Abstract:Prussian blue is an iron-cyanide-based pigment steadily becoming a widely used electrochemical sensor in detecting hydrogen peroxide at low concentration levels. Prussian blue nanoparticles (PBNPs) have been extensively studied using traditional ensemble methods, which only provide averaged information. Investigating PBNPs at a single entity level is paramount for correlating the electrochemical activities to particle structures and will shed light on the major factors governing the catalyst activity of these nanoparticles. Here we report on using plasmonic electrochemical microscopy (PEM) to study the electrochemistry of PBNPs at the individual nanoparticle level. First, two types of PBNPs were synthesized; type I synthesized with double precursors method and type II synthesized with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) assisted single precursor method. Second, both PBNPs types were compared on their electrochemical reduction to form Prussian white, and the effect from the different particle structures was investigated. Type I PBNPs provided better PEM sensitivity and were used to study the catalytic reduction of hydrogen peroxide. Progressively decreasing plasmonic signals with respect to increasing hydrogen peroxide concentration were observed, demonstrating the capability of sensing hydrogen peroxide at a single nanoparticle level utilizing this optical imaging technique.</p>

Abstract:Electrochemical behaviors of Prussian blue (PB) have been intensively studied for decades because it not only serves as a model electro-active nanomaterial in fundamental electrochemistry but also a promising metal-ion storage electrode material for developing rechargeable batteries. Traditional electrochemical studies are mostly based on bulk materials, leading to an averaged property of billions of PB nanoparticles. In the present work, we employed surface plasmon resonance microscopy (SPRM) to resolve the optical cyclic voltammograms of single PB nanoparticles during electrochemical cycling. It was found that the electrochemical behavior of single PB nanoparticles nicely followed a classical thin-film electrochemistry theory. While kinetic controlled electron transfer was observed at slower scan rates, intraparticle diffusion of K+ ions began to take effect when the scan rate was higher than 60 mV/s. We further found that the electrochemical activity among individual PB nanoparticles was very heterogeneous and such a phenomenon has not been previously observed in the bulk measurements. The present work not only demonstrates the thin-film electrochemical feature of single electro-active nanomaterials for the first time, it also validates the applicability of SPRM technique to investigate a variety of metal ion-storage battery materials, with implications in both fundamental nanoelectrochemistry and electro-active materials for sensing and battery applications.

Abstract:Prussian blue/carbon nanotube (PB/CNT) hybrids with excellent dispersibility in aqueous solutions were synthesized by adding CNTs to an acidic solution of Fe3+, [Fe(CN)(6)](3-) and KCl. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, UV-vis absorption spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy were employed to confirm the formation of PB/CNT hybrids. The PB nanoparticles formed on the CNT surfaces exhibit a narrow size distribution and an average size of 40 nm. The present results demonstrate that the selective reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+ by CNTs is the key step for PB/CNT hybrid formation. The subsequent fabrication of the PB/CNT hybrid films was achieved by layer-by-layer technique. The thus-prepared PB/CNT hybrid films exhibit electrocatalytic activity towards H2O2 reduction.

Abstract:In attempts to obtain high-capacity Prussian blue nanomaterials, current efforts are predominantly focused on the particle-ensemble-level understanding of their structure-activity relationships. Complementarily, it would be insightful to screen out extraordinary individuals from the nanoparticle population. Using a simple and efficient technique of bright-field microscopy, this work enables, for the first time, quantitative characterization of the overall two-redox-center electrochemistry of single Prussian blue nanoparticles many at a time. Quantitative optical voltammograms with little interference from solvent breakdown and non-Faradaic electrode charging/discharging are extracted for each single nanoparticle, revealing clear heterogeneity among them. On this basis, the microscopic method allows a detailed comparative analysis between the two redox-active sites. It is found that while the synthesized nanoparticles show a similar specific capacity of the high-spin (HS-Fe) sites with STD/mean = 30%, most individual nanoparticles exhibit monodispersedly small capacities of the low-spin iron (LS-Fe) sites, only about 1/7 +/- 1 of the HS-Fe capacity. Most importantly, it is discovered that there is always a small fraction (similar to 8%) of the single nanoparticles showing an impressively tripled LS-Fe capacity. Facilitated by optical imaging, the discovery of this easily overlooked extraordinary subpopulation confers alternative opportunities for targeted efforts for material chemists to improve synthesis and material design based on these unusual individuals, which in turn implies the general significance of nanoparticle screening.
In Situ Preparation and Determination of Electrochemical and Electrochromic Properties of Copper Phthalocyanine-Polyaniline Nanocomposite Films

Abstract:Copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) films with different morphologies were electrodeposited on the surfaces of ITO electrodes. Then, in each case, a polyaniline (PANI) film was electrochemically polymerized in situ on the surface of the copper phthalocyanine film to form a CuPc-PANI composite film. The electrochemical properties of the CuPc-PANI composite film were observed to be much better than those of the film without CuPc. With the modification involving the CuPc nanowires, the composite film formed a finer particle surface and an increased interface area between the PANI and the electrolyte. Compared to the single-component PANI film, the CuPc-PANI composite film exhibited better performance with a higher optical contrast (58% at 730 nm), a faster response speed (coloring time of 1.02 s, discoloring time of 1.96 s), and better cycling stability (68.71% of the initial electrochemical activity after 500 cycles, in contrast to only about 48.02% for PANI). Moreover, the CuPc-PANI film shows a new feature that can be used as a supercapacitor (specifically a capacitance value of about 5.4 mF cm(-2) at typical currents). Our results demonstrate that the prepared CuPc-PANI composite film is one of the best candidates for multiple potential applications such as high-performance polymer electrochromic materials and supercapacitors.

Abstract:Nanoscale materials directly interfacing semiconductors is a new area of nanoscience and nanotechnology. Tremendous attention has been paid to inorganic nano size crystals in recent years because of their significant properties. Prussian blue (PB) and its analogues could play important roles in the field of molecule-based magnets, electrochromic materials, ion selectivity electrodes and biosensors. In this study, we report on fabricating Prussian blue patterns on silicon surface by combining the photolithographic techniques and galvanic displacement reaction, and the resulting patterns were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) on the basis of detection of catalytic current for the oxidation Of H2O2.

Abstract:Electrochemical preparation of the Prussian blue (PB)/poly (N-acetylaniline) (PNAANI) composite film was carried out by cyclic voltammetry (CV). Its surface morphology, which was evaluated by Atom Force Microscope (AFM), revealed that PNAANI film provides lots of redox centers for PB growth so that the electrodeposition of PB showed high current densities, and the composite film is much denser than pure PB film. The surface microstructure of the composite film was also characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS). Due to the existence of electrostatic interaction between the PNAANI (polycation) film and the PB (polyanion) film, the composite film cannot be considered as a simple adherent bilayer of PB film and PNAANI film. The electroactivity and stability of the PB/PNAANI composite film in acidic electrolytes containing potassium ions were comparatively higher than that of the pure PB film. The functional composite film is expected for use in the system capable of effective accumulation of charge, and for the analytical applications towards the reduction of hydrogen peroxide due to its high electrocatalytic activity.
Homogeneous and Nanogranular Prussian Blue to Enable Long-Term-Stable Electrochromic Devices

Abstract:The increasing demand for the state-of-the-art electrochromic devices has received great interest in synthesizing Prussian blue (PB) nanoparticles with a uniform diameter that exhibit excellent electrochromism, electrochemistry, and cyclability. Herein, we report the controllable synthesis of sub-100 nm PB nanoparticles via the coprecipitation method. The diameter of PB nanoparticles can be modulated by adjusting the reactant concentration, the selection of a chelator, and their purification. The self-assembled nanogranular thin films, homogeneously fabricated by using optimized PB nanoparticles with an average diameter of 50 nm as building blocks via the blade coating technique enable excellent performance with a large optical modulation of 80% and a high coloration efficiency of 417.79 cm2 C-1. It is also demonstrated by in situ and ex situ observations that the nanogranular PB thin films possess outstanding structural and electrochemical reversibility. Furthermore, such nanogranular PB thin films can enjoy the enhanced long-term cycling stability of the PB-WO3 complementary electrochromic devices having a 91.4% optical contrast retention after 16,000 consecutive cycles. This work provides a newly and industrially compatible approach to producing a complementary electrochromic device with extraordinary durability for various practical applications.

Abstract:<p>Herewith, a series of Prussian () hybrids were directly grown on FTO substrate by simple, one-step hydrothermal method in different dosage of aqueous dispersion of carbon dots. Being a new class of carbon allotropes, Carbon dot (C-dot) hybridized with Prussian blue (PB) will enhance the electroactivity of the hybrid film. It was found that the incorporation of C-dots influences the appearance color of the sample, the microstrucutre and electrochromic performance of the hybrids. Raman and XPS analysis revealed structural changes of the hybrid with different dosage of C-dots. The hybrid film exhibits a high-contrast electrochromism, fast response time and highly reversible nature compared to the sample without C-dots. This improved performance of hybrids can be attributed to the role of reinforced C-dots in facilitating electron transport and ionic motion in the hybrid film. Thus, the hybrid film provides a versatile and promising application towards the fabrication of smart windows.</p>

Abstract:Prussian blue (PB) particles with the size of ca. 50 nm were immobilized onto a gold electrode using cysteine as a bridge between the gold surface and the nanoparticles by the self-assembled method. The PB modified electrode exhibited two couples of voltammetric peaks with E0′A=0.210V and E0′B=0.236V (E0′=(E0′a+E0′c)/2) vs SCE in 1.0 M KCl electrolyte at the scan rate of 5.0mVs−1. The number of particles adsorbed on the electrode surface is 4.54×1010 per cm2 (equivalent to 1.00×10−8molcm−2) according to the integrated Faraday charge. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies on the PB particles showed that the Bragg peaks widened owing to the small size effect of the particles, and the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed that the particles are nanosized particles. The electrochemical behavior was explained by the difference of nature between the surface atoms and the inner atoms.

Abstract:Metal cyanide coordination compounds are recognized as promising candidates for broad applications because of their tailorable and adjustable frameworks. Developing the nanostructure of a coordination compound may be an effective way to enhance the performance of that material in application-based roles. A controllable preferential etching method is described for synthesis of monocrystalline Prussian blue analogue (PBA) nanoframes, without the use of organic additives. The PBA nanoframes show remarkable rate performance and cycling stability for sodium/lithium ion insertion/extraction.

Abstract:This work presents a photoinducedly electrochemical preparation of Prussian blue from a single sodium nitroprusside and insertion of cetyltrimethylammonium cations into Prussian blue as counter ions. The product of photoinducedly electrochemical reactions has a couple of voltammetric peaks at E degrees = 0.266 V in 0.2 mol l(-1) KCl solution, the measurements of X-ray powder diffraction and FT-IR spectroscopy show that it is Prussian blue (PB). The formation mechanism of a pre-photochemical reaction and subsequent electrochemical reaction is suggested. The cyclic voltammetric treatment of the freshly as-prepared PB film in 1.0 mmol l(-1) cetyltrimethylammonium (CTA) bromide solution leads to the insertion of cetyltrimethylammonium cations into the channels of Prussian blue, which substitutes for potassium ions as counter ions in Prussian blue. The Prussian blue containing CTA counter ions shows two couples of voltammetric peaks at E degrees = -0.106V and E degrees = 0.249 V in 0.2 mol l(-1) KCl solution containing 1.0 mmol l(-1) cetyltrimethylammonium bromide. Compared with the electrochemical behaviors of KFeFe(CN)(6) in 0.1 mol l(-1) KOH alkali solution, CTAFeFe(CN)(6) shows relatively durable voltammetric currents due to the hydrophobic effects of cetyltrimethylammonium. The diffusion coefficients for CTA and potassium cations were estimated to be D-CTA 1.25 x 10(-12) cm(2) s(-1). D-K 2.59 x 10(-12) cm(2) s(-1), respectively. The peak current of electro-catalytic oxidization on hydrogen peroxide showed a linear dependence from 6.59 x 10(-6) to 2.20 x 10(-4) mol l(-1) with R = 0.99947 (n=8). The linear regression equation was I-p (mA) = 0.82949 + 0.00594C (mu mol l(-1)) with errors of +/- 7.92833 x 10(-5) for the slope and +/- 0.01085 for the intercept with the detection limit of 1.46 x 10(-6) mol l(-1). Abstract:Prussian blue analogs (PBAs), the oldest artificial cyanide-based coordination polymers, possess open framework structures, large specific surface areas, uniform metal active sites, and tunable composition, showing significant perspective in electrochemical energy storage. These electrochemically active materials have also been converted to various functional metal containing nanomaterials, including carbon encapsulated metals/metal alloys, metal oxides, metal sulfides, metal phosphides, etc. originating from the multi-element compositions as well as elaborate structure design. In this paper, a comprehensive review will be presented on the recent progresses in the development of PBA frameworks and their derivatives based electrode materials and electrocatalysts for electrochemical energy storage and conversion. In particular, it will focus on the synthesis of representative nanostructures, the structure design, and figure out the correlation between nanomaterials structure and electrochemical performance. Lastly, critical scientific challenges in this research area are also discussed and perspective directions for the future research in this field are provided, in order to provide a brand new vision into the further development of novel active materials for the next-generation advanced electrochemical devices.

Abstract:The compound Prussian Blue (PB), and its reduced form Prussian White (PW) are nowadays considered, in applied and fundamental research groups, as potential materials for sustainable energy storage devices. In this work, these compounds were prepared by potentiostatic electrochemical synthesis, by using different deposition voltages and thicknesses. Thick, compact and uniform layers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy. Results have shown a well-defined transition voltage for growing Prussian Blue phases and a strong dependence of the morphology/growing orientation of the samples as a function of applied potential and thickness. For the negative potential tested of −0.10 V vs. SCE, a mixture of cubic and rhombohedral phases was observed.

Abstract:Background: Graphite pencil drawn on paper electrode (PDP) is one of the low cost electrodes due to the good conductivity. Prussian blue (PB) has been widely used in sensors due to its high electrocatalytic activity toward H2O2 reduction at relatively low potential avoiding the interferences of other biological species. The major drawback of PB is their relatively low operational stability since hydroxyl ions causes the collapse of Fe-CN-Fe of PB bonds. Interestingly, a combination of magnetic nanoparticles, Fe3O4 with PB would not only enhance Fe3O4 properties, but also improves the operational stability of PB. In this work, a disposable PDP modified with Fe3O4-PB as sensor was successfully fabricated. Methods: To prepare PDP, lead pencil 4B and Whatman filter paper were used. Briefly, Whatman filter paper was cut into small slides then by hand abrasion of the pencil on the paper surface. Melted candle was used to cover part of the electrode to adjust the working electrode zone. Fe3O4 was prepared by the hydrothermal technique. Transmission electron microscope, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Contact angle (OCA 15 plus) and electrochemical workstation (CHI660e) were used to characterize both PDP and Fe3O4-PB nanoparticles. Results: The PDP possessed excellent electrochemical properties and good reproducibility. Furthermore, the Fe3O4-PB / PDP electrode was quite stable even in neutral and lower alkaline solutions with good electro-catalysis. Conclusion: Both Fe3O4-PB nanoparticles and PDP can be considered as promising candidate materials for fabricating electrochemical sensors, especially in the resource limited condition.
