Abstract:The nature of the electronic interface between a nanotube and solvated ions in a liquid electrolyte is governed by two distinct physical phenomena: quantum and chemical. The quantum component arises from the sharply varying electronic density of states and the chemical component arises from ion screening and diffusion. Here, using an integrated on-chip shield technology, we measure the capacitance of one to a few nanotubes quantitatively as a function of both bias potential (from −0.7 V to 0.3 V) and ionic concentration (from 10 mM to 1 M KCl) at room temperature. We determine the relative contributions of the quantum and electrochemical capacitance, and confirm the measurements with theoretical models. This represents an important measurement of the quantum effects on capacitance in reduced dimensional systems in contact with liquid electrolytes, an important and emerging theme in the interface between nanotechnology, energy, and life.

Single Carbon Fiber/Acid-Treated CNT-Epoxy Composites by Electro- Micromechanical Technique and Wettability Test for Dispersion and Self-Sensing

Abstract:Dispersion and self-sensing evaluation for single-carbon fiber reinforced in three different acid-treated CNT-epoxy nanocomposites were investigated by electro-micromechanical techniques and wettability tests. Self-sensing based on contact resistivity exhibited more noise for single carbon fi- ber/acid-treated CNT-epoxy composites than it did for untreated CNT. However, the apparent modulus was higher the acid treated case than the untreated case which is attributed to better stress transfer. The interfacial shear strength (IFSS) between carbon fibers and the CNT-epoxy was lower than that between carbon fiber and neat epoxy due to the increased viscosity associated with the addition of the CNT. The CNT-epoxy nanocomposite exhibited more hydrophobicity than did neat epoxy. Change in the thermody- namic work of adhesion was consistent with changes in the IFSS but disproportional to that of the appa- rent modulus. The optimum condition of acid treatment on the need can be obtained instead of the max- imum condition.
Electrochemical Capacitances of Well-Defined Carbon Surfaces.

Abstract:Reported is the capacitive behavior of homogeneous and well-defined surfaces of pristine carbon nanofibers (CNFs) and surface-modified CNFs. The capacitances of the well-defined CNFs were measured with cyclic voltammetry to correlate the surface structure with capacitance. Among the studied pristine CNFs, the edge surfaces of platelet CNFs (PCNF) and herringbone CNFs were more effective in capacitive charging than the basal plane surface of tubular CNF by a factor of 3-5. Graphitization of PCNF (GPCNF) changed the edge surface of PCNF into a domelike basal plane surface, and the corresponding capacitances decreased from 12.5 to 3.2 F/g. A chemical oxidation of the GPCNF, however, recovered a clear edge surface by removal of the curved basal planes to increase the capacitance to 5.6 F/g. The difference in the contribution of the edge surface and basal-plane surface to the capacitance of CNF was discussed in terms of the anisotropic conductivity of graphitic materials.

Abstract:The fundamental mechanism of electrosorption of ions developing a double layer inside nanopores was studied via a combination of experimental and theoretical studies. A novel graphitized-carbon monolithic material has proven to be a good electrical double-layer capacitor that can be applied in the separation of ions from aqueous solutions. An extended electrical double-layer model indicated that the pore size distribution plays a key role in determining the double-layer capacitance in an electrosorption process. Because of the occurrence of double-layer overlapping in narrow pores, mesopores and micropores make significantly different contributions to the double-layer capacitance. Mesopores show good electrochemical accessibility. Micropores present a slow mass transfer of ions and a considerable loss of double-layer capacitance, associated with a shallow potential distribution inside pores. The formation of the diffuse layer inside the micropores determines the magnitude of the double-layer capacitance at low electrolyte concentrations and at conditions close to the point of zero charge of the material. The effect of the double-layer overlapping on the electrosorption capacitance can be reduced by increasing the pore size, electrolyte concentration, and applied potential. The results are relevant to water deionization.
Pore structure and electrochemical properties of CNT-based electrodes studied by in situ small/wide angle X-ray scattering

Abstract:Macroscopic ensembles of nanocarbons, such as fibres of carbon nanotubes (CNT), are characterised by a complex hierarchical structure combining coherent crystalline regions with a large porosity arising from imperfect packing of the large rigid building blocks. Such structure is at the centre of a wide range of charge storage and transfer processes when CNT fibres are used as electrodes and/or current collectors. This work introduces a method based on wide and small-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS/SAXS) to obtain structural descriptors of CNT fibres and which enables in situ characterisation during electrochemical processes. It enables accurate determination of parameters such as specific surface area, average pore size and average bundle size from SAXS data after correction for scattering from density fluctuations arising from imperfect packing of graphitic planes. In situ and ex situ WAXS/SAXS measurements during electrochemical swelling of CNT fibre electrodes in ionic liquid provide continuous monitoring of the increase in effective surface area caused by electrostatic separation of CNT bundles in remarkable agreement with capacitance changes measured independently. Relative contributions from quantum and Helmholtz capacitance to total capacitance remaining fairly constant. The WAXS/SAXS analysis is demonstrated for fibres of either multi- and single-walled CNTs, and is expected to be generally applicable to operando studies on nanocarbon-based electrodes used in batteries, actuators and other applications

Abstract:We report the growth of a nanospiked, carbon thin film electrode by an inexpensive, non-catalytic plasma enhanced CVD process on Si substrates. The electron transfer kinetics for various redox probes of these carbon nanospikes (CNS) were determined and compared with glassy carbon and CNS exposed to oxygen plasma or a high temperature ammonia soak. The results indicate that CNS can be used as a practical alternative to GC for various electroanalysis applications. These electrodes also exhibited activity and stability toward the oxygen reduction reaction, suggesting there potential use as electrocatalyst supports. How Carboxylic Groups Improve the Performance of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube Electrochemical Capacitors?

Abstract:Single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNTs) is a promising material candidate for fabricating high-performance electrodes in electrochemical capacitors. An intriguing question is what are the key material characteristics of SWCNTs that influence the performance of SWCNT-based capacitors? We grafted SWCNTs with different amounts of carboxylic groups by a surfactant free method. Their density was quantified using a fluorescence labeling method, ranging from 7.3 to 353.2 nmol m−2. SWCNTs were also characterized by scanning electron microscope, N2 physisorption, ultraviolet-visible-near-infrared absorption, Fourier transform infrared, Raman, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Functionalized SWCNTs show a minor increase in their microspores and mesopores volume, and the total surface area stays ∼322.8 m2 g−1. We correlated SWCNT physiochemical properties with the performance of assembled two-electrode SWCNT capacitors. The specific capacitance, power density and energy density increase with increasing carboxylic group density, reaching the maximum at 146.1 F g−1, 308.8 kW kg−1 and 13.0 Wh kg−1 at the density of ∼250–350 nmol m−2. Potentiostatic electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analysis reveals that introducing an appropriate concentration of carboxylic groups plays two key roles: (1) it decreases the surface resistivity of SWCNT films, thus significantly reducing the equivalent series resistances of capacitors and (2) it enhances the surface wettability of SWCNTs, which not only offers more accessible sites for the physisorption of free electrolyte ions on SWCNT surfaces, but also increases ionic conductivity at electrode–electrolyte interfaces. These results and analysis provide a fundamental understanding of the effect of functionalization on the performance of SWCNT-based electrochemical capacitors, and shed light on a pathway by which electrochemical capacitors can be further improved for practical applications.

Abstract:Graphitized carbon thin film electrodes are demonstrated as high‐performing substrates for correlative scanning electrochemical cell microscopy (SECCM). Three different types if nano‐entities are used to test performance, namely metal@C nanoparticles, carbon nanocubes, and 2D MXenes. Versatility is exemplified by correlative‐SECCM experiments that combine scanning probe, optical, electron, and X‐ray microscopies (SXM) in transmission and total electron yield modes. Correlative methods to characterize single entities by electrochemistry and microscopy/spectroscopy are increasingly needed to elucidate structure‐function relationships of nanomaterials. However, the technical constraints often differ depending on the characterization techniques to be applied in combination. One of the cornerstones of correlative single‐entity electrochemistry (SEE) is the substrate, which needs to achieve a high conductivity, low roughness, and electrochemical inertness. This work shows that graphitized sputtered carbon thin films constitute excellent electrodes for SEE while enabling characterization with scanning probe, optical, electron, and X‐ray microscopies. Three different correlative SEE experiments using nanoparticles, nanocubes, and 2D Ti3C2Tx MXene materials are reported to illustrate the potential of using carbon thin film substrates for SEE characterization. The advantages and unique capabilities of SEE correlative strategies are further demonstrated by showing that electrochemically oxidized Ti3C2Tx MXene display changes in chemical bonding and electrolyte ion distribution.

Abstract:Carbon nanoplates with diameters and thicknesses of up to approximately 1.2 mu m and 18 nm, respectively, were prepared by a reaction using CaC2, ferrocene, and NH4HCO3 as starting materials at 600 degrees C for 10 h. These carbon nanoplates form aggregates that have a specific surface area of up to 831 m(2) g(-1) and a specific capacitance of up to 184 F g(-1) at a scanning rate of 10 mV s(-1) in a 3 mol L-1 H2SO4 solution. Without using NH4HCO3, hexagonal carbon nanoplates with an average edge length of 500 nm and thickness of approximately 22 nm were obtained with a specific capacitance of up to 42 F g(-1). If NaN3 or NaHCO3 was used instead of NH4HCO3, carbon nanoplates with a curved surface or irregular circular carbon nanoplates were obtained with specific capacitances of 87 or 36 F g(-1), respectively.

The wettability of carbon nanofibers

Abstract:The surface chemical properties and wettability of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) synthesized by CVD were studied by wicking kinetic measurements. The influence of the microstructure, preparation conditions and the surface modification of the CNFs on their wettability in different solvents were investigated. Results indicated that the preparation conditions such as catalyst composition, and especially the carbon source, have an obvious effect on the surface properties and wettability of CNFs. CNFs from Fe/gamma- Al2O3 and C2H4 has the worst wettability in water, while CNFDs from Ni/gamma- Al2O3 and CO has the best wettability in cyclohexane. Measurement of contact angle in cyclohexane, acetone, ethanol and water showed that interaction between the CNF surface and the solvent changed significantly with the solvent used. The contact angles of CNFs from Fe/gamma- Al2O3 and CO in water, acetone and ethanol relative to that in cyclohexane ( in which the contact angle is arbitrarily set to 0 degrees), are 81. 6 degrees,45. 2 degrees,24. 8 degrees respectively. It is believed that a small polarity of the CNF surface leads to its higher wettability in a non-polar solvent such as cyclohexane than in polar solvent such as water. The nature of the CNF surface groups and the wettability of CNFs in different solvents could be tailored by different surface modifications. Treatment in concentrated nitric acid increased the CNF wettability both in water and in cyclohexane, while treatment in hydrogen peroxide decreased the CNF wettability in both solvents. Interestingly, thermal treatment in argon increased the CNF wettability in water, but decreased it in cyclohexane.

Abstract:Carbon nanotube sheet electrodes have been prepared from catalytically grown carbon nanotubes of high purity and narrow diameter distribution, centered around 80 Angstrom. Our study shows that the electrodes are free-standing mats of entangled nanotubes with an open porous structure almost impossible to obtain with activated carbon or carbon fiber. These properties are highly desirable for high power and long cycle life electrochemical capacitors. Specific capacitances of 102 and 49 F/g were measured at 1 and 100 Hz, respectively, on a single cell device with 38 wt% H2SO4 as the electrolyte. The same cell had a power density of > 8000 W/kg. Abstract:Chemical functionalization of nanocarbons is an important strategy to produce electrochemical systems with higher energy/power density by generating surface functional groups with additional faradaic contribution, by increasing their surface area and correspondent capacitive contribution and by improving compatibility with aqueous electrolytes and other active materials, such as pseudocapacitive metal-oxides. Here we present an electrochemical method to simultaneously swell and functionalize large electrodes consisting of fabrics of macroscopic fibers of carbon nanotubes that renders the material hydrophilic and produces a substantial increase of specific capacitance and energy density in aqueous electrolytes. Through in-depth characterization of the carbon nanotube fibres (CNTF) by Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectrocn spectroscopy (XPS) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) we identify various contributions to such improvements, including surface oxidation, tubular unzipping, debundling and inter-bundle swelling. Changes in hydrophilicity of functionalized CNTF are determined by analyzing the dynamics of spreading of polar and nonpolar liquids in the electrode. The extracted contact angles and polar and dispersive surface energy components for different treatment conditions are in agreement with changes in dipole-moment obtained by XPS. Finally, functionalized CNTF electrodes were employed in current collector-free solid flexible supercapacitors, which show enhanced electrochemical properties compared to as-produced hydrophobic ones.
Oxygenated Surface of Carbon Nanotube Sponges: Electroactivity and Magnetic Studies

Abstract:We report the synthesis of nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube sponges (N-CNSs) by pyrolysis of solutions of benzylamine, ferrocene, thiophene, and isopropanol-based mixture at 1020 °C for 4 h using an aerosol-assisted chemical vapor deposition system. The precursors were transported through a quartz tube using a dynamic flow of H2/Ar. We characterized the N-CNSs by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. We found that isopropanol, isopropanol-ethanol, and isopropanol-acetone as precursors promote the formation of complex-entangled carbon fibers making knots and junctions. The N-CNSs displayed an outstanding oxygen concentration reaching a value of 9.2% for those synthesized with only isopropanol. We identified oxygen and nitrogen functional groups; in particular, the carbon fibers produced using only isopropanol exhibited a high concentration of ether groups (C-O bonds). This fact suggests the presence of phenols, carboxyl, methoxy, ethoxy, epoxy, and more complex functional groups. Usually, the functionalization of graphitic materials is carried out through aggressive acid treatments; here, we offer an alternative route to produce a superoxygenated surface. The understanding of the chemical surface of these novel materials represents a huge challenge and offers an opportunity to study complex oxygen functional groups different from the conventional quinone, carboxyl, phenols, carbonyl, methoxy, ethoxy, among others. The cyclic voltammetry measurements confirmed the importance of oxygen in N-CNSs, showing that with high oxygen concentration, the highest anodic and cathodic currents are displayed. N-CNSs displayed ferromagnetic behavior with an outstanding saturation magnetization. We envisage that our sponges are promising for anodes in lithium-ion batteries and magnetic sensor devices.
Relation between double layer structure, capacitance and surface tension in electrowetting of graphene and aqueous electrolytes

Abstract:Deciphering the mechanisms of charge storage on carbon-based materials is pivotal for the development of next generation electrochemical energy storage systems. Graphene, the building block of graphitic electrodes, is an ideal model for probing such processes on a fundamental level. Herein, we investigate the thermodynamics of the graphene/aqueous electrolyte interface by utilizing a multiscale quantum mechanics – classical molecular dynamics (QM/MD) approach to provide insights into the effect of alkali metal ion (Li+) concentration on the interfacial tension (γSL) of the charged graphene/electrolyte interface. We demonstrate that the dependence of γSL on the applied surface charge exhibits an asymmetric behaviour relative to the neutral surface. At the positively charged graphene sheet, the electrowetting response is amplified by electrolyte concentration, resulting in a strongly hydrophilic surface. On the contrary, at negative potential bias, γSL shows a weaker response to the charging of the electrode. Changes in γSL greatly affect the total areal capacitance predicted by the Young-Lippmann equation but have negligible impact on the simulated total areal capacitance indicating that the EDL structure is not directly correlated with the wettability of the surface and different interfacial mechanisms drive the two phenomena. The proposed model is validated experimentally by studying the electrowetting response of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite over a wide range of electrolyte concentrations. Our work presents the first combined theoretical and experimental study on electrowetting using carbon surfaces, introducing new conceptual routes for the investigation of wetting phenomena under potential bias.

Abstract:Fundamental understanding of ion electroadsorption processes in porous electrodes on a molecular level provides important guidelines for next-generation energy storage devices like electric double layer capacitors (EDLCs). Porous carbons functionalized by heteroatoms show enhanced capacitive performance, but the underlying mechanism is still elusive, due to the lack of reliable tools to precisely identify multiple N species and establish clear structure property relations. Here, we use advanced analytical techniques such as low-temperature solid-state NMR (ssNMR) and electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) to relate the complex nitrogen functionalities to the charging mechanisms and capacitive performance. For the first time, it is demonstrated at a molecular level that N-doping strongly influences the electroadsorption mechanism in EDLCs. Without N-doping, anion (SO42-) adsorption-desorption dominates the charging mechanism, whereas after doping, Li+ electroadsorption plays a key role. With the help of EQCM, it is demonstrated that SO42- is strongly immobilized on the N-doped surface, leaving Li+ as the main charge carrier. The smaller size and higher concentration of Li+ compared to SO42- benefit a higher capacitance. Amine/amide N is responsible for high capacitance, but surprisingly the pyridinic, pyrrolic, and graphitic N groups have no significant influence. 2D 1H-15N NMR spectroscopy indicates that the conversion from pyridinium to pyrrolic N gives rise to a slightly decreased capacitance. This work not only demonstrates ssNMR as a powerful tool for surface chemistry characterization of electrode materials but also uncovers the related charging mechanism by EQCM, paving the way toward a comprehensive picture of EDLC chemistry.
