Abstract:The structure and hydrogen bonding of the melt-crystallized atactic poly(vinyl alcohol) (A-PVA) films, which were carefully prepared without significant thermal degradation, have been characterized by CP/MAS 13C NMR spectroscopy. The 13C spin–lattice relaxation analysis has revealed that there exist three components with different T1C values, the crystalline, less mobile noncrystalline and mobile noncrystalline components, in good accord with the results for different PVA samples previously reported. It should be noted that the T1C values of the crystalline and noncrystalline components are appreciably smaller for the melt-crystallized films than those for the un-annealed and annealed samples prepared by casting from the aqueous solution. The 13C NMR spectra of the crystalline and noncrystalline components are separately recorded by using the difference in T1C and their CH lines are successfully resolved into three and seven constituent lines by the least-squares curve fitting, respectively. Moreover, the statistical analysis of the integrated intensities of the constituent lines thus obtained enables to determine the probability fa for the formation of intramolecular hydrogen bonding in the successive two OH groups along each chain and another probability ft of the trans conformation for the crystalline and noncrystalline components. It is found that the fa value is relatively larger for the melt-crystallized films than those for the un-annealed and annealed samples. On the basis of these results, the features of the melt-crystallization and the resulting crystalline–noncrystalline structure are discussed by particularly considering effects of intra- and inter-molecular hydrogen bonding on the crystallization.
Investigation of the Structure of Poly(vinyl Alcohol)–iodine Complex Hydrogels Prepared from the Concentrated Polymer Solutions

Abstract:The structure and dynamics of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)–iodine complex hydrogels that were prepared from concentrated PVA solutions have been characterized by high-resolution solid-state 13C NMR spectroscopy. The fully relaxed dipolar decoupling (DD)/MAS 13C NMR spectrum indicates that the hydrogels contain at least two components, a highly mobile and broader components. The former is assigned to the soluble or well water-swollen PVA chains that are not closely associated with the PVA–iodine complexes, whereas the latter may be mainly ascribed to the aggregated PVA chains that are produced by the formation of the PVA–iodine complexes because no diffraction peaks due to the conventional PVA crystallites are observed by wide-angle X-ray diffractometry. Furthermore, 13C spin-lattice relaxation time (T1C) analyses reveal that the broader component is composed of the highly restricted component probably assignable to PVA molecular chain aggregates containing the PVA–iodine complexes and the less mobile component. As for the former component, their CH resonance line measured by the T1C-filtering method is successfully resolved into 7 constituent lines by the least-squares curve fitting. The statistical analysis of the integrated intensities of the constituent lines thus obtained also reveals that the probability fa for the formation of intramolecular hydrogen bonding in the successive two OH groups along each chain and another probability ft of the trans conformation are, respectively, as high as 0.86 and 0.88. This fact indicates that the PVA molecular chain aggregates containing the PVA–iodine complexes should be composed of PVA segments with the trans-rich conformation and the PVA–iodine complexes therein may also be formed with these several trans-rich segments surrounding the rod-like polyiodine cores in agreement with the so-called aggregation model. Moreover, several new diffraction peaks that should be interpreted in terms of the hexagonal structure are observed for the PVA–iodine complex hydrogels in the low 2θ region in the wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) profile measured by a strong X-ray source at SPring-8. This suggests the necessity of more detailed WAXD characterization to propose a new structure model, which should be referred to as the hexagonal aggregation model, for the PVA–iodine complexes.

Abstract:The elastic properties of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) were investigated on the nanoscale using the new technique of single molecule force spectroscopy by atomic force microscopy (AFM). It was found that the elastic properties of PVA molecules scale linearly with their contour lengths. This finding corroborates that the deformation of individual PVA chains is measured. The force spectra of PVA show a kink at around 200 pN and cannot be fitted by an extended Langevin function. The deviation of the elastic behavior of PVA from a freely jointed chain model may indicate the presence of a suprastructure of PVA in NaCl solution.

Abstract:Poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP), a water-soluble polymer, is known for its excellent biocompatibility. It is generally recognized that the properties of polymers may be profoundly affected by the structure of water absorbed in them. In this study, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) in attenuated total reflection (ATR) and transmission mode was performed to examine the diffusion and structure of water in PVP and its copolymers. The obtained spectra were analyzed using two-dimensional (2D) IR with the aid of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The 2D IR of time-resolved FT-IR/ATR spectra shows that type II water between 3300 and 3500 cm(-1) occurs earlier during the water absorption process, which is also demonstrated by transmission FT-IR at the initial stage of water absorption. Conversely, type II water changes last when desorption takes place. Results from DFT calculations indicate that type II water might be monomeric or dimeric water molecules interacting with a carbonyl group in the pyrrolidone moiety. Furthermore, it is found that vibrations less than 3300 cm(-1) (type I water) arise from water molecules involved in a carbonyl group interacting with more than two water molecules. It is reasonable that the transmission FT-IR spectra of film with an extra low water amount hardly show vibration bands below 3300 cm(-1); however, this region is distinct in the FT-IR/ATR spectra of fully swollen film. In addition, vibration bands between 3800 and 3500 cm(-1) (type III water) are assigned to free water or water with relatively weak hydrogen bonding, as supported by the transmission FT-IR spectra of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and the calculation results. Therefore, the diffusion process and the structures of water in PVP and its copolymers can be successfully accessed on the basis of the 2D IR analysis and DFT calculations.

Abstract:Effects of individual and composed poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) suspending agents on the particle morphology of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) resins were investigated and discussed in the view of PVA absorption at the oil/water interface and interfacial behavior. It was shown that the percentage and surface coverage of PVA at the oil/water interface decreased with the increase of the degree of hydrolysis (DH) of PVA in the DH range of 70-98 mol%, while the interfacial tension of VC/PVA aqueous solution increased linearly with the increase of DH of PVA. PVC resin with more regular particle shape, increased agglomeration and fusion of primary particles, lower porosity and higher bulk density, was prepared by using PVA with a higher DH as a suspending agent. This was caused by the occurrence of drop coalescence at the very early stage of VC polymerization, the increase of particle shrinkage, and the lower colloidal protection to primary particles. It was also shown that the interfacial tension of VC/water in the presence of composed PVA suspending agents varied linearly with the weight composition of the composed PVA suspending agents. The particle properties of PVC resin prepared by using the composed PVC suspending agents were usually situated in between the properties of PVC resins prepared by using the corresponding individual PVA suspending agent. The particle morphology and properties of PVC resin could be controlled by the suitable choice of the composed PVA suspending agents. (C) 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:Poly(vinyl chloride)/layered double hydroxides (PVC/LDHs) composite resins were prepared by in sitti suspension polymerization of vinyl chloride monomer in the presence of LDHs intercalated with dodecyl sulfate anions (LDH-DS), and were further processed to obtain PVC/LDH-DS nanocomposites. It was found that the mean particle size of PVC composite resins decreased as LDH-DS was added in the polymerization system. The 5 and 10% weight loss temperatures of PVC resins significantly increased with the increase of LDH-DS weight fraction in the composite resins. The transmission electron microscopy images showed that LDH-DS particles were partially intercalated and partially exfoliated, and well distributed in the PVC nanocomposites. The storage modulus below the glass transition region and the glass temperature of the PVC/LDH-DS nanocomposites are greater than that of the pristine PVC. The mechanical properties of PVC/LDH-DS nanocomposites indicate that LDH-DS nanoparticles stiffen and toughen PVC. The tensile strength, Young's modulus, and Charpy notched impact strength of the PVC/LDH-DS nanocomposites are greater than those of the pristine PVC and PVC/LDH-DS composites prepared by the melt blending. Abstract:Evaluation and understanding of the thermal behavior of polymers is crucial for many applications, e.g., polymer processing at relatively high temperatures, and for evaluating polymer-polymer miscibility. In this study, the differences in the thermal behavior of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) raw powder and physically crosslinked films were investigated using various methods, such as thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and derivative TGA (DTGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Various strategies were adopted, e.g., film casting from PVA solutions in H2O and D2O and heating of samples at carefully selected temperatures, in order to provide insights about the structure-properties relationship. It was found that the physically crosslinked PVA film presents an increased number of hydrogen bonds and increased thermal stability/slower decomposition rate compared to the PVA raw powder. This is also depicted in the estimated values of specific heat of thermochemical transition. The first thermochemical transition (glass transition) of PVA film, as for the raw powder, overlaps with mass loss from multiple origins. Evidence for minor decomposition that occurs along with impurities removal is presented. The overlapping of various effects (softening, decomposition, and evaporation of impurities) has led to confusion and apparent consistencies, e.g., from the XRD, it is derived that the film has decreased crystallinity, and apparently this is in agreement with the lower value of heat of fusion. However, the heat of fusion in this particular case has a questionable meaning.

Abstract:In this report, high molecular weight polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was prepared by emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization, using the redox initiator of potassium persulfate (KPS) / N,N-dimethyl ethanolamine (DMEA). The structure and property of PVA were studied by using ubbelohde viscometer, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance hydrogen spectroscopy ( 1 H-NMR), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA). The results showed that the viscosity-average degree of polymerization (DP) of PVA 7506, which was much higher than that of PVA commonly used in industrial production. The syndiotacticity and crystallinity of PVA was 54.2 % and 35.6 %, respectively.

Abstract:Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) films prepared by solution casting method or thermal processing techniques have been widely used in industrial applications. However, the relationship between processing methods and structural properties is still unclear. In this study, three film-forming techniques, namely solution casting, blown film extrusion and extrusion casting, were adopted to prepare PVA films and the influence of processing methods on the structural and physical properties of the films was studied. The results showed that blown film (BF) prepared under biaxial elongational flow had higher crystallinity, larger crystallite size and greater in-plane orientation compared to solution cast film (SCF) and extruded film (ETF). SCF showed the smallest crystallite size, slowest melting temperature, fewer defects, evident skin-core structure and in-plane orientation ascribing to its slow film forming process, stratified solidification and low initial macromolecular concentration. ETF displayed the lowest degree of crystallinity and orientation owing to the fast cooling outside the slit die and the absence of strong flow field. Hence, BF and SCF were endowed with high tensile strength (152.8 and 134.5 MPa), good puncture resistance (245.0 and 245.7 N/mm) and excellent oxygen barrier property (P O2 = 3.07 × 10 −19 and 2.33 × 10 −18 cm 3 cm/(cm 2 ·s·Pa)) while ETF exhibited inferior mechanical properties and oxygen barrier performance. These findings are of significance for building relationships between processing techniques, structural characteristics and practical properties of PVA films and help match appropriate film forming technology to the production of films for different application scenarios.

Abstract:Solid-state NMR is one of the most powerful analytical methods for the structural characterization and dynamics of polymers. Owing to its intrinsically low signal sensitivity, however, analysis of trace chemical species supported on polymers remains challenging. Solid-state NMR with dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP-NMR) has recently attracted attention as a highly sensitive NMR measurement method for analyzing polymers. We recently investigated DNP-NMR for insoluble polymers, particularly cross-linked polymers, engineering plastics, and polymer-supported catalysts, and achieved high NMR signal sensitivity at a routinely accessible level. In this focus review, we present case studies on DNP-NMR measurements for a wide range of polymers.

Abstract:Environmentally friendly polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) has a broad range of potential applications in membrane science. This article describes the co-crosslinking used to adjust the water resistance and swelling level of PVA molecules and broaden their applications. To integrate functional groups and carbon chains in the PVA matrix, the crosslinking agents glutaraldehyde (GA) and ammonium persulfate (APS) were used, the complexity of the PVA crosslinking structure can be dramatically increased. The results showed that the crosslinked PVA film's water resistance and thermal stability qualities have improved. The synergistic crosslinked film's swelling percentage, maximum decomposition temperature, and diffusion constant altered from 590 %, 242.9 °C, and 1.13 × 10 −11 m 2 /s to 129 %, 344.7 °C, 0.02 × 10 −11 m 2 /s respectively. The synergistic crosslinked film's swelling percentage, maximum decomposition temperature, and diffusion constant were altered with the molecule structure design. This method can give a novel reference to the performances design of hydrophilic polymers in different applications.

Abstract:Multidimensional solution NMR (19F, 1H, and 13C) has been used to determine chain-ends and backbone branching points and to obtain unambiguous 19F and 1H resonances assignments from these chain-ends and branching structures in poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF). The multidimensional NMR methods employed in this study not only enabled the resonance assignments of the last monomer of the chain but also provided assignments for the last three monomer units of chain-end structures. The chain-end signals from PVDF were determined using spin–lattice relaxation measurements and 2D diffusion ordered spectroscopy (DOSY) analysis. 2D-NMR analyses were also used to assign resonances of chain branching points along the backbone of the polymer.

Abstract:The structure and hydrogen bonding of the hydrated stereoregular poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) films have been investigated by high-resolution solid-state 13 C NMR spectroscopy. It is found by the C-13 spin-lattice relaxation analysis that there exist three components with different Tic values assigned to the crystalline, less mobile and mobile components for the hydrated syndiotactic PVA (S-PVA) and highly isotactic PVA (HI-PVA) films. The line shape analysis indicates that the probability of intramolecular hydrogen bonding is appreciably increased in the crystalline region for the S-PVA films by the hydration but a slightly helical structure, which is probably allowed by the formation of the successive intramolecular hydrogen bondings along the chains in the crystalline region, seems not to undergo any significant change by the hydration for HI-PVA. This fact indicates that intramolecular hydrogen bonding is more stable in the hydrated state in the crystalline region. As for the less mobile component, the line shape of the CH resonance line for the hydrated S-PVA or HI-PVA films is found to be very similar to that of the corresponding crystalline component, probably being due to the successive formation of intermolecular or intramolecular hydrogen bonding in the interfacial region, which mainly contributes to the less mobile component, for the S-PVA or HI-PVA films even in the hydrated state. The mole fractions of the mm, mr and rr sequences are also estimated for the mobile component that is produced in each stereoregular PVA sample by swelling with water and it is concluded that no prominent preferential partitioning of the mm, mr and rr sequences occurs in the crystalline and noncrystalline regions for the PVA films with different tacticities. Poly(vinyl alcohol) Fibrils with Highly Oriented Amorphous Chains Developed in Electrospun Nanofibers

Abstract:Aligned poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) fibers with diameters of about 180 ± 22 nm were obtained by using a wire–drum collector during electrospinning of aqueous solutions of PVA with 99% hydrolysis. The fiber orientation factor, defined by the Herman’s orientation function, was about 0.95 with respect to the collecting direction. Subjected to a stepwise heating protocol, the crystal orientation and crystallinity in the aligned fibers at different annealing temperatures (T a) were determined by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and synchrotron 2D wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). Upon heating, FTIR results disclosed the desorption of residual water molecules at T a < 100 °C and an increase in crystal orientation at elevated temperatures as-revealed by the decreasing dichroism of the crystal-related band at 1143 cm–1 until fiber melting, followed by thermal degradation at T a ≳ 190 °C. The enhanced crystal orientation along the fiber axis at high T a (≳100 °C) was also validated by the detailed analyses of the 2D WAXD patterns to extract the Herman’s orientation factor of the reciprocal lattice vectors of the (101/101̅) crystal planes from which the chain orientation factor in the crystalline phase was derived to dramatically increase from 0.57 at 35 °C to reach the highest value of 0.88 at 200 °C. Meanwhile, the fiber crystallinity was also increased upon heating from 31% at 35 °C to 35% at 100 °C and further up to 37% at 180 °C. The peculiar two-step enhancement in the crystal orientation and fiber crystallinity at elevated temperatures is attributed to the presence of the fibrils comprising the fiber, which are composed of highly oriented amorphous chains as well as the loosely packed amorphous chains existing in between the oriented crystalline domains. The presence of fibrils and fiber bundles (superstructures of the fibrils) was validated by atomic force microscopy as well as scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The highly oriented amorphous chains were disclosed by the anomalous meridional X-ray diffraction with a unique spacing of 2.44 Å, which is associated with the spacing along the chain axis in the closely packed and aligned chains with zigzag conformation. These extended amorphous chains may form strong intrachain and interchain hydrogen bonds, which firmly hold the fiber integrity for restricting orientation relaxation of chain molecules upon heating, therefore, to readily proceed the chain reorganization and develop oriented crystals directly at high T a. The unique features of fibrils existing in the as-spun PVA fibers are relevant to the flow-induced phase separation of the electrospinning jet to produce phase-separated structure of strings with various widths. A discussion on the structures evolved from the liquid strings to the solid fibrils and subsequent heating effect is provided.

Abstract:The poly(vinyl butyral) (PVB) is a resin that is used in areas where strong adhesion, optical transparency, multi-surface adhesion, hardness and flexibility are required. The purpose of this research is to cross-link the bonds in this polymer by benzoyl peroxide as a type of peroxide. The oxygen-oxygen bond of benzoyl peroxide was fragmented to produce two radicals by heating, and a hydrogen atom was separated from the hydroxyl group, and subsequently, the reaction of oxygen radical to acetylated carbon in the vinyl butyral monomer and forming a cross-link had happened. The properties of the cross-linked polymer were investigated and compared with linear polymer. Chemical identification tests such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction pattern (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), also mechanical tests including, Shore D Hardness test, impact and tensile test were applied. Through characterization and physical tests, it can be concluded that the cross-linked polymer had more resistance and can distribute the impact force better, endured more stress and also exhibited greater toughness, denser in color, more adhesion, and higher crystallinity than the linear polymer.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have been performed on the physically crosslinking poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel to study the deformation mechanisms under uniaxial tensile conditions. The distributions of hydroxyl oxygens and dihedral angle and the number of hydrogen bonds have been analysed to study the structure of the hydrogel. The water content and temperature dependency of mechanical properties have been investigated. The energy contributions from the partially united atom potential have been calculated as a function of strain. It is found that the stress–strain curve comprises toe region, linear region and yield and failure region which is close to most biomaterials. In the toe and yield region, all the contributions to the internal energy change a little. However, in the linear region, the bond stretching and angle bending energy increase rapidly and mainly dominate the region, and the energy increases more rapidly with the increasing water content but the decreasing temperature. The degree of crosslinking decreases with the increasing deformation. The polymer chains occur significant torsional activity in the toe region. Hydrogen bonds are stable in the toe and yield region, but the hydrogen bonds between hydroxyl groups and waters decrease in the linear region.

Abstract:The network structure of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogels obtained by freezing-thawing cycles was investigated by solid-state (1)H low-field NMR spectroscopy. By the application of multiple-quantum NMR experiments, we obtain information about the segmental order parameter, which is directly related to the restrictions on chain motion (cross-links) formed upon gelation. These measurements indicate that the network mesh size as well as the relative amount of nonelastic defects (i.e., non-cross-linked chains, dangling chains, loops) decrease with the number of freezing-thawing cycles but are independent of the polymer concentration. The formation of the PVA network is accompanied by an increasing fraction of polymer with fast magnetization decay ( approximately 20 mus). The quantitative study of this rigid phase with a specific refocusing pulse sequence shows that it is composed of a primary crystalline polymer phase ( approximately 5%), which constitutes the main support of the network structure and determines the mesh size, and a secondary population of more imperfect crystallites, which increase the number of elastic chain segments in the polymer gel but do not affect the average network mesh size appreciably. Correspondingly, progressive melting of the secondary crystallites with increasing temperature does not affect the network mesh size but only the amount of network defects, and melting of the main PVA crystallites at approximately 80 degrees C leads to the destruction of the network gel and the formation of an isotropic PVA solution.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were employed to study the influence of solvents on the structure and mechanical properties of physically crosslinked poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) gels. Firstly, three kinds of PVA precursor gels were made by adding water, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and a mixture of DMSO and water (4:1 by weight), respectively. The solvents in the precursor gels were then exchanged with water to obtain three kinds of PVA hydrogels. Solvent in the precursor gel with a mixture of DMSO and water was also exchanged with ethanol and DMSO, respectively. It was found that the tensile strength and failure strain of the PVA hydrogel prepared from precursor gel with a mixture of DMSO and water was the highest, and the polymer network was more homogeneous than the other two PVA hydrogels. The polymer network of PVA gel with ethanol or with DMSO was more heterogenous than with water, and the tensile strength and failure strain were much lower. The torsional activity of polymer chains of PVA gel with ethanol was much stronger than PVA gel with water and DMSO.

Abstract:The structural dependence of nonlinear optical properties associated with ADP-doped PVA/PVP polymer composites is discussed in this work. Polymer composites are fabricated using the solution casting method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to perform structural analysis on these samples whose average crystallite size increases with an increase in dopant concentration. Results from UVâ€“Visâ€“NIR spectra show that the samples are transparent in the IR region. The Z-scan technique was established by following the method described by Sheik-Bahae etÂ al. The shape of the open aperture plot suggests that the samples exhibit two-photon absorption. The NLO properties such as nonlinear absorption coefficient ( Î2) , two-photon absorption cross-section ( Ïƒ2) and the imaginary part of third-order nonlinear susceptibility (Ï‡(3)) were investigated at 1064Â nm and these values were found to be in the order of âˆ1⁄410âˆ’7 W/cm, âˆ1⁄410âˆ’20 cm 4 /GW and âˆ1⁄410âˆ’14 esu, respectively. The open aperture Z-scan method yielded optical limiting data, from which the optical limiting threshold was calculated to be in the order of âˆ1⁄41013 W/m 2 . Functional data analysis uses a suitable basis representation to assess the functional correlation between global and local variables.
