Abstract:Shanghai is one of the most developed cities in China. Its modernity, legend, and unique cultural environment attract tourists from all over the world. This study examined the perceptions of local residents in Shanghai of tourism development, their quality of life and relationships, and the differences in residents’ profiles according to the clusters formed by tourism. Interestingly, Shanghai residents have positive perceptions of tourism impacts. Tourism development has a positive influence on quality of life. Three clusters of tourism impacts include different socio-demographic characteristics. In sum, when benefits from tourism development are shared by residents, the residents’ support for tourism development is strengthened and trust in the local government is reinforced.
Emerging Research Trends on Residents’ Quality of Life in the Context of Tourism Development

Abstract:Through a systematic review of recent publications on residents’ quality of life (QOL) in relation to tourism development (TD), this study surveys associated dynamics and emerging trends. Several patterns are observed: i) geographic areas of interest have expanded from developed economies to developing economies; ii) an array of theories and concepts have been introduced or merged with classic frameworks; iii) subjective composite approaches have dominated residents’ QOL measurement; and iv) the direct and indirect influences of TD on residents’ QOL constitute a main focus of recent work. Future work can take several directions: i) establishing a conceptual framework to link tourists’ and residents’ perspectives on QOL; ii) combining subjective and objective scales to improve generalizability; iii) employing longitudinal designs with innovative methods to offer insight into the dynamics of the TD–QOL nexus; and iv) investigating QOL/well-being from the eudaimonic tradition to accommodate diversified elements and broader perspectives of QOL.

Abstract:This study examined the formation of residents' support for sustainable tourism development based on the social exchange theory and bottom-up spillover theory. A self-administered survey along with a structural analysis was used. Our result revealed that overall quality of life satisfaction influenced support for sustainable tourism development, and that material life domains and non-material life domains were two important determinants of overall QoL. Perceived sociocultural impacts of tourism had a significant relationship with non-material life domains. Perceived economic impacts of tourism influenced both material and non-material life domains. Community attachment and residents' perceived impacts of tourism were significantly associated.

Abstract:Urban tourism has been instrumental in the global economic revival, particularly following the easing of COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. However, tourism is not neutral with respect to local quality of life, and little attention is given to the specific barriers that tourism presents to urban livability. This study aims to fill this research gap by identifying the most significant barriers to livability in tourist cities using livability satisfaction as the measure of urban livability. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Guilin, China, two international tourist cities with different contexts, were used as the study areas. This study used a questionnaire survey with a combination of probability sampling and quota sampling to obtain valid data from 793 respondents, including tourists and locals, of whom 395 were from Kuala Lumpur and 398 were from Guilin. The collected data were analyzed using a dual-stage PLS-SEM–ANN approach. The results indicated that economic burden, government, tourism ecology, infrastructure, and environmental quality barriers significantly influence livability satisfaction, with economic burden and tourist ecology barriers emerging as paramount concerns in both cities. Important differences between the two cities were also observed. Kuala Lumpur is more strongly impacted by environmental quality barriers, while infrastructure barriers more severely impact Guilin. The findings revealed that government leadership, equitable distribution of tourism benefits, and context-sensitive policy adjustment procedures are critical to balancing tourism development with the enhancement of urban livability. This study contributes to the urban livability and tourism literature through empirical quantification of livability barriers within urban tourism contexts. The study findings provide certain implications for stakeholders involved in the development and maintenance of tourist cities.

Abstract:Given the rapidly increasing number of foreign nationals migrating to Korea, this study investigates the relationship between cultural adaptation, tourist satisfaction, and quality of life among Chinese immigrants in Korea. A questionnaire survey was conducted among 344 Chinese immigrants in Korea who visited Gyeongju, where Korean World Heritage sites and modern tourist facilities coexist. A structural equation model was used to verify the hypothesis and indicated that cultural assimilation and cultural separation had a significant effect on tourist satisfaction, whereas cultural integration and cultural change did not have any statistically significant effect on tourist satisfaction. Additionally, tourist satisfaction had a significant effect on quality of life (in terms of subjective well-being and psychological well-being). The results of this study can function as a reference for improving Chinese immigrants’ cultural adaptation, tourist satisfaction, and quality of life.

Abstract:To date, tourism research has primarily explored resident perception and attitude in terms of tourism impact and development. Comparatively, resident perception of tourists themselves has attracted less attention from tourism researchers despite the fact host communities see the benefits of tourism through positive relationships with tourists. Moreover, studies on the resident-tourist relationship have largely been interested in the perspective of tourists, considering tourists as customers who bring economic benefits to a destination, while seeing residents as beneficiaries of the tourists' expenditures during their trip. The skewed approach has amplified the incomplete understanding of the resident-tourist relationship, disregarding the importance of reciprocity and the merchandized purpose of the exchanges in this relationship. As a starting point to study the residents' perspectives toward the resident-tourist relationship, this study explored and operated the concept of tourist attractiveness through a mixed-methods approach using a case study of Jeju Island, South Korea. As a result, this study found that tourist attractiveness can be measured using five sub-dimensions: tourist compatibility, tourist financial capacity, tourist responsibility, positive tourist influence, and negative tourist influence.

Abstract:The growth of tourism has an impact on the lives of locals in the area. Using theories of emotional solidarity, bottom-up spillover theory, and social exchange theory, a unified approach for examining the links between emotional solidarity, tourism-related stress, local inhabitants' quality of life, and support for sustainable tourism development in a tourism setting was established and confirmed in the present research. The welcoming nature of local citizens was revealed to have a considerable detrimental impact on their tourism-related stress. The study's findings supported a positive and significant impact of residents' emotional closeness on their quality of life. Furthermore, the results demonstrated that local inhabitants' quality of life had a considerable beneficial impact on their support for sustainable tourism development. Overall, the integrated study model accounted for 27.25 percent of the variation in support for sustainable tourism development. The study's theoretical and practical implications are extensively debated. The study's findings are based on 397 samples of data.

Abstract:This study examined the differences in the perceptions of safety in tourism activities of the socially disadvantaged and the effects of tourism activities on their life satisfaction to have a reflective discussion on tourism as the experience of cultural content for the socially disadvantaged’s pursuit of authenticity. The socially disadvantaged questioned were categorized specifically into disabled people, multicultural citizens, pregnant women, and women raising infants and young children. The study analyzed the perceptions of the general public and the socially disadvantaged on the physical environment for tourism activities and safety from deviance and crime, and the effects of the socially disadvantaged’s involvement in tourism activities on their life satisfaction, including the perceptions of safety in the environment of a tourism destination. The analysis showed differences between groups in the perceptions of safety in the physical environment for tourism activities and safety from deviance and crime. For the socially disadvantaged who had no domestic travel experience recently, the more they perceived to be at risk from deviance and crime at a tourist destination, the more their life satisfaction decreased. The results are expected to be used as basic data for support policies for the socially disadvantaged that enable tourism activities, which are the epitome of experiencing cultural content in pursuit of authenticity.

Abstract:This study examines the causal relationship between tourist expectations, tourist motivations, tour quality, tourist satisfaction, tourist complaints and tourist loyalty of Chinese tourists in the Republic of Korea using path analysis. It was found that tourist expectations have a negative effect on the perceived experiential quality of the tour, yet tourist motivation has a positive effect on the perceived tour quality. In turn, the perceived tour quality has a positive effect on tourist satisfaction. Similarly there is an inverse relationship between satisfaction and tourist complaints, and a positive relationship exists between satisfaction and loyalty. Equally, the higher is the number of complaints, the lower are the loyalty levels. These results will provide potential guidelines for inbound tour agents who plan to attract Chinese tourists to Korea and enable them to formulate appropriate strategies. This study also seeks to contribute to conceptual and policy formation by understanding the determinants of tourist satisfaction and loyalty.

Abstract:Abstract City tourism is one of the fastest growing industries worldwide. City tourism based on the attractiveness of the city is an important policy objective to secure competitiveness and sustainability of the city. However, as a city attracts more tourists, this uniqueness tends to decrease with the introduction of global corporate franchises as well as the construction of standardised buildings. Policymakers focus more on building hotels and shopping centres than on enhancing the cityscape. Therefore, this article aims to analyse the effect of cityscapes on tourist satisfaction. It encourages policymakers to bear in mind what really matters in fostering tourist satisfaction. During this research, about 250 foreign tourists visiting Seoul were given questionnaires to complete. Ordered logistic regression was used to analyse the data collected. The results demonstrated that among several elements that affected tourist satisfaction, such as shopping, security, and public transportation services, the cityscape had the greatest influence. This fact shows that urban competitiveness and sustainable city tourism are more important than the construction of new buildings or infrastructure in the short term. In the future, policymakers should seek to strengthen the city’s competitiveness from a longer-term perspective for its sustainable economic revitalisation.

Abstract:Tourism is becoming a viable and important economic development strategy in the regeneration of historic districts. Nonetheless, tourism may bring negative impacts to the local communities. As a result, local residents′ perceptions and attitudes toward tourism development are critical to the sustainable development of tourism. This study follows a qualitative research approach, attempting to examine the relationship between local residents′ social-demographic features and their perceptions of tourism development. The framework is applied to the case of Nanluoguxiang in Beijing, China, which is a typical tourism destination benefitting from its traditional urban forms. Data from 24 in-depth interviewees are analyzed using word-frequency analysis through text encoding. The results reveal that the cultural perception of the residents promoted place attachment, which was associated with impact perception, and together, they determined behavioral demand. The stronger the cultural perception of the residents is and the stronger their place attachment is, the more the negative impact of tourism is perceived and the stronger their demand for cultural protection is. Long-term residents, those with occupations unrelated to tourism, and those who live adjacent to the tourism attractions perceived more negative impacts.

Abstract:The influx of international tourists may affect the economic growth of destination countries by influencing the quality of life (QoL) of residents, the effects of which are unclear ex ante. Therefore, this study utilises the autoregressive distributed lag model to examine tourism‐induced growth by taking into consideration the residents' QoL using Singapore as a case study. We also consider the factor of heterogeneous tourism demand by regions of origin in a market‐based analysis using seemingly unrelated regression, motivated by the assumption that consumers from different markets differ widely over their preferences. This study seeks to contribute to an understanding of tourism as a source of sustainable economic development and as such provides important policy implications for practitioners and scholars alike.

Parasocial Interactions in Digital Tourism: Attributes of Live Streamers and Viewer Engagement Dynamics in South Korea

Abstract:This study investigates the use of live streaming as a strategic tool in the tourism industry, with a focus on the attributes of live streamers that influence viewer engagement, particularly in the context of South Korea's digital landscape. The purpose of this research is to understand how the attractiveness, trustworthiness, and expertise of live streamers can affect the parasocial relationships-characterized by perceived friendship and trust-between viewers and streamers and how these relationships subsequently influence viewer loyalty and cooperation intentions. A quantitative research methodology was employed, utilizing a structured online survey distributed by a leading market research agency in South Korea. The survey targeted a diverse demographic to ensure a comprehensive analysis of digital consumer behavior in the tourism sector. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics 28.0 and IBM SPSS Amos 28.0, employing structural equation modeling to test the hypothesized relationships. The results revealed that while attractiveness and trustworthiness impact perceived friendship, only expertise significantly affects trust for a travel live streamer. Furthermore, perceived friendship plays a crucial role in fostering loyalty to and cooperation with the streamer, having practical implications for the tourism industry in terms of crafting marketing strategies and training digital ambassadors. Th study extends parasocial interaction theory to the digital travel domain, providing original insights into virtual tourist behavior and highlighting live streaming's significant contribution to viewer engagement. This research has limitations in its geographical focus on South Korea, suggesting the need for cross-cultural studies to validate the findings. Overall, this study offers valuable contributions to the academic literature and practical guidance for the tourism industry, emphasizing the importance of digital personalities in post-pandemic tourism recovery strategies.

Abstract:Residents' overall well-being and quality-of-life require a deeper understanding of their perceived social impacts of tourism to determine appropriate management strategies to promote behaviours in support of tourism development. Aligning with the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development, this paper proposes a new framework for residents' quality-of-life. Bringing together multi-disciplinary evidence from environmental, social and cognitive psychology, political science and tourism, this study critically examines how residents' perceived social impacts of tourism and their interpersonal trust can make them become more place attached and protect their tourism resources. The framework proposes that residents' perceived social impacts of tourism exerts a direct influence on residents' interpersonal trust. It further posits that residents' perceived social impacts of tourism and their interpersonal trust exert a direct influence on residents' place attachment. The proposed model further considers place attachment to exert a direct influence on residents' pro-social and pro-environmental behavioural intentions. Pro-social behaviour is proposed to influence pro-environmental behaviour. Further pro-social and pro-environmental behaviours are proposed to influence residents' support for tourism development. The framework then considers residents' support for tourism development to exert a direct influence on residents' overall quality-of-life. The theoretical contributions, practical implications for sustainable community tourism and sustainable tourism in general and the limitations of the study are discussed.

Abstract:Purpose With the recent challenges brought about by COVID-19, many individuals are turning their focus inward, seeking personal happiness. This shift has also influenced tourism trends, where travel experiences are now more about catering to individual preferences and facilitating shared experiences with like-minded travelers, addressing the inherent need for connection and communication. This evolving dynamic has spotlighted the role of social media quality as a pivotal marketing tool in the tourism industry. In this context, this research sought to explore the causal relationship between the quality of social media and the positive emotions, as well as the behavioral intentions of tourists. Methods In order to achieve the proposal of this study, the survey result of 260 questionnaires collected from tourists who watched a YouTube channel managed by the city of Gwangju. In addition, this study had been distributed over a three week period beginning from July 30th to July 10th, 2023. Results The analysis results are as follows. First, among the factors of social media quality that service quality and emotional quality were positively related to positive emotion. Second, it was established that positive emotion obtained a positive relation behavioral intention.Third, positive emotions were found to have a unique positive mediating effect on the social media quality between behavioral intention. Conclusion The findings of this analysis highlight the importance of effectively managing the quality of social media content. It underscores the value of fostering positive user emotions and intentions, suggesting a proactive approach is essential.

Abstract:This study argues that when overall tourism impacts are positive, residents’ quality of life (QOL) increases, thereby positively affecting their attitudes towards tourism initiatives. The study also identifies several other important relationships that have been ignored in the literature. First, QOL may be a crucial push factor for community commitment, which in turn can trigger support for additional tourism development. Second, communication with tourists may moderate the links between QOL, community commitment, and tourism support. Data were collected from 468 residents living in Manavgat, Turkey and analyzed using structural equation modeling and Hayes’s PROCESS macro. The findings show that as the perception of the positive effects of tourism increases, opinions about the QOL will also be optimistic. Importantly, QOL strengthens both tourism support and community commitment. Additionally, community commitment mediates the link between QOL and attitudes towards tourism development. Finally, community commitment increases support for tourism, which is stronger for residents who communicate more with tourists.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore structural relationships between quality, destination image, perceived value, tourist satisfaction and destination loyalty with emphasis on the mediating effect of tourist satisfaction on relations between destination image and destination loyalty, and between perceived value and destination loyalty in the context of small-scale sporting events. Design/methodology/approach Construct validity of the measurement scale was verified by confirmatory factor analysis, factor loadings, average variance extracted, construct reliability and correlation analysis. Reliability of the measurement scale was verified by Cronbach’s α analysis. A structural equation modeling test with maximum likelihood estimation was used to test structural relationships between variables in the proposed model using the responses of 311 participants. Findings Results showed significant and powerful impacts of: event quality, destination image and perceived value on tourist satisfaction; destination image, perceived value, and tourist satisfaction on destination loyalty and demonstrated; and tourist satisfaction fully mediates relationships between destination image and destination loyalty, and between perceived value and destination loyalty. Originality/value The study shows: it is meaningful to include quality and value in tourism destination image-satisfaction-loyalty models; provides empirical evidence that tourist satisfaction fully mediates the relation between perceived value and destination loyalty; and confirms small-scale as well as large-scale sporting events should be viewed as important aspects of marketing strategies aimed at improving quality, image, value, satisfaction and loyalty.
