Abstract:The aggregation behaviors and phase separation of binary nanoparticles immersed in semiflexible polymer brushes are explored using molecular dynamics simulations. The conformations of the binary nanoparticle-brush mixtures are very sensitive to the size ratio q = sigma(l)/sigma(s) where sigma(l) and sigma(s) are the diameters for large and small nanoparticles, respectively, and the attractive interactions epsilon(M) between the nanoparticles and polymer brushes. The phase separation of the binary nanoparticles is observed at a relatively strong attractive interaction under the effects of inter-nanoparticle depletion attractions provided by polymer brushes. Furthermore, the crystallization of small nanoparticles occurs at a strong interaction and a hexagonal close-packed-like (hcp-like) ordered structure is formed. The present results may promise a new approach for controlling the self-assembling behavior of nanoparticles and constructing a better macroscopic performance of the material.

Abstract:The surface-induced phase transitions in dense nanoparticle arrays of lamella-forming diblock copolymers are investigated by using the real-space self-consistent field theory. The dense nanoparticle array provides a distinct and strong confinement environment where there are incomplete confinements in three spatial directions. Several complicated phases with cubic symmetries, such as the monocontinuous and bicontinuous phases, are identified in the dense nanoparticle arrays. Through adjusting the strength of surface preference, the disorder phases are induced into the complicated order phases in the nanoparticle arrays with small periods while the order–order transitions occurs in those with large periods. Investigations on the free and entropic energies indicate that these surface-induced phase transitions are of first-order and the stabilities of order phases are intimately correlated to the strength of surface preference. Our results enrich the knowledge about the phase behaviors of macromolecules in confined systems, which may be helpful to fabricate the novel nanomaterials based on the block copolymers.
The Effects of Nanoparticles on the Lamellar Phase Separation of Diblock Copolymers

Abstract:The phase separation of diblock copolymers containing, some energetically neutral/biased nanoparticles is studied by means of large-scale dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulations. The effects of the volume fraction of nanoparticles, the size of nanoparticles, and the interaction strength between nanoparticles and blocks on the lamellar phase separation of diblock copolymers are investigated. When these effects are up to a critical value, the diblock copolymer nanocomposites can form a new bicontinuous morphology, which is well consistent with the experimental results. It is also found that the degree of order of phase separation for a given system increases slightly and then decreases abruptly until the bicontinuous morphology is formed as the volume fraction of nanoparticles increases. Furthermore, we discuss the microphase transition through the position distributions of nanoparticles and present a phase diagram in terms of the nanoparticle volume fraction, size, and surface interaction strength.

Abstract:Agglomeration and entanglement pose significant challenges in carbon-based micro/nanomaterials application, hindering the complete expression and fine-tuning of individual properties. A universal spatiotemporal electrified (STE) approach is proposed, which enables the efficient separation of individual constituents from agglomerates, achieving one-step dispersion in the gas phase. This process operates through two features: (1) periodic weak spark loosening and (2) spatial electric field attraction. The periodic weak spark, self-induced and automatically triggered by the material, generates induced electromagnetic fields and shock waves that facilitate repulsion, propulsion, and loosening of the agglomerate structure, endowing the material with capability to overcome the high frictional barriers. Simultaneously, the constructed spatial electric field continuously attracts, selectively separating and outputting individual micro/nanomaterials in real-time. This results in a one-step, concise dispersion process with additional benefits like alignment and blending. Overall, the STE approach has broad applicability and potential to unlock the full capabilities of micro/nanomaterials in various applications.

Abstract:As an important battery cathode material, reaction distribution inlithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) has been extensively studied in dispersedparticle systems, but remains poorly understood for mesoscopic agglomerates (orsecondary particles) that are used in most commercial batteries. Herein, we applythree-dimensional X-ray spectroscopic imaging to characterize the two-phasestructure in LiFePO4secondary particles during electrochemical cycling.(De)lithiated domains are found to not form the commonly assumed core-shell structure but develop highly anisotropicfilamentary morphology that is rateindependent and symmetric between charging and discharging. Phase-fieldsimulations elucidate that the observed 1D phase growth behavior is not causedby the 1D lithium diffusivity of LiFePO4but the elastic interaction between primary particles, which gives rise to strongerreaction heterogeneity than dispersed nanoparticles. As a result, uniform lithium (de)intercalation does not occur on thesecondary particle surface even at high cycling rates.

Abstract:The aim of this work is to understand the agglomeration of charged powders suspended in nonpolar fluids. The concerted influence of electromagnetic, hydrodynamic and van der Waals forces as well as Brownian motion leads to a complex agglomeration behavior that depends on several parameters, e.g., the ratios of electric charges, particle sizes, temperatures and concentrations of the particles. Both experimental and theoretical considerations are presented. Hydrodynamic forces, especially the Brownian motion, effectively reduce the Coulomb repulsion. It is predicted that a suspension can only be stabilized at sufficiently low temperatures compared to the Coulomb barrier. Therefore, the aggregation of charged nanoparticles proceeds until a characteristic flake size is reached for which the effective Coulomb barrier equals the attraction forces and the suspension can be regarded as stable. The experimental verification of this result showed that the real agglomeration process starts with presintered aggregates—not primary particles—which agglomerate to larger flakes.

Abstract:A lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) olivine cathode displays rich phase transition behavior during charging/discharging. Despite extensive studies, the evolution of the LiFePO4/FePO4 two-phase coexistence structure and the underlying mechanism are still a point of debate due to the intricate and often disparate phase morphologies observed. Here we apply phase-field simulations to provide detailed insights into the three-dimensional phase evolution process in LiFePO4 upon delithiation under a large driving force. The simulation reveals that the coherency stress arising from the LiFePO4/FePO4 lattice mismatch destabilizes the initially flat delithiation front and induces filamentary growth of the FePO4 phase along [010], which is in excellent agreement with a recent operando X-ray imaging study [Ohmer et al. Nature Communications6, 6045 (2015)]. The combined simulation and experimental results provide the first illustration of the phenomenon of stress-induced instability of the lithium (de)intercalation front in battery electrode compounds. We show that this phenomenon is facilitated by the surface mode of coherent spinodal decomposition in LiFePO4 and influenced by the anisotropies of misfit strain, elasticity and lithium diffusion. It is detrimental to battery performance and life by causing stress concentration and reducing the lithium (de)intercalation kinetics and thus should be mitigated.

Abstract:Lithium-ion batteries exhibit complex nonlinear dynamics, resulting from diffusion and phase transformations coupled to ion-intercalation reactions. Using the recently developed Cahn--Hilliard reaction (CHR) theory, we investigate a simple mathematical model of ion intercalation in a spherical solid nanoparticle, which predicts transitions from solid-solution radial diffusion to two-phase shrinking-core dynamics. This general approach extends previous lithium-ion battery models, which either neglect phase separation or postulate a spherical shrinking-core phase boundary, by predicting phase separation only under appropriate circumstances. The effect of the applied current is captured by generalized Butler--Volmer kinetics, formulated in terms of diffusional chemical potentials, and the model consistently links the evolving concentration profile to the battery voltage. We examine sources of charge/discharge asymmetry, such as asymmetric charge transfer and surface wetting" by ions within the solid, which can lead to three distinct phase regions. In order to solve the fourth-order nonlinear CHR initial-boundary-value problem, a control-volume discretization is developed in spherical coordinates. The basic physics are illustrated by simulating many representative cases, including a simple model of the popular cathode material, lithium iron phosphate (neglecting crystal anisotropy and coherency strain). Analytical approximations are also derived for the voltage plateau as a function of the applied current.

Abstract:Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) is the prototypical two-phase battery material whose complex patterns of lithium ion intercalation provide a testing ground for theories of electrochemical thermodynamics. Using a depth-averaged (a-b plane) phase-field model of coherent phase separation driven by Faradaic reactions, we reconcile conflicting experimental observations of diamond-like phase patterns in micron-sized platelets with observations of surface-controlled patterns in nanoparticles. Elastic analysis predicts this morphological transition for particles whose a-axis dimension exceeds twice the bulk elastic stripe period. We also simulate a rich variety of non-equilibrium patterns, influenced by size-dependent spinodal points and electro-autocatalytic control of thermodynamic stability.

Abstract:Many compounds used as battery storage electrodes undergo large composition changes during use that are accompanied by a first-order phase transition. Most studies of these phase transitions have focused on the unit cell to single-crystallite scale, whereas real battery electrodes are typically composed of mesoscopic assemblies of nanocrystallites, for which phase transformation mechanisms are poorly understood. In this work, a systematic study is conducted of the potentiostatic (constant driving force) kinetics of phase transition in secondary particles of representative intercalation compounds: LiFePO4, LiMn1-xFexPO4, and Li4Ti5O7. Storage kinetics are studied as a function of overpotential, material composition, primary particle size, and temperature. We find that in regimes where phase transformation occurs, the results can be self-consistently explained as nucleation and growth kinetics within the framework of the Johnson-Mehl-Avrami-Kolmogorov model. This implies that despite the common secondary particle topology, the electrochemically driven phase transformations occur by nucleation and growth with little apparent resistance to phase propagation across the grain boundaries. Growth appears to be one-dimensional in nature, consistent with a hybrid growth model in which rapid surface propagation is followed by slower growth into particles.

Abstract:Nanocomposites of silicon nanoparticles (Si NPs) dispersed in between graphene layers emerge as potential anode materials of high-charge capacity for lithium-ion batteries. A key design requirement is to keep Si NPs dispersed without aggregation. Experimental design of the Si NP dispersion in graphene layers has remained largely empirical. Through extensive molecular dynamics simulations, we determine a critical NP dispersion distance as the function of NP size, below which Si NPs in between graphene layers evolve to bundle together. These results offer crucial and quantitative guidance for designing NP-graphene nanocomposite anode materials with high charge capacity.

Abstract:We develop a continuum phase-field model for the simulation of diffusion limited solid-solid phase transformations during lithium insertion in LiFePO4-nano-particles. The solid-solid phase boundary between the LiFePO4 (LFP)-phase and the FePO4 (FP)-phase is modeled as a diffuse interface of finite width. The model-description explicitly resolves a single LiFePO4-particle, which is embedded in an elastically soft electrolyte-phase. Furthermore, we explicitly include anisotropic (orthorhombic) and inhomogeneous elastic effects, resulting from the coherency strain, as well as anisotropic (1D) Li-diffusion inside the nano-particle. The effect of the nano-particle's size on the kinetics of FP to LFP phase transformations is investigated by means of both model. Both models predict a substantial increase in the steady state transformation velocity as the particle-size decreases down to dimensions that are comparable with the width of the interface between the FP and the LFP-phase. However, the extra kinetic parameter of the Allen-Cahn-type description may be used to reduce the strength of the velocity-increase with the decreasing particle size. Further, we consider the influence of anisotropic and inhomogeneous elasticity on the lithiation-kinetics within a rectangularly shaped LiFePO4-particle embedded in an elastically soft electrolyte. Finally, the simulation of equilibrium shapes of LiFePO4-particles is discussed. Within a respective feasibility study, we demonstrate that also the simulation of strongly anisotropic particles with aspect ratios up to 1/5 is possible.

Phase Field Simulations of Ferroelectric Nanoparticles with Different Long-Range-electrostatic and -Elastic Interactions

Abstract:Two-dimensional phase field simulations of ferroelectric nanoparticles with different long-range (LR)-electrostatic and -elastic interactions and different domain wall energy densities are conducted based on the time-dependent Ginzburg–Landau equation. The phase field simulations exhibit vortex patterns of polarizations, which have purely toroidal moments of polarizations and macroscopically negligible averaged polarizations, in nanoparticles without or with weak LR-elastic interactions when LR-electrostatic interactions are fully taken into account. However, a single-domain structure without any toroidal moment of polarizations is formed in small nanoparticles if LR-electrostatic interactions are completely ignored or LR-elastic interactions are fully taken into account. The polarization gradient energy or domain wall energy density plays also an important role in the formation of polarization structure. The vortex structure transits from a multivortex structure to a single-vortex structure as the domain wall energy density increases.

Abstract:Mixtures of colloids with different sizes or shapes are ubiquitous in nature and extensively applied in industries. Phase transition pathways and kinetics in this model system should be investigated because of the difficulty in observing tri-phase coexistence in colloidal platelet-sphere mixtures. Similar to the polymer-sphere mixtures, the phase transition pathway has three main categories. Analytical results show a staged phase transition process in which the mixture first separates into one or two metastable phases, then further separates, and subsequently reaches tri-phase equilibrium. Unique to our system, and different from the gas-liquid-crystal coexistence in colloid-polymer mixtures, the platelet-sphere mixture reached a gas-liquid-liquid crystal (nematic) coexistence. Thus, the different phases are easy to distinguish using the birefringence of the liquid crystals. In addition, the volume fraction of the liquid crystal formation in the ZrP platelet suspensions is much lower than for the crystal formation in hard spheres.
Size-dependent spinodal and miscibility gaps for intercalation in nano-particles

Abstract:Using a recently-proposed mathematical model for intercalation dynamics in phase-separating materials [Singh, Ceder, Bazant, Electrochimica Acta 53, 7599 (2008)], we show that the spinodal and miscibility gaps generally shrink as the host particle size decreases to the nano-scale. Our work is motivated by recent experiments on the high-rate Li-ion battery material LiFePO4; this serves as the basis for our examples, but our analysis and conclusions apply to any intercalation material. We describe two general mechanisms for the suppression of phase separation in nano-particles: (i) a classical bulk effect, predicted by the Cahn-Hilliard equation, in which the diffuse phase boundary becomes confined by the particle geometry; and (ii) a novel surface effect, predicted by chemical-potential-dependent reaction kinetics, in which insertion/extraction reactions stabilize composition gradients near surfaces in equilibrium with the local environment. Composition-dependent surface energy and (especially) elastic strain can contribute to these effects but are not required to predict decreased spinodal and miscibility gaps at the nano-scale.

Abstract:Many lithium-storage materials operate via first-order phase transformations with slow kinetics largely restricted by the nucleation and growth of a new phase. Due to the energy penalties associated with interfaces between coexisting phases, the tendency for a single-phase solid-solution pathway with exceptional reaction kinetics has been predicted to increase with decreasing particle size. Unfortunately, phase evolutions inside such small particles (tens of nanometers) are often shrouded by electrode-scale inhomogeneous reactions containing millions of particles, leading to intensive debate over the size-dependent microscopic reaction mechanisms. This study provides a generally applicable methodology capable of tracking lithiation pathways in individual nanoparticles and unambiguously reveals that lithiation of anatase TiO2 , previously long believed to be biphasic, converts to a single-phase reaction when particle size reaches ≈25 nm. These results imply the prevalence of such a size-dependent transition in lithiation mechanism among intercalation compounds and provide important guidelines for designing high-power electrodes, especially cathodes.

Abstract:In nanoparticulate phase-separating electrodes, phase separation inside the particles can be hindered during their charge/discharge cycles even when a thermodynamic driving force for phase separation exists. In such cases, particles may (de)lithiate discretely in a process referred to as mosaic instability. This instability could be the key to elucidating the complex charge/discharge dynamics in nanoparticulate phase-separating electrodes. In this paper, the dynamics of the mosaic instability is studied using Smoothed Boundary Method simulations at the particle level, where the concentration and electrostatic potential fields are spatially resolved around individual particles. Two sets of configurations consisting of spherical particles with an identical radius are employed to study the instability in detail. The effect of an activity-dependent exchange current density on the mosaic instability, which leads to asymmetric charge/discharge, is also studied. While we show that our model reproduces the results of a porous-electrode model for the simple setup studied here, it is a powerful framework with the capability to predict the detailed dynamics in three-dimensional complex electrodes and provides further insights into the complex dynamics that result from the coupling of electrochemistry, thermodynamics, and transport kinetics.

Atomic evolution of hydrogen intercalation wave dynamics in palladium nanocrystals

Abstract:Solute-intercalation-induced phase separation creates spatial heterogeneities in host materials, a phenomenon ubiquitous in batteries, hydrogen storage, and other energy devices. Despite many efforts, probing intercalation processes at the atomic scale has been a significant challenge. We study hydrogen (de)intercalation in palladium nanocrystals as a model system and achieve atomic-resolution imaging of hydrogen intercalation wave dynamics by utilizing liquid-phase transmission electron microscopy. Our observations reveal that intercalation wave mechanisms, instead of shrinking-core mechanisms, prevail at ambient temperature for palladium nanocubes ranging from ~60 nm down to ~10 nm. We uncover the atomic evolution of hydrogen intercalation wave transitioning from non-planar and inclined boundaries to those closely aligned with {100} planes. Our kinetic Monte Carlo simulations demonstrate the observed intercalation wave dynamics correspond to sorption pathways minimizing the lattice mismatch strain at the phase boundary. Unveiling the atomic intercalation pathways holds profound implications for engineering intercalation-mediated devices and advancements in energy sciences.

Abstract:Phase transformations driven by compositional change require mass flux across a phase boundary. In some anisotropic solids, however, the phase boundary moves along a non-conductive crystallographic direction. One such material is LiXFePO4, an electrode for lithium-ion batteries. With poor bulk ionic transport along the direction of phase separation, it is unclear how lithium migrates during phase transformations. Here, we show that lithium migrates along the solid/liquid interface without leaving the particle, whereby charge carriers do not cross the double layer. X-ray diffraction and microscopy experiments as well as ab initio molecular dynamics simulations show that organic solvent and water molecules promote this surface ion diffusion, effectively rendering LiXFePO4 a three-dimensional lithium-ion conductor. Phase-field simulations capture the effects of surface diffusion on phase transformation. Lowering surface diffusivity is crucial towards supressing phase separation. This work establishes fluid-enhanced surface diffusion as a key dial for tuning phase transformation in anisotropic solids.
