Abstract:Intangible cultural heritage (ICH) is an invaluable treasure for human being and China is a country endowed with rich ICH. Among all the measures of safeguarding ICH, intellectual property (IP) tools are effective while controversial. As China started relatively late in the legal protection of ICH, the gap between legislation and judiciary needs to be filled in. This study examines the IP protection of ICH in China based on the current laws and regulations and then provides a semiotic approach to the relevant legal evolution in China. This study, taking in some experiences outside China, goes further to provide recommendations for improving the IP protection in China.

Abstract:ICH, Intangible cultural heritage, including traditional theatre, traditional handicrafts, oral literature and so on, is a concept put forward by the UNESCO in 2003. Its most fundamental characteristic is its “dynamism”, which often changes with the environment. Variables that influence the inheritance of intangible cultural heritage include inheritors, national policies, laws and regulations, etc. And because there are so many variables, it is often more difficult to protect intangible cultural heritage than tangible cultural heritage. Intangible cultural heritage is an important part of China’s cultural treasury. In recent times, due to the impact of industrial civilisation, some ancient intangible cultures have been faced with problems such as lack of successors and loss of skills. In modern times, the Chinese government pays more attention to the protection of ICH. In this test. This paper will take the national intangible cultural heritage, Jingjiang palm puppetry, as an example to explore the protection and inheritance of China’s localised intangible cultural heritage from two perspectives: the government and the private sector.

Abstract:Abstract The digital preservation of intangible cultural heritage has become a major emphasis and challenge in China. This study investigated the state of the field by examining the activities of the local Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Centers at Nanyang, Kaifeng, Xianning, Chibi, Sanming and Jingdezhen, using semi-structured interviews to document the status of digital preservation of intangible cultural heritage in China. This study found that the digital preservation system of Chinese cultural heritage has a clear structure and pluralistic components. The centers are rich in digital resources, but disordered in their storage, and are supported by policies, but weak in the area of management. It is necessary to further clarify these institutions’ rights and responsibilities, formulate storage standards, build shared platforms, and strengthen digital preservation management.

The goal is to assess the potential of enhancing heritage preservation through digitization. By investigating the impact of digital communication on the protection and dissemination of intangible cultural heritage and conducting in-depth case analyses, the article highlights the profound role of digitalization in cultural heritage preservation. Additionally, it provides recommendations and feasibility references for the digital development of intangible cultural heritage, aiming to secure our cultural legacy and promote the ongoing inheritance of Chinese culture. The research suggests that digitization can revitalize intangible cultural heritage, accelerate its creative transformation, and integrate it seamlessly into modern life while preserving its core role in heritage conservation [1].

Abstract:This study explores the complex dynamic interplay between cultural heritage and language protection in the process of dialect planning in Suzhou city. In the context of social tensions surrounding the decline of local dialects and minority languages in China, the central and local governments have inaugurated projects for protecting language resources. Using Cooper's accounting scheme, this study contrasts the Chinese Language Resources Protection Project with the local initiative in the Suzhou Dialect Protection Project. It is found that the latter better exemplifies the role of cultural heritage in sustainable language protection. To further interpretate the policy making and practice of dialect protection, this study analyzes underlying motivations along the lines of '7i model' proposed by Ager. In-depth interviews with discrete groups of stakeholders illuminate the pronounced influence of 'cultural confidence' in fostering regional language protection, achieved through holistic societal participation. Finally, this article introduces a novel framework for sustainable language resources protection: 'Policy-Academia-Schooling-Services-Consumption (PASSCo)', showcased by Suzhou's efforts in inheriting intangible cultural heritage: Suzhou Pingtan. Confronting global challenges of linguistic and cultural preservation, the Suzhou model provides insights into marrying language protection and cultural heritage with socio-economic growth, offering strategies for sustainable regional development in diverse contexts.

Abstract:This paper reveals the contemporary Chinese state's active role in shaping the country's religion-related intangible cultural heritage (ICH) safeguarding, through a systematic review of China's official inventories of national representative ICH projects and extensive investigations of relevant local practices and initiatives. Although China is ruled by a political party officially embracing an atheist ideology, various elements of the contemporary Chinese state have been proactively involved in safeguarding religion-related ICH. The Chinese state's involvement in de facto religion-related ICH safeguarding predates its adoption of explicit ICH safeguarding narratives. Still, the Chinese state's practices and initiatives in safeguarding religion-related ICH flourished after ratifying the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2004. Since then, China's central government has established a nationwide framework to recognise representative ICH items, including religion-related ones. Beyond Beijing, various local state agencies have also developed noticeable enthusiasm for supporting the safeguarding of religion-related ICH. In addition to engaging directly with ICH safeguarding, the contemporary Chinese state has also shaped China's religion-related ICH by working closely with some academics and religious groups.

Abstract:In recent years, the development and utilization of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) has become an increasingly significant research topic. Worldwide, however, little research has been systematically and comprehensively conducted to review relevant ICH literature. The application CiteSpace was used to identify the research hotspots, frontiers, and trends in China’s ICH field from 2003 to 2020. The results showed that the quantity of published literature has steadily increased throughout the respective period. Scholars and research institutions alike have shown poor cooperation whereby ICH protection received most of the attention. In addition, the digitalization of ICH is an inevitable trend in ICH protection and inheritance, while the combination of ICH and cultural industries constitutes an important approach to ICH utilization and communication. Hence, the ultimate goal of ICH research consists of seeking ways to achieve its sustainable development to satisfy the increasing cultural demands. Findings furthermore show that ICH for rural revitalization constitutes a unique research topic with Chinese characteristics. This study provides insights for scholars and practitioners worldwide to facilitate a better understanding of ICH in China.

Abstract:Heritage education can enable social empowerment. Within the broader goal of social empowerment, a current challenge is to establish principles that promote social participation in traditional education. The practice of protecting intangible cultural heritage in China has developed its own unique working model based on the basic theoretical level of UNESCO. This research used cultural citizenship as a theoretical guide, focused on the traditional embroidery craftsmanship of China’s intangible cultural heritage, and conducted exploratory research on the learning intention and value influence indicators of citizens participating in intangible cultural heritage. The research design of this study was divided into two phases: the first phase was designed to collect evaluation indicators that affect the learning of intangible cultural heritage skills, and to support these data using semi-structured in-depth interviews. In the second phase, the convergence of the value indicators that affect the learning of intangible cultural heritage techniques was completed using questionnaire surveys and statistical analyses. Factor analysis was performed using SPSS software. SEM (structural equation modeling) confirmatory analysis was performed using Amos software. Through a two-stage hybrid study, a value recognition scale for the informal educational inheritance of intangible cultural heritage handicrafts was obtained within the local context of China. The scale contains four first-level indicators (ICH’s authenticity, cultural identity, performed value, and social recognition) and 17 second-level indicators. The research results were based on UNESCO’s education indicators for SDG 4, and put forward principles for practices aimed at protecting China’s intangible cultural heritage’s local informal education. Reflecting on the Chinese tradition of citizen participation in protecting intangible cultural heritage could provide references for the practice of intangible cultural heritage protection in other fields and regions. This is consistent with the UN’s SDG 4.7 (ensure all learners acquire knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development).

Abstract:The multilevel functions and political connotations of culture necessitate the protection of intangible cultural heritages.The ever-changing characteristic of culture asks for dynamic strategies of protection.The social function of belief endows related intangible cultural heritages with historical significance and value of protection.In the practical domain,the integrity of culture requires protection both in the micro-ecological and macro-ecological senses.Considering the negligence of grassroots participation in our current protection practices,we should advocate participatory strategies on the basis of understanding and appreciating the differences between emic and etic standpoints,taking advantage of grassroots wisdom and local knowledge,and awakening the cultural consciousness of the communities concerned.Furthermore,we should try to prevent cultural ″filtration″ and ″cultural stratification″ by engaging an independent party in the process of evaluating intangible cultural heritages,by setting up the list of intangible cultural heritages in imminent danger,and by breaking the rigid linkage between protection funds and ranking.

Abstract:In the context of contemporary globalization, the preservation and safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage has assumed heightened significance. Serving as a pivotal cultural asset, intangible cultural heritage plays an essential role in upholding cultural diversity and fostering societal progress. This study combines micro and macro-level management practices, student engagement theory, and cultural-historical activity theory to conduct quantitative research on 500 art and design students from 16 universities in Shaanxi Province, China. The primary research findings reveal a positive correlation between students' sense of responsibility and cultural heritage awareness, indicating deepening responsibility with heightened awareness. However, general knowledge and student-teacher interactions, though positively correlated, lack statistical significance. The study underscores the crucial role of institutional support and pragmatic education in enhancing students' intangible cultural heritage transmission awareness. Practical, hands-on learning experiences and strong institutional backing drive a deeper understanding and appreciation of cultural heritage among students. These insights have implications for educational policy and curriculum design, emphasizing the need for a multi-faceted approach to intangible cultural heritage education that incorporates both theoretical knowledge and practical experiences, and underscores the importance of institutional support in this endeavor.

Abstract:Despite a considerable body of research focusing on the preservation and promotion of intangible cultural heritage (ICH), the actual impact of ICH on shaping the cultural life of local communities needs further acknowledgement. Since 2004, China has rapidly engaged with ICH and the associated practices stipulated by UNESCO. Based on a critical analysis of two cultural festivals in China, this study illustrates the impact of official heritage discourse on local communities. Heritage policies have adopted a particular understanding of “culture” that certifies and beautifies related cultural practices and products for commercial purposes. However, these processes of cultural reproduction transform community-based leisure activities into tourism consumption for an external public. Such changes legitimize and reinforce social inequalities within state-society relationships. This study contributes to the broader discussion on the “right to heritage” – whose rights and what rights should be considered in the issues that ICH creates as a form of cultural reproduction

This paper focused on the principles that should be followed in the protection of intangible cultural heritage projects in China, analyzed the key points and difficulties in the implementation of each principle, then analyzed and discussed the strategies for the protection of intangible cultural heritage projects from different angles. Abstract:The evolution of digital communication modalities for China's intangible cultural heritage serves to broaden communication avenues and engage wider audiences, further unlocking the economic potential of the heritage industry. This progression is crucial for advancing the digitization of ICH during the 14th Five-Year Plan in China. Derived from the collective efforts of working individuals over extended periods of production and labor, each intangible culture possesses unique transmission traits. Representing an immaterial and irreplicable historical artifact, cultural memory, and the essence of the Chinese nation, its preservation and transmission are paramount for societal development. Given its profound regional character, the cultural significance and value of ICH are inherently evident. Amidst the mobile internet era, the digital preservation of this heritage has gained precedence, encompassing digital collection, storage, restoration, reproduction, exhibition, and dissemination. However, due to knowledge constraints and technological limitations, non-lineal inheritors face challenges in digitizing ICH.

Abstract:Intangible cultural heritage (ICH) has been recognised as an indicator of the tangible heritage’s cultural diversity, which contains inherent characteristics of the community’s knowledge, practices, expressions and skills. Thus, various actions of support and collaboration to safeguard the global cultural diversity were conducted, preventing the deterioration and destruction of intangible heritage, which paved the way for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR 4.0). This study aimed to examine the safeguarding of ICH relating to a range of heritage objects, including textiles, design motifs, and crafts. Nine papers on ICH published between 2014 and 2020 were collected from several reputable databases. These articles were taken from Scopus (3 articles), Google Scholar (5 articles) and Dimensions (1 article) databases in various subject areas of social sciences using the Preferred Reporting Items Systematic reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) method. Currently, the most sophisticated means of safeguarding ICH comprised eliminating knowledge barriers, incorporating diverse cultures and technology, collaborations between organisations, eco-friendly materials and versatility in promotional strategies. The findings will contribute to the Malaysian Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 4) by providing high-quality education on intangible knowledge to industry players, tourists, and local communities. Moreover, the integration of art, knowledge, and technology have enabled deeper perception among the varied audience, providing a fundamental understanding of intangible knowledge. Lastly, this idea will enhance the sustainability of traditional human values, hoping that cultural heritage will survive and remain long-term.

Abstract:Safeguarding and inheriting a society's intangible cultural heritage (ICH) music is essential for preserving cultural identity and fostering cultural diversity. A primary motivation for the formation and continuous activities of the heritage preservation community is the concern over losing valuable cultural assets. Incomplete histories, missing documents, and limited access to both tangible and intangible resources are all repercussions of lost heritage, affecting both the public and scholarly sectors. Given the inherent fragility of intangible cultural forms such as dance, language, and music, archives tasked with preserving these records face unique challenges. These forms can easily vanish without proper documentation and preservation, reinforcing the vital role of the relevant organizations. So, this study explores the unique musical traditions of the Chongqing Three Gorges Reservoir area (CTGRA), along with the various methods for protecting and promoting this ICH. In‐depth information on regional musical traditions, as well as the challenges and possibilities related to conserving and transmitting these practices, was gathered via participant observation, interviews, and field study. The major ways of preserving and transmitting ICH music are storytelling and oral practices that connect communities and musical histories and promote their identity. This study reveals several practices of preserving and transmitting ICH music, such as raising awareness of people, encouraging local artists, and using digital media and advanced technology. This study argues that the rich cultural heritage of the CTGRA is preserved and inherited to future generations by implementing strategies that leverage the power of narrative and support the continuation of these musical practices.

Abstract:Combining intangible cultural heritage (ICH) with tourism is one way of protecting living culture, and community residents have long been the most important stakeholders in these efforts. This paper explores the relationship between residents’ role in heritage conservation and heritage tourism and determines a means of protecting ICH by introducing a Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) model and data from a survey and field interviews in Jiangyong, China. The results show that inhabitants’ behavioral attitudes, subjective norms and perceptual behavior control for conserving Nüshu (an ancient and unique women’s written language) have a significant impact on intentions to protect this ICH. The external pressure of subjective norms is more important than any other factor. The sustainable development of tourism and the protection of ICH are complementary, and community involvement is critical for sustaining ICH and developing heritage tourism. Finally, the study highlights several managerial implications.
