Abstract:Abstract. After the nuclear weapons testing in the 1950s and 1960s, the atmospheric tritium levels have almost returned to natural levels (pre-1950 levels), which means that tritium is becoming more effective in determining transit times in hydrological systems. It has also been demonstrated that tritium is a non-reactive noble gas and in water is not subject to chemical reactions, absorption, or dissolution/precipitation processes, so it is conservative of the geochemical fingerprint of the source. In addition, it is used as an effective tracer of water contamination by landfill leachate, allowing to detect mixing percentages of the leachate up to levels not achievable with normal chemical analyses (less than 1 %). The purpose of the present work is to deepen the knowledge of the hydrogeochemical characteristics of the aquifers in the pedemontana area of the Venetian plain, and to formulate a conceptual framework of underground water circulation, aimed at understanding phenomena of contamination by toxic metals, harmful to human health. Tritium concentration analyses were performed on selected samples of groundwater collected in different wells in the south part of Treviso city to correlate the young age of the water recharge. The abundance of young waters, in fact, indicates a vulnerability of the aquifer to climate change with respect to possible contributions of surface waters, in particular to prolonged drought periods which could induce salinization dynamics.

Abstract:Environmental isotopes are essential in hydrogeological studies, thanks to their contribution to the understanding of aquifers dynamics, vulnerability, water resources assessment, and management issues. The environmental isotopic approach plays a vital role in tracing the hydrological cycle and identifying various sources of contamination in the environment and gives independent information concerning what can be determined by a traditional hydrogeological study. Even in the framework of COP-26, isotopes have been indicated as fingerprints of climate change and therefore suitable for the evaluation of water balance and assessment of processes involved therein; in pollution studies they are used as fundamental support of traditional geochemical measures. Tritium, in particular, has been used since the 1960s to identify potential leaks in the containment walls of waste disposal sites, since its presence in the leachate (at very high levels in some cases) depends on the incorrect waste disposal of some peculiar items. Its use as a tracer of pollution by landfills is highlighted and emphasized by the very low concentrations of tritium in the natural environment. By comparing tritium content of leachate to that of water downflow from the waste disposal site, it is therefore possible to establish with a good success rate whether leachate have migrated or not out of the landfill, in the surrounding environment. An additional potential of tritium is to give a prompt indication of pollution risk in the environment indicating leaching even before the chemical indicator of pollution can be detected. This article wants to provide a contribution to the scientific community, collecting all the existing research in this field and providing data and benchmarks about this method, in particular stressing the role of tritium as an indicator of leachate transfer out of waste disposal sites.
Short-lived natural radionuclides as tracers in hydrogeological studies - A review

Abstract:Fundamental approaches to the study of groundwater rely on investigating the spatial and temporal distribution of stable and radioactive isotopes and other anthropogenic compounds in natural waterbodies. The most often used tracers for estimating groundwater flow paths and residence times, groundwater/surface water interaction as well as tracing chemical (contamination) sources include stable isotopes of water (δ 18O and δ 2H), radiocarbon (14C; t1/2 = 5730 a), tritium (3H; t1/2 = 12.43 a) as well as unreactive fluorine-containing gases (e.g., chlorofluorocarbons CCl3F or CFC-11; CCl2F3 or CFC-12; C2Cl3F3 or CFC-113; and SF6). While gas tracers are usually referred to as transient tracers and are appropriate for investigating modern flow systems, the isotopic tracers are often used to investigated paleo or regional flow systems. Stable isotopes of water can also be used to investigate groundwater/surface water interactions. Another, thus far been less frequently used group of groundwater tracers, are cosmo- and geo- genic short-lived radioisotopes. These isotopes are uniquely suited for studying a wide range of groundwater problems that have short time scales including high aquifer vulnerability to quantitative and qualitative impacts and groundwater discharge to surface waters. Here, we discuss and compare the applications of radio‑sulphur (35S; half-life t1/2 = 87 d), radio‑beryllium (7Be; t1/2 = 53 d), radio‑phosphorus (32/33P; combined t1/2 = 33 d), natural tritium (3H; t1/2 = 12.43 a), radon (222Rn; t1/2 = 3.8 d) and short-lived radium (224/223Ra; combined t1/2 = 5.2 d). The paper discusses the principles of the individual tracer methods, focusing on the isotopes' input functions or values, on sampling techniques, and on methods of analyses. Case studies that applied a combined use of the tracers are referred to for readers who wish to learn more about the application of the so far underused cosmo- and geo- genic radioisotopes as aquatic tracers.

Abstract:Tritium present in deep vadose zones is a useful tracer for estimating groundwater recharge, but its full utility is constrained by not knowing where and for how long the tritium tracing method remains applicable. We obtained 44 tritium profiles from 17 globally distributed sites with vadose zone thicknesses of 12–624 m and used transport models to estimate the number of years that tritium may still be useful. Results show that the method may still be usable for 26 of 44 soil profiles surveyed, mainly in China, Australia, the United States, South Africa, and Senegal, with a remaining useful period of between 6 and 83 years. We also developed a statistical model that uses outputs from a hydrological model to predict the applicability of the tritium tracing method. Global implementation of the statistical model showed that the method remains usable at 20% of Earth's land mass (excluding Antarctica and Greenland) over the next few decades.

Abstract:The concentration and isotopic composition of uranium (δ238U, 234U/238U activity ratio) in combination with traditional isotopes (δ18O, δ13C) were examined as potential tracers of authigenic carbonate formation in a karst aquifer. The U concentration and 234U/238U activity ratios in the tufa-precipitating sections of two connected karst rivers (Krka and Zrmanja, Croatia) decreased downstream in water and in precipitated carbonate due to active self-purification processes, i.e. adsorption of isotopically lighter U(VI) on mineral particles, sedimentation and co-precipitation with carbonate. The isotopic composition of carbonate in tufa mostly resembled the 234U/238U activity ratio and the δ238U values of dissolved U in water but was also affected by the presence of detrital carbonate flushed into the river from soil and weathered bedrock. This interpretation was supported by the δ18O and δ13C values of tufa, which were shifted out of equilibrium with river water and dissolved in organic carbon and in their isotopic signature, which showed the presence of lithic carbonate. Large fluctuations of the δ238U values of water, leachable U (eluted in acetic acid buffered with Na-acetate) and residual U fraction could not be fully explained by available data due to the overlapping U isotopic signatures of leachable (mainly carbonate) and residual fractions of soil, bedrock and tufa. Therefore, a long-term, systematic, seasonal and event-based observation of the isotopic composition of dissolved and suspended particulate U in water is necessary. Nevertheless, the U isotopes were found to have the potential to be used as identifiers of authigenic carbonate and the storage of CO2 in terrestrial river sediments, to improve knowledge on fluxes within local and global biogeochemical carbon cycle.
Development of methodology for identification and assessment of ecosystems with an underground source of tritium

Abstract:The article considers the issues of working out the suitable approaches for identifying zones with the presence of underground near-surface waters with increased concentrations of tritium discharged into a surface reservoir. The following methods were used as possible methods: determination of tritium content in snow cover, determination of tritium content in vegetation in the form of tritium of free water and organically bound tritium, determination of tritium content in river water and coastal vegetation. The studies were carried out at a previously identified site where groundwater with a tritium concentration of up to 6000 Bq/l is present, located in the vicinity of the city of Obninsk (Kaluga region, Russia). As a result of the conducted research, it was concluded that the analysis of the distribution of tritium in vegetation is an excellent methodological technique for identifying areas of location of near-surface underground waters contaminated with tritium. As a control parameter, both the concentration of tritium in the free water of plants and the content of organically bound tritium can be used. To detect underground tritium contamination the most promising use is the following indicator - the content of OBT in the shoots of woody plants. This parameter is very informative, and the sampling procedure for its determination has no seasonal restrictions, unlike such parameters as the content of tritium in grass and leaves, the content of tritium in snow cover, surface waters, which are preferably collected only in summer or winter. It should be noted that the control of surface waters of the groundwater discharge zone may not be a sufficiently informative indicator for identifying areas of polluted water inflow, since it depends on the ratio of the volumes of leaking polluted groundwater and the annual flow of the watercourse.

Abstract:In this work the development results of the TRITIUM project is presented. The main objective of the project is the construction of a near real-time monitor for low activity tritium in water, aimed at in-situ surveillance and radiological protection of river water in the vicinity of nuclear power plants. The European Council Directive 2013/51/Euratom requires that the maximum level of tritium in water for human consumption to be lower than 100 Bq/L. Tritium levels in the cooling water of nuclear power plants in normal operation are much higher than the levels caused by the natural and cosmogenic components, and may easily surmount the limit required by the Directive. The current liquid-scintillation measuring systems in environmental radioactivity laboratories are sensitive to such low levels, but they are not suitable for real-time monitoring. Moreover, there is no currently available device with enough sensitivity and monitoring capabilities that could be used for surveillance of the cooling water of nuclear power plants. A detector system based on scintillation fibers read out by photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) or silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) arrays is under development for in-water tritium measurement. This detector will be installed in the vicinity of Almaraz nuclear power plant (Spain) in Spring 2019. An overview of the project development and the results of first prototypes are presented.

Different methods for tritium determination in surface water by LSC

Abstract:The main aim of this paper was to compare different methods of preparing water samples for tritium analysis by ultra-low-level background liquid scintillation counter, Quantulus 1220. Three methods of sample preparation for low-level tritium measurement have been implemented in the Nuclear Physics Laboratory in Novi Sad: electrolytic enrichment, direct method without electrolytic enrichment and sample Oxidizer 307 method. The examined fresh water samples were rainfall collected during 6 months and water from a stream in the Vinča nuclear research center collected over 3 months. The obtained results using these three methods showed satisfying agreement. The appropriate measuring time by LSC for each sample prepared according to different methods has been determined.
Enhanced activities of organically bound tritium in biota samples

Abstract:A pilot study aimed on possible occurrence of elevated activity of non-exchangable organically bound tritium (NE-OBT) in biota was performed. The first results showed a significant surplus of NE-OBT activity in biota of the valley of Mohelno reservoir and Jihlava river. The liquid releases of HTO from the nuclear power plant Dukovany is the source of tritium in this area. This area can be a source of various types of natural samples for future studies of tritium pathways.

Abstract:As a special and dominant radionuclide released from the nuclear industry, tritium is a "superstar" radionuclide receiving significant concerns from the scientific community, regulators and even the public. This characteristic gradually becomes more and more prominent along with the rapid development of fusion energy research in particular and operations of fission nuclear reactors as well. Various aspects of tritium studies including, but not limited to, the tritium resource, fusion tritium technology (such as extraction, separation and fueling), tritium management and discharge, tritium environmental behavior, radiation dose and health effects have been and are being conducted. The objectives of this study are as follows: (1) to detail the tritium production, inventory and discharge of nuclear facilities from the perspectives of both practices and regulatory requirements, (2) to illustrate tritium environmental behavior & modeling in both the terrestrial and aquatic systems, in which an airwater transfer behavior (deposition and evaporation) was specifically explained, (3) to identify and discuss the radiation dose to a person under normal and accidental tritium discharges, (4) to review the health effects and risks in relation to tritium exposure. The main contribution is to comprehensively recognize the anthropogenic tritium from its generation to the possible damage to human health. It is expected to be instrumental for the beginners in the related fields and attract more scholars' attention to the tritium safety issue when performing directly or related studies so as to ensure the safe operation of nuclear systems, in particular the future fusion energy system.
Generation and Distribution of Tritium in HTGRs and Review on the Tritiated Water Treatment Technologies

Abstract:Tritium (H-3) can discharge mainly in the form of HT and/or HTO as gaseous and/or liquid waste into the environment from the nuclear power plant, and participate in the cycle among hydrosphere, atmosphere and biosphere, which would lead to the long-term radiological effects on organisms. Thus, in the daily operation of the nuclear power station, tritium became one of the most concerned nuclides in the source term analysis. In high temperature gas-cooled reactors (HTGRs), tritium was mainly generated by the ternary fission reaction of heavy nuclei in the fuel and neutron activation reaction of impurities like lithium-6 (Li-6), lithium-7 (Li-7) and boron-10 (B-10) in the graphite matrix, carbon bricks, etc. Tritium would be resorted completely in the intact tristructural-isotropic (TRISO) coated particles, while tritium in the graphite can diffuse into the primary loop depending on the local temperature. In the helium purification system of a typical HTGR, the molecular adsorber can adsorb the tritium in the primary coolant, and then the tritiated water was formed from the regeneration and desorption process of the molecular adsorber. Meanwhile, since the high permeability of tritium at a high temperature, it can permeate into the secondary loop through stainless steel heat exchange tube from the primary loop, and entered into the environment with leakage of the secondary water. Therefore, it was very important to analyze the production, transport and release mechanism of tritium for the estimation of the inventory and distribution of tritium in a nuclear power plant. With the rapid development of nuclear energy and the commercial application of HTGRs, tritiated water treatment technologies attracted more attention in the field of radioactive nuclear waste. Current paper will introduce and summarize general tritiated water treatment technologies, including water distillation, tritium sorbent process, palladium membrane reaction (PMR), and combined electrolysis catalytic exchange (CECE).

Abstract:Radioactive waste storage facilities (RWSF) are a potential source of tritium in the biosphere. Engineered concrete constructions are not sufficiently reliable forasmuch as water leaks contaminated with tritium from the storage facilities into the geological environment has been detected. The barrier properties of the natural environment at the storage sites are determined by the ability to absorb and retain heavy isotopes of hydrogen during a considerable period of time and thus exclude its circulation in the biosphere. Various elements of the natural ecosystem take part in the absorption of tritium – the geological environment, soil organic matter, annual and perennial vegetation, micro- and macrobiota. A certain part of tritium in the gaseous and aerosol form is released into the air. The highest concentrations of tritium are recorded in the area close to the concrete radioactive waste (RW) storage facilities, where the vapor-gas emanation plume is least dispersed. With distance from the storage facilities, the tritium concentration in the soil humus layer significantly decreases due to the spatial dispersion of the tritium in the atmospheric plume. Tritium from the air enters the soil with the atmospheric precipitation and is partially retained in the humified layer of the soil. Most of the tritium from the atmospheric precipitation is transported by the vertical infiltration flow through the sedimentary layers represented by loess sandy loams and loams, where it is finally retained. In the area close to RWSFs, the concentration of heavy hydrogen isotope in pore, interstitial and film water (1 fraction) is up to 87 % of its total content in an elementary block. In the more tightly bound forms (2 and 3 fractions), it is 9 % and 4 %, respectively. Farther from the RW storage facilities in the predominant air flow direction, the tritium concentration in free water decreases to 75 %. In this area, more intensive redistribution of tritium between the structural sites is observed. At the more distant monitoring points (wells), from 25 % to 37 % of the total tritium amount in the soils is retained in more tightly bound forms in the structure of rock-forming, mainly clay minerals
Tritium Content Determination in Titanium Tritide Targets from Romanian Decommissioned Nuclear Facilities

Abstract:The decommissioning or refurbishing processes of nuclear facilities result in significant amounts of radioactive wastes. Radiological characterization is essential to ensure safe handling, transportation, and disposal of these wastes and includes the assessment of the radioactivity levels and types of radioactive materials present in the wastes. The present paper presents the tritium activity determination in used titanium tritide targets from different decommissioned nuclear facilities from Măgurele Area – Romania. The determination of tritium content in tritiated targets involves the use of the Total Combustion technique coupled with Liquid Scintillation Counting analysis of the resulting tritiated water. The tritiated testosterone controlled contaminated titanium powder was used to determine the overall yield of the Total Combustion facility. The determined yields were then used to correct the experimental values obtained during the process.

Abstract:Tritium (H-3) is one of the most notable radioactive nuclides in nuclear facilities due to its typical production and diffusion mechanism. Its influence on the environmental safety and public dose attracts more and more attention from various research fields worldwide. This paper investigates the production mechanisms of tritium in different types of nuclear facilities. The sources and proportions of tritium in light water reactors (LWRs), heavy water reactors (HWRs), high temperature gas-cooled reactors (HTGRs), and liquid metal fast breeder reactors (LMFBRs) are investigated and comprehensively compared. The discharge standards of the liquid and gaseous effluent on tritium among different countries are also presented, which may provide suggestions on the tritium treatment and disposal in future. Due to the small modular weight, the permeation and diffusion of tritium to the secondary circuit and the storage and disposal of H-3 liquid are worthy issues, which are investigated in current paper. The existing problems of tritium during cogeneration process of electricity and hydrogen are discussed as well.

Abstract:Tritium is a byproduct of many radiochemical reactions in the nuclear industry, and its effects on aquatic organisms, particularly low-dose effects, deserve special attention. The low-dose effects of tritium on aquatic microbiota have been intensively studied using luminous marine bacteria as model microorganisms. Low-dose physiological activation has been demonstrated and explained by the signaling role of reactive oxygen species through the “bystander effect” in bacterial suspensions. The activation of microbial functions in natural reservoirs by low tritium concentrations can cause unpredictable changes in food chains and imbalances in the natural equilibrium. The incorporation of tritium from the free form into organically bound compounds mainly occurs in the dark and at a temperature of 25 °C. When tritium is ingested by marine animals, up to 56% of tritium is accumulated in the muscle tissue and up to 36% in the liver. About 50% of tritium in the liver is bound in non-exchangeable forms. Human ingestion of water and food products contaminated with background levels of tritium does not significantly contribute to the total dose load on the human body.

Abstract:In the decommissioning of nuclear facilities, it is necessary to assess the radioactivity inventory for waste classification and management. For nuclear fusion experiments or accelerator-driven neutron sources, the main contribution to the radiological inventory comes from activation products and tritium. When water is used as coolant of components, it may be activated by neutrons with the consequent production of tritium, and short-lived oxygen and nitrogen isotopes. In most cases several chemical elements may be in solution or suspension in water, because of metallic pipes corrosion when occurring, or functional reasons, e.g. chemical conditioning, addition of antifreeze agent, etc. In this case other activation products could be present and need to be characterized. In this case study, a sample of the coolant of the ENEA Frascati Neutron Generator (FNG) has been radiologically, chemically and physically characterized. In such a facility, during the operation, a beam of deuterons is accelerated up to 300 keV and impacts on a tritiated target for producing 14 MeV neutrons exploiting the fusion reaction T(d,n)α. To avoid overheating in the area around the target, a water-cooling loop is used. After several years of operation, a sample of the fluid has been extracted to undergo a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the radionuclides inventory. Gamma spectrometry has not shown any presence of gamma emitters. On the other hand, Liquid Scintillation Counting (LSC) has provided evidence of the presence of beta emitters. It is known that tritium is expected to occur in the sample because of releases from the tritiated titanium target. This work concerns the development of a method to discriminate the tritium contribution with respect to the total beta activity within the FNG coolant. Since it is known that an unspecified percentage of an unknown anticorrosive agent was added to the water coolant, vacuum distillation has been used to extract purified water (containing only tritium) from the coolant sample leaving any (activated) non-volatile compound in the undistilled fraction. After distillation, any fraction has been investigated by Raman spectroscopy, to determine: a) the chemical composition of the colored anticorrosive agent, b) the efficiency of the separation. Afterwards, both fractions have been analysed by means of LSC, and results showed that the main contribution to sample activity is due to tritium and the activity values are consistent with the theoretical H atomic concentration in both fractions.
Tritium as tracer of groundwater pollution extension: case study of Andralanitra landfill site, Antananarivo–Madagascar

Abstract:This study aims to understand the extension of groundwater pollution downstream of a landfill, Andralanitra–Antananarivo–Madagascar. Twenty-one samples, composed of dug well waters, spring waters, river, and lake, were measured in stable isotopes (δ2H, δ18O) and tritium. Results showed that only two dug well waters, collected at the immediate vicinity of the landfill, have high tritium activities (22.82 TU and 10.43 TU), probably of artificial origin. Both upstream and further downstream of the landfill, tritium activities represent natural source, with values varying from 0.17 TU to 1.46 TU upstream and from 0.88 TU to 1.88 TU further downstream. Stable isotope data suggest that recharge occurs through infiltration of slightly evaporated rainfall. Using the radioactive decay equation, the calculated tracer ages related to two recent ground water samples collected down gradient of the landfill lay between [8–15] years and [4–7] years, taking into account the uncertainty of tritium measurements. For the calculation, a value of 2.36 TU was taken as Ao. The latter was estimated based on similarity between stable isotope compositions of nearby spring and dug well waters as well as tritium activities of the local precipitation. Calculation of the tritium activities from the contaminated water point having 22.82 TU to further downstream using the calculated tracer ages showed values of one order of magnitude higher than the measured values. The absence of hydrological connection from the contaminated water point to further downstream the landfill would explain the lower tritium activities measured. Groundwater pollution seems to be limited to the closest proximity of the landfill.

Concentration of 3H in ground water and estimation of committed effective dose due to ground water ingestion in some places in the Maharashtra state, India

Abstract:The measurement of tritium in environmental samples requires highest possible sensitivity. In the present study, the authors have optimised the counting window for the analysis of (3)H in environmental samples using the recently installed Ultra Low Level Quantulus 1220 Liquid Scintillation Counting at BARC to improve the detection limit of the system. The optimised counting window corresponding to the highest figure of merit of 883.8 was found to be 20-162 channels. Different brands of packaged drinking waters were analysed to select a blank that would define the system background. The minimum detectable activity (MDA) achieved was 1.5 Bq l(-1) for a total counting time of 500 min. The concentration of tritium in well and bore well water samples collected from the villages of Pune, villages located at 1.8 km from Tarapur Atomic Power Station, Kolhapur and Ratnagiri, was analysed. The activity concentration ranged from 0.55 to 3.66 Bq l(-1). The associated age-dependant dose from water ingestion in the study area was estimated. The effective committed dose recorded for different age classes is negligible compared with World Health Organization and US Environmental Protection Agency dose guidelines.

Abstract:Environmental tracers, such as tritium, have generally been used to estimate aquifer recharge under natural conditions. A tritium tracer test is presented for estimating recharge under semi‐arid and irrigated conditions. The test was performed along 429 days (June 2007–August 2008) on an experimental plot located in SE Spain with drip irrigation and annual row crops (rotation of lettuce and melon), in which common agricultural practices were followed in open air. Tritiated water was sprinkled (simulated rainfall) over the plot, soil cores were taken at different depths and a liquid scintillation analyzer was used to measure tritium concentration in soil water samples. Tritium transport, as liquid or vapor phase, was simulated with the one‐dimensional numerical code SOLVEG. Simulations show that the crop water use was below potential levels, despite regular irrigation. Continuous high water content in soil promoted a great impact of rainfall events on the aquifer recharge. The results obtained from tritium tracer test have been compared with other independent recharge assessment, soil water balance method, to evaluate the reliability of the first one. Total recharge from tracer test was 476 mm for the October 2007–September 2008 period versus 561 mm from soil water balance method for the same period, which represents 37.1% and 43.7% of the applied water (1284 mm, irrigation + precipitation), respectively. Abstract:Immersion, percolation and tritium release experiments in peat and vermiculite soil samples were performed to analyze their behavior in this widely used medium for plant cultivation. Samples were immersed in tritiated water for 696 h and the isotope exchange capacity evaluated. A vertical flow regime was also considered with analysis for hydraulic conductivity to understand tritium mobility and therefore its availability. Peat soil showed a high tritium retention after percolation, but vermiculite seem to suppress its retention ability. The high moisture and organic content of peat enhanced its isotope exchange capacity. The falling head method was used to numerically evaluate the saturated hydraulic conductivity and outflow flux. Calculated isotope exchange capacity was 4.95×10-2 mol-T2O/g for peat and 3.38×10-2 mol-T2O/g for vermiculite. The tritium release experiment showed significant release of tritiated carbons in peat.
