Abstract:Pure MoS 2 and Ni doped MoS 2 were prepared by mean of hydrothermal method. The microstructure, surface morphology and chemical composition were investigated by X-ray diffractometer, Raman spectroscopy, FE-SEM and XPS. The diffraction peak corresponding to (002) lattice plane shifts to smaller angle when Ni atoms incorporate into MoS 2 crystal lattice. Few layer MoS 2 nanosheets with perpendicularly oriented structure appeared when MoS 2 were doped with moderate Ni. The electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction of the pure MoS 2 and Ni-MoS 2 was investigated by LSV and EIS. The results indicated that the Ni-1.0-MoS 2 exhibits the best HER activities. The overpotentials at 10mA cm -2 and the charge transfer resistance ( R ct ) were 164 mV ( vs . RHE) and 89 Ω, respectively. The Ni-1.0-MoS 2 electrocatalysts also exhibited good stability, which was significantly for potential applications in the field of electrocatalysis.
Electrodeposition of crack-free and amorphous Ni-Mo alloys with high Mo content from gluconate baths

Abstract:In this article, electroplated Ni-Mo alloys with high Mo content from gluconate baths are presented. Specifically, the influence of current density on the electrodeposition process, which produced crack-free Ni-Mo alloys with high Mo content, was evaluated. Commonly, Ni-Mo electrodeposition is performed in citrate solutions, as citrate ions promote coordination compounds with greater stability compared to mono and bivalent ligands. However, due to the high internal stress caused by Mo in the coating when its content is very high, microcracks are formed along the surface, causing defects in the deposit. Gluconate baths have been proven to produce crack-free alloys, even when current density is high. The deposits were evaluated for chemical composition by Energy-Dispersive X-ray Specrometry (EDS) and surface morphology by electron microscopy using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Furthermore, the deposition process was evaluated for current efficiency, and a reaction mechanism was proposed based on observations acquired by other authors. The highest Mo content obtained was 43% by weight. The highest current efficiency was 26%, obtained at 30 mA/cm2.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline Ni-Mo alloy coatings with excellent brightness, high hardness, and corrosion resistance were prepared. Nanocrystalline Ni-Mo alloy coating with a Mo content of 14.94 at% was electrodeposited on the copper foil substrate under the optimized conditions with the current efficiency of 51.64%. The electrodeposition behavior of Ni-Mo alloy coatings was studied by cathodic polarization curve and chronopotentiometry. Chronopotentiometry showed that the nucleation rate of Ni-Mo alloys can be accelerated with the increase of current density. Meanwhile, the cathodic polarization curves show that the additives can effectively inhibit the electrodeposition of Ni-Mo alloys. The (2 0 0) and (2 2 0) diffraction peaks of Ni gradually disappeared and the grain size gradually decreased with the increase of Mo content in the alloy coating according to XRD and TEM analysis. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and confocal microscope observation results show that the coating becomes smoother and denser with the increase of Mo content when Mo content was lower than 14.94 at%, after which the density of the coating saw a decline due to the intensified hydrogen evolution reaction. The microhardness results of the alloy coating show that the microhardness of the alloy coating is related to the solid solution strengthening, texture evolution, and plastic deformation of the alloy. Meanwhile, the alloy coating has a Hall-Petch relationship and inverse Hall-Petch relationship, and the critical grain size is 5.5 nm. The corrosion resistance of Ni-Mo alloy coating is better than that of pure Ni coating, and the corrosion resistance is optimal when the Mo content is about 15 at%. In addition, in the plating solution containing additives, the deposited Ni-Mo alloy coating is smoother and denser, and the hardness and corrosion resistance of the alloy coating is also greatly improved.

Abstract:Binary Ni-Mo alloys were electrodeposited in citrate electrolytic solution at a pH of 9.5. EDS analysis determined the deposit composition and increase in the % wt of Mo with increased applied current density (c.d.). XRD analysis reveals deposits exhibit single Ni-Mo solid phase. SEM micrograph shows that the morphology is clearly altered when the Mo concentration increases. Corrosion behavior of nanocrystalline Ni-Mo alloys was carried out potentiodynamically and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in 0.5 M H2SO4. The corrosion resistance of the coatings was explained based on the structural interpretation of Ni-Mo alloys. The highest corrosion resistance accompanied by electrodeposits containing least wt% of Mo.

Abstract:Ni–Mo coatings on steel substrates made of complex self-regulating electrolytes were obtained by the electrodeposition method. The surface morphology and elemental composition of the obtained coatings were determined by the methods of electron microscopy and energy dispersive analysis. The maximum molybdenum content (25.26 mass%) was obtained at a deposition current density of 0.5 A/ dm 2 (pH 9.2, 300 rpm, 22±2°C). The thickness of such coatings is 15–20 μm. The microhardness of coatings increases with an increase in the molybdenum content. The proposed electrolyte is characterized by high stability and is technologically and environmentally friendly.

Abstract:The growing demand for hydrogen and the effectiveness of alkaline anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyzers has led to an increased interest in finding lower cost alternatives to traditional noble metal electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). High-entropy alloy (HEA) electrocatalysts have received significant attention due to their properties such as high configurational entropy and high lattice distortion which can help promote electrocatalytic reactions. In this work, an aqueously electrodeposited and structurally amorphous NiFeCoMoW HEA was synthesized and investigated for its HER performance. The importance of factors such as surface morphology, chemical composition, and microstructure on the electrochemical activity and stability was also explored. Increased electrochemical activity was observed in the HEA compared to electrodeposited binary alloys, owing to a larger number of active sites with differing electronic structures and adsorption energies. NiFeCoMoW HEAs electrodeposited at a pH of 5 exhibited the smallest Tafel slope of all the tested samples with an average Tafel slope of 83 mV/dec. Meanwhile, the lowest overpotential for 10 mA/cm(GA)(2) of 171 mV was observed in the samples prepared at pH 6, which possessed a higher roughness factor (RF). These results highlight the potential of using HEAs for electrocatalytic applications and demonstrate aqueous electrodeposition as a simple, inexpensive, and scalable synthesis method to produce effective HEA electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Developing non-precious, stable, and highly efficient electrocatalyst materials is crucial for large-scale practical Hydrogen evaluation reactions (HER) applications. Ni3S2 is a prominent catalyst due to its high efficiency and ease of preparation. Nevertheless, its usability is restricted by poor Ni site water molecule adsorption and strong hydrogen bonding between Sulphur and Hydrogen. The concentration of precursors and samples' morphology significantly affect the electrochemical performance of electrodes intended for HER application. This study examines how Mo transition metal sulfide concentration influences the Mo-Co-Ni3S2/NF catalyst's structural aspects and its subsequent electrochemical performance. In situ hydrothermal processing is used to prepare the samples through a two-step process. The samples exhibit enhanced electrocatalytic properties. Specifically, a comparatively low overpotential of 215 mV and 332 mV was observed at current densities of 10 mA cm-2 and 50 mA cm-2, respectively. Additionally, a Taffel slope of 104 mV-dec-1 was recorded at a 75:25% ratio of Molybdenum to Cobalt concentration. The samples also demonstrate excellent stability.

Abstract:This study aimed to deposit high entropy alloy coatings with five different elements, Ni, Co, Cu, Mo, and W, from a single aqueous bath. The influence of pH, current density, and complex agent on the composition of deposited coating was examined. It was shown that Mo and W were codeposited mainly with Ni and Co. pH had the most impact on the codeposition of reluctant elements like Mo and W, while current density had the minimum effect. The deposited coating had a metallic, dense, and nodular morphology with configurational entropy of around 1.6R.

Abstract:The alloying of Ni with other elements is a common strategy to improve the performance of Ni coatings. Among many Ni-based coatings, NiMo coatings are widely used in various fields due to their excellent hardness, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and electrocatalytic properties. Compared with other preparation techniques, the preparation of NiMo coatings by electrodeposition has the advantages of simplicity, moderate cost, and high efficiency. By selecting appropriate electrodeposition parameters, coatings with various properties can be obtained. In this review, the electrodeposition mechanism, electrodeposition parameters, and the properties of NiMo coatings are comprehensively discussed. The effects of electrodeposition parameters on the elemental content and current efficiency in NiMo coatings are also described in detail. Additionally, a summary is provided for the related content of heat treatment and energy field-assisted electrodeposition, emphasizing the potential applications of the latter in the preparation of NiMo composite coatings. This review summarizes and evaluates the previous related literature reports, aiming to guide the development of NiMo alloys and composite coatings with better performance.

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has attracted great attention for its unique chemical and physical properties. The applications of this transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) range from supercapacitors to dye-sensitized solar cells, Li-ion batteries and catalysis. This work opens new routes toward the use of electrodeposition as an easy, scalable and cost-effective technique to perform the coupling of Si with molybdenum disulfide. MoS2 deposits were obtained on n-Si (100) electrodes by electrochemical deposition protocols working at room temperature and pressure, as opposed to the traditional vacuum-based techniques. The samples were characterized by X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and Rutherford Back Scattering (RBS).

Abstract:Ni–Mo alloy coatings were deposited on a copper base material from a non-aqueous plating bath based on a deep eutectic solvent (DES) of choline chloride and propylene glycol in a 1:2 molar ratio containing 0.2 mol dm −3 NiCl 2 · 6H 2 O and 0.01 mol dm −3 (NH 4 ) 6 Mo 7 O 24 ·4H 2 O. Uniform and adherent Ni–Mo deposits with a nodular morphology were obtained at all the deposition potentials investigated (from − 0.5 to − 0.9 V vs. Ag). By shifting the potential from − 0.5 to − 0.9 V, the deposition current density increased from − 0.4 to − 1.5 mA cm −2 and the overall surface roughness increased. It was also accompanied by an increase in the Mo content from ~ 7 to ~ 13 wt% in the potential range from − 0.5 to − 0.7 V. A further change in the potential from − 0.8 to − 0.9 V caused a decrease in the Mo content to ~ 10 wt% and a deterioration in the quality of the coating. For the most uniform coating, deposited at − 0.6 V and having a thickness of ca. 660 nm, the crystallite size did not exceed 10 nm. With the content of Ni (89 at.%) and Mo (11 at.%), the selected area electron diffraction (SAED) analysis allowed us to identify the cubic phase Ni 3.64 Mo 0.36 . The corrosion resistance of Ni–Mo coatings in 0.05 mol dm −3 NaCl solution generally increased during exposure of 18 h, as evidenced by ever higher polarization resistance. Finally, regardless of the applied deposition potential, low corrosion currents (in the range of 0.1–0.3 μA cm −2 ) have been measured for the coatings. EIS revealed that charge transfer resistances were the highest (57–67 kΩ cm 2 ) for coatings deposited at − 0.5 V, − 0.6 V and − 0.7 V. Further increase in the deposition potential in the negative direction was unfavorable.

Abstract:This paper reports a systematic study on the electrodeposition of metallic molybdenum from water-in-salt electrolytes containing superhigh concentrations of acetate. Cyclic voltammetry and DC deposition were carried out on rotating disk electrodes with various concentrations of CH3COOK and CH3COONH4 to determine the effects of NH4+ and K+ on Mo deposition. A comparison was performed between CH3COOLi, CH3COONa, and CH3COOK to study the effects of different alkali metal cations. A synergistic effect was observed between K+ and NH4+, where Mo deposition rate is enhanced in the presence of both cations. However, such synergistic effect was not observed between NH4+ and other alkali cations. In addition, the impact of substrate on Mo deposition was also studied using Pt and Cu electrodes with different activity toward hydrogen evolution reaction. Electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to characterize the surface morphology, crystallographic structure, and oxidation state of Mo in the electrodeposited films.

Abstract:This work details the efficiency of Ni-Mo alloy as an electrode for water splitting application through electrodeposition method. Nano-crystalline Ni-Mo alloy coatings were deposited in the current density (c.d.) range of 1.0–4.0Adm−2 on a copper substrate, and were investigated for their deposit characters, and their electrocatalytic behaviours in 1.0M KOH solution. The electrocatalytic behaviour of the coatings, in terms of their hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), were evaluated by electrochemical methods, like cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronopotentiometry (CP). Experimental results revealed that Ni-Mo alloy electrodeposited at 1.0Adm−2 (38.3wt% Mo) and 4.0Adm−2 (33.2wt% Mo) shows the highest electrocatalytic tendency for HER and OER, respectively. The corrosion behaviour of Ni-Mo alloy coated at 4.0Adm−2 is found to be the most corrosion resistant in the same alkaline medium, compared to other coatings. The highest electrocatalytic activity of Ni-Mo alloy deposit for both HER and OER, depending on deposition c.d. was attributed to their composition (in terms of Ni and Mo content), structure and surface morphology; supported by EDXA, XRD, SEM and AFM analyses. The experimental study demonstrated that Ni-Mo alloy coatings follow Volmer-Tafel type of mechanism for HER, testified by Tafel slope analyses.

Nanosponge-like Solid Solution of NiMo with a High Hydrogen Evolution Reaction Performance over a Wide Range of Current Densities

Abstract:Owing to unstable electrical energy generation from intermittent solar and wind energy sources, the development of efficient and durable nonnoble electrocatalysts is extremely desirable, in particular, those that can be used over a wide range of current densities for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), especially >1 A cm–2, which is extremely desirable for energy transformation in power systems. Here, a nanosponge-like NiMo solid solution based on a nanoscale Kirkendall effect is fabricated via a one-step high-temperature sintering method. A polycrystalline layer of NiMo oxyhydroxide is formed on the surface of the as-prepared electrode after aging, thus achieving a low overpotential and Tafel slope of 37 mV at 10 mA cm–2 and 39.2 mV dec–1, respectively. The electrode displays superior electrochemical stability over a wide range of current densities without compromising its electrocatalytic activity; in particular, it is durable for over 300 h at 2 A cm–2. This is attributed to the combination of the 3D-interconnected nanosponge structure, synergistic effect between the Ni and Mo species, lattice distortion of the solid solution, and its high conductivity. Abstract:Owing to the depletion of renewable energy sources, manufacturing stable, efficient and economical non-noble electrode materials for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) through electrochemical water splitting is a promising avenue. In this work, Ni–Mo alloy films containing different Mo concentrations were synthesized via potentiostatic technique, and the mechanism of Ni 2+ and Mo 6+ co-deposition in an ethylene glycol system (EG) was recorded. The co-deposition mechanism of Mo 6+ and Ni 2+ in the EG shows that the existence of Ni 2+ can facilitate the reduction of Mo 6+ , while Mo 6+ can impede the reduction of Ni 2+ . Furthermore, both functions could be reinforced owing to the improved content of Ni 2+ and Mo 6+ in the EG system. Ni–Mo alloy films containing different Mo concentrations could be obtained from the EG solution, and their microstructures could be changed by changing the Mo content. Scanning electron microscopy micrographs exhibit that Ni–Mo alloy films with 10.84 wt% Mo show a cauliflower-like pattern. Benefiting from the alloying technique to modify the Ni electronic structure with Mo, coupled with the concurrent presence of an appropriate cauliflower-like structure, Ni–Mo alloy films with 10.84 wt% Mo show remarkable catalytic activity and durability with an HER overpotential of 74 mV ( η 10 , overpotential was recorded at j = 10 mA cm −2 ) in 1.0 M KOH solution.

Phase Engineering and Surface Reconstruction of FeNiMo Alloys As High Efficient Electrode for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:In the field of electrocatalysis, most of the electrodes have the problem of poor mechanical properties, which leads to the electrode can not be used on a large scale. At present, most bulk electrodes are used to study their mechanical properties due to their unique phase composition distribution and facile fabricate methods. But their novel properties in the field of electrocatalysts have not been fully developed. Multi-element bulk electrodes not only diversified the electronic states, but also build complex surface morphology by different dissolution rate between multi-phase distribution. In this paper, we synthesized the FeNiMo bulk electrode for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with two-phase coexistence of Mo-doped face center cubic phase (FCC) and Mo-rich intermetallic compound (IMC) phase. During cyclic voltammetry activation, the surface reconstruction of Mo-rich IMC phases generated by ion leaching leaves Fe-Ni pore structures with more active area, which enhances OER performance. Meanwhile, the electron states get more diverse on the surface of remaining FCC phases due to Mo doping, which provides more suitable sites for four-step OER process. The FeNiMo electrode shows an ultra-low overpotential of 212 mV and 293.4 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) and 100 mA cm(-2) , respectively. Moreover, it can maintain stability at 100 mA cm(-2) for up to 72 h. This work provides a strategy for studying the relationship between phase composition and electrochemical performance of alloy bulk electrodes.
Improving plasma sprayed Raney-type nickel–molybdenum electrodes towards high-performance hydrogen evolution in alkaline medium

Abstract:Abstract Rationally designed free-standing and binder-free Raney-type nickel–molybdenum (Ni–Mo) electrodes produced via atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) are developed by correlating APS process parameters with the microstructure of electrodes and their electrochemical performance in alkaline media. The results revealed that the electrode morphology and elemental composition are highly affected by the plasma parameters during the electrode fabrication. It is found that increasing plasma gas flow rate and input plasma power resulted in higher in-flight particle velocities and shorter dwell time, which in result delivered electrodes with much finer structure exhibiting homogeneous distribution of phases, larger quantity of micro pores and suitable content of Ni and Mo. Tafel slope of electrodes decreased with increasing the in-flight particles velocities from 71 to 33 mV dec −1 in 30 wt.% KOH. However, beyond a critical threshold in-flight velocity and temperature of particles, electrodes started to exhibit larger globular pores and consequently reduced catalytic performance and higher Tafel slop of 36 mV dec −1 in 30 wt.% KOH. Despite slightly lower electrochemical performance, the electrodes produced with highest plasma gas flow and energy showed most inter-particle bonded structure as well as highest stability with no measurable degradation over 47 days in operation as HER electrode in 30 wt.% KOH. The Raney-type Ni–Mo electrode fabricated at highest plasma gas flow rate and input plasma power has been tested as HER electrode in alkaline water electrolyzer, which delivered high current densities of 0.72 and 2 A cm −2 at 1.8 and 2.2 V, respectively, representing a novel prime example of HER electrode, which can synergistically catalyze the HER in alkaline electrolyzer. This study shows that sluggish alkaline HER can be circumvented by rational electrode composition and interface engineering.

Abstract:Pure Ni and three Ni–Co alloys films, i.e. Ni–4wt.%Co, Ni–18wt.%Co, and Ni–40wt.%Co, are electrodeposited at room temperature from the choline chloride/ethylene glycol deep eutectic solvent dissolved by nickel or/and cobalt chlorides. Electrodeposition mechanism, microstructure, and corrosion properties of the films are investigated. Surface morphology and chemical composite of the films are significantly dependent on the Ni2+ and Co2+ concentrations in the electrolytes. Interestingly, it is found that the amount of cobalt in the Ni–Co alloy films is significantly lower than that present in the electrolytes, which indicates an absence of anomalous codeposition process for the non-aqueous electrolytes. However, anomalous codeposition of Ni–Co deposits is frequently observed for the aqueous electrolytes. The Ni–Co alloy films possess face-centered cubic structures and refined grains revealed by X-ray diffractometer and scanning electron microscope. Potentiodynamic polarization measurements show that the Ni film exhibits the noblest corrosion potential and the lowest corrosion current compared with the Ni–Co alloys films. Moreover, the more Co content the Ni–Co films have, the more negative corrosion potential and the higher corrosion current the films exhibit.

Abstract:The optimum process conditions of La-Co-Mo alloy electrodeposition were obtained by orthogonal test. La-Mo, Co-Mo and La-Co-Mo alloys were respectively deposited on titanium substrates with DSA anodes. The properties of Mo alloys were detected with methods of AES, electronic thickness gauge, micro-hardness tester, scratch adhesion test and salt spray test. The obtained Mo alloy deposits were fine with good adhesion and strong corrosion resistance at high temperature. The polarization curves prove that the over-potential of hydrogen evolution for the alloy deposits of La-Mo, Co-Mo, La-Co-Mo on the titanium substrates is lower than that for titanium cathodes, and electro-catalysis capacity is higher than that for titanium cathodes. It's prospected that Mo alloy deposits on the titanium substrate can be used as new cathodes with high activation in chlorine alkali industry.

Abstract:Choline chloride-ethylene glycol (ChCl-EG) deep eutectic solvents were used as the electrolytes to study the cathode reduction process. The electrochemical behaviour of nickel and copper ions in ChCl-EG, the morphology, phase composition and corrosion resistance of the coatings were characterized. The results showed that the increase in the temperature of the electrodeposition solution system can make the reduction potentials of nickel and copper ions approaching, making it easier to achieve co-deposition. When the temperature of the solution was 70°C, a nickel-copper alloy similar to the commercial Monel (Ni70Cu30) with good corrosion resistance can be obtained.
