Abstract:This paper satisfies the requirements for reliable and inexpensive congestion detection in urban road networks. The objective of this research is to use fuzzy logic to detect the traffic conditions states based on sets of rules that compare the filed traffic states. An alternative approach that enables knowledge based on effective and efficient methods of detecting traffic congestion. The main strategies in this work include the detection of congestion based on index measures of traffic speed, index speed reduction, and speed ratio. Spatial analysis of traffic data utilizing ArcGIS application to produce digitized street maps of congestion assessments through GIS traffic data. Utilizing the Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) approach for adopted traffic parameters provides an analytical solution for ambiguous and uncertain problems. The categories of traffic input parameters distinguish states of congestion levels through the determination of values of congestion index levels. The analysis of the speed reduction index illustrated the hot spots within the study network which represent Bab Al-Moathum zone; Al-Mawal (Mustansiriyah University zone); Al-Kindi government hospital induced heavy congestion with an index range of (0.651–0.717). A precise threshold to describe the level of congestion using the Fuzzy Inference System to evaluate urban streets into different categories; Free-flow, Normal, Moderate, Heavy congested, and Blocked. A contribution of two input traffic parameters is considered to quantify congestion in one output that combines different congestion field measures. Over 15 links (Bab Al-Moathum zone, Palestine Street near Mustansiriyah University, Al-Kindi govern ate hospital with black color induced worse traffic conditions, resulting in a blocked effect. The rest of the segments within the case study range from heavily congested to normal. A more realistic and detailed view of traffic congestion for selected street networks is obtained based on a fuzzy inference system as to traditional methods that consider one parameter for traffic performance.

Abstract:To address road accident losses, there is a need to prioritize safety factors, especially in high-risk locations on the road network, toward assuring a sustainable transport system. This paper proposes an approach for quantitative risk assessments of safety factors in hazardous road locations and involves the integration of the Fuzzy logic model, the Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP) and the Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS). This new innovative method offers a way to prioritize and select safety factors associated with hazardous locations using a hierarchical structure. To demonstrate the applicability of this method, a case study was conducted in Egypt. The assessment process involved active participation by professionals through multiple expert meetings. This collaborative approach ensures that the assessment incorporates valuable real-world knowledge and experiences. It analyzed road safety hazardous conditions across various sections, including intersections, non-intersection sections, narrow bridge sections, and curve sections. The application of FAHP-TOPSIS enables the determination of weights for safety factors within each section, facilitating the evaluation of safety indices between them and ranking the safety hazard sections. The achieved analysis revealed that the hazard safety factor index is comparatively higher in curved sections compared to other types of sections. Light utility poles and road barriers significantly affected the hazard index. By utilizing this approach, governments may make informed decisions regarding the allocation of resources and the implementation of safety measures at hazardous road locations.

Abstract:Transport network planning in Egypt suffers from insufficient planning that should be done prior to execution. This research presses on the fact that personal experience and cognition alone cannot be the main factors of design that it should go hand in hand with scientific measurable analysis and evidence. Hence, it focuses on having a deeper understanding of the influence of spatial network configuration on urban activity and centrality. It proposes that Space Syntax, as a syntactic model, has potential to be utilized in optimizing transportation networks, based on Space Syntax ability to model and predict streets with most urban activity and areas that act as central gathering points, and therefore, giving a scientific basis to evident decisions to choose optimum routes and stations for transit networks. The study hypothesizes that adding Space Syntax spatial configuration analysis as a layer to the whole process can give a better understanding of the network. This research applies Space Syntax configurational analysis with the aim to present an evidence approach to optimize its transportation network. The proposed approach is applied on Mansoura City, an intermediate city in Dakahlia governorate in Egypt. The methodology includes field observations using gate counting technique to identify movement flows in different parts of the city, running a segment map analysis of the city’s street network and validating the results of the analysis through comparing computed values with observations. Results identify streets with major urban movement which represent potential transit routes and areas that are considered urban centers which represent potential transit stations. These results verify the important role of accessibility analysis in transportation planning, and therefore presents an applicable approach to identify optimum transit routes and stations that have higher potential to act as active movement corridors at a city scale.

Abstract:Abstract Accessibility has an important impact on shaping human activity patterns on all of the spatial scales. This study presented an evaluation of accessibility levels with private to commercial centers for three selected routes in Baghdad city. The study involved more than 45 days transport survey for private vehicles in Baghdad city using Global Positioning System (GPS) probe for recording indicators of traffic performance. Gravity model was used to measure accessibility index as an implementation of GIS-based model by using link geography and the spatial boundary of analysis in order to build route networks at three routes in Baghdad City, Bayaa intersection - Bab Al-Muatham intersection (Route 1), Bayaa intersection - Bab Al-Muatham intersection (Route 2) and 14 Ramadan Street - Bab Al-Muatham intersection (Route 3). It was found that Route 1 has the high accessibility index with 0.67 in compare with Route 2 and 3 (0.58 and 0.59), respectively. The reason that Route 1 had the highest accessibility index due to the high access point and low traffic volume as compared with the other two routes.
Identification of Critical Links in Urban Road Network Based on GIS

Abstract:A GIS-based method is proposed to identify critical links in urban road networks. This study utilizes a geographic information system (GIS) to evaluate the distribution of road infrastructure, road density, and network accessibility at the micro, meso, and macro levels. At the micro level, GIS is used to assess the distribution of public facilities along the roads. At the meso level, a city's road density distribution is evaluated. At the macro level, a spatial barrier model and a transportation network model are constructed to assess the network accessibility. An inverse distance weighting method is employed to interpolate the accessibility. Furthermore, a network topology is established, and the entropy method is utilized to evaluate the sections comprehensively. The sections are ranked based on the evaluation results to identify the critical links in the urban road network. The road-network data and points of interest (POI) data from the Anning District in Lanzhou are selected for a case study, and the results indicate that the top five critical links have scores of 0.641, 0.571, 0.570, 0.519, and 0.508, respectively. Considering the three indicators enhances the accuracy of critical section identification, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed method. Visualizing each indicator using GIS 10.7 provides a new approach to identifying critical links in urban road networks and offers essential theoretical support for urban planning.

Abstract:The structural performance of any transport network may be mainly evaluated using connectivity, accessibility, hierarchy and morphology. The evaluation of accessibility is one of the most important aspect in defining the performance of a road network structure. The present study is concerned with proposing a methodology for the city—level opportunity (or) urban services and distance based accessibility evaluation. The various opportunities (or) urban services like schools, colleges, ATM’s, banks, hospitals, police stations, petrol bunks, bus stops, parks and theatres up to a specified distance of 0–5 km radius were considered for the analysis. The weights were assigned to different opportunities and were analyzed using Weighted Scoring Model. The Mean Weighted Accessibility Index has been determined for each location to identify the level of accessibility in a particular location. The study attempts to define the level of road network accessibility at different locations in the study area. In the later stage, this study tried to establish the relationship between the number of opportunities and trip attraction rates and the results were discussed. The present work was also intended to prove the efficiency of Geographical Information Systems in opportunity based accessibility assessment.

Abstract:Egypt governmental reports shows non-optimal geographical distribution of educational facilities and the difficulty in reaching school locations leads to high rates of early school drop-out. Reports showed that 2.75% of school dropout in Mansura city-Egypt (the case study) was due to spatial factors related to the difficulty of reaching school. Urban Planning Authority's report endorse that, the primary school location and the residential building must range between 500–750 m. However, such recommendations failed to take into attention or abided by a developing country like Egypt. The study goes through two Scenarios: (i) Scenario No. 1. Evaluating current school locations and (ii) Scenario No. 2. Analyzing proposed school locations and assess accessibility effectiveness after the process of schools' geographical redistribution, it was carried out using GIS environment. The study objectives are about examined the role of spatial modeling and location analysis for improving the accessibility to public primary schools in Egypt: The specific aim of the study (i) Showing geographic distribution of public primary Schools in Mansura city. (ii) Examining the accessibility to Public Primary Schools in Mansura city and (iii) Using GIS tools to propose optimum locations where future public primary schools ought to be located. The study manipulated location-allocation models in GIS being one of the location analyses tools. It supports the process of spatial decision-making through several models and various scenarios. These provides varied options and great flexibility during planning. For analyzing the current situation of primary schools' distribution, GIS spatial analysis tools were used such as: Average Nearest Neighbor, Hotspot analysis and Grouping analysis. Study results concluded that number of demand points exceeds the distance of arrival at the optimal standard was about 54.96%. Schools concentration ratio in the city was 71.74% fell to 19.77% after the process of geographical redistribution of school locations. The proposed map of primary school locations in Mansura city can give a clear view for the decision maker on what location-allocation models can contribute for improving accessibility to educational facilities through applying the reliable standards.

Abstract:Abstract Flash floods are a major threat to life and properties in arid regions. In recent decades, Egypt has experienced severe flash floods that have caused significant damage across the country, including the Red Sea region. The aim of this study is to map the flood hazards in flood-prone areas along the Red Sea region using a Geographic Information System (GIS)-based morphometric analysis approach. To evaluate the flood hazard degree, the adopted methodology considers various morphometric parameters such as basin area, slope, sinuosity index, shape factor, drainage intensity, circularity ratio, and curve number. GIS techniques were employed to delineate the watershed and the drainage network. The delineated watershed was used together with the digitized maps of soil and land use types to estimate the curve number and the morphometric parameters for each subbasin. The flood hazard degrees are calculated based on the considered morphometric parameters and distinguished based on a five-degree scale ranging from very low to very high. Results indicate that 47% of the study area has a very high flood hazard degree. Furthermore, morphometric analysis results align with the runoff results simulated by a hydrological model, where, for example, basins with a high to very high hazard degree exhibited high runoff. This suggests the influence of physical characteristics on the hydrological behavior of the watershed and further validates the morphometric analysis presented in this work. The results presented here can help policy planners and decision-makers develop appropriate measures to mitigate flash floods and achieve sustainable development in arid regions.

Abstract:Because of the privilege of the city of Karbala with its religious character, this city has become a destination for all visitors from all cities of the world; as a consequence, there are now more people living in Karbala, which has increased the number of vehicles on the road and, consequently, the amount of traffic congestion. In this study, the degrees of public transportation service in the city of Karbala as well as the urban road network, were assessed using GIS. The collected data include the number of nodes, links, and the total length of Karbala's urban road network using a GIS program and traffic composition (bus and minibus). Then, a set of coefficients for evaluating the urban road network was calculated) β- Index, α- Index, γ- Index, η- Index and GTP- Index), After determining the percentage of buses and minibusses, it became clear that public transportation in Karbala is very weak and needs development, as the percentage of buses and minibusses did not exceed 30% of the total traffic volume.

Abstract:Road networks exist in the form of polylines with attributes within the GIS databases. Such a representation renders the geographic data impracticable for 3D road traffic simulation. In this work, we propose a method to transform raw GIS data into a realistic, operational model for real-time road traffic simulation. For instance, the proposed raw to simulation ready data transformation is achieved through several curvature estimation, interpolation/approximation, and clustering schemes. The obtained results show the performance of our approach and prove its adequacy to real traffic simulation scenario as can be seen in this video 1 .

Abstract:Futian District is the central urban area of Shenzhen and one of the busiest and most dynamic urban areas. This article is based on the spatial analysis method (slop, density, road area); Simultaneously, using research methods such as average station distance, nonlinear coefficient, service area, and public transportation network repetitive coefficient, combined with national standards, this study analyzes and evaluates the urban road network and public transportation network in Futian District, Shenzhen. The results show that: firstly, the overall difference in road network density in Futian District is significant, with a characteristic of high density in the southeast and low density in the northwest. The transportation network is mainly distributed in the east, south, and west regions. Secondly, the shortcomings of the planning in this area were manifested in the non-compliance of the urban road area with national standards, the high nonlinear coefficient of bus routes, increased time and travel costs for residents' bus travel, and a bus service area within 500 m far below national standards. Reflecting on the sustainable development of urbanization in the area, we should address the shortcomings in road design and public transportation layout, explore our own advantages, and adjust planning strategies to seek new directions and strategies.

Abstract:Owing to the expeditious growth in the information and communication technologies, smart cities have raised the expectations in terms of efficient functioning and management. One key aspect of residents' daily comfort is assured through affording reliable traffic management and route planning. Comprehensively, the majority of the present trip planning applications and service providers are enabling their trip planning recommendations relying on shortest paths and/or fastest routes. However, such suggestions may discount drivers' preferences with respect to safe and less disturbing trips. Road anomalies such as cracks, potholes, and manholes induce risky driving scenarios and can lead to vehicles damages and costly repairs. Accordingly, in this paper, we propose a crowdsensing based dynamic route planning system. Leveraging both the vehicle motion sensors and the inertial sensors within the smart devices, road surface types and anomalies have been detected and categorized. In addition, the monitored events are geo-referenced utilizing GPS receivers on both vehicles and smart devices. Consequently, road segments assessments are conducted using fuzzy system models based on aspects such as the number of anomalies and their severity levels in each road segment. Afterward, another fuzzy model is adopted to recommend the best trip routes based on the road segments quality in each potential route. Extensive road experiments are held to build and show the potential of the proposed system.

Exploring a GIS-based analytic hierarchy process for spatial flood risk assessment in Egypt: a case study of the Damietta branch

Abstract:Floods are the most common and costly disasters worldwide, while spatial flood risk assessment is still challenging due to fewer observations and method limitations. In this study, the flood risk zonation in the Nile districts of the Damietta branch, Egypt, is delineated and assessed by integrating remote sensing with a geographic information system, and an analytical hierarchy process (AHP). Twelve thematic layers (elevation, slope, normalized difference vegetation index, topographic wetness index, modified normalized difference water index, topographic positioning index, stream power index, modified Fournier index, drainage density, distance to the river, sediment transport index, and lithology) are used for producing flood susceptibility zonation (FSZ) and six parameters (total population, distance to hospital, land use/land cover, population density, road density, and distance to road) are utilized for producing flood vulnerability zonation. Multicollinearity analysis is applied to identify highly correlated independent variables. Sensitivity studies have been used to assess the effectiveness of the AHP model. The results indicate that the high and very high flood risk classes cover 21.40% and 8.26% of the area, respectively. In 14.07%, 27.01%, and 29.26% of the research area, respectively, flood risk zones classified as very low, low, and moderate are found. Finally, FSZ is validated using the receiver operating characteristics curve and area under curve (AUC) analysis. A higher AUC value (0.741) in the validation findings demonstrated the validity of this AHP approach. The results of this study will help planners, hydrologists, and managers of water resources manage areas that are susceptible to flooding and reduce potential harm.

Abstract:Rapid urbanization in emerging nations such as Ethiopia encourages participants in the area to consider the sustainability and balanced growth of metropolitan centers from a variety of angles and to offer suitable solutions. This study aims to comprehend how urban land use influences the efficiency and connection of road networks, which in turn affects how accessible different parts of the city are, to determine the influencing factors and critical indicators that enable a systematic categorization of subcity accessibility from the perspectives of urban land use. Geographic information system (GIS) techniques are used to gather and analyze precise geographical data on road networks, land use patterns, and other pertinent properties. In addition, a regression model is created to measure the effect of land use features on the accessibility of the road network. The primary questionnaire data are used to estimate the current situation of road accessibility and are used in the study validation process. This research has incorporated qualitative and quantitative approaches to sustainability. The findings imply that residential areas are 90% significant in making transport along the city, and 98% of the accessibility of the road network is dependent on land use features, including road density and subcity areas. Among the subcities, Bole, Kirkos, and Arada have 87% road network accessibility and better access to public transportation. Overall, these techniques emphasize the value of spatial analytic tools in planning procedures to better comprehend and control the intricate relationships between transportation and land use dynamics and to assist in the sustainable design and growth of cities.

Abstract:Sustainable strategies for urban space management induce the effects of quality of life in new cities. The main aspects that define sustainability in public spaces include the notion of efficiency for services and facilities provided in various sectors that affect people's well-being and social behavior. Nevertheless, Egyptian Cities encounter challenges faced by the continuous urban sprawl that induces specific needs such as connectivity and management of public spaces, taking into consideration the importance of human scale and adaptive solutions on the level of Streetscape. The research fills the gap between users' experience in public spaces and the missed opportunities in the extended urbanized context of urban development in the new Cairo residential districts. The methodology adopted consists firstly of an explicit literature review related to existing models assessing public behavior in urban spaces; secondly, a consistent empirical study for opportunities provided in an actual case study represented in the residual public space, and lastly by demonstrating public responsiveness using a structured interview to describe the way they interact in social and the public realm within the context of "the Park View" project. The research represents an explicit review of the actual streetscape impact on human social behavior. The conclusion incorporates highlights on the importance of defining a specific tool to assess public behavior in relation to provided configurations of existing public spaces to enable enhancement of inclusive experience of public spaces as an emergent reality to the notion of Urban Sprawl, within the context of New Cairo agglomerations.

Abstract:Egypt faces extreme traffic congestion in its cities, which results in long travel times, large lines of parked cars, and increased safety hazards. Our study suggests a multi-modal approach that combines critical infrastructure improvements with cutting-edge technologies to address the ubiquitous problem of traffic congestion. Assuring vehicles owners of their timely arrival, cutting down on fuel usage, and improving communication using deep learning approach and optimization algorithm within the potential of IoT enabled 5G framework are the main goals. The traffic management system incorporates detection cameras, Raspberry Pi 3 microcontroller, an Android application, cloud connectivity, and traditional traffic lights that are powered using PV modules and batteries to secure the traffic controllers operation in case of grid outage and assure service continuity. The model examines the difficulties associated with Internet of Things (IoT) communication, highlighting possible interference from device-to-device (D2D) devices and cellular user equipment. This all-encompassing strategy aims to reduce fuel consumption, increase road safety and improve traffic efficiency. The model predicts a significant increase in Egypt's urban mobility by utilizing the possibilities of IoT and 5G technologies, which would improve Egypt's towns' livability and efficiency. The goal of this paper is to modernize Egypt's traffic management system and bring it into compliance with global guidelines for intelligent transportation networks.

Abstract:Assessing soil quality is considered one the most important indicators to ensure planned and sustainable use of agricultural lands according to their potential. The current study was carried out to develop a spatial model for the assessment of soil quality, based on four main quality indices, Fertility Index (FI), Physical Index (PI), Chemical Index (CI), and Geomorphologic Index (GI), as well as the Geographic Information System (GIS) and remote sensing data (RS). In addition to the GI, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) parameter were added to assess soil quality in the study area (western part of Matrouh Governorate, Egypt) as accurately as possible. The study area suffers from a lack of awareness of agriculture practices, and it depends on seasonal rain for cultivation. Thus, it is very important to assess soil quality to deliver valuable data to decision makers and regional governments to find the best ways to improve soil quality and overcome the food security problem. We integrated a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) with Sentinel-2 satellite images to extract landform units of the study area. Forty-eight soil profiles were created to represent identified geomorphic units of the investigated area. We used the model builder function and a geostatistical approach based on ordinary kriging interpolation to map the soil quality index of the study area and categorize it into different classes. The soil quality (SQ) of the study area, classified into four classes (i.e., high quality (SQ2), moderate quality (SQ3), low quality (SQ4), and very low quality (SQ5)), occupied 0.90%, 21.87%, 22.22%, and 49.23% of the total study area, respectively. In addition, 5.74% of the study area was classified as uncultivated area as a reference. The developed soil quality model (DSQM) shows substantial agreement (0.67) with the weighted additive model, according to kappa coefficient statics, and significantly correlated with land capability R2 (0.71). Hence, the model provides a full overview of SQ in the study area and can easily be implemented in similar environments to identify soil quality challenges and fight the negative factors that influence SQ, in addition to achieving environmental sustainability.

Abstract:A crucial necessity for precision land management is the production of contour maps that accurately depict the variance in soil properties within fields. This study addresses a framework for assessing the spatial distribution of specific soil properties in remote newly reclaimed area south Farafra Oasis, Western Desert, Egypt. Its goal is to construct a statistical model for assessing farming progress and determining its profitability. An artificial neural network model was introduced to analyze the statistical correlation and regression relationships and simulate the geospatial distribution patterns of the investigated soil variables. Exploring the relief aspect, physiographic features, soil qualities, and specific crop criteria were combined using geographic information system and raster data coverage to generate thematic maps that were used to set up the assessment algorithm. The majority of the soil parameters studied are found high spatially dependent. According to the Automat Land Evaluation System, the most suited crops for the arid studied area were clover, groundnut, sesame, wheat, alfalfa, barley, soybean, sunflower, and watermelon. The clay texture composition and soil salinity caused by human activity are two key limiting parameters that determine yield production in the research area. Following a choice to improve decision soil property system could enhance with land capability management. The spatial distribution analysis of soil data verified to be effective techniques for meeting the high computational demands.

Abstract:Egypt suffers from severe water scarcity, which affects the sustainability of agricultural production. Therefore, the sustainable use of available water resources under water scarcity requires the adoption of water allocation policies favoring conservative and efficient use. Water management with free satellite data and geographical information system modeling capabilities can be a valuable approach for optimizing the benefits from the available water resources to meet the requirements for agricultural lands. This study aims to (i) detect and evaluate changes in agricultural areas because of urbanization and reclamation activities using Landsat data in 1999, 2009, and 2019 and (ii) update the irrigation water demand by monitoring the seasonal changes of agricultural area based on normalized difference vegetation index. Water management of Fayoum Governorate in Egypt is characterized by a non-uniform distribution flow over its canals; thus, two pilot areas are selected. The first site is the Sinnuris canal, the served areas of which represents the urbanization problem. The other site is the Gharaq canal, the served areas of which represents the urbanization and agricultural expansion situations. The results reveal that changes in agricultural areas considerably affect the uniformity of water management. Urbanization activities reduce the agricultural area by ∼5.0% and 5.7% in Sinnuris and Gharaq served areas, respectively. However, the newly cultivated lands in Gharaq preserve an increase of 5.8% in the total agricultural area. The considerably changed water allocation strategies in these districts since Sinnuris has an excess of 1.5 m3/s of water supply, while the Gharaq area faced an irrigation shortage of 0.26 m3/s in 2019. As per the proposed approach, the decision-makers can readjust the water allocation plan to satisfy the water requirements for other demand areas.
Assessment of groundwater quality using geographical information system (GIS), at north-east Cairo, Egypt

Abstract:The present investigation has been conducted to delineate the hydrogeochemical and environmental factors that control the water quality of the groundwater resources in the north-east of Cairo. A complementary approach based on hydrogeochemistry and a geographical information system (GIS) based protectability index has been employed for conducting this work. The results from the chemical analysis revealed that the groundwater of the Quaternary aquifer is less saline than that of the Miocene aquifer and the main factors that control the groundwater salinity in the studied area are primarily related to the genesis of the original recharging water modified after by leaching, dissolution, cation exchange, and fertilizer leachate. The computed groundwater quality index (WQI) falls into two categories: fair for almost all the Miocene groundwater samples, while the Quaternary groundwater samples are all have a good quality. The retarded flow and non-replenishment of the Miocene aquifer compared to the renewable active recharge of the Quaternary aquifer can explain this variation of WQI. The index and overlay approach exemplified by the DUPIT index has been used to investigate the protectability of the study aquifers against diffuse pollutants. Three categories (highly protectable less vulnerable, moderately protectable moderately vulnerable and less protectable highly vulnerable) have been determined and areally mapped.
