Abstract:Although graphene oxide (GO) has been used in many applications to improve human life quality, its environmental fate and behavior are still largely unknown. In this work, a novel approach that combines experimental measurements and theoretical calculations was used to determine the aggregation kinetics of GO sheets in aqueous solutions under different chemistry conditions (e.g., cation valence and pH). Experimental data showed that both cation valence and pH showed significant effect on the aggregation of GO sheets. The measured critical coagulation concentrations were in good agreement with the predictions of the extended Schulze-Hardy rule. Ca(2+) and Mg(2+) were more effective than Na(+) in aggregating the GO sheets, which could be attributed to the cross-linking between GO sheets by the divalent cations through "bridging" the functional groups at the edges of the GO sheets. When solution pH increases, deprotonation of carboxylic groups was found to play a key role in increasing GO sheet stability and surface charge development. These results suggested that edge-to-edge and face-to-face interactions were the dominant modes of GO aggregation in the presence of divalent metal ions and H(+), respectively. A modified attachment efficiency (α) model was developed on the basis of the Maxwell approach with considerations of both primary and secondary minima. The model predictions matched the experimental measurements of the aggregation kinetics of GO sheets in aqueous solutions under all of the tested experimental conditions well.

Abstract:Numerous applications of graphene oxide (GO) thin films have emerged after the discovery of their intriguing electrical, mechanical, and thermal properties. Function and performance of such GO films tend to depend on their homogeneity, morphology, and nanostructure, which are influenced by their deposition kinetics. This study investigates the kinetics of GO deposition on substrates of systematically varying surface potentials via systematic quartz crystal micro balance with dissipation and atomic force microscopy techniques. While the substrates with a positive surface potential yielded high deposition rates but wrinkled GO films, the substrates with a negative surface potential lead to low deposition rates but smooth GO films. For the repulsive interactions, the deposition rate was found to roughly exponentially decay with the product of surface potentials of GO and the substrate. Also, building upon the Gouy-Chapman theory and the additivity of van der Waals interactions, expressions for electrostatic double-layer and van der Waals interactions between a nanoplatelet (e.g., GO) and a planar wall under parallel, perpendicular, and inclined configurations were derived to explain the observed deposition trends. We anticipate that these findings will provide useful guidelines for manipulating and controlling the aqueous deposition of GO and structural properties of resultant GO films.

Abstract:To assess the environmental behavior and impact of graphene oxide (GO) on living organisms more accurately, the aggregation of GO and its deposition on Al2O3 particles were systematically investigated using batch experiments across a wide range of solution chemistries. The results indicated that the aggregation of GO and its deposition on Al2O3 depended on the solution pH and the types and concentrations of electrolytes. MgCl2 and CaCl2 destabilized GO because of their effective charge screening and neutralization, and the presence of NaH2PO4 and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) improved the stability of GO with the increase in pH values as a result of electrostatic interactions and steric repulsion. Specifically, the dissolution of Al2O3 contributed to GO aggregation at relatively low pH or high pH values. Results from this study provide critical information for predicting the fate of GO in aquatic-terrestrial transition zones, where aluminum (hydro)oxides are present.

Abstract:Graphene-based material has attracted extensive attention from both experimental and theoretical scientific communities due to its extraordinary properties. As a derivative of graphene, graphene oxide has also become an attractive material and been investigated widely in many areas since the ease of synthesizing graphene oxide and its solution processability. In this paper, we prepared graphene oxide by the modified Hummers method. The hydrophilicity of graphene oxide with different particle sizes and pH values was characterized with water contact angle. And we find the water contact angle of the different graphene oxides decreases from 61.8° to 11.6°, which indicates graphene oxide has the excellent hydrophilicity. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, zeta potential and dynamic light scattering measurements were taken to study the chemical state of elements and the performances of graphene oxide in this experiment. The results show the hydrophilicity of graphene oxide is sensitive to particle size and pH value, which result in the variations of the ionizable groups of graphene oxide. Our work provides a simple ways to control the hydrophilicity of graphene oxide by adjusting particle size and pH value.

Abstract:The cooperative effects of pH and electrolytes on the aggregation of GQDs and the aggregate morphologies are characterized. Because GQDs have an average size of 9 nm with abundant O-functionalized edges, their suspension was very stable even in a high electrolyte concentration and low pH solution. Divalent cations (Mg2+ and Ca2+) excelled at aggregating the GQD nanoplates, while monovalent cations (Na+ and K+) did not disturb the stability. For Na+ and K+, positive linear correlations were observed between the critical coagulation concentration (CCC) and pH levels. For Mg2+ and Ca2+, negative, but nonlinear, correlations between CCC and pH values could not be explained and predicted by the traditional DLVO theory. Three-step mechanisms are proposed for the first time to elucidate the complex aggregation of GQDs. The first step is the protonation/deprotonation of GQDs under different pH values and the self-assembly of GQDs into GQD-water-GQD. The second step is the self-assembly of small GQD pieces into large plates (graphene oxide-like) induced by the coexisting Ca2+ and then conversion into 3D structures via π-π stacking. The third step is the aggregation of the 3D-assembled GQDs into precipitates via the suppression of the electric double layer. The self-assembly of GQDs prior to aggregation was supported by SEM and HRTEM imaging. Understanding of the colloidal behavior of ultrasmall nanoparticles like GQDs is significantly important for the precise prediction of their environmental fate and risk.

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO), as a typical two-dimensional material, possesses a range of oxygen-containing groups and shows surfactant and/or polyelectrolyte-like characteristics. Herein, GO sheets with narrow size distribution were prepared by an ultracentrifugation-based process and the aggregation behaviour of GO in pure water and an electrolyte aqueous solution were studied using laser light scattering (LLS). When adding common electrolytes, such as NaCl and MgCl2, into the GO dispersions, aggregation occurs and irreversible coagulation eventually occurs too. However, the GO dispersion can still remain stable when adding excess AlCl3. The zeta potential of the GO dispersion changes from negative to positive after the addition of access AlCl3, indicating that electrostatic repulsion is still responsible for the dispersion of GO, which is in good agreement with the LLS results. This finding on the dispersion of GO may be applied in the solution processing of GO. It also expands the scope of the design and preparation of new GO-based hybrid materials with different functions.

Abstract:The colloidal behavior of graphene oxide (GO) has been extensively studied in the presence of common environmental cations, but the aggregation, adsorption, and morphological transformation of GO under heavy metal ions have not been investigated. We observed that heavy metal cations (Cr3+, Pb2+, Cu2+, Cd2+, Ag+) destabilized GO suspension more aggressively than common cations (Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+). In addition to electric double-layer (EDL) suppression, heavy metal cations can easily cross the EDL, bind to GO surface, and then change the surface potential, which is a more efficient pathway for GO aggregation. According to aggregation kinetics, the destabilizing ability of cations follows the order of Cr3+ >> Pb2+ > Cu2+ > Cd2+ > Ca2+ > Mg2+ >> Ag+ > K+ > Na+. The destabilizing capability of metal cations is consistent with their adsorption affinity with GO, which is determined by their electronegativity and hydration shell thickness. GO nanosheets can be transformed to 1D tube-like carbon material, 2D multiple overlapped GO plane, and 3D sphere-like particles during aggregation, thereby combined to form a sphere-like aggregated GO, which is for the first time observed by TEM and AFM images. Therefore, the aggregation of GO 2D nanosheets follows the Schulze-Hardy rule, which is usually used for spherical particles. An integrative process of adsorption-transformation-aggregation is proposed to better understand the nanomaterial (e.g., GO) colloidal behavior, environmental risk, self-assembly process, and application as a novel adsorbent.
Aggregation of graphene oxide upon the stripping of oxidized debris: An experimental and molecular dynamics simulation study

Abstract:The most recent structural study of graphene oxide (GO) indicates that the oxidized debris (ODs) adhered to as-prepared GO will strip in certain aquatic settings. The impact of ODs stripping on the characteristics of GO has been widely reported, but its effects on GO aggregation have received less attention. Here, the influence of OD stripping on the GO aggregation property was identified, and the aggregation of as-prepared GO and GO upon OD stripping was compared. Upon ODs stripping, the pKa values of GO shifted from 3.91, 6.25, and 9.84 to 4.54, 6.65, and 10.21, respectively. Further analysis indicated the removal of ODs reduced the net negative charge and improved the hydrophobicity of GO, hence promoting the aggregation of GO. The acceleration of GO-Ca2+-OD aggregate formation was facilitated by the collective effects of ODs stripping, functional group deprotonation, double layer compression, OD bridging, and charge neutralization. The metal ions and stripped ODs attach to GO edges and link GO, which perform like bridges and contribute to further aggregation. In general, the existence of ODs adds complexity to the constructions and characteristics of GO, and it is important to take this into account while evaluating the aggregation characteristic of GO-based materials.

Abstract:We report on an extensive molecular simulations study about the influence of the nature of functional groups and anion size on the charging mechanisms and volume expansion/contraction in layered materials used as electrodes for energy storage applications. The study of the electrochemical behavior of graphene and Ti3C2 MXene (with three different functional groups) in five ionic liquids shows that the electrodes expand when charged negatively and no major dependence on the anion type is observed. When the electrode is positively charged, the volume changes are more complex and no specific trend could be observed depending on the anion size. The volume changes are in most cases, very well explained by the quantities of adsorbed ions. In specific cases, e.g., for FSI- and TFSI- anions, the reorientation of the ions can also affect the interlayer volume. We demonstrate that the charging mechanisms are changing consistently with the anion sizes and are largely correlated with the surface charge of the electrode material in the neutral state.

Abstract:Abstract Although graphene oxide (GO) has been used in multidisciplinary areas due to its excellent physicochemical properties, its environmental behavior and fate are still largely unclear. In this study, batch experiments, spectroscopy analysis and theoretical calculations were addressed to promote a more comprehensive understanding toward the coagulation behavior of GO onto TiO 2 under various environmental conditions (pH, co-existing ions, temperature, etc.). The results indicated that neutral pH was beneficial to the removal of GO due to the electrostatic interaction. The presence of cations accelerated GO coagulation significantly owing to the influence of electrical double layer compression. On the contrary, the presence of anions improved the stability of GO primarily because of electrostatic repulsion and steric hindrance. Results of XRD, FTIR and XPS analysis indicated that the coagulation of GO on TiO 2 was mainly dominated by electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonds, which were further evidenced by DFT calculations. The high binding energy further indicated the stability of GO + TiO 2 system, suggesting that TiO 2 can be used as an effective coagulant for the efficient elimination and coagulation of GO from aqueous solutions. These findings might likely lead to a better understanding of the migration and transformation of carbon nanomaterials in the natural environment.

Principles governing control of aggregation and dispersion of aqueous graphene oxide

Abstract:Controlling the structure of graphene oxide (GO) phases and their smaller analogues, graphene (oxide) quantum dots (GOQDs), is vitally important for any of their widespread intended applications: highly ordered arrangements of nanoparticles for thin-film or membrane applications of GO, dispersed nanoparticles for composite materials and three-dimensional porous arrangements for hydrogels. In aqueous environments, it is not only the chemical composition of the GO flakes that determines their morphologies; external factors such as pH and the coexisting cations also influence the structures formed. By using accurate models of GO that capture the heterogeneity of surface oxidation and very large-scale coarse-grained molecular dynamics that can simulate the behaviour of GO at realistic sizes of GOQDs, the driving forces that lead to the various morphologies in aqueous solution are resolved. We find the morphologies are determined by a complex interplay between electrostatic, [Formula: see text]-[Formula: see text] and hydrogen bonding interactions. Assembled morphologies can be controlled by changing the degree of oxidation and the pH. In acidic aqueous solution, the GO flakes vary from fully aggregated over graphitic domains to partial aggregation via hydrogen bonding between hydroxylated domains, leading to the formation of planar extended flakes at high oxidation ratios and stacks at low oxidation ratios. At high pH, where the edge carboxylic acid groups are deprotonated, electrostatic repulsion leads to more dispersion, but a variety of aggregation behaviour is surprisingly still observed: over graphitic regions, via hydrogen bonding and "face-edge" interactions. Calcium ions cause additional aggregation, with a greater number of "face-face" and "edge-edge" aggregation mechanisms, leading to irregular aggregated structures. "Face-face" aggregation mechanisms are enhanced by the GO flakes possessing distinct domains of hydroxylated and graphitic regions, with [Formula: see text]-[Formula: see text] and hydrogen bonding interactions prevalent between these regions on aggregated flakes respectively. These findings furnish explanations for the aggregation characteristics of GO and GOQDs, and provide computational methods to design directed synthesis routes for self-assembled and associated applications.

Abstract:The size and surface chemistry of graphene oxide (GO) dispersed in an aqueous solution are tuned by adjusting the pH value of the parent GO hydrosol. This method is based on the protonation of the carboxyl groups on GO nanosheets (GONs) in an acidic environment and the partial removal of oxygen-containing functional groups in strong basic conditions. GONs with a high electrochemical activity can be obtained by tuning the pH-dependent sheet sizes and the fraction of functional groups. It is found that the functional groups of a GON are more crucial in providing a high electrochemical activity than are the plane edges, and the size of a GON is also a key factor to influence the chemical activity. GONs with smaller sheet sizes but similar functional groups show a weaker electrochemical activity than those with larger sizes. In addition, GONs possess a high activity towards H2O2 detection and hence are promising for use as an electrode of biosensors.

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) can be aggregated by Cu2+ in aqueous solution with a huge Cu2+ absorption capacity. The Cu2+ causes GO sheets to be folded and also to form large aggregates that were characterized by confocal microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The folding/aggregation is most likely triggered by the coordination between GO and Cu2+. The equilibrium Cu2+ concentrations and equilibrium absorption capacity of GO were measured to estimate the maximum absorption capacity of GO for Cu2+ and the absorption model. GO has a huge absorption capacity for Cu2+, which is around 10 times of that of active carbon. Representative results are presented and the implication to Cu2+ removal is discussed.

Abstract:In this study, we comprehensively and critically discuss the aggregation mechanism of commercial graphene oxide (CGO) in surface aquatic environments. The aggregation kinetics and critical coagulation concentration of CGO were obtained through time-resolved dynamic light scattering and batch techniques over a wide range of water types. By employing transmission electron microscopy and elemental mapping, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, we studied the effects of cations in natural waters on the microstructure transformation, element content and distribution, and oxygen-containing functional group vibrations of CGO. The aggregation of CGO in natural water is induced mainly by Ca2+ by complexing; Na+, with a higher concentration, plays a more important role than Mg2+ in inducing aggregation via electric double layer suppression. Ca2+ mainly interacts with C - COOH, while Mg2+ has a greater effect on C - OH. Na+ has less effect on the oxygen-containing functional group but decreases the C/O ratio in contrast with Mg2+/Ca2+/natural water, indicating the different inducing mechanisms. This study looks forward to providing pivotal knowledge to predict the environmental fate of CGO more accurately in natural surface water.

Abstract:The aggregation kinetics of TiO2–graphene nanocomposites in aqueous solution affected by solution pH, salt types (NaCl, CaCl2) and concentrations of electrolytes, and stability induced by UV irradiation was investigated in this study. The zeta potentials and hydrodynamic diameter of the nanoparticles were used as bases to assess the aggregation behavior, and stability of nanocomposites exposed to UV irradiation was expressed in terms of supernatant concentration. The aggregation of TiO2–graphene nanoparticles in aqueous media followed the colloidal theory. TiO2–graphene nanoparticles were significantly aggregated in the presence of a diavalent cation compared with monovalent cation because the former was more capable of effective charge screening and neutralization. The calculated Hamaker constant of the TiO2–graphene nanocomposites in aqueous solution prepared in the lab was 2.31×10−20J. The stability of this composite nanoparticles was between those of pure TiO2 and graphene. A known intensity of UV irradiation was beneficial in the formation of TiO2–graphene nanoparticle aggregates. However, prolonged UV irradiation may stabilize the nanoparticles. These results provided critical information about the colloidal properties of the new TiO2–graphene nanocomposites and were useful in predicting the fate and transport of TiO2–graphene nanocomposites in natural water environments.
Do specific ion effects influence the physical chemistry of aqueous graphene-based supercapacitors? Perspectives from multiscale QMMD simulations

Abstract:Whether or not specific ion effects determine the charge storage properties of aqueous graphene and graphite-based supercapacitors remains a highly debated topic. In this work we present a multiscale quantum mechanics – classical molecular dynamics (QMMD) investigation of aqueous mono- and divalent salt electrolytes in contact with fully polarizable charged graphene sheets. By computing both the electrochemical double layer (EDL) and quantum capacitance we observe a constant electrode specific capacitance with cationic radii and charge. Counterintuitively, we determine that a switch in the cation adsorption mechanism from inner to outer Helmholtz layers leads to negligible changes to the EDL capacitance, this appears to be due to the robust electronic structure of the graphene electrodes. However, the ability of ions (such as K+) with a relatively low hydration free energy to penetrate the inner Helmholtz plane and adsorb directly on the electrode surface is found to slow their diffusion parallel to the interface. Ions in the outer Helmholtz layer are found to have higher diffusivity at the surface due to their position in ion channels between water layers. Our results show that surface effects such as the surface polarization and the partial dehydration and local structuring of ions on the surface underpin the behaviour of cations at the interface and add a vital new perspective on trends in ion mobilities seen under confinement.

Abstract:A modified Hummer's method was used to synthesize aqueous dispersions of graphene oxide (GO). The morphology, chemical structure, and exfoliation state of GO were analyzed by combining scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The structural and rheological properties of the GO dispersions were studied as a function of GO concentration and pH. Increasing the concentration of GO revealed shorter interparticle distances between GO sheets. This induced a transition from fluid to nematic gel-like structures, as observed by polarized optical microscopy (POM). The Herschel-Bulkley model was used to fit the shear thinning curves and to demonstrate the viscoelastic behavior. Both the yield stress and viscoelastic moduli in the linear viscoelastic regime increased. As pH increases, the color of the aqueous GO dispersions becomes darker, the negative values of the zeta potential increase, the distances between the GO sheets decrease as observed by a slight shift of the correlation peak toward higher values of the scattering vector modulus in small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and the rheological properties (yield stress and viscoelastic moduli in the linear viscoelastic region) decrease. These results can be explained by a change in the morphology of GO related to their hydrophilicity. This work presents relationships between rheological and structural properties of GO sheet dispersions, with particular emphasis on the effects of concentration and pH.

Abstract:The most suitable electrolyte for graphene oxide synthesis, in terms of both production efficiency and quality, using the electrochemical exfoliation technique has been investigated and reported in this study. Simultaneous anodic and cathodic graphene oxide production using ten (10) different electrolytes, including acids (H2SO4, HCl, HNO3), bases (KOH, Ca(OH)2, Mg(OH)2, NaOH), and salts (NaCl, (NH4)2SO4, K2SO4), was studied under the same experimental conditions of bias voltage, graphite nature, exfoliation time, electrolyte molarity, and post-exfoliation treatments. Assessment of the graphene oxide structures and production rates was supported using Raman spectroscopy, high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (HRSEM), and EDS (energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy), attached to the scanning electron microscope. Analysis of the results obtained reveals that H2SO4 showed the highest graphene oxide yield (86%) but with comparably low graphene oxide quality in terms of defect concentration, presence of oxygen functional group contamination, and crystallite properties. The aqueous NaCl, Ca(OH)2 and Mg(OH)2 electrolytes did not show any graphene oxide exfoliation effect. However, from the series of electrolytes examined, aqueous (NH4)2SO4 exhibited an excellent combination of efficient graphene oxide yield and high-quality characteristics due to its relatively high yield of 74% and superior quality of the produced graphene oxide with the comparatively lowest defect density, ?D, and highest C/O (carbon-to-oxygen) ratio. The tortuous, agglomerated, and planar layers of the distinct 2D graphene oxide sheets were also clearly revealed by the SEM images. In essence, the roles played by dissociated sulfate (SO42?), nitrate (NO32?), chlorides (Cl?), and hydroxides (OH?) ions in the series of complex electrochemical reactions toward the intercalation, exfoliation, yield, and properties of graphene oxide produced are discussed. From the series of electrolytes tested, aqueous (NH4)2SO4 emerged as the most relatively suitable electrolyte for the synthesis of graphene oxide because it combines both high yield and fine quality.
