Abstract:UV light can cause damage to polymer coatings used in transportation, oil, and agricultural industries, requiring costly repair or replacement of the coating. In this work, a self‐healing epoxy coating is developed so that UV light activates a desirable autonomous healing response to mechanical damage. The coatings contain a single type of microcapsule with a UV curable epoxy healing chemistry in the core and a novel UV protecting shell wall with embedded carbon black particles. Photo differential scanning calorimetry reveals that up to a 65% degree of protection is provided by the UV blocking shell wall after UV exposure. The addition of a polyurethane (PU) top coat provides further increases in the level of protection (ca. 100%). After damage with a scribe and exposure to UV, the presence of healed epoxy is confirmed by confocal Raman and fluorescent spectroscopy. The anticorrosion performance of healed coatings on steel substrates is assessed after exposure to a simulated saltwater solution. The UV curable, self‐healing coating exhibited significantly less corrosion than a control coating with no self‐healing ability.This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Abstract:AbstractSelf‐healing coatings possess the remarkable ability to autonomously mend damages and restore their corrosion protection capabilities, which are compromised due to environmental influences or external forces. The progression of computational materials science has significantly bolstered theoretical explorations into self‐healing anti‐corrosion coatings. Such inquiries enhance our grasp of self‐healing mechanisms, refine coating efficacy, and curtail the expenditures associated with empirical approaches. The research advancements in computational materials science for self‐healing coatings are reviewed here. It delineates the theoretical elucidation of self‐healing mechanisms through the lens of molecular dynamics, density functional theory, Monte Carlo simulations, and finite element analysis. The computational exploration of intrinsic self‐healing coatings primarily involves dynamic reversible covalent bonds, dynamic reversible non‐covalent bonds, and shape memory effect; whereas, extrinsic self‐healing coatings concentrate on the modalities of film‐forming substances and the adsorption behaviours of corrosion inhibitors. These simulation techniques not only shed light on the self‐healing processes at a microscopic scale but also enable the prediction and enhancement of the macroscopic performance attributes of the coatings in practical applications. The merits and constraints of these computational simulation methodologies when applied to self‐healing coatings are critically assessed. Looking ahead, efforts will be directed towards a more profound amalgamation of computational simulations, empirical investigations, and artificial intelligence. This will pave the way for creating a comprehensive database cataloguing the self‐healing properties of coatings, thereby streamlining material selection and design with greater efficiency.
Anticorrosive composite self-healing coating enabled by solar irradiation

Abstract:Self-healing coatings for long-term corrosion protection have received much interest in recent years. However, most self-healing coatings rely on healants released from microcapsules, dynamic bonds, shape memory, or thermoplastic materials, which generally suffer from limited healing times or harsh conditions for self-healing, such as high temperature and UV radiation. Herein, we present a composite coating with a self-healing function under easily accessible sunlight by adding Fe3O4 nanoparticles and tetradecanol into epoxy resin. Tetradecanol, with its moderate melting point, and Fe3O4 nanoparticles serve as a phase-change component and photo-thermal material in an epoxy coating system, respectively. Fe3O4 nanoparticles endow this composite self-healing coating with good photothermal properties and a rapid thermal response time under simulated solar irradiation as well as outdoor real sunlight. Tetradecanol can flow to and fill defects by phase transition at low temperatures. Therefore, artificial defects created in this type of self-healing coating can be healed by the liquified tetradecanol induced by the photothermal effect of Fe3O4 nanoparticles under simulated solar irradiation. The healed coating can still serve as a good barrier for the protection of the underlying carbon steel. These excellent properties make this self-healing coating an excellent candidate for various engineering applications.

Abstract:For conventional anticorrosion coatings, it is challenging to simultaneously report and repair two failure stages involving coating damage and interfacial metal corrosion. Thus, it leads to difficulties for continuous detection of coating service status, and may result in premature failure of metal-based equipment. Herein, we present a novel photothermal responsive composite epoxy system with hierarchical damage reporting and healing capabilities, which is enabled by mesoporous polydopamine nano-spheres loaded with crystal violet lactone (CVL) and phenanthroline (Phen). In our design, the coating damage is indicated by the immediately intensified fluorescent and can be rapidly closed in 90 s of NIR irradiation. Furthermore, the on-demand released corrosion probes (Phen) are able to chelate with Fe 2+ ions generated from localized corrosion, producing distinct visual red color to report corrosion pits and resisting corrosion developing process. The proposed smart coatings provide a concept for achieving hierarchically self-reporting and self-repairing function of general coating defects and substrate corrosion, thus having certain potential to be applied in smart anticorrosion applications.

Abstract:Self-healing coatings with the ability to effectively recover their barrier property upon damage is essential to protect metal substrates against corrosion. This paper provides a comprehensive of the research progress for photothermally activated self-healing coatings, which can remotely activate the repair of coating damage and restore their corrosion resistance through convenient light irradiation. Among the different types of photothermal-responsive materials, carbon-based materials, organic species, plasmonic nanomaterials, MXene, and Fe3O4 nanoparticles are commonly used as fillers in self-healing coatings. These photothermal fillers generate abundant heat under specific light irradiation at certain wavelengths, stimulating a series of physical or chemical reactions for recovering the barrier properties of coatings. Based on intrinsic and extrinsic self-healing strategies, several photothermally activated self-healing methods, including the melting of coating matrix or fillers, shape memory effect and thermoreversible reaction of coating matrix, and release of corrosion inhibitors, are introduced. Typical self-healing performance and advantages and weaknesses of different self-healing mechanisms are elaborately discussed. Compared with extrinsic self-healing strategies, intrinsic ones can improve the cyclic self-healing performance under photothermal excitation. Moreover, a combination of multiple healing mechanisms yields excellent self-healing performance, which facilitates the long-term protective capability of coatings. Finally, current difficulties and future development perspectives associated with photothermally activated self-healing coatings are analyzed to promote research development and expand engineering applications.

Abstract:Smart self-healing coatings offer a revolutionary approach to mitigating metal corrosion, a problem with significant economic and environmental impacts. Divided into intrinsic and extrinsic types, these coatings autonomously rectify the damage. Intrinsic variants utilize reversible bonds to achieve ongoing repair, while extrinsic ones incorporate micro/nanocontainers that activate upon environmental triggers to mend micro-cracks, their efficacy dictated by the encapsulated healing agents' volume. This review dissects the rapidly evolving sector of stimuli-responsive self-healing coatings, emphasizing the progress in micro/nano container technology. It discusses the synthesis and encapsulation processes of different micro/nanocontainers and charts the transition from single to multistimulus-responsive systems, which enhances the coatings' sensitivity and functionality. The addition of multifunctional traits such as self-reporting and anti-microbial actions further broadens their industrial applicability. The review provides a succinct overview of the field's current state and future potential, envisioning a paradigm shift in corrosion protection through advanced smart coatings.

Abstract:Epoxy resin coatings are widely used for corrosion protection of marine aluminum alloy equipment, but they suffer from high water absorption, brittleness, and slow repair, limiting long-term use. To address these issues, we developed an innovative self-healing coating using epoxy resin, nano-silica, a silane coupling agent, furanamine (FA), and bismaleimide (BMI). Our optimally formulated coating exhibited hydrophobicity (97°), high hardness (7 H), strong adhesion (5B), and rapid self-healing within 10 min at 80 °C, a much simpler process than previously reported. Remarkably, the coating maintained excellent self-healing and stable performance after 40 cycles of scratching and heating. Electrochemical tests and equivalent circuit fitting analysis showed superior corrosion resistance before and after scratching and healing, achieving a corrosion protection rate of 99.997%. After 300-day immersion, the coating reduced the corrosion area by 99.84% compared to pure epoxy resin, which had delaminated. This work provides a practical solution for enhancing the durability and anti-corrosion performance of epoxy coatings in marine applications.

Abstract:An ultimate goal of protective coatings is capable of repeated self‐healing without intervention. In this work, a biomimetic strategy of introducing "soft" self‐healing and viscoelastic oleogel microspheres into waterborne epoxy to construct a "soft + hard" hybrid architectural composite coating is proposed, successfully achieving room‐temperature self‐healing and superior corrosion protection with excellent wear resistance, water repellency, and anti‐biofouling. Intrinsically self‐healing coatings are compelling candidates for highly reliable anti‐corrosion technologies because of their easy implementation, low cost, and repeatable self‐healing. However, most of these coatings require intervention to initiate healing due to the locking of their chain segments under ambient conditions (to provide sufficient mechanical strength). Herein, a "soft + hard" hybrid architecture strategy of preparing oleogel‐based protective coatings with room‐temperature and repeatable self‐healing is proposed by embedding "soft" self‐healing and viscoelastic oleogel microspheres (OMs) in "hard" waterborne epoxy matrix. Such a decoupled design affords both instantaneous healing without external stimuli (crack narrowing within 10 min and protection recovered within 5 h) and good mechanical properties (improved wear resistance with an 80% reduction in friction coefficient, a 63% reduction in wear volume, as well as a maintained adhesion strength of 96%). The slippery and hydrophobic OMs also bring anti‐biofouling, interfacial water repellency, and inhibitor loading‐release features, leading to coatings with superior corrosion protection (>1010 Ω cm2 impedance modulus throughout 110 d) rather than just their self‐healing. This work demonstrates a feasible approach to integrating room‐temperature repeatable self‐healing and sufficient mechanical strength in future coating design.

Abstract:In this study, a self-healing epoxy coating was prepared by incorporating a dual capsule healing system including epoxy resin and its amine-based curing agent. The emulsion electrospray technique was used for encapsulating the healing agents in poly(styrene co-acrylonitrile) (SAN) as shell material. Characterizing the prepared microcapsules (MCs) by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) revealed their spherical morphology with the particle size of 827 nm and 749 nm for epoxy and amine cores, respectively. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) results confirmed successful encapsulation with no side chemical reaction between the encapsulated core and shell materials. The effects of embedding MCs on the physical and mechanical properties of the epoxy coating matrix were studied by pull-off adhesion, conical mandrel bending, and gloss tests. In addition, the prepared coatings’ self-healing performance was evaluated by Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization (Tafel) experiments. The results revealed that the coating sample containing 1 wt% of core-shell MCs (a mixture of epoxy and amine-containing MCs with a 50 : 50 weight ratio) showed the best corrosion performance with 99% self-healing efficiency.

Abstract:Alternating hydrostatic pressure (AHP) is the main cause of the marine coating failure of deep-sea tools and equipment. Herein, we synthesized a novel nanostructure, namely, graphene oxide-mesoporous silicon dioxide layer-nanosphere structure loaded with tannic acid (GSLNTA), as a self-healing coating additive. The anticorrosion and anti-AHP performance and the self-healing capability of GSLNTA coating were evaluated through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and alternating current scanning electrochemical microscopy (AC-SECM). Results showed that the nanolayer structure of GSLNTA effectively inhibited corrosion mass transmission under simulated deepsea AHP. The nanospheres of GSLNTA released inhibitors to form a ferric tannate film on the exposed metal surface under AHP. The nanolayer and nanosphere of GSLNTA self-healing coating exerted a synergistic effect on anti-corrosion and anti-AHP performance and blocked corrosion factor transmission and coating failure in deepsea applications. AC-SECM revealed the advantages of local impedance complementation of different electrochemical parameters (vertical bar Z vertical bar and -phase) to monitor the self-healing of coatings with GSLNTA. This work also investigated the self-healing performance of alkyd varnish coating embedded with synthetic GSLNTA in protecting steel surfaces. Self-healing materials have an "active healing" capability to prolong the life of organic coatings after unwanted external damage in deep-sea environments.

Abstract:Combining a fast self-healing action and a high barrier property remains a challenge in polymeric protective coatings. Herein, we report an intrinsic self-healing epoxy coating in which 2-ureido-4[1 H]-pyrimidinone (UPy) as a quadruple hydrogen bonding unit, grafted onto the backbones of an epoxy-matrix by an amine-terminated oligo(propylene glycol) linker. Without any intervention, the epoxy-matrix performs its self-healing function in ∼5 min, even under aqueous immersion. Besides, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements demonstrate corrosion protection ability of such self-healed coating on a steel substrate, with a high |Z|0.01Hz value of 4.8 × 1010 Ω·cm2 after 60 days of immersion in NaCl solution.

Abstract:This work aims at investigating the self-healing ability of epoxy coatings, modified with microcapsules containing highly reactive isocyanate in their core. Highly efficient, thermally and chemically stable isophorone diisocyanate microcapsules were prepared via emulsification followed by interfacial polymerization at the surface of oil droplets of the oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion. The microcapsules were incorporated into an epoxy coating to protect carbon steel from corrosion. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was used to assess the microcapsules̕ and coating morphology. The physico-chemical characterization of the microcapsules was studied by Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA). Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) was employed to evaluate the protective performance of coated steel samples and results confirmed that the barrier properties of modified coatings increased over time. The self-healing ability was studied via Localized Impedance Spectroscopy (LEIS), Scanning Vibrating Electrode Technique (SVET) and Scanning Ion-Selective Electrode Techniques (SIET) on coated steel samples containing artificial defects. This comprehensive study confirmed the ability of the capsules to heal damaged areas in the coating and to mitigate corrosion thanks to the formation of a protective polymeric barrier layer.

Abstract:As a significant method to inhibit metal corrosion by blocking the diffusion of corrosive mediums to the metal surface, the anticorrosion coating with a self-healing function can actively repair a damaged structure and improve the anticorrosion performance to better meet actual needs. In this study, "external aid" and "intrinsic triggering" self-healing coatings have been introduced in detail, including the preparation method, healing mechanism and practical applications. The healing of "external aid" is based on the addition components such as microcapsules containing healing agents and functional nanoparticles, whose ability of self-healing shows the independence with the coating resin. But the finitely additive amount may limit the sustainable use of "external aid" components, and the abundant fillers also change the basic physical properties of the coating. On the contrary, the "intrinsic triggering" resins can form the cover layer in the defects owing to the physical or chemical reactions between the polymer chains, along with the unlimited cycles theoretically. By contrast, the small defects or gaps can be repaired gradually through chain reactions, but the large areas of damage may need the quick release of healing additives in "external aid" coating. In this review, the advances of two kinds of self-healing coatings were analyzed to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of various healing technologies, and the challenges of development and prospects were also forecasted to provide useful ideas.
Photothermally activated self-healing protective coating based on the “close and seal” dual-action mechanisms

Abstract:In this work, a dual-action self-healing coating with excellent photothermal response to both near-infrared (NIR) laser and sunlight irradiation was prepared. The coating was composed of a shape memory epoxy matrix embedded with poly (ε-caprolactone) (PCL) microspheres, the surface of which was covered by titanium nitride nanoparticles (TiN NPs) to achieve the superior photothermal conversion ability. Upon light irradiation, the PCL@TiN composite microspheres could efficiently absorb light energy and generate sufficient heat to induce the shape memory recovery of coating defect as well as the melting of PCL to seal the scratch. Morphology observation and electrochemical measurements proved that the coating incorporated with 10 wt% of PCL@TiN microspheres presented an excellent self-healing performance under 30 s of NIR illumination to recover the barrier property. In addition, the photothermal conversion of PCL@TiN microspheres could accelerate the evaporation of water around the coating scratch, hence restraining the corrosion activity in the damaged region. The outdoor exposure test on the atmospheric corrosion monitor (ACM) covered by the coating confirmed that sunlight also benefited to achieve the prominent self-healing performance and shorten the water evaporation time, leading to much reduced corrosion current outputs hence improved corrosion protection property.

Abstract:Polymeric coatings represent a well-established protection system that provides a barrier between a metallic substrate and the environment. The development of a smart organic coating for the protection of metallic structures in marine and offshore applications is a challenge. In the present study, we investigated the use of self-healing epoxy as an organic coating suitable for metallic substrates. The self-healing epoxy was obtained by mixing Diels–Alder (D–A) adducts with a commercial diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA) monomer. The resin recovery feature was assessed through morphological observation, spectroscopic analysis, and mechanical and nanoindentation tests. Barrier properties and anti-corrosion performance were evaluated through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The film on a metallic substrate was scratched and subsequently repaired using proper thermal treatment. The morphological and structural analysis confirmed that the coating restored its pristine properties. In the EIS analysis, the repaired coating exhibited diffusive properties similar to the pristine material, with a diffusivity coefficient of 1.6 10−6 cm2/s (undamaged system 3.1 10−6 cm2/s), confirming the restoration of the polymeric structure. These results reveal that a good morphological and mechanical recovery was achieved, suggesting very promising applications in the field of corrosion-resistant protective coatings and adhesives.

Abstract:This study describes the development of self‐healing coatings based on surface‐tethered covalently adaptable networks. By combining surface‐initiated polymerization with spray‐coating, the tethered coatings can autonomously self‐heal micron‐scale incisions within seconds. Compared to physisorbed analogs, these covalently‐tethered coatings provide increased robustness, environmental stability, and resistance against solvent or shear delamination. The incorporation of self‐healing properties to repair scratches (or other minor damage) has revolutionized the coating industry by increasing service life, sustainability, and optical appearance. This work addresses challenges with the robustness of self‐healing coatings through the inclusion of surface‐tethered covalently adaptable networks (CANs). Surface‐initiated polymerization is combined with spray‐coating to deposit polymers to produce coatings with reversible crosslinks to the tethered chains. These robust coatings are based on reversible vinylogous urethane bonds using 2‐(acetoacetoxy)ethyl methacrylate‐based polymers and tris(2‐aminoethyl) amine (TREN). Here, TREN enables reversible covalent bonding between the spray‐coated and surface‐tethered polymers. Without this polymer brush layer, the physisorbed CAN coatings fail to self‐heal completely, are labile to solvent, and exhibit shear delamination upon scratching. The utility of this tethered coating approach is highlighted through its ability to autonomously self‐heal incisions within seconds at elevated temperatures, or more steadily under ambient conditions. The key to these advancements is the use of polymer brushes as a primer layer to attach the CAN to enhance healing and improve the environmental robustness of the coating.

Abstract:In recent years corrosion-resistant self-healing coatings have witnessed strong growth and their successful laboratory design and synthesis categorises them in the family of smart/multi-functional materials. Among various approaches for achieving self-healing, microcapsule embedment through the material matrix is the main one for self-healing ability in coatings. The present work focuses on optimizing the process parameters for developing microcapsules by in-situ polymerization of linseed oil as core and urea-formaldehyde as shell material. Characteristics of these microcapsules with respect to change in processing parameters such as stirring rate and reaction time were studied by using optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The effectiveness of these microcapsules in coatings was characterized by studying their adhesion, performance, and mechanical properties.

Abstract:Superabsorpent polymers are incorporated in the epoxy coating system to produce self‐healing coating. Once a scratch is introduced, the superabsorbent polymers are exposed and swells in the presence of water, resulting to the closing of the scratch. This leads to the increase in the low‐frequency impedance and in turn increase in overall resistance of the system. This study evaluated the self‐healing characteristics of superabsorbent polymers (SAP) in epoxy polyamide paint systems applied using brush application. The SAP underwent preliminary characterization to determine its primary properties and was then incorporated into the epoxy primer at different percentages. The epoxy‐SAP coating systems then underwent various tests to evaluate their self‐healing capability. Excellent adhesion is obtained with the coating system composed of initial epoxy primer, epoxy‐SAP layer, final epoxy primer, and an epoxy enamel topcoat. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) reveals that the addition of SAP increased the charge transfer resistance and pore resistance and decreased the double layer capacitance of the coating system in a span of 5 h, confirming the self‐healing of the coating. Maximum corrosion protection for 5 h is obtained between 15 to 20 wt% SAP. Lastly, it is determined through long‐term immersion tests that the addition of SAP in the coating significantly decreases the rust formation; however, the coating starts to peel off due to the swelling of SAP after 2–3 days.

Abstract:Self-healing coatings formulated by stimuli-responsive container technology are regarded as a prospective strategy for long-term corrosion protection. However, such types of coatings suffer from low coating adaptability and delays in corrosion protection because the occurrence of corrosion is prior to the release of healants from containers. Herein, we took advantage of the easy hydrolysis of MOF-199 for water-induced self-healing properties. Mixed corrosion inhibitors were loaded into MOF-199 and then incorporated into acrylic coating. The water sensitivity of MOF-199 was investigated and EIS tests were used to evaluate the self-healing performance. Due to the collapse of the porous MOF-199 structure, corrosion inhibitors could be released from MOF-199 with the invasion of water into acrylic coating. The corrosion resistance performance of damaged self-healing coating gradually increased. The metal exposed to artificial defects was well protected due to a barrier formed by corrosion inhibitors. Owing to these merits, this self-healing coating is recommended for use in various fields of engineering for corrosion resistance.
