Abstract:We have studied the formation and growth of solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) for the case of ethylene carbonate (EC), dimethyl carbonate (DMC) and mixtures of these electrolytes using molecular dynamics simulations. We have considered SEI growth on both Li metal surfaces and using a simulation framework that allows us to vary the Li surface density on the anode surface. Using our simulations we have obtained the detailed structure and distribution of different constituents in the SEI as a function of the distance from the anode surfaces. We find that SEI films formed in the presence of EC are rich in Li2CO3 and Li2O, while LiOCH3 is the primary constituent of DMC films. We find that dilithium ethylene dicarbonate, LiEDC, is formed in the presence of EC at low Li surface densities, but it quickly decomposes to inorganic salts during subsequent growth in Li rich environments. The surface films formed in our simulations have a multilayer structure with regions rich in inorganic and organic salts located near the anode surface and the electrolyte interface, respectively, in agreement with depth profiling experiments. Our computed formation potentials 1.0V vs. Li/Li+ is also in excellent accord with experimental measurements. We have also calculated the elastic stiffness of the SEI films; we find that they are significantly stiffer than Li metal, but are somewhat more compliant compared to the graphite anode.

Abstract:The thermal behavior during operation of Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is widely concerned with respect to their electrochemical performance and safety. The solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is a critical layer formed during electrochemical reactions in LIBs. A thorough understanding of SEI's thermal transport properties is essential to identify limitations within the internal heat transfer of LIBs. In this work, a computational study of the thermal transport through SEI was performed based on classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Three representative inorganic components of SEI, namely Li2CO3, Li2O and LiF, were explored. First, the force fields were evaluated for accurate MD simulations. Subsequently, the impact of structural properties and temperatures on the thermal conductivities of SEI were investigated, followed by discussion on radial distribution functions and vibrational density of states. It was found that the comparison of thermal conductivity of the ordered crystals is Li2O > LiF > Li2CO3. As temperature increases, the thermal conductivity of inorganic components decreases significantly. Additionally, it was discovered that the thermal conductivity of amorphous compounds is notably lower than that of ideal crystals and is closely related to the molar ratio of inorganic components. The results of this work can help understand the thermal transport properties of SEI and offer valuable insights for the design of electrolytes and SEI toward improving the thermal safety performance of LIBs.

Abstract:The solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) forms during the initial cycles in lithium ion batteries and evolves throughout the battery life. By protecting the electrode and passing lithium ions, the SEI plays an important role in the performance and degradation of lithium ion batteries. Identifying how the SEI forms and evolves during battery cycling helps us understand and mitigate battery degradation. In this work, we address the SEI chemical and electrochemical evolution during its formation process and provide a correlation between these properties. It is found that the SEI chemistry, not just its thickness, has a distinct influence on its impedance, which may ultimately impact the battery performance.

Abstract:Solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) functions as more than an ion transporter and electron insulater. SEIs "catch" Li+ at the electrolyte/SEI interface and "hand out" Li+ at SEI/electrode interface. The ion desolvation in new‐concept electrolytes is directly attributed to the SEI rather than the regulated solvation structure. This work proposes a new SEI‐aided ion desolvation model, bridging the SEI and battery kinetics and redefining the functions of SEI. The conventional knowledge of solid electrolyte interphases (SEIs) is limited to their ionic conductive and electron‐insulating properties. The solvation structure regulation in the new‐concept electrolytes always leads to the regulated SEI, resulting in the improvement of ion desolvation kinetics. However, the linkage between the improved kinetics and the regulated SEl remains unconnected at the atomic level. Herein, this work proposes that the SEI can function more by facilitating ion desolvation. Using quantum chemistry calculations, this work explores the ion desolvation processes with and without SEI. It is found the accelerated ion desolvation in the new‐concept electrolytes is directly attributed to the SEI rather than the regulated solvation structure. Based on the recognition of SEI's role, this work proposes an SEI‐aided ion desolvation model. This study bridges the SEI and battery kinetics at the atomic scale and redefines the functions of SEI, which are expected to steer the electrolyte design in batteries.

Abstract:The formation and evolution of the dynamic solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) at the Si anode/electrolyte interface are yet to be completely understood to solve irreversible capacity loss and increase battery cycle life. Herein, the evolution of SEI and its dynamic properties at the Si anode/electrolyte interface are investigated in two electrolyte systems, a 1.2 M LiPF6 in EC: EMC 3:7 (wt%) electrolyte (referred to as Gen2) and a 1.2 M LiTFSI in EC: EMC 3:7 (wt%) electrolyte (referred to as LiTFSI). Two lithiation stages are studied: the pre-lithiation (pre-Li) SEI stage and the post-lithiation (post-Li) stage. Findings reveal at the pre-Li, SEI formation starts at an early potential and is more prominent in the Si/Gen2, and it is dominated by the formation of a non-uniform F- and P-rich layer in Si/Gen2, in contrast to a homogeneous F- and C-containing layer at the Si/LiTFSI interphase. The initially formed SEI in LiTFSI further benefits the charge transfer kinetics. At the post-Li stage, a more substantial SEI evolution is observed at Si/LiTFSI. This study offers a foundational understanding of the SEI dynamic evolution with electrolyte dependence. Findings from this report offer important insights into solving the complex SEI stability issues on Si.

Abstract:The solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) forming on electrode surfaces is critical for efficient battery performance. However, atomic‐level details of the SEI formation are largely unknown. A realistic atomistic model of SEI growth at the Li/ionic liquid interface using reactive molecular dynamics simulations is developed. The results provide new insights into a deeper understanding of the SEI structure and composition. The solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) forms on electrode surfaces from decomposition of the electrolyte. However, there is almost no atomistic detail of SEI formation on Li metal anode, a major obstacle in understanding the highly complex battery electrochemistry sufficiently to design high performance batteries. Herein, a realistic atomistic model (39 000 atoms) for the SEI formation at the interface between the Li metal anode and ionic liquid electrolyte using reactive molecular dynamics simulations is provided. A ≈10 nm thick SEI composed of a dense ordered inorganic layer near the Li‐metal anode and a porous organic layer near the electrolyte is found. These results provide new insights into a deeper understanding of the complex SEI that should be useful in developing a new generation of highly efficient batteries.

Based on the mechanism and models of SEI, the possible effect factors on the SEI film and its modification methods are given. The applications of different analysis technology, especially the in situ analysis technology are discussed. The SEI film formed on cathode surface and the interaction between electrodes based on aqueous binding materials and electrolyte solution would be the hotspot in the future.

Abstract:The solid electrolyte interface (SEI) forms as a result of side reactions between the electrolyte and electrode surfaces in Li-ion batteries and can adversely impact performance by impeding Li-ion transport and diminishing the storage capacity of the battery. To gain a detailed understanding of the impact of the SEI on electrolyte structure, atomistic molecular dynamics simulations of the electrode/electrolyte interface were performed in the presence and absence of the SEI under applied voltages. The composition of the SEI was guided by a wealth of data from experiments and allowed to vary across the simulations. A novel computational approach was implemented that showed significant computational speedup compared to fully polarizable electrode simulations, yet, retained the correct qualitative physics for the electrolyte. A force-matching algorithm was used to construct a new force field for the pure electrolyte, LiPF6 in ethylene carbonate, which was developed from ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. The electrode/electrolyte interface was included using a simple, physically motivated model, which includes the polarization of the conducting graphitic electrode by the electrolyte and the application of an external voltage. Changes in the structure of the electrolyte at the interface as a function of applied voltage, the thickness of the SEI layer, and composition of the SEI provide molecular level insight into the species present at these interfaces and potential clues to the effect of the SEI on transport. It is noted that, with increasing SEI thickness and LiF content, lithium ions are drawn closer to the SEI surface, which implies that these interfaces favor desolvation and promote more rapid lithium transport.

Abstract:Solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is an ion conductive yet electron-insulating layer on battery electrodes, which is formed by the reductive decomposition of electrolytes during the initial charge. The nature of the SEI significantly impacts the safety, power, and lifetime of the batteries. Hence, elucidating the formation mechanism of the SEI layer has become a top priority. Conventional theoretical calculations reveal initial elementary steps of electrolyte reductive decomposition, whereas experimental approaches mainly focus on the characterization of the formed SEI in the final form. Moreover, both theoretical and experimental methodologies could not approach intermediate or transient steps of SEI growth. A major breakthrough has recently been achieved through a novel multiscale simulation method, which has enriched the understanding of how the reduction products are aggregated near the electrode and influence the SEI morphologies. This review highlights recent theoretical achievements to reveal the growth mechanism and provides a clear guideline for designing a stable SEI layer for advanced batteries.

Abstract:This study investigated the influence of variations in the mixing ratio of ethylene carbonate (EC) to ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC) on the composition and effectiveness of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) in lithium-metal batteries. The SEI is crucial for battery performance, as it prevents continuous electrolyte decomposition and inhibits the growth of lithium dendrites, which can cause internal short circuits leading to battery failure. Although the properties of the SEI largely depend on the electrolyte solvent, the influence of the EC:EMC ratio on SEI properties has not yet been elucidated. Through electrochemical testing, ionic conductivity measurements, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the formation of Li2CO3, LiF, and organolithium compounds on lithium surfaces was systematically analyzed. This study demonstrated that the EC:EMC ratio significantly affected the SEI structure, primarily owing to the promotion of the formation of a denser SEI layer. Specifically, the ratios of 1:1 and 1:3 facilitated a uniform distribution and prevalence of Li2CO3 and LiF throughout the SEI, thereby affecting cell performance. Thus, precise control of the EC:EMC ratio is essential for enhancing the mechanical robustness and electrochemical stability of the SEI, thereby providing valuable insights into the factors that either enhance or impede effective SEI formation.

Abstract:An understanding of the formation and evolution of the solid electrolyte interface (SEI) layer is still a challenge for lithium ion batteries due to its complexity and non-uniformity. Herein, an in-situ electrochemical technique, named potential resolved in-situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (PRIs-EIS), have developed to correlate the Nyquist and Bode plot changes with the voltammetric scan, which is then used to determine the correspondence between circuit components and SEI layer composition. Moreover, the formation and re-oxidation of organic compounds in the SEI layer are studied in conjunction with the electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance characteristics. In particular, it is shown that more inorganic compounds accumulate in the SEI layer as the cycle continues, repairing the pore structure, but decreasing the toughness of the SEI layer. The PRIs-EIS technique is shown to be a powerful, useful and cost-effective tool to illuminate the interfacial reaction mechanism, and the results from this technique aid in the evaluation and design of electrolyte systems.

Abstract:The stability of modern lithium-ion batteries depends critically on an effective solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI), a passivation layer that forms on the carbonaceous negative electrode as a result of electrolyte reduction. However, a nanoscopic understanding of how the SEI evolves with battery aging remains limited due to the difficulty in characterizing the structural and chemical properties of this sensitive interphase. In this work, we image the SEI on carbon black negative electrodes using cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) and track its evolution during cycling. We find that a thin, primarily amorphous SEI nucleates on the first cycle, which further evolves into one of two distinct SEI morphologies upon further cycling: (1) a compact SEI, with a high concentration of inorganic components that effectively passivates the negative electrode; and (2) an extended SEI spanning hundreds of nanometers. This extended SEI grows on particles that lack a compact SEI and consists primarily of alkyl carbonates. The diversity in observed SEI morphologies suggests that SEI growth is a highly heterogeneous process. The simultaneous emergence of these distinct SEI morphologies highlights the necessity of effective passivation by the SEI, as large-scale extended SEI growths negatively impact lithium-ion transport, contribute to capacity loss, and may accelerate battery failure.

Abstract:The solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and stability of batteries. The SEI layer is highly complex and it comprises organic and inorganic components due to the electrolyte decomposition and electrode dissolution. In this study, SEI layers were formed at various current rates using a full cell, and their chemical and electrochemical properties were investigated. SEIs formed at various current rates consisted of similar constituents; however, the composition of the constituents differed according to the current rate, indicating the effect of current rate on the SEI formation kinetics. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) thermograms showed that the SEI formed at a low current rate included a larger portion of components that decomposed at ∼100°C than those formed at high current rates. In addition, in-depth X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) also revealed this difference in composition according to the varying current rate. The anode cycled at a low current rate displayed a low charge transfer resistance. This study suggests that the physicochemical and electrochemical properties of SEIs differ depending on the formation conditions.

Abstract:Scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) was applied for in situ visualization of solid electrolyte interface (SEI) evolution on the TiO2 anode in a concentrated aqueous electrolyte during cycling. In nonaqueous electrolytes, the SEI is an electronic insulative layer composed of organic and inorganic components covering the electrode surface. However, in concentrated aqueous electrolytes, the SEI is mostly composed of inorganic compounds formed by electrolyte decomposition, such as LiF and Li2CO3, which are randomly distributed over the TiO2 surface. In addition, the Ti3+ and Li residuals accumulated through multiple cycling lead to an increase in the overall electronic conductivity of the TiO2 anode. During the resting period after cycling, an inverse process is observed with partial dissolution of the formed SEI and the diffusion of Li residuals back into the electrolyte.

Molecular dynamics simulations of the Li-ion diffusion in the amorphous solid electrolyte interphase

Abstract:The solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), a passivation film covering the electrode surface, is crucial to the lifetime and efficiency of the lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery. Understanding the Li-ion diffusion mechanism within possible components in the mosaic-structured SEI is an essential step to improve the Li-ion conductivity and thus the battery performance. Here, we investigate the Li-ion diffusion mechanism within three amorphous SEI components (i.e., the inorganic inner layer, organic outer layer, and their mixture with 1:1 molar ratio) via ab initio molecular dynamic (AIMD) simulations. Our simulations show that the Li-ion diffusion coefficient in the inorganic layer is two orders of magnitude faster than that in the organic layer. Therefore, the inorganic layer makes a major contribution to the Li-ion diffusion. Furthermore, we find that the Li-ion diffusivity in the organic layer decreases slightly with the increase of the carbon chain from the methyl to ethyl owing to the steric hindrance induced by large groups. Overall, our current work unravels the Li-ion diffusion mechanism, and provides an atomic-scale insight for the understanding of the Li-ion transport in the SEI components.
