Abstract:The present study was carried out to explore the efficiency of marine Streptomyces sviceus in the bioremediation of reactive textile azo dyes by considering Congo red-21 as model dye. Streptomyces sviceus shows optimum decolourization of Congo red-21 in nutrient glucose broth at 96-h duration under static conditions. Toxicity of the degraded metabolites of Congo red-21 was assessed through phytotoxicity, genotoxicity, acute toxicity and cytotoxicity assays. The Allium cepa roots treated with Congo red-21 dye exhibited chromosomal aberrations like polyploidy interphase nucleus and vagrant chromosomes. In contrast, no significant changes were noticed with degraded sample of Congo red-21. These results demonstrate the nontoxic nature of the degraded sample of Congo red-21 on the growth of higher plants and further confirm the bioremediation potential of marine Streptomyces sviceus.
