Abstract:Porous crystalline conjugated macrocyclic materials (CMMs) possess high porosity, tunable structure/function and efficient charge transport ability owing to their planar macrocyclic conjugated pi-electron system, which make them promising candidates for applications in energy storage. In this review, we thoroughly summarize the timely development of porous crystalline CMMs in energy storage related fields. Specifically, we summarize and discuss their structures and properties. In addition, their energy storage applications, such as lithium ion batteries, lithium sulfur batteries, sodium ion batteries, potassium ion batteries, Li-CO2 batteries, Li-O2 batteries, Zn-air batteries, supercapacitors and triboelectric nanogenerators, are also discussed. Finally, we present the existing challenges and future prospects. We hope this review will inspire the development of advanced energy storage materials based on porous crystalline CMMs. This review provides a summary on the recent progress of porous crystalline conjugated macrocyclic materials in energy storage applications.

Abstract:Carbon peaking and carbon neutralization trigger a technical revolution in energy & environment related fields. Development of new technologies for green energy production and storage, industrial energy saving and efficiency reinforcement, carbon capture, and pollutant gas treatment is in highly imperious demand. The emerging porous framework materials such as metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs), owing to the permanent porosity, tremendous specific surface area, designable structure and customizable functionality, have shown great potential in major energy-consuming industrial processes, including sustainable energy gas catalytic conversion, energy-efficient industrial gas separation and storage. Herein, this manuscript presents a systematic review of porous framework materials for global and comprehensive energy & environment related applications, from a macroscopic and application perspective.

Abstract:Due to their unique structure and properties as well as promising applications, porous two-dimensional (2D) materials, such as graphene, boron nitride, metal chalcogenides, carbon nitride, and metal oxides, have attracted extensive attention in the past few years. Combining the advantages of both 2D materials and porous structure, the fabricated porous 2D materials have presented the features of large surface areas, diversified compositions, and enhanced electronic conductivity, which endow them high potentials to act as defining components in high-performance electrochemical energy storage and conversion devices, such as lithium-ion batteries, sodium-ion batteries, supercapacitors, and fuel cells. In this review, we demonstrated the fabrication of various porous 2D materials by using several typical techniques like surface treatment, self-assembly, vacuum filtration, template-based, and template-free synthesis. In another way, their potential applications in energy sciences and the main challenges were introduced and discussed. It is expected that this work will be helpful for understanding the effects of material structure on its electrochemical performances in one way, and in another way will guide the design and fabrication of novel porous 2D structured materials for energy, electronic, and biomaterial applications.

Abstract:Graphene, being a two-dimensionally all-aromatic sheet bonded with sp2 carbon atoms has attracted much attention due to its excellent physicochemical properties like large surface area, good electrical conductivity, high thermal and chemical stability. Since the discovery of graphene, various efforts have been made to modify its structural properties for integrating this novel material in various electronics, fuel cells, and other energy storage applications. Furthermore, this modification led to the production of different graphene-based nanomaterials and one of these derivatives of graphitic material is porous graphene. The advantage of using porous graphene in energy systems is that it has the properties of both porous material and graphene. Thus, various synthesis approaches are the major challenge in order to improve the electrochemical performance of porous graphene. In this review, the recent advancement in porous graphene-based electrode materials and their structural properties in relation to electrochemical energy storage systems are discussed.

Abstract:Combining the advantages from both porous materials and graphene, porous graphene materials have attracted vast interests due to their large surface areas, unique porous structures, diversified compositions and excellent electronic conductivity. These unordinary features enable porous graphene materials to serve as key components in high-performance electrochemical energy storage and conversion devices such as lithium ion batteries, supercapacitors, and fuel cells. This progress report summarizes the typical fabrication methods for porous graphene materials with micro-, meso-, and macro-porous structures. Abstract:Porous carbons are widely used in the field of electrochemical energy storage due to their light weight, large specific surface area, high electronic conductivity and structural stability. Over the past decades, the construction and functionalization of porous carbons have seen great progress. This review summarizes progress in the use of porous carbons in different energy storage devices, such as lithium-ion, lithium-oxygen, lithium-sulfur, and lithium-metal batteries for anode protection, sodium-ion and potassium-ion batteries, supercapacitors and metal ion capacitors. Methods for the synthesis and functionalization of porous carbons are discussed and the effects of their pore texture on the electrochemical performance of different energy storage systems are outlined. Strategies for their structural control are proposed, and the challenges and prospects for their use in energy storage devices are discussed.

Abstract:To meet the growing demand in energy, great efforts have been devoted to improving the performances of energy–storages. Graphene, a remarkable two-dimensional (2D) material, holds immense potential for improving energy–storage performance owing to its exceptional properties, such as a large-specific surface area, remarkable thermal conductivity, excellent mechanical strength, and high-electronic mobility. This review provides a comprehensive summary of recent research advancements in the application of graphene for energy–storage. Initially, the fundamental properties of graphene are introduced. Subsequently, the latest developments in graphene-based energy–storage, encompassing lithium-ion batteries, sodium-ion batteries, supercapacitors, potassium-ion batteries and aluminum-ion batteries, are summarized. Finally, the challenges associated with graphene-based energy–storage applications are discussed, and the development prospects for this field are outlined.

Abstract:The anisotropic nature of 'graphenic' nanosheets enables them to form stable three-dimensional porous materials. The use of these porous structures has been explored in several applications including electronics and batteries, environmental remediation, energy storage, sensors, catalysis, tissue engineering, and many more. As method of fabrication greatly influences the final pore architecture, and chemical and mechanical characteristics and performance of these porous materials, it is essential to identify and address the correlation between property and function. In this review, we report detailed analyses of the different methods of fabricating porous graphene-based structures - with a focus on graphene oxide as the base material - and relate these with the resultant morphologies, mechanical responses, and common applications of use. We discuss the feasibility of the synthesis approaches and relate the GO concentrations used in each methodology against their corresponding pore sizes to identify the areas not explored to date.

Abstract:The dramatic environmental pollution and energy shortages have spurred internationally unprecedented interest in developing new energy technologies.Supercapacitors have emerged as a new class of green electrochemical devices for energy conversion and storage and are promising candidates for extensive applications.As a key component of supercapacitors,electrode materials are a crucial factor to the electrochemical performance based on its properties including surface area,pore structure,conductivity and surface functionalization.The well-designed synthesis strategies and conditions are usually fatal to tailor four mentioned properties.Due to the advantages of low cost,high specific surface area and conductivity,controllable microstructure,easy surface functionalization,remarkable chemical stability and outstanding electrolyte ion accessibility,porous carbon materials tailored through well-designed synthesis strategies and conditions,exhibit high energy density and power density as well as superb electrochemical cycling stability.In this review,we firstly provide a brief description of energy storage mechanisms for different types of electrode materials,followed by a comprehensive overview of recent advances in development of different carbon-based materials with activated carbon,carbon aerogels,carbon fiber,mesoporous carbon,carbon nanotube and graphene.Then we state the key parameters to evaluate the electrochemical properties,such as specific capacitance,energy density and power density,and also discuss the relationship between the influence parameters (e.g.surface area,pore structure,conductivity,and surface properties) and enhanced performances.Further,according to the research work of our group,we present a summary on the design,synthesis and applications in energy conversion and storage based on porous carbon materials,including carbons with different pore distributions (hierarchical porous carbon,porous carbon sphere,ultramicroporous carbon),functionalized porous carbon and porous carbon composite materials.In terms of carbons with different pore distributions,we list some characteristic synthetic methods (e.g.the self-template strategy for banana-peel-derived hierarchical porous carbon foams,the seeded synthetic strategy for phenolic-resin-derived porous carbon nanospheres and the solvothermal method for phloroglucinol-terephthaldehyde-derived ultramicroporous carbon nanoparticles),which can be concluded that micropores (especially ultramicropores) are electrochemically available for electrolyte ions because the solvation shell is squeezed through the pores less than the solvated ion size and such distortion reduces distance between the electrode surface and the ion center,while mesopores offer highly efficient pore channels for ion penetration and transport.In terms of functionalized porous carbon,we adopt the in situ synthesis approach to prepare nitrogen-doped carbons (e.g.poly(1,5-diaminonapthalene)-derived nitrogen-containing carbon microspheres and phenylenediamine-terephthalaldehyde-derived nitrogen-functionalized microporous carbon nanoparticles),which demonstrate that heteroatom doping,on the one hand,increases the surface wettability in the aqueous electrolyte to improve the mass transfer efficiency,and on the other hand,endows additional psedocapacitance for the electrode.In terms of porous carbon composite materials,we combine carbon-based materials with pseudocapacitive metal oxides (e.g.NiO and MnO2) for achieving high-performance supercapacitors,which is a wise choice to increase the energy density without sacrificing the high power capability.These strategies and methods provide new ideas to simple and highly efficient design of porous carbon materials and may be extendable to other systems such as metal or metal oxide materials.Additionally,the future trend of carbon based electrode materials for energy conversion and storage device is discussed.There are extensive applications outside the area of high-rate electrochemical energy storage,such as drug delivery,photonic crystals,adsorption and separation,and catalysis.

Abstract:Graphene attracts more and more scientists and researchers owing to its superior electronic, thermal, and mechanical properties. For material scientists, graphene is a kind of versatile building blocks, and considerable progress has been made in recent years. Graphene-based hybrid materials have been prepared by incorporating inorganic species and/or cross-linking of organic species through covalent and/or noncovalent interactions. The graphene-based hybrid materials show improved or excellent performance in various fields. In this review, we summarize the synthesis of graphene and graphene-based hybrid materials, and their applications in energy storage and conversion.

Abstract:Owing to the environmental friendliness, renewability, and biodegradability of biomass, tremendous efforts have been devoted to use them as promising carbon precursors in sustainable energy storage devices. Biomass-based porous graphitic carbon (BPGC), possessing both large specific surface area and good conductivity, has received particular attention as an electrode material in supercapacitors. Herein, this review summarizes the latest progress toward the preparation methods of BPGC, which include activation, catalytic graphitization, and simultaneous activation–graphitization, and special attention is given to the mechanisms of structure evolution during activation and graphitization. The review also presents the advances for optimizing and restructuring the microstructure of BPGC from 0D to 3D. Besides, structure–performance correlation of BPGC for supercapacitor is presented and discussed. Furthermore, insights into challenges and opportunities for the further development of BPGC for energy storage are pointed out. Overall, this review will not only help researchers choose appropriate method to construct BPGC, but also open various directions to optimize ions and electrons transport for high-performance energy storage devices.

Abstract:Graphene-based materials have shown great potential in various fields across physics, chemistry, biology, and electronics, due to their unique electronic properties, facile synthesis, and ease of functionalization. In this review, we summarize the significant advances in tailored graphene systems for the recently developed unconventional energy conversion and storage devices reported by our group and others, namely focused on their tunable and controllable preparation and remarkable applications in new types of supercapacitors, lithium ion batteries, photovoltaic cells, and other emerging generators. This featured article also highlights the working principles and outlines the problems hindering the practical applications of graphene-based materials in these energy-related devices. Future research trends towards new methodologies in the design and synthesis of graphene-based systems with unique properties for emerging energy storage and energy conversion devices are also proposed.

Abstract:Graphene, reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and derived materials have emerged as promising solutions for applications in renewable energy storage/conversion devices. No alternatives are known to simultaneously exhibit large specific surface area, high electrical conductivity, good chemical stability, high mechanical strength and flexibility. This review article is a collection of some of the most relevant research efforts published in the last few years focusing on the synthesis and modification of graphene/rGO as well as doped and hybrid bi-dimensional carbon materials. For research on graphene growth, the choice of precursor and physical state (gas, solid or liquid) has been proved to be as important as the environment and synthesis approach. On the other hand, research focused on graphene oxide reduction has relied on the development of simple and efficient techniques for rGO conversion and device structuring. Modifications applied to graphene (during synthesis) or rGO (during reduction) have included doping, decoration with nanoparticles and the formation of composite microstructures. Fabrication of electrodes based on graphene/rGO for application in energy storage and conversion has been reported, including relevant performance data from real devices (supercapacitors, lithium ion batteries, fuel cells or solar cells). This review concludes with a brief discussion of some of the possible directions for promising research in the area of graphene/rGO fabrication for energy conversion and storage devices.

Abstract:2D graphene materials possess excellent electrical conductivity and an sp(2) carbon atom structure and can be applied in light and electric energy storage and conversion applications. However, traditional methods of graphene preparation cannot keep pace with real-time synthesis, and therefore, novel graphene synthesis approaches have attracted increasing attention from researchers to accurately control graphene structure and morphology. Based on this, this review will discuss the novel synthesis of graphene for interdisciplinary applications of energy storage and conversion, which is a promising direction in the research for novel applications in photoelectrochemical cells, photo-assisted batteries, piezoelectric nanogenerators, photothermal and photomechanical devices, etc.

Abstract:This review summarizes the types of defects causing the pore structure and emphasizes various preparation strategies on constructing 2D and 3D porous graphene with high specific surface area, excellent mechanical stability, and superior electrical conductivity. Moreover, the applications of 2D and 3D porous graphene in molecular sieve, sensor and supercapacitor are introduced. Porous graphene, including 2D and 3D porous graphene, is widely researched recently. One of the most attractive features is the proper utilization of graphene defects, which combine the advantages of both graphene and porous materials, greatly enriching the applications of porous graphene in biology, chemistry, electronics, and other fields. In this review, the defects of graphene are first discussed to provide a comprehensive understanding of porous graphene. Then, the latest advancements in the preparation of 2D and 3D porous graphene are presented. The pros and cons of these preparation methods are discussed in detail, providing a direction for the fabrication of porous graphene. Moreover, various superior properties of porous graphene are described, laying the foundation for their promising applications. Owing to its abundant morphology, wide distribution of pore size, and remarkable properties benefited from porous structure, porous graphene can not only promote molecular diffusion and electron transfer but also expose more active sites. Consequently, a serious of applications containing gas sieving, liquid separation, sensors, and supercapacitors, are presented. Finally, the challenges confronted during preparation and characterization of porous graphene are discussed, offering guidance for the future development of porous graphene in fabrication, characterization, properties, and applications.

Abstract:Graphene, a one-atom layer of graphite, possesses a unique two-dimensional (2D) structure, high conductivity and charge carrier mobility, huge specific surface area, high transparency and great mechanical strength. Thus, it is expected to be an ideal material for energy storage and conversion. During the past several years, a variety of graphene based materials (GBMs) have been successfully prepared and applied in supercapacitors, lithium ion batteries, water splitting, electrocatalysts for fuel cells, and solar cells. In this review, we will summarize the recent advances in the synthesis and applications of GBMs in these energy related systems. The challenges and prospects of graphene based new energy materials are also discussed.
