Abstract:Reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer miniemulsion (co)polymerizations of vinyl acetate (VAc) and vinyl chloride (VC) are conducted in the presence of a fluorinated xthanate (X1). VAc miniemulsion polymerization can be well controlled by X1, and PVAc with small polydispersity index (PDI, <1.20) are obtained. X1 also shows well mediative effect to VC-VAc miniemulsion copolymerization, while the PDI of VC-VAc copolymer is greater than that of PVAc since a chain transfer rate to VC is greater than that to VAc. PVAc-b-PVC copolymers are synthesized by VC miniemulsion polymerizations mediated by X1-terminated PVAc. PDIs of PVAc-b-PVC copolymers are greater than that of PVAc and VC-VAc random copolymers with close monomer compositions, and increase with the increase of VC conversion. This is caused by the increased chain transfer to monomer and the formation of monomer-rich and polymer-rich phases during the VC polymerization stage. Abstract:The copolymer emulsion of polyurethane-acrylate-vinyltriethoxysilane(KH570) was prepared with sodium laurylsulfate and OP-10 as emulsifiers by pre-emulsion process.The structure of copolymer and latex particle morphology were characterized by IR and TEM.The influence of amount of KH-570,temperature and pH value on copolymerization rate was discussed.The results showed that the copolymer contains siloxane groups and the latex particles ranged from 50～100 nm.The conversion rate decrease with increase of the quantity of KH-570 and decrease of the temperature.Incorporation of KH-570 can improve the water resistance of the coatings film significantly.

Abstract:A series of stable alkoxysilane-modified acrylate latexes with various alkoxysilane fractions were synthesized by miniemulsion polymerization. A small fraction of alkoxysilane side groups were incorporated into acrylic main chains via copolymerization. The hydroxyl oligomer alkoxysilane was grafted to the main chains via the condensation reaction of the hydroxyl groups with hydrolyzed alkxoysilane groups. It was found that: (1) γ-methacryl oxypropyl trimethoxysilane (MPMS) was a better alkoxysilane comonomer than vinyltriethoxysilane (VTES) in terms of colloid stability during polymerization and the hydrophobic property of the resulted polymer coating; (2) when MPMS was used, the colloid stability was very good either during polymerization or in storage; (3) the oligomer alkoxysilane was grafting onto with a grafted degree around 50%; (4) the oligomer alkoxysilane dramatically increased the hydrophobic property of the resulted coating. The water contact angle increased from 75° to 95° with 10% (mass) oligomer alkoxysilane and further up to 105° with 20% (mass) oiligomer alkoxysilane.

Abstract:A new bisacrylate, 1,4-butanediol bis(alpha-trimethylsiloxyacrylate), that incorporates trimethylsiloxy (Me 3 SiO-) groups on the alpha-position of each acrylic moiety can be synthesized in acceptable yield (67%) and analytical purity starting from the readily available 1,4-butanediol dipyruvate. The monomer can be crosslinked efficiently under UV-curing conditions as long as the curing temperature is not above 125 ° C, temperature at which the propagation reaction becomes reversible (ceiling temperature effect).

Abstract:VAc/VeoVa10 emulsion copolymerization was studied using sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDS) as an emulsifier, potassium persulfate (KPS) as an initiator and PVA as a protective colloid. The effects of monomer composition, reaction temperature, emulsifier concentration and initiator concentration on the copolymerization rate (Rp) of phase Ⅱ were investigated. It showed that the overall apparent copolymerization energy of the system was 106.55 kJ/mol. The monomer composition had no significant influence on the Rp.

Abstract:We designed and used a cyclohexenyl-functionalized amphiphilic macromolecular reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (macro-RAFT) agent as surfactant and polymerization mediator for (mini) emulsion polymerization of styrene (St), aiming at synthesizing nanoparticles with vinyl-enriched surface and well-defined polymer chains. Unexpectedly, the pendent cyclohexenyl units in the macro-RAFT agent were found to undergo significant copolymerization with St exclusively during the nucleation period in the ab initio emulsion polymerization, leading to the consumption of cyclohexenyl groups, positive deviation of molecular weights, and broad molecular weight distributions. By contrast, in miniemulsion polymerization, the radical polymerization exhibited superb selectivity toward St monomers relative to the pendent cyclohexene vinyl units just as in the solution polymerization. The obtained polymer chains retained designed molecular weights, low polydispersity indexes, and quantitative cyclohexenyl functionalities confined to the particle surface. Thus, PSt particles with vinyl-enriched surface were obtained via miniemulsion polymerization.

Abstract:Styrene/butyl acrylate/crosslinker emulsion copolymerization was studied using sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) as emulsifier, potassium persulfate (KPS) as initiator and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) and polybutadiene rubber (PB) as crosslinker. Effects of monomers ratio, reaction temperature, emulsifier concentration and initiator concentration on the rate of copolymerization were investigated. Experimental results showed that overall apparent activation energy of the copolymerization system was 70.67 kJ/mol, the rate of copolymerization had a direct ratio to power of 0.43 of emulsifier, power of 0.56 of initiator as well as power of 0.49 of monomer butyl acrylate.

Abstract:This study conducts a theoretical exploration of the free radical polymerization of polydimethylsiloxane homopolymers with a methyl methacrylate end group (PDMS-MA). To achieve this, a methodology is developed to model and simulate experimental data previously reported by one of the authors. The model incorporates a typical chain reaction mechanism, encompassing initiation, propagation, chain transfer, and termination stages. The resulting ordinary differential equations from this mechanistic approach are numerically integrated over time. Employing a semi-heuristic procedure, the study derives estimated values for the diffusive steps of termination (ktd) and propagation (kpd). Methodological accuracy is assessed through a comparison of the mathematical model results and experimental data. This evaluation includes the estimation of conversion and the average molecular weight (both number (Mn) and weight (Mw)) at three distinct monomer concentrations, considering a 4.78% mol initiator-to-monomer ratio. The theoretical results obtained from this study contribute to a better understanding of the evolution of diffusion coefficients. These coefficients play a crucial role in influencing the behavior of the studied reactions, particularly in relation to the absence of the autoacceleration effect in these reactions.

Abstract:A new type of organic-inorganic hybrid latex was synthesized by free radical seeded emulsion (co) polymerization with the participation of hydrolysis-condensation reaction.The kinetics of these two simultaneous reactions determines the microstructure and properties of latex particles.A model of monomer partition was developed by using a partition constant.A free radical seeded emulsion polymerization model with the monomer partition was presented.On the basis of these two models and the features of hydrolysis-condensation reaction for the functional groups in various phases in the heterogeneous system,a complete kinetic model of free radical seeded emulsion polymerization with the participation of hydrolysis-condensation reaction was established.The complete model explains the principle of mass transport,characteristics of heterogeneous reaction and the interaction of free radical (co)polymerization and hydrolysis-condensation reaction in this system.

Abstract:The first experience of virtual free-radical copolymerization (FRCP) of vinyl monomers with stable radicals in the framework of the digital twins (DTs) concept (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2309.11616" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2309.11616">arXiv:2309.11616</a> [physics.chem-ph] and <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2311.02752" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2311.02752">arXiv:2311.02752</a> [cond-mat.mtrl-sci]) is extended to N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPA). The virtualization of the chemical process is based on the concept of a chain reaction that covers a set of elementary reactions (ERs) and is the most suitable for quantum chemical treatment. The calculations were performed using a semi-empirical version of the unrestricted Hartree-Fock approximation. Once input in the chemical reactor, providing free-radical polymerization of NIPA, the fullerene C60 inhibits capturing the formed monomer-radicals and terminates the polymerization. The obtained virtual kinetic data, providing the appearance of an induction period at the initial stage of the NIPA polymerization, are in a full agreement with experimental reality.

Abstract:The kinetics of aqueous free-radical graft polymerization of 1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone onto silica activated with vinyltrimethoxysilane was studied with a mechanistic polymerization model and experimental data for a temperature range of 70–90 °C. The polymerization was initiated with hydrogen peroxide with initial monomer concentrations ranging from 10 to 40 vol %. The kinetic model, which incorporates the hybrid cage–complex initiation mechanism, describes the experimental polymerization data for which the kinetic order, with respect to the monomer concentration, varies from 1 to . Surface chain growth occurs by both monomer addition and homopolymer grafting, although the latter contribution to the total polymer graft yield is less significant. Increasing the initial monomer concentration enhances both surface polymer density and average grafted chain length. Nickel-Catalyzed Ethylene Copolymerization with Vinylalkoxysilanes: A Computational Study

Abstract:Since the discovery of α-diimine catalysts in 1995, an extensive series of Brookhart-type complexes have shown their excellence in catalyzing ethylene polymerizations with remarkable activity and a high molecular weight. However, although this class of palladium complexes has proven proficiency in catalyzing ethylene copolymerization with various polar monomers, the α-diimine nickel catalysts have generally exhibited a much worse performance in these copolymerizations compared to their palladium counterparts. Recently, Brookhart et al. reported a notable exception, demonstrating that α-diimine nickel catalysts could catalyze the ethylene copolymerization with some vinylalkoxysilanes effectively, producing functionalized polyethylene incorporating trialkoxysilane (-Si(OR)3) groups. This breakthrough is significant since Pd-catalyzed copolymerizations are commercially less usable due to the high cost of palladium. Thus, the utilization of Ni, given its abundance in raw materials and cost-effectiveness, is a landmark in ethylene/polar vinyl monomer copolymerization. Inspired by these findings, we used density functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate the mechanistic study of ethylene copolymerization with vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMoS) catalyzed by Brookhart-type nickel catalysts, aiming to elucidate the molecular-level understanding of this unique reaction. Initially, the nickel complexes and cationic active species were optimized through DFT calculations. Subsequently, we explored the mechanisms including the chain initiation, chain propagation, and chain termination of ethylene homopolymerization and copolymerization catalyzed by Brookhart-type complexes. Finally, we conducted an energetic analysis of both the in-chain and chain-end of silane enchainment. It was found that chain initiation is the dominant step in the ethylene homopolymerization catalyzed by the α-diimine Ni complex. The 1,2- and 2,1-insertion of vinylalkoxysilane exhibit similar barriers, explaining the fact that both five-membered and four-membered chelates were identified experimentally. After the VTMoS insertion, the barriers of ethylene reinsertion become higher, indicating that this step is the rate-determining step, which could be attributed to the steric hindrance between the incoming ethylene and the bulky silane substrate. We have also reported the energetic analysis of the distribution of polar substrates. The dominant pathway of chain-end -Si(OR)3 incorporation is suggested as chain-walking → ring-opening → ethylene insertion, and the preference of chain-end -Si(OR)3 incorporation is primarily attributed to the steric repulsion between the pre-inserted silane group and the incoming ethylene molecule, reducing the likelihood of in-chain incorporation.

Abstract:Secondary reactions in the radical polymerization of acrylic monomers are challenging to include in the existing kinetic models. It is laborious to experimentally measure their rate coefficients as they occur in parallel to the main reactions, but with a much smaller rate. However, secondary reactions contribute to the formation of specific functional groups in polymer molecules, e.g., unsaturation, branching, etc., influencing the molecular and material properties of the polymers. Therefore, it is important to correctly account for them in the computer models/digital twins of the polymerization processes to correctly predict the polymer structures. Because of the large uncertainties on secondary rate coefficients, this work provides a systematic review of the experimental measurements and theoretical predictions of the secondary reactions’ rate coefficients, accounting for mid-chain radical propagation, backbiting, beta-scission, chain transfer to polymer, and monomer and macromonomer propagation. Special attention is devoted to the measurement techniques, outlining the accuracy and limitations of each method. For the theoretical calculations, we focus on the Arrhenius parameters predictions and try to make fairer comparisons with experiments.

Abstract:The high solids semicontinuous emulsion polymerization of polyvinyl acetate using poly (vinyl alcohol-co-vinyl acetate) as protective colloid is investigated by optical spectroscopy. The suitability of Photon Density Wave (PDW) spectroscopy as inline Process Analytical Technology (PAT) for emulsion polymerization processes at high solid contents (>40% (w/w)) is studied and evaluated. Inline data on absorption and scattering in the dispersion is obtained in real-time. The radical polymerization of vinyl acetate to polyvinyl acetate using ascorbic acid and sodium persulfate as redox initiator system and poly (vinyl alcohol-co-vinyl acetate) as protective colloid is investigated. Starved–feed radical emulsion polymerization yielded particle sizes in the nanometer size regime. PDW spectroscopy is used to monitor the progress of polymerization by studying the absorption and scattering properties during the synthesis of dispersions with increasing monomer amount and correspondingly decreasing feed rate of protective colloid. Results are compared to particle sizes determined with offline dynamic light scattering (DLS) and static light scattering (SLS) during the synthesis.

Abstract:The first experience of virtual free-radical polymerization of a set of vinyl monomers in the framework of the digital twins (DTs) concept (Polymers 2023, 15, 2999) is extended to methyl methacrylate, copolymerized with small additives of stable radicals such as fullerene C60 and TEMPO. The virtualization of chemical processes is based on the assumption of basic chain reactions that lay the foundation of polymerization. In the current study, a set of elementary reactions, covering the initial stage of the polymerization, is considered. The reactions are the most suitable for quantum chemical treatment. The calculations, covering about 30 DTs, were carried out using a semi-empirical version of the unrestricted Hartree-Fock approximation. The main energy and spin-density parameters of the ground state of DTs are determined. The barrier profiles of three DTs were calculated, which led the foundation for determining the activation energy of the studied processes. The decisive role of spins in the formation of transition states of these processes is confirmed. The two stable radicals behave quite differently with respect to the polymerization of the studied monomer. The action of fullerene C60 concerns mainly the capturing of the initiating free radicals, anchoring them to the molecule body and thus slowing the main polarization process. In contrast, TEMPO effectively capture monomer radicals manifesting itself as a killer of the polymerization thus providing the appearance of the induction period in practice. The obtained virtual kinetic data are in a full consent with experimental reality.

Abstract:The supported catalysts, specifically those containing cobalt(II) acetylacetonate (Co(acac)2), are among the important materials for the organometallic-mediated radical polymerization of vinyl acetate (VAc) monomers. In this study, we report an applicable and efficient technique to produce new supported Co(acac)2 catalysts through adsorption of Co(acac)2 on the surface of mesoporous silica gel particles. For this purpose, adsorption process of Co(acac)2 on these particles was studied from different perspectives such as mechanism, kinetics and thermodynamic. Adsorption experiments were conducted under various conditions, including various contact times, initial Co(acac)2 concentrations, and temperatures. At the end, a number of adsorption models with the highest compatibility with the experimental data were implemented. The polymerization of VAc was carried out using a new supported catalyst. This catalyst was highly efficient for either controlling the radical polymerization and synthesis of poly vinyl acetate with controlled molecular weight and molecular weight distribution.

Abstract:The properties of waterborne polymer dispersions synthesized by emulsion radical polymerization are influenced by reactions in both the aqueous medium and the growing particles. Mathematical models representing the process often do not consider the difference in the propagation rate coefficient ( k p ) of monomers in the two phases, despite the body of evidence demonstrating that solvent polarity influences monomer-monomer and monomer-solvent hydrogen-bonding that affects both k p homopropagation values and copolymerization reactivity ratios. Therefore, it is vital to develop experimental approaches to systematically measure the influence of solvent on the copolymerization kinetics of hydrophobic monomers under conditions that are similar to emulsion systems. In this work, we study the copolymerization of methyl acrylate (MA) with di(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (DEGMEMA) as models for the common emulsion monomers butyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate. As well as varying solvent choice and monomer concentration, MA/DEGMEMA copolymerization kinetics are compared to those of MA with methacrylic acid (MAA) to determine the influence of monomer functionality on its relative reactivity. The findings suggest that the copolymer composition of all methacrylate-acrylate systems – whether involving functional or non-functional monomers – converge to a single curve in protic polar aqueous solution.

Abstract:Visible light-induced photo atom transfer radical polymerization (photoATRP) is a highly effective and environmentally friendly approach for synthesizing copolymers of polar and non-polar monomers, offering outstanding properties such as printability, adhesion, paintability, pour point depression, and viscosity index improvement. In this study, simultaneous reverse and normal initiation (SR & NI) photoATRP of acrylates (polar monomers) and higher α-olefins (C 8 –C 12 ) (non-polar monomers) was conducted using Cu II Br 2 /L (L = N , N , N ′, N ′′, N ′′-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA), tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (Tren), and 2,4,6-tripyridyl-(2-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine (TPT)) complexes. Radical generation takes place both from the photoinitiator (PI), namely phenylbis(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)phosphine oxide (BAPO), and via direct photolysis of Cu II /L complexes to initiate polymerization. Copolymers with a controlled molecular weight (MW), narrow dispersity ( Đ ≤ 1.13), and high incorporation of α-olefins (up to 30%) were obtained. Kinetic analysis revealed a first-order, controlled, and living radical polymerization behavior. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were employed to gain mechanistic insights into the polymerization behavior via two distinct pathways, leading to the production of two different products, PCA2 and PCB2 with activation energy barriers of 14.3 kcal mol −1 and 17.8 kcal mol −1 , respectively.

Abstract:The alcoholysis process of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) is both important and complex. In this work, we conduct experimental and computational investigations to examine the alcoholysis kinetics and mechanism of EVA with an ethylene content if less than 50 mol%. Our findings indicate that the overall structure of EVA polymer chain has little effect on the alcoholysis rate. However, the local structure of the acetate group, particularly its association with the ethylene content, significantly affects the overall alcloholysis. To predict the influence of ethylene content on the overall rate constant, we propose an empirical model based on detailed kinetic studies of triads. Additionally, we discover a self-acceleration phenomenon in EVA alcoholysis, although it is less pronounced compared to polyvinyl acetate. Furthermore, we employed quantum chemical calculation using density functional theory (DFT) to confirm the effect of structure on EVA alcoholysis. Notably, we investigate, for the first time, the influence of neighboring hydroxyl group on self-acceleration phenomenon through theoretical calculations. This work offers valuable insight into EVA alcoholysis and may serve as a guide for exploring its mechanism and designing processes for producing EVA related polymer materials.

Abstract:The deposition process during emulsion polymerization can be classified as both particulate and reaction fouling, but a deeper understanding of the deposition mechanism, especially in combination with the polymerization process, is lacking. Here, a more in‐depth understanding of the deposition mechanism was sought by investigating the fouling formation of a Vinyl acetate and Versa® 10 copolymer on a heated stainless steel surface during emulsion polymerization. Its deposition behavior was also compared with the behavior of an already reacted polymer. All possible influencing factors were investigated separately, and the fouling was quantified by the mass based fouling resistance and the fouling layer composition. The fouling rates of both experimental approaches (ongoing reaction versus already reacted polymer) were used to determine the fraction of reaction fouling along the reaction pathway. The solids content and the driving temperature difference were identified as the main factors influencing fouling formation. The deposited material was composed of latex particles and emulsifier with particle size and number depending on the respective equilibrium composition of the fluid phase. The reaction fouling rate was correlated with the proportion of free initiator radicals and the amount of dissolved monomer in the aqueous phase. This article is protected by copyright.
