Abstract:The rhythms of Swedish (prosody) are produced by three features: sentence stress, word stress, and accent. In principle, all semantically significant words in the sentence are stressed. Word stress is found only in words that have sentence stress. Compound words have a stress on each of the parts of the compound, but the melody of each part is different. There are two distinct accents (tones) for Swedish words of two or more syllables with sentence stress. The main function of tonal accent is to show that two syllables belong together. There are about 350 homo-phones which are distinguished only by their accents. Many of these minimal pairs are inflected forms of originally monosyllabic and originally bisyllabic words. All nouns with end articles have the same accent as in the form without end article.
