Abstract:Biochar converted from waste products is being considered as an alternative adsorbent for removal of aqueous heavy metal(loid)s. In this work, experimental and modeling investigations were conducted to examine the effect of biochars pyrolytically produced from municipal solid wastes on removing aqueous As(V) before and after activated by 2 M KOH solution. Results showed that the highest adsorption capacity of pristine biochars was 24.49 mg/g. The pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir adsorption isotherm model can preferably describe the adsorption process. The activated biochar showed enhanced As(V) adsorption ability with an adsorption capacity of 30.98 mg/g, which was more than 1.3 times of pristine biochars, and 2-10 times of modified biochars reported by other literatures. Increase of surface area and changes of porous texture, especially the functional groups on the surface of activated biochars are the major contributors to its more efficient adsorption of As(V). Enhanced Tetracycline Adsorption Using KOH-Modified Biochar Derived from Waste Activated Sludge in Aqueous Solutions

Abstract:Antibiotic pollution poses a serious environmental concern worldwide, posing risks to ecosystems and human well-being. Transforming waste activated sludge into adsorbents for antibiotic removal aligns with the concept of utilizing waste to treat waste. However, the adsorption efficiency of these adsorbents is currently limited. This study identified KOH modification as the most effective method for enhancing tetracycline (TC) adsorption by sludge biochar through a comparative analysis of acid, alkali, and oxidant modifications. The adsorption characteristics of TC upon unmodified sludge biochar (BC) as well as KOH-modified sludge biochar (BC-KOH) were investigated in terms of equilibrium, kinetics, and thermodynamics. BC-KOH exhibited higher porosity, greater specific surface area, and increased abundance of oxygen-based functional groups compared to BC. The TC adsorption on BC-KOH conformed the Elovich and Langmuir models, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 243.3 mg/g at 298 K. The adsorption mechanisms included ion exchange, hydrogen bonding, pore filling, and electrostatic adsorption, as well as π-π interactions. Interference with TC adsorption on BC-KOH was observed with HCO3−, PO43−, Ca2+, and Mg2+, whereas Cl−, NO3−, and SO42− ions exhibited minimal impact on the adsorption process. Following three cycles of utilization, there was a slight 5.94% reduction in the equilibrium adsorption capacity, yet the adsorption capacity remained 4.5 times greater than that of unmodified sludge BC, underscoring its significant potential for practical applications. This research provided new insights to the production and application of sludge biochar for treating antibiotic-contaminated wastewater.

Abstract:Modification of pristine biochars has received increasing attentions due to the significant potential in enhancing adsorption performance. In this work, the co-modification of KOH and KMnO4 on biochar (K-Mn-BC) was performed, with the effect of KOH/KMnO4 modification on biochar properties and their adsorption toward tetracycline (TC) being extensively explored. Results showed that KOH/KMnO4 modification can significantly regulate biochars to form hierarchical structure. The obtained K-Mn-BC was characterized with a high specific surface area (1524.6 m2 g-1) and total pore volume (0.85 cm3 g-1). In addition, the K-Mn-BC exhibited a high adsorption capacity of 584.19 mg g-1 toward TC at 318 K, and pseudo-second-order (R2:0.993～0.998) and Langmuir (R2: 0.834～0.874) models can fit well with the adsorption behavior. Moreover, the obtained K-Mn-BC can efficiently adsorb TC within a wide pH range (3.0-10.0), and were not affected by the co-existing ions. The possible mechanisms for the high adsorption capacity were ascribed to the pore filling and π-π interaction, following by hydrogen bonding and metal complexation. The obtained K-Mn-BC is a suitable adsorbent for TC removal from water due to the hierarchical structure, high adsorption capacity, and stable adsorption effect.

Abstract:Application of biochar as an adsorbent for wastewater treatment has obtained a tremendous research interest owning to their low cost and surface functionality. In this research, an iron loaded sludge biochar was successfully prepared through a simple and economical one-step modification hydrothermal method. The iron loaded sludge biochar possesses large amounts of surface organic functional groups (such as hydroxy, carboxyl and aromatic ring, etc.), smaller particle size (about 10 nm) as well as relative higher surface area (82.780 m2 g-1) than of the pristine one. The selective removal of two kinds of antibiotics by the prepared products was demonstrated. Experimental data was ﬁtted to isotherm and kinetic models, and thermodynamic parameters were also calculated. In the single antibiotic system, the maximum adsorption amount of tetracycline (TC) and doxycycline (DOX) could reach 104.86 and 128.98 mg g-1 at 293.15 K, respectively. In the binary antibiotics system, there was an antagonistic effect between TC and DOX. Furthermore, the adsorption of TC was much more inhibited than that of DOX owning to its deferent steric hindrance of molecular structure.

Abstract:A renewable tri-metallic spinel decorated biochar adsorbent (MZF-BC) was fabricated by a facile hydrothermal method and to remove tetracycline. The physicochemical properties of MZF-BC were well studied. MZF-BC with a hybrid pore structure of mesopores (~7.6 nm) and macropores (~50 nm) has the maximum tetracycline adsorption capacity reaching 142.4 mg g −1 . Through the study of adsorption kinetics, isotherms and key influencing factors, it was found that MZF-BC adsorption on tetracycline was primarily multi-layer effect with the initial adsorption behavior of pore filling associated with hydrogen bonding and π-π stacking. Furthermore, the MZF-BC performs excellent regeneration ability by driving Fenton-like catalysis as the self-cleaning process in the liquid phase. This study contributes to a new insight into the in-situ regeneration of biochar-based adsorbents after adsorbing organic pollutants in pharmaceutical wastewater treatment.

Abstract:The remediation of combined pollution of heavy metals and antibiotics in an aqueous environment remains challenging. Through magnetite (Fe3O4) dispersion followed by sulfonation modification, we report a novel bifunctional biochar-based composite (labeled Fe3O4@BC<bold>-</bold>SO3H) for simultaneous removal of arsenite (As(III)) and tetracycline (TC) in aqueous solutions. Batch experiments in single-solute systems show that Fe3O4@BC<bold>-</bold>SO3H exhibits faster kinetic and higher adsorption capacity than raw biochar, Fe3O4, and magnetite-dispersed biochar (Fe3O4@BC), thus leading to enhanced removal efficiency for either As(III) or TC. More notably, Fe3O4@BC<bold>-</bold>SO3H can simultaneously remove above 85% of As(III) and TC compared with less than 50% removal of As(III) and TC by biochar, Fe3O4, and Fe3O4@BC. Combining the spectroscopic analyses, the co-removal process of As(III) and TC indicates a unique mechanism with two-stage reactions, which involves As(III) redox transformation in the first stage and TC adsorption in the second stage. This study proposes a new strategy to design biochar-based composites for the decontamination of As(III) and TC. Overall, the excellent performance and stability of Fe3O4@BC<bold>-</bold>SO3H show its substantial potential as a low-cost, highly efficient, and eco-friendly material for the remediation of combined pollution in water.
Porous biochar derived from walnut shell as an efficient adsorbent for tetracycline removal

Abstract:In this study, a high-performance porous adsorbent was prepared from biochar through a simple one-step alkali-activated pyrolysis treatment of walnut shells, and it was effective in removing tetracycline (TC). The specific surface area (SSA) of potassium hydroxide-pretreated walnut shell-derived biochar pyrolyzed at 900°C (KWS900) increased remarkably compared to that of the pristine walnut shell and reached 1713.87±37.05 m 2 ·g −1 . The maximum adsorption capacity of KWS900 toward TC was 607.00±31.87 mg·g −1 . The pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models were well suited to describe the TC adsorption process onto KWS900. The KWS900 exhibited high stability and reusability for TC adsorption in the presence of co-existing anions or cations over a wide pH range of 1.0–11.0. Further investigations demonstrated that the proposed adsorption mechanism involved pore filling, hydrogen bonding, π–π stacking, and electrostatic interaction. These findings provide a valuable reference for developing biochar-based adsorbents for pollutant removal.

Abstract:Activation is an important pathway that can enhance the adsorption capacity of biochar. In this study, a modified tea waste biochar (MTWBC) was prepared via a two-step pyrolysis approach with KHCO3 activation. Pristine tea waste biochar (TWBC) was also produced as control via one-step pyrolysis without activation. Various characterizations were undertaken to investigate the influence of modification on the morphology, composition, carbon structure, surface area, and functional group of biochar, including scanning electron microscope (SEM), surface area and pore analyzer, element analysis, point of zero charge (pHPZC), X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). After KHCO3 activation treatment, the surface area, total pore volume, and micropore volume of MTWBC reached 1981 m2·g-1, 0.8547 cm3·g-1, and 0.6439 cm3·g-1 which were 7.34-fold, 7.27-fold, and 7.30-fold increases, respectively, compared with TWBC. The aromaticity, hydrophilicity, and polarity of the MTWBC increased after modification. More graphitization with less defective structures occurred in MTWBC after modification. The C-, O-, and N-containing groups in MTWBC also changed after the reaction of KHCO3. The pseudo-second-order and Freundlich models best described the adsorption process on biochar. The maximum adsorption capacity of tetracycline (TC) on MTWBC reached 293.46 mg·g-1, which was 15-fold more than that of TWBC (19.68 mg·g-1). An alkaline environment decreased the TC adsorption on biochars. The presence of Na+, K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ inhibited TC adsorption onto biochars. The influence of Cu2+ on TC adsorption by biochars depends on its initial concentration. The enhanced adsorption capacity of TC on MTWBC was mainly attributable to the large surface area, the improved pore volume, and more aromatic structure. The adsorption mechanism was based on pore filling and π-π EDA interaction. Therefore, KHCO3 activated biochar has the potential to remove TC from aquatic environments.

Abstract:In this study, discarded cigarette butts were used as a precursor for preparing magnetic porous biochar with a facile annealing method. The magnetic porous biochar was applied to remove tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) from aqueous solution. It exhibited excellent adsorption capacity for TCH, which was much higher than various similar materials reported. At the same time, the adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherms of TCH were well fitted to the pseudo-second-order models and Freundlich models, respectively. The thermodynamics experiments proved that the adsorption on magnetic porous biochar was an endothermic reaction. Furthermore, the adsorption mechanism was explored, and the outstanding adsorption ability was mainly dependent on the pore filling effect, electrostatic interaction, and π-π interaction. By using the magnetic porous biochar, the real water samples were treated and high removal efficiency to TCH was obtained. What's more, the excellent reusability endowed the magnetic porous biochar with great potential as adsorbents for practical application.

Abstract:Tetracycline is frequently found in various environments and poses significant ecological risks. Calcium hydroxide-modified biochar has shown potential as a material for removing multiple classes of pollutants from wastewater streams. The tetracycline-adsorption performance and mechanism of alkali-modified biochars derived from nine wastes (corn straw, rice straw, swine manure, cypress powder, wheat straw, peanut shell, walnut shell powder, soybean straw, and corncobs) were investigated in the study. Among the four alkalis tested, calcium hydroxide exhibited the most effective modification effects at a pyrolysis temperature of 500 °C. Straw biomass was most suitable to be modified by calcium hydroxide, and calcium hydroxide-modified biochar showed the highest adsorption performance for tetracycline. The maximum adsorption capacities were 8.22 mg g−1 for pristine corn straw biochar and 93.46 mg g−1 for calcium hydroxide-modified corn straw biochar. The tetracycline adsorption mechanism by calcium hydroxide-modified corn straw biochar involved hydrogen bonding, oxygen-containing functional groups, Ca2+ metal complexation, and electrostatic attraction. Consequently, calcium hydroxide-modified corn straw biochar emerges as an environment-friendly, cost-effective, and efficient tetracycline adsorbent.

Abstract:The effective removal of oxytetracycline hydrochloride (OTC) from the water environment is of great importance. Adsorption as a simple, stable, and cost-effective technology is regarded as an important method for removing OTC. Herein, a low-cost biochar with a developed mesoporous structure was synthesized via pyrolysis of poplar leaf with potassium bicarbonate (KHCO3) as the activator. KHCO3 can endow biochar with abundant mesopores, but excessive KHCO3 cannot continuously promote the formation of mesoporous structures. In comparison with all of the prepared biochars, PKC-4 (biochar with a poplar leaf to KHCO3 mass ratio of 5:4) shows the highest adsorption performance for OTC as it has the largest surface area and richest mesoporous structure. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Freundlich equilibrium model are more consistent with the experimental data, which implies that the adsorption process is multi-mechanism and multi-layered. In addition, the maximum adsorption capacities of biochar are slightly affected by pH changes, different metal ions, and different water matrices. Moreover, the biochar can be regenerated by pyrolysis, and its adsorption capacity only decreases by approximately 6% after four cycles. The adsorption of biochar for OTC is mainly controlled by pore filling, though electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and π-π interaction are also involved. This study realizes biomass waste recycling and highlights the potential of poplar leaf-based biochar for the adsorption of antibiotics.

Adsorption characterization of tetracycline antibiotics on alkali-functionalized rice husk biochar and its evaluation on phytotoxicity to seed germination

Abstract:This work presented adsorption characteristics of tetracycline antibiotics (TCs) on KOH-functionalized rice husk biochar pyrolyzed at 700 °C (KBC700) and evaluation on phytotoxicity of TCs-adsorbed aqueous phase to seed germination. Specifically, KBC700 gained eightfold rise in specific surface area by KOH activation. Predominant monolayer chemisorption helped KBC700 control TCs, and spontaneous and exothermic features were identified by thermodynamic studies. KBC700 could efficiently work in a wide pH range (4.5 ~ 9.5), as well as in simulated eutrophic water and co-existing cationic solution. Humic acid exerted negative impact on TCs disposal. Outstanding regeneration capability and stability were also found during adsorption-desorption cycles. Mechanism discussion implied predominant pore filling and π-π interaction accompanied by hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction involved in TCs-removal process. Importantly, less phytotoxicity to seed germination was found in TCs-adsorbed aqueous phase. Collectively, these findings contribute to adsorption properties recognition and subsequent application for KOH-modified rice rusk biochar in environmental TCs remediation.
Self-propagating synthesis of Zn-loaded biochar for tetracycline elimination

Abstract:Herein, a novel Zn-loaded biochar (Zn-LBC) originating from Fraxinus pennsylvanica Marsh leaves was successfully prepared through a simple and rapid self-propagating combustion reaction (SHS) and could serve as an efficient adsorbent for tetracycline (TC) elimination from water. The adsorption performance was analyzed via a series of characterizations and batch adsorption experiments. The results showed that the novel adsorbent Zn-LBC exhibited an excellent TC adsorption capacity (159.64 mg/g), which was 2.63 times higher than that of the original biochar (60.78 mg/g). The pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Freundlich isothermal model fit the adsorption data well. It is noteworthy that Zn-LBC had little effect on the adsorption capacity of TC in the 0-10 mg/L various coexisting ion range and presence of humic acid (HA). In addition, the adsorption test of TC using hospital wastewater as the water sample also achieved satisfactory results (raw influent: 52.65 mg/g, final effluent: 85.64 mg/g). FT-IR and XPS investigations showed that the TC adsorption mechanism included surface complexation, π-π interactions, and hydrogen bonds. The results provide new ideas for exploring low-cost and highly efficient modified biochar adsorbent for TC elimination.
One-step synthesis of iron and nitrogen co-doped porous biochar for efficient removal of tetracycline from water: Adsorption performance and fixed-bed column

Abstract:Here, Fe/N co-doped porous biochars (FeNKBCs) were obtained by grinding corncob, CH 3 COOK, FeCl 3 ·6H 2 O, and C 3 H 6 N 6 via one-step synthesis and were applied to remove antibiotics from wastewater. Notably, CH 3 COOK had an excellent porous activation ability. The developed nanotubular structure of Fe1N2KBC had a high pore volume (V total ) (1.2131 cm 3 /g) and specific surface areas (SSA) (2083.54 m 2 /g), which showed outstanding sorption abilities for TC (764.35 mg/g), OTC (560.82 mg/g), SMX (291.45 mg/g), and SMT (354.65 mg/g). The adsorption process of TC was controlled by chemisorption. Moreover, Fe1N2KBC has an excellent dynamic adsorption performance (620.14 mg/g) in a fixed-bed column. The properties of SSA, V total , and the content of graphite N and Fe–N were positively correlated with TC adsorption capacity. The high performance of TC removal was related to π-π stacking, pore-filling, hydrogen bond, and electrostatic interaction. Fe1N2KBC possessed stable sorption amounts in pH 2–12 and actual water, and well reuse performance. The results of this work present an effective preparation method of Fe/N porous biochar for TC-contaminated water remediation.

Abstract:Widespread environmental pollution caused by the misuse of tetracyclines (TCs) has become a global issue, necessitating the development of water treatment materials for antibiotic removal. Magnetic biochar (MBC) possesses several advantages, including a wide range of raw material sources and low cost, making it a potential adsorbent that overcomes the limitations of biochar (BC) regarding solid-liquid separation. In this study, peanut shell-derived magnetic biochar loaded with Fe3O4 (Fe3O4/BC) was prepared to study its adsorption performance and environmental factors for TCs. The adsorption mechanism was revealed using adsorption isotherms, adsorption kinetics and thermodynamics. The results showed that the total pore volume was increased, and surface oxygen-containing functional groups were formed of that before BC modification. In a wide pH range, Fe3O4/BC showed high adsorption performance for TCs, with an adsorption rate of over 85%. Chemical adsorption was the main adsorption mechanism, including hydrogen bonding, as well as π-π interactions, electrostatic interactions, intrapore diffusion and hydrophobic interactions. Moreover, reusability and obtaining cost of the material were analyzed, demonstrating its promising application prospects. This study will promote the application of Fe3O4/BC in the removal of antibiotics pollutants from water.

Abstract:The treatment of dye pollutants remains a challenge in the current management of the water environment. In this study, an innovative biochar material co-modified with KOH and chitosan was synthesized. The morphology and physicochemical properties of the modified biochar material were assessed by SEM, FTIR, XPS, XRD, and thermogravimetric analyses. The results revealed a significant enhancement in chitosan loading due to the pretreatment of biochar with KOH. The co-modified biochar with KOH and chitosan (CHKBC) exhibited an enriched composition of functional groups such as − COOH, −NH 2 , and − OH, leading to a substantial increase in the maximum adsorption of MB by the biochar from 8.83 mg g −1 to 62.04 mg g −1 , a 7.03-fold increase. The excellent adsorption performance of CHKBC for MB was maintained at different solution temperature (288–––318 K) and pH (5–––11) conditions. The main adsorption mechanisms of MB removal by CHKBC involved ion exchange, pore filling, electrostatic attraction, π - π interactions, and hydrogen bonding. Overall, CHKBC has higher chitosan loading, more uniform chitosan distribution, and better adsorption efficiency of MB. It is a promising adsorption material with low cost and a simple production process.

Abstract:The efficient removal of antibiotics such as tetracycline (TC), which are frequently detected in multiple environments, has attracted widespread attention due to the potential risks to human health and the environment. Biochar (BC), with its low cost, effective adsorption properties, and excellent regeneration performance, has been widely used for antibiotic removal by adsorption in recent years. However, the limited antibiotic adsorption capacity of BC affects its practical application. Thus, there is a need to modify BC to enhance its practicability in the treatment of wastewater. This review describes the raw materials and preparation methods, including pyrolysis, hydrothermal liquefaction and microwave pyrolysis, of BC. Furthermore, the effects of biological, physical and chemical modification methods on the physicochemical properties of BC were analyzed and discussed. Moreover, the influencing factors and adsorption mechanism of TC and regeneration methods of BC and the removal of TC from real wastewater by BC were also reviewed. Finally, there is a lack of research on the use of BC for treating TC-polluted water, and analyses and ideas for the future growth of BC adsorption to TC are provided. The contents of this article are intended to help scholars gain a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of the latest progress in this field.

Efficient Removal of Tetracycline from Wastewater Via KHCO3-activated Biochar: Characterization, Performance, and Mechanism

Abstract:Tetracycline (TC) is widely used in the aquaculture and healthcare industries. However, massive TC is discharged into the surrounding aquatic environment through prodrugs or parent compounds, as neither humans nor animals can metabolize it directly. TC contamination of water has become a significant worldwide environmental challenge. In this study, a novel biochar RK1.2BC was generated by rapeseed residue co-pyrolyzed with KHCO3. Adsorption experiments and characterization techniques were performed to examine the performance and mechanisms of RK1.2BC in removing TC from wastewater. These findings demonstrated that RK1.2BC is an effective material for TC removal. At 298.15 K and pH 6.0, the maximal capacity of RK1.2BC for TC adsorption in theory was 783.82 mg·g−1, approximately 12.37-fold greater than nonactivated biochar. The specific surface area (1570.28 m2·g−1) and the total volume of pores (0.94 m3·g−1) of RK1.2BC increased 360-fold and 94-fold, respectively. RK1.2BC maintained high adsorption capacity across a broad range of water pH (2.0–11.0). The RK1.2BC is highly resistant to ionic interference, TC adsorption capacity was >450.96 mg·g−1 at 100 mg·L−1 of anions (SO42−, NO3−, PO43−, HCO3−, CO32−), cations (Na+, Ca2+, K+, Mg2+, Cd2+), and natural organic matter (Humic Acid and Citric Acid). RK1.2BC demonstrated excellent TC adsorption in natural water (>402.38 mg·g−1) and retained a strong ability to adsorb (>243.08 mg·g−1) following five rounds of desorption-regeneration. Furthermore, TC adsorption process was governed primarily by homogeneous monolayer chemisorption, the adsorption mechanism involves π-π EDA interactions, hydrophobic interactions, electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and pore filling.

Abstract:In this work, bio-char, a mass productive by-product of biomass fast pyrolysis, was adopted as an adsorbent to remove tetracycline (TC) from aqueous solution. To enhance the adsorption capacity, a simple modification of bio-char with acid and alkali was carried out. Bio-char samples were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherm. The results show that the alkali treated bio-char possesses larger surface area than those of raw and acid treated bio-chars, and accordingly exhibits a more excellent adsorption performance (58.8mg/g) than the other two bio-chars and other adsorbents reported previously. The graphite-like structure of bio-char facilitates the formation of π–π interactions between ring structure in tetracycline molecule and graphite-like sheets. The surface area showed significant effects on TC adsorption as well as O-containing functional groups, whereas the initial pH of solution has small effects on TC adsorption under the experimental conditions.
