Abstract:Predicting urban traffic flow is significant to intelligent transportation systems. Urban traffic flow data is a type of time-series data, which collects the traffic flow of a road section or area. So in this paper, we treat urban traffic flow prediction as a time series problem. The traditional method to tackle traffic flow prediction is difficult, because of the complex influence factors and nonlinear dependencies. Recently, LSTM based network has been widely used to model long-term series, but the memory of LSTM is typically too small and is not enough to accurately remember facts from the past. In this paper, we using memory time-series network with additional memory mechanisms to address urban traffic prediction problems. Historical data were divided into long-term and short-term two parts, long-term historical data models the overall trend and short-term historical data takes into account recent changes. The experiment results on two urban traffic flow datasets demonstrate the model is effective and outperforms baselines.

Abstract:With the help of traffic detectors widely deployed along arterial roads and intersections, real-time traffic data are collected and updated in a very short time period, which makes it possible to conduct real-time analysis at signalized intersections. Among them, real-time crash risk prediction is one of the most promising and challenging research topics. This study attempts to predict real-time crash risk by considering time series dependency with the employment of a long short-term memory recurrent neural network (LSTM-RNN) algorithm. Also, the synthetic minority over-sampling technique (SMOTE) was utilized in this study to generate a balanced training dataset for algorithm training. In comparison, a conditional logistic model was developed based on matched case control design. Both models were evaluated based on the real-world unbalanced test dataset rather than an artificially balanced dataset. The comparison results indicate that the LSTM-RNN with SMOTE outperforms the conditional logistic model. The methods and findings of this study attempt to verify the feasibility of real-time crash risk prediction by using LSTM-RNN with over-sampled dataset (SMOTE).

Abstract:Traffic flow forecasting is hot spot research of intelligent traffic system construction. The existing traffic flow prediction methods have problems such as poor stability, high data requirements, or poor adaptability. In this paper, we define the traffic data time singularity ratio in the dropout module and propose a combination prediction method based on the improved long short-term memory neural network and time series autoregressive integrated moving average model (SDLSTM-ARIMA), which is derived from the Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN) model. It compares the traffic data time singularity with the probability value in the dropout module and combines them at unequal time intervals to achieve an accurate prediction of traffic flow data. Then, we design an adaptive traffic flow embedded system that can adapt to Java, Python and other languages and other interfaces. The experimental results demonstrate that the method based on the SDLSTM - ARIMA model has higher accuracy than the similar method using only autoregressive integrated moving average or autoregressive. Our embedded traffic prediction system integrating computer vision, machine learning and cloud has the advantages such as high accuracy, high reliability and low cost. Therefore, it has a wide application prospect.

Abstract:Network traffic has time-varying and nonlinear characteristics, leading to relatively low accuracy of single linear and nonlinear prediction models. Therefore, a combination model prediction method of autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model and improved particle swarm optimization (IPSO) bi-directional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) is proposed. First, the ARIMA model is used for nonsmooth modeling to obtain linear variation characteristics. Then the ARIMA prediction values are subtracted from the actual data to obtain the residual series. The optimal parameters of the BiLSTM are also optimized by IPSO. Then the optimized BiLSTM is modeled on the residual series to obtain the residual variation characteristics. Finally, the ARIMA linear predictions and the IPSO optimized BiLSTM residual predictions are summed to obtain the final prediction results. The proposed combination model outperforms the comparison model, has smaller prediction errors, and can better characterize the complex features of network traffic.

Abstract:In the fields of traffic management, traffic health, and vehicle safety, vehicle speed prediction is an important research topic. The greater the difference between vehicle speed and average vehicle speed, or the more discrete the vehicle speed distribution, the higher the accident rate. This paper proposes a vehicle speed prediction method based on adaptive KF (Kalman filtering) in the ARMA (Autoregressive Moving Average) environment to address the problem of high-speed moving vehicle speed prediction. The ARMA theory is used to model the prediction of speed time series. The contribution rate of each coefficient representing the original time series is different after fitting the original time series with the ARMA model, so each coefficient must be given a certain weight. Multisource traffic data fusion and interval speed prediction are carried out on the basis of few-shot data preprocessing and traffic state division, according to different traffic states. The speed prediction accuracy is very high, according to the algorithm verification results.

Abstract:The prediction of the traffic flow can give the people important traveling information. In this paper, the traffic flow prediction problem is studied. An ARIMA model is proposed for the traffic flow prediction. The ARIMA model is trained according to the different period traffic data. Based on the different period data training, the ARIMA model is refined more accuracy. The experiments show that the ARIMA model trained by the time-oriented data can reach a better result than the non time-oriented data trained model.
A model of maritime accidents prediction based on multi-factor time series analysis

Abstract:Effective maritime accident prediction will benefit both maritime safety management and the insurance industry. Due to the complex non-linearity and non-stationarity nature of maritime accident data, its prediction is still a challenge in the research field. An autoregressive integrated moving average with explanatory variables (ARIMAX) model was proposed to predict maritime accidents accurately, and a multi-factor accident prediction framework was developed. Additionally, the impacts of eight influencing factors on the number of maritime accidents were also investigated, and the predictions from the ARIMAX model were contrasted with those from earlier maritime accident prediction models, as well as autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA), back-propagation neural network (BPNN), and support vector regression (SVR). The findings imply that an increase in any one of the eight factors may increase the number of maritime accidents worldwide. The ARIMAX model, which incorporates accident factors, is accurate enough to estimate the number of global maritime accidents and outperforms the ARIMA, BPNN, and SVR models in terms of prediction precision and robustness. The ARIMAX model outperforms earlier marine accident prediction models and has good applicability.

Abstract:With the rapid development of urbanization, the boom of vehicle numbers has resulted in serious traffic accidents, which led to casualties and huge economic losses. The ability to predict the risk of traffic accident is important in the prevention of the occurrence of accidents and to reduce the damages caused by accidents in a proactive way. However, traffic accident risk prediction with high spatiotemporal resolution is difficult, mainly due to the complex traffic environment, human behavior, and lack of real-time traffic-related data. In this study, we collected heterogeneous traffic-related data, including traffic accident, traffic flow, weather condition and air pollution from the same city; proposed a deep learning model based on recurrent neural network toward a prediction of traffic accident risk. The predictive accident risk can be potential applied to the traffic accident warning system. We ranked the predictive power of various factors considered in our model through the method of Granger causality analysis, and established the order of predictive power as traffic flow > traffic accident > geographical position >> weather + air quality + holiday + time period, which indicate that traffic flow is the most essential factor for the occurrence of traffic accidents. The proposed method can be integrated into an intelligent traffic control system toward a more reasonable traffic prediction and command organization.

Abstract:With the construction and development of smart cities, accurate and real-time traffic prediction plays a vital role in urban traffic. However, traffic data has the characteristics of non-linearity, non-stationary and complex structure, so traffic prediction has always been a challenging problem. The traditional statistical model is good at dealing with linear data and poor at dealing with nonlinear data. Although the ability to capture nonlinear data has improved, the deep learning approach has difficulty in meeting the real-time requirements of traffic prediction. To solve the above challenges, we propose a novel approach based on the Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average model (ARIMA) model and combining empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and singular value decomposition (SVD) technology, i.e., ESARIMA. This method first uses EMD to stabilize the traffic data, then uses SVD to compress data and reduce the noise, so as to improve the efficiency and accuracy of ARIMA model in predicting traffic flow. Finally, we use real datasets to verify the feasibility of ESARIMA. The experimental results show that our method outperforms state-of-art baselines.

Abstract:Short-time traffic flow prediction is a significant interest in transportation study, and it is essential in congestion control and traffic network management. In this paper, we propose an Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average with Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedasticity (ARIMA-GARCH) model for traffic flow prediction. The model combines linear ARIMA model with nonlinear GARCH model, so it can capture both the conditional mean and conditional heteroscedasticity of traffic flow series. The model is calibrated, validated and used for prediction based on PeMS single loop detector data. The performance of the hybrid model is compared with that of standard ARIMA model. The results show that the introduction of conditional heteroscedasticity cannot bring satisfactory improvement to prediction accuracy, in some cases the general GARCH(1,1) model may even deteriorate the performance. Thus for ordinary traffic flow prediction, the standard ARIMA model is sufficient.

Abstract:Purpose Efficient traffic incident management is needed to alleviate the negative impact of traffic incidents. Accurate and reliable estimation of traffic incident duration is of great importance for traffic incident management. Previous studies have proposed models for traffic incident duration prediction; however, most of these studies focus on the total duration and could not update prediction results in real-time. From a traveler’s perspective, the relevant factor is the residual duration of the impact of the traffic incident. Besides, few (if any) studies have used dynamic traffic flow parameters in the prediction models. This paper aims to propose a framework to fill these gaps. Design/methodology/approach This paper proposes a framework based on the multi-layer perception (MLP) and long short-term memory (LSTM) model. The proposed methodology integrates traffic incident-related factors and real-time traffic flow parameters to predict the residual traffic incident duration. To validate the effectiveness of the framework, traffic incident data and traffic flow data from Shanghai Zhonghuan Expressway are used for modeling training and testing. Findings Results show that the model with 30-min time window and taking both traffic volume and speed as inputs performed best. The area under the curve values exceed 0.85 and the prediction accuracies exceed 0.75. These indicators demonstrated that the model is appropriate for this study context. The model provides new insights into traffic incident duration prediction. Research limitations/implications The incident samples applied by this study might not be enough and the variables are not abundant. The number of injuries and casualties, more detailed description of the incident location and other variables are expected to be used to characterize the traffic incident comprehensively. The framework needs to be further validated through a sufficiently large number of variables and locations. Practical implications The framework can help reduce the impacts of incidents on the safety of efficiency of road traffic once implemented in intelligent transport system and traffic management systems in future practical applications. Originality/value This study uses two artificial neural network methods, MLP and LSTM, to establish a framework aiming at providing accurate and time-efficient information on traffic incident duration in the future for transportation operators and travelers. This study will contribute to the deployment of emergency management and urban traffic navigation planning.

Abstract:Understanding the non-linear relationship between traffic injury severity and factors in accuracy can help decrease accident occurrence and improve driving safety. This paper uses a GA-BP neural network to model the relationship and predict injury severity in traffic accidents classified into fatality, serious crash, and slight crash. And it validates the superior performance of GA-BP with crash data from the UK in 2015, compared to the BP neural network and the logistic regression model. A sensitivity analysis is applied to find out the contribution that input variables have on injury severity. This paper indicates that the GA-BP neural network provides a reference for injury severity prediction in traffic accident.

Abstract:All vehicle drivers are prone to traffic accidents no matter their age, years of experience, type of vehicle driven, etc. It is estimated that 1.35 million people are killed yearly in crashes involving vehicles such as cars, buses, motorcycles, bicycles, trucks, etc. or even while being bare pedestrians. Such accidents often have a critical economic and social impact on the lives of the deceased's family. Whilst some may die at the instant moment of the accident and some may survive the impact to further meet death later, the severity of the accident itself plays a huge role in the prior. Hence, prediction of accident severity using various features such as time of day, weather conditions, ages of drivers, etc. may aid in the readiness of the dedicated emergency response and may further then increase the chances of surviving the after-impact. This paper discusses the prediction of traffic accident severity using Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) whilst having a total of 10 input features such as the number of vehicles involved in the accident, day of the week, time of day, road surface condition, street lighting condition, weather condition, type of vehicles involved in the accident, type of causal vehicle, gender of causal driver and their age. The prediction model was implemented using the deep learning toolbox on MATLAB. The model was able to achieve an accuracy of 80% approximately.

The proposed method can be integrated into an intelligent traffic control system toward a more reasonable traffic prediction and command organization.
Hybrid machine learning algorithm and statistical time series model for network-wide traffic forecast

Abstract:<p>We propose a novel approach for network-wide traffic state prediction where the statistical time series model ARIMA is used to postprocess the residuals out of the fundamental machine learning algorithm MLP. This approach is named as NN-ARIMA. Neural Network MLP is employed to capture network-scale co-movement pattern of all traffic flows, and ARIMA is used to further extract location-specific traffic features in the residual time series out of Neural Network. The experiment results show that the postprocessing the residuals of Neural Network by the ARIMA analysis helps to significantly improve accuracy of traffic state prediction by 8.9–13.4% in term of mean squared error reduction. In order to verify the efficiency of the ARIMA analysis in the postprocessing, Multidimensional Support Vector Regression (MSVR) model is also employed to replace the role of Neural Network in the comparative experiment. Two streams of comparisons, (1) NN vs. NN-ARIMA and (2) MSVR vs. MSVR-ARIMA, are performed and show consistent results. The proposed approach not only can capture network-wide co-movement pattern of traffic flows, but also seize location-specific traffic characteristics as well as sharp nonlinearity of macroscopic traffic variables. The case study indicates that the accuracy of prediction can be significantly improved when both network-scale traffic features and location-specific characteristics are taken into account.</p>

Abstract:Traffic accidents pose a significant risk to human health and property safety. Therefore, to prevent traffic accidents, predicting their risks has garnered growing interest. We argue that a desired prediction solution should demonstrate resilience to the complexity of traffic accidents. In particular, it should adequately consider the regional background, accurately capture both spatial proximity and semantic similarity, and effectively address the sparsity of traffic accidents. However, these factors are often overlooked or difficult to incorporate. In this paper, we propose a novel multi-granularity hierarchical spatio-temporal network. Initially, we innovate by incorporating remote sensing data, facilitating the creation of hierarchical multi-granularity structure and the comprehension of regional background. We construct multiple high-level risk prediction tasks to enhance model's ability to cope with sparsity. Subsequently, to capture both spatial proximity and semantic similarity, region feature and multi-view graph undergo encoding processes to distill effective representations. Additionally, we propose message passing and adaptive temporal attention module that bridges different granularities and dynamically captures time correlations inherent in traffic accident patterns. At last, a multivariate hierarchical loss function is devised considering the complexity of the prediction purpose. Extensive experiments on two real datasets verify the superiority of our model against the state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract:This research concerns itself with a wavelet-SVM combined model study of the short-term traffic flow prediction issue. Different theories and methods have been introduced in the field to solve short-term traffic flow forecasting problem. And in our study, we attempt to use an alternative prediction framework to examine the combined model. This paper consists of four sections. A brief introduction is given in Section one of this study. Section two includes the theories of wavelet and support vector machine (SVM), then put forward the combined model. Section three focuses on a numerical study based on the actual speed data of an expressway in Beijing The whole paper ends with the conclusion that the combined model has very high accuracy.

Abstract:The ability to predict traffic variables such as speed, travel time and flow, based on real time and historic data, collected by various systems in transportation networks, is vital to the intelligent transportation systems (ITS). The present paper proposes a method based on Principal Component Analysis and Support Vector Regression (PCA-SVR) for a short-term simultaneously prediction of network traffic flow which is multidimensional compared with traditional single point. Data from a typical traffic network of Beijing City, China are used for the analysis. Other models such as ANN and ARIMA are also developed as a comparison of the performance of both these techniques is carried out to show the effectiveness of the novel method.

Abstract:With the progress of urban transportation infrastructure and the construction of intelligent transportation system, sufficiently accurate traffic flow prediction is of increasing importance for urban planning and management. This paper based on traffic flow data in a section of highway in Los Angeles, USA, we combine external qualitative data such as weather and work calendars, analyze and process the factors significantly influencing traffic flow first, then train and test the traffic flow data by building machine learning Support Vector Regression (SVR) model and the Back Propagation neural network (BP neural network). The test results show that the BP neural network traffic flow prediction model incorporating the external environment is more accurate, and that the external environment has a significant impact on the traffic flow prediction problem. If more significantly influencing factors can be taken into account, or if the current algorithm can be optimized, the prediction accuracy will have further improved, thus effectively enhancing the efficiency and safety of traffic systems.

Abstract:This paper compared the expected accuracy of the gray GM (1, 1) model and the combined GMBP model using a data set for major road traffic accidents. A combined GMBP prediction model composed of the very first parameter gray model GM (1, 1) is able to make exact predictions for forecasting dreary type of processes, and BP (back-propagation) neural network for a major traffic accident is proposed to overcome the limitations of a single prediction model for a major traffic accident. The method first obtains predicted data using the gray GM (1, 1) model, then trains the BP neural network using the GM (1, 1) model’s predicted data and the original data as input and output data, respectively, and finally the trained BP neural network can be considered a combined GMBP prediction model. The predicted data of the digit of major traffic accidents, the digit of fatalities, and the digit of damages from 2008 to 2020 were obtained using the combined GMBP prediction model, and it is compared with the expected data of the single gray GM (1, 1) model. The grades showed that the exactitude of the combined GMBP prediction model was significantly higher than that of the single gray GM (1, 1) model. Finally, from 2021 to 2033, the combined GMBP prediction model is used to forecast the number of significant road traffic incidents, mortalities, and damages. The prediction results show that the number of accidents, faculties, and injuries is on the decline in the future years.
