer of sulphate and fluoride ions and its selectivity towards other anions. We performed measurements of the transfer of ions in regular electrochemical cells, with a small organic drop deposited onto the surface of a glassy carbon electrode. Abstract:A novel fluorescent sensor (AQTF1) based on the N-(quinolin-8-yl) tetrahydrofuran-2-carboxamide was designed and synthesized. This new sensor demonstrated high selectivity for the Zn2+ without the interference from Cd2+. The detection limit of this probe was calculated to be 10.8nM for Zn2+. The in situ prepared AQTF1-Zn2+ complex was used for detection of H2PO4− and displayed good selectivity from the common anions. Furthermore, the AQTF1 displayed good ratiometric response for the relay recognition for Zn2+ and H2PO4−.

Abstract:The squaramide motif with the rigid four-member ring structure that shows the aromaticity is a kind of important and ideal hydrogen bond donor/receptor unit, which can bond to many guest molecules as a double-hydrogen-bond receptor and donor. The squaramide derivatives are easy to be functionalized, which provides the convenient way for the design of the novel ion receptors. In this review, we summarize the structures of squaramide derivatives, synthetic methods, and their recent research progress in the anion, cation, and zwitterionic guest recognition, as well as in the organocatalysis. Finally, the prospects of squaramide derivatives in the future are described.

Abstract:In the field of electrochemical detection, ferrocene has a promising application prospect in view of its impact as a component of molecular receptors and sensing materials. In this review, we aim to describe the principle of ferrocene-based electrochemical detection and further discuss its design and performances. In particular, two forms of detection, molecular recognition and sensing systems, were specified. Ferrocene-based molecular receptors with all kinds of structures covering derivatives, polymers, and supramolecular receptors are presented. Benefits of their structures to the recognition behavior are compared and discussed. In electrochemical sensors, the ferrocene-containing component is used as a mediator or a label. Abstract:Squaramide-based tripodal anion receptors 1-3 have been prepared and their anion binding properties with various inorganic anions were investigated. Receptor 1 formed a dimeric complex in solid state and a 1:1 complex in solution with SO42-. All receptors 1-3 could selectively encapsulate SO42- via hydrogen bonds over other examined anions.

Abstract:A disulfide functionalized bis-ferrocene urea acyclic receptor and disulfide functionalized mono- and bis-ferrocene amide and urea appended upper rim calix[4]arene receptors were prepared for the fabrication of SAM redox-active anion sensors. 1H NMR and diffusive voltammetric anion recognition investigations revealed each receptor to be capable of complexing and electrochemically sensing anions via cathodic perturbations of the respective receptor's ferrocene/ferrocenium redox couple. SAMs of a ferrocene urea receptor 3 and ferrocene urea calixarene receptor 17 exhibited significant enhanced magnitudes of cathodic response upon anion addition as compared to observed diffusive perturbations. SAMs of 17 were demonstrated to sense the perrhenate anion in aqueous solutions.

Abstract:A series of structurally novel anion receptors , , and in which a ferrocene unit and a fluorescent moiety are linked to two imidazolium rings have been designed and prepared from 1,1'-bis(imidazolylmethyl)ferrocene. Their crystal structures revealed that these receptors are capable of incorporating anions such as PF(6)(-) and Br(-). Consequently, the anion binding studies were carried out using various techniques including electrochemistry (CV and OSWV), fluorescence, UV-vis, and (1)H NMR spectroscopy. All the receptors showed a special electrochemical response to the F(-) anion with a remarkable cathodic shift of more than 260 mV and displayed a unique selectivity for F(-) and AcO(-) anions with fluorescence enhancement over various other anions of present interest (Cl(-), Br(-), I(-), HSO(4)(-), H(2)PO(4)(-)). In addition, for receptor , obvious absorption changes were observed when the H(2)PO(4)(-) anion was added while other anions (F(-), Cl(-), Br(-), I(-), AcO(-), HSO(4)(-)) showed only a minor influence on the UV-vis spectra. (1)H NMR titrations demonstrated that receptors and can bind anions through (C-H)(+)X(-) hydrogen bonds and showed strong affinity and high selectivity for the AcO(-) anion in acetonitrile.
Squaramide-based tripodal ionophores for potentiometric sulfate-selective sensors with high selectivity.

Abstract:A class of squaramide-based tripodal molecules was employed as new ionophores for highly sensitive and selective sulfate-selective sensors. Compared with the reported tripodal ionophore with urea, squaramide groups as superior hydrogen bonding donor were introduced into the tripodal structure to obtain new ionophores leading to better electrode performance. Three derivatives with unsubstituted (I), p-carbon trifluoride (II), and p-nitro (III) phenyl groups were attached to squaramide groups for the optimization of ionophore based sensors. Electron withdrawing p-nitrophenyl groups gave a greater enhancement of the hydrogen bond donor ability of squaramide so that Ionophore III was chosen as the best candidate for sulfate ion recognition. Such a membrane with 30 mol% TDMACl exhibited a Nernstian slope of -30.2 mV per decade to sulfate ions with a linear range from 1 mu M to 100 mM in potentiometric measurement. The selectivity coefficients of the proposed sensor over H2PO4-, Cl-, Br-, NO3-, SCN-, I- and ClO4- were -4.3, -3.4, -2.5, -0.6, +3.1, +3.4 and +5.9, respectively, which were much better than the existing sulfate-selective sensors. The new sensors with high selectivity were successfully applied for the quantification of sulfate in cell lysates and drinking water with good recoveries.

Abstract:The novel ferrocene-based compound 2-Fc is synthesized through the reaction of ferrocene carbonate acid and epoxy rosin E-51, and characterized by H-1 NMR. The CV behaviors of 2-Fc in different organic solvents are recorded, and the major influential factors, namely, potential scan rate, concentration of electrolyte, and concentration of 2-Fc, and the mechanism of the electrode process are investigated. The CV behaviors of 2-Fc film on electrode in LiClO4 aqueous and organic solutions and the application of 2-Fc in H2PO4- recognition are also studied.

Abstract:Novel N,N'-bisethoxyethane[12]amideferrocenophane has been synthesized by a condensation reaction and characterized by (1)H NMR and mass spectrum. The anion recognition properties of the compound are evaluated via (1)H NMR, FT-IR, and electrochemical measurement. It is found that N,N'-bisethoxyethane[12]amideferrocenophane exhibits remarkable electrochemical response to H(2)PO(4-) anion in CH(2)C(l2) or CH(3)CN solution, and response to anions can also be observed in CH(3)CN solution containing up to 15% water. Binding constants between the compound and HSO(4-) in different solutions have been determined by UV-vis spectrum titration experiments. The results indicate that the compound shows a selective recognition trend of H(2)PO(4-) > HSO(4-) (F(-)) > Br(-).

Abstract:An intramolecular C–H arylation of ferrocenyl ortho-bromophenyl sulfide and sulfoxide has been developed with a palladium/non-chiral monophosphine ligand. Under mild reaction conditions, a wide range of ferrocene cyclosulfide and ferrocene cyclosulfoxide were obtained in up to 90 % yield. Moreover, planar chiral ferrocene cyclosulfide with enantioselectivities (up to 45 % ee) was synthesized utilizing chiral phosphine ligands. Furthermore, the compound 4a and 6a can be used as novel chemosensors to detect Cu2+ ion.

Abstract:Abstract Woodward and co-workers in 1952 characterised the unique structural features of ferrocene (the first sandwich compound), demonstrated its aromatic nature and observed that on treatment with mild oxidising agents (aqueous Ag 2 SO 4 , p -benzoquinone in organic solvents) the orange solution of ferrocene (Fc) turned blue due to the formation of ferrocenium (Fc + ). A few months later, the one-electron Fc/Fc + redox change was characterised polarographically by Page and Wilkinson with E 1/2 = 0.31 V vs SCE (0.56 V vs NHE) in ethanol/water 9:1. Since then ferrocene has become an icon of organometallic electrochemistry. Owing to the stability of its molecular framework, to the ease of functionalisation at the cyclopentadienyl rings and to the fast, reversible and kinetically uncomplicated Fc/Fc + redox change, ferrocene has been used as a building block for the design of switchable functional systems. In this review, we will consider (1) electrochemical sensors for metal ions, anions and metal–anion pairs operating through the Fc/Fc + redox change, (2) ferrocene-based redox switches of fluorescence and (3) cross-transport of electrons and anions through a liquid membrane mediated by lipophilic ferrocene derivatives. Abstract:Anions play many roles in our environment. Consequently, the development of synthetic receptors capable of targeted anion binding is of ongoing importance. While many such receptors are known, simplified designs and measurement approaches are always beneficial. Herein, we report the synthesis of a non-symmetric aryl-triazole pentad receptor appended with a single ferrocene, its electrochemistry, and the selective binding to dihydrogen phosphate (H 2 PO 4 – ) anions of its oxidised form over various environmentally prevalent anions (HSO 4 – , Cl – , NO 3 – ). The receptor was constructed using a modular architecture with simple installation of a ferrocene unit using click chemistry. Electrochemical analysis on the receptor revealed that addition of H 2 PO 4 – anion led to a shift in the redox peaks of the receptor ( FcP ) towards more negative potentials, indicating higher anion affinity was achieved after the ferrocene was oxidised to its cationic form ( FcP + ). This work verifies prior studies on the efficacy of cationic charge in simpler receptor design for the creation of functional host-guest systems.

Abstract:A series of novel N-tert-butyl sulfinyl squaramide receptors have been designed and synthesized. Their interactions with a range of inorganic anions were studied in solution by 1H NMR spectroscopy. This new type of squaramide displayed better anion-binding abilities over conventional diphenyl squaramides. The single crystal analysis and DFT calulations implied the role of the tert-butyl C–H protons in binding Cl–. The energies of C–H···Cl– interactions were estimated to be 1.4–1.6 kcal/mol in solution.

Abstract:A series of ferrocene- and azobenzene-based compounds with acyl amine groups attached were designed and synthesized to explore their potential application in anion recognition. Their electro- and photo-properties, and the effect of nitro and amine substituents of the benzene ring on anion recognition were studied by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy (UV) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The results showed that a nitro group substituent has a positive effect on the binding affinity and sensitivity, which might be due to the strong hydrogen bonding interaction between the receptor and the guest, while an amino group substituent has a negative effect on the sensitivity. Furthermore, the shift in the UV-vis absorption spectra was observed as a color change, which can be used for the naked-eye detection of F − and H 2 PO 4 − .
