Abstract:Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a versatile chemical and a promising carbon-free energy carrier. The selective synthesis of H2O2 from water and oxygen is considered to be a secure and energy-efficient production method, yet the design of ideal electrocatalysts with the desired activity, selectivity and stability remains challenging. Recent progress in the development of highly selective and active carbon-based catalysts is summarized, including the design principles for active catalysts, tailoring active sites on the catalyst surface, and catalyst structure engineering. Fundamental principles of oxygen reduction reaction mechanisms are presented. Novel strategies, including heteroatom doping, surface/interface engineering, and supported single metal atoms, are highlighted. We believe that by appropriately changing the components and engineering the microenvironment of the active sites, the rational design of efficient catalysts with long-term stability can be achieved, bridging the gap between theoretical prediction and experimental observation. Finally, prospects for future research are provided.
Selective Electrochemical Generation of Hydrogen Peroxide from Oxygen Reduction on Atomically Dispersed Platinum

Abstract:A catalyst with an atomically dispersed metal center may provide an ideal structure for the electrochemical synthesis of H2O2 due to the distinct chemoselectivity. Herein, we report a simple electrochemical method to prepare atomically dispersed Pt catalyst on a sulfur-doped carbon structure (Pt1-meso-S-C) by underpotential deposition (UPD) of copper atoms followed by a galvanic replacement reaction under ambient conditions. Sulfur doping in the carbon structure shows a strong affinity to metal atoms, resulting in underpotential deposition (UPD) of a single copper adatom at a potential positive to its thermodynamic equilibrium potential. Galvanic replacement of the UPD Cu by platinum precursor leads to the formation of a single-atom Pt catalyst on a sulfur-doped carbon structure. This Pt1-meso-S-C acts as a highly selective catalyst for the electrochemical reduction of O-2 into H2O2 without promoting consecutive H2O2 decomposition. However, the catalysts (Ptn-meso-S-C and Pt/C) with the platinum ensemble sites exhibit a four-electron pathway for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the consecutive H2O2 decomposition. This work demonstrates that the reaction mechanism can be adjusted by the dispersion of metal catalysts.

Abstract:Precise electrochemical synthesis under ambient conditions has provided emerging opportunities for renewable energy utilization. Among many promising systems, the production of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) from the cathodic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has attracted considerable interest in past decades due to the increasing market demands and the vital role of ORR in the electrocatalysis field. This work describes recent advances in cathodic materials for H2O2 synthesis from 2e- ORR. By using Pt as a stereotype, the tuning knobs are overviewed, including the intrinsic binding strength of oxygenated species, the intermediate diffusion path and the isolation of Pt–Pt ensembles that enable 2e- ORR pathway from 4e- total reduction. This knowledge is successfully applied to other transition metal systems and leads to the discovery of more efficient alloy catalysts with balanced improvement on both activity and selectivity. In addition, mesostructure engineering and heteroatoms doping strategies on carbon‐based materials, which significantly boost the H2O2 production efficiency as compared to intact carbon sites, are also reviewed. Finally, future directions and challenges of transferring developed catalysts from lab scale tests to pilot plant operations are briefly outlooked.

Abstract:Nonelectrochemical hydrogen peroxide direct synthesis (HPDS) under ambient conditions is an environmentally benign and energy-efficient process that produces a green oxidizer. Despite its industrial importance, the reaction mechanism of HPDS is still controversial, even for the prototypical catalyst Pd. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations with a comprehensive consideration of entropic and solvation effects reveal that the conventionally accepted Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism fails to explain why H2O2 production dominates over H2O production, which was experimentally reported. Inspired by the recently suggested heterolytic mechanism that involves electron and proton transfer at Pd catalysts, we propose a new electrochemical DFT model that is applicable for nonelectrochemical systems where a protonation intrinsically occurs. Our model is based on combining the Butler-Volmer equation and constant potential DFT with hybrid explicit-implicit solvent treatments. Application of this model to Pd(111) surfaces produces accurate descriptions of the activation barriers of both H2O2 and H2O production (within only ~0.1 eV of experimentally measured values). The heterolytic mechanism has a lower barrier for the protonation steps for H2O2 production than the nonelectrochemical hydrogenation steps, leading to advantageous kinetics for H2O2 production over H2O production. This work is the first theoretical and computational study supporting the heterolytic H2O2 production mechanism, and it resolves the unanswered discrepancies between previous experimental and DFT results. We expect that these results will readily help the systematic development of improved catalysts for H2O2 synthesis.

Abstract:Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a widely used strong oxidant, and its traditional preparation methods, anthraquinone method, and direct synthesis method, have many drawbacks. The method of producing H2O2 by two‐electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e‐ ORR) is considered an alternative strategy for the traditional anthraquinone method due to its high efficiency, energy saving, and environmental friendliness, but it remains a big challenge. In this review, we have described the mechanism of ORR and the principle of electrocatalytic performance testing, and have summarized the standard performance evaluation techniques for electrocatalysts to produce H2O2. Secondly, according to the theoretical calculation and experimental results, several kinds of efficient electrocatalysts are introduced. It is concluded that noble metal‐based materials, carbon‐based materials, non‐noble metal composites, and single‐atom catalysts are the preferred catalyst materials for the preparation of H2O2 by 2e‐ ORR. Finally, the advantages and novelty of 2e‐ ORR compared with traditional methods for H2O2 production, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of the above‐mentioned high‐efficiency catalysts, are summarized. The application prospect and development direction of high‐efficiency catalysts for H2O2 production by 2e‐ ORR has been prospected, which is of great significance for promoting the electrochemical yield of H2O2 and developing green chemical production.

Room-Temperature Wet Chemical Synthesis of Au NPs/TiH2/Nanocarved Ti Self-Supported Electrocatalysts for Highly Efficient H2 Generation

Abstract:Self-supported electrocatalysts are a new class of materials exhibiting high catalytic performance for various electrochemical processes and can be directly equipped in energy conversion devices. We present here, for the first time, sparse Au NPs self-supported on etched Ti (nanocarved Ti substrate self-supported with TiH2) as promising catalysts for the electrochemical generation of hydrogen (H2) in KOH solutions. Cleaned, as-polished Ti substrates were etched in highly concentrated sulfuric acid solutions without and with 0.1 M NH4F at room temperature for 15 min. These two etching processes yielded a thin layer of TiH2 (the corrosion product of the etching process) self-supported on nanocarved Ti substrates with different morphologies. While F--free etching process led to formation of parallel channels (average width: 200 nm), where each channel consists of an array of rounded cavities (average width: 150 nm), etching in the presence of F- yielded Ti surface carved with nanogrooves (average width: 100 nm) in parallel orientation. Au NPs were then grown in situ (self-supported) on such etched surfaces via immersion in a standard gold solution at room temperature without using stabilizers or reducing agents, producing Au NPs/TiH2/nanostructured Ti catalysts. These materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). GIXRD confirmed the formation of Au2Ti phase, thus referring to strong chemical interaction between the supported Au NPs and the substrate surface (also evidenced from XPS) as well as a titanium hydride phase of chemical composition TiH2. Electrochemical measurements in 0.1 M KOH solution revealed outstanding hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalytic activity for our synthesized catalysts, with Au NPs/TiH2/nanogrooved Ti catalyst being the best one among them. It exhibited fast kinetics for the HER with onset potentials as low as -22 mV vs. RHE, high exchange current density of 0.7 mA cm-2, and a Tafel slope of 113 mV dec-1. These HER electrochemical kinetic parameters are very close to those measured here for a commercial Pt/C catalyst (onset potential: -20 mV, Tafel slope: 110 mV dec-1, and exchange current density: 0.75 mA cm-2). The high catalytic activity of these materials was attributed to the catalytic impacts of both TiH2 phase and self-supported Au NPs (active sites for the catalytic reduction of water to H2), in addition to their nanostructured features which provide a large-surface area for the HER.

Abstract:Hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O[Formula: see text] is an important chemical with wide fields of applications in the chemical industry, medicine and environmental protection. The preparation of H 2 O 2 by the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) via the two-electron pathway has the advantages of simple operation and environmental friendliness. Nevertheless, the kinetics of ORR is relatively slow, and the energy efficiency of electrochemical synthesis of H 2 O 2 is seriously limited by the competitive four-electron pathway. Therefore, the electrosynthesis of H 2 O 2 requires an electrocatalyst with both high catalytic activity and selectivity. In this study, Cu nanoparticles supported on carbon composites (Cu/C) were proposed and had been applied as the catalysts for the electrochemical synthesis of H 2 O 2 . Taking advantage of the cross-linking reaction between sodium alginate (SA) and metal ions, Cu nanoparticles were directly supported on carbon materials. The porous structure of carbon materials and the introduction of Cu improved the H 2 O 2 selectivity of the catalysts. In O 2 -saturated 0.1[Formula: see text]M KOH, the optimized catalyst exhibited good activity with a selectivity of 88–90% in the potential range of 0.2–0.6[Formula: see text]V for the electrosynthesis of H 2 O 2 , and the selectivity remained 70% after 6[Formula: see text]h of operation.

Accelerated Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer via Engineering Palladium Sub-Nanoclusters for Scalable Electrosynthesis of Hydrogen Peroxide

Abstract:Electrosynthesis of H2O2 from oxygen reduction reaction via a two-electron pathway is vital as an alternative for the energy-intensive anthraquinone process. However, this process is largely hindered in neutral and alkaline conditions due to sluggish kinetics associated with the transformation of intermediate O2* into OOH* via proton-coupled electron transfer sourced from slow water dissociation. Herein, we developed Pd sub-nanoclusters on the nickel ditelluride nanosheets (Pd SNCs/NiTe2) to enhance the performance of H2O2 electrosynthesis. The newly-developed Pd SNCs/NiTe2 exhibited a H2O2 selectivity of as high as 99 % and a positive shift of onset potential up to 0.81 V. Combined theoretical calculations and experimental studies (e.g., X-ray absorption and attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectra measurements) revealed that the Pd sub-nanoclusters supported by NiTe2 nanosheets efficiently reduced the energy barrier of water dissociation to generate more protons, facilitating the proton feeding kinetics. When used in a flow cell, Pd SNCs/NiTe2 cathode efficiently produced H2O2 with a maximum yield rate of 1.75 mmol h-1 cm-2 and a current efficiency of 95 % at 100 mA cm-2. Further, an accumulated H2O2 concentration of 1.43 mol L-1 was reached after 10 hours of continuous electrolysis, showing the potential for practical H2O2 electrosynthesis.

Abstract:As a clean energy source, hydrogen plays a critical role in the global mission to achieve carbon neutrality. Among varied hydrogen production techniques, water electrolysis driven by clean energy, such as solar or wind energy, is the most promising and viable option, with the advantages of celerity, high efficiency, cleanliness, and sustainability. However, this process necessitates a highly active and durable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalyst to enhance the overall reaction efficiency. This article thoroughly reviews the recent development of electrocatalysts exhibiting high-performance HER. In particular, a comprehensive look at noble metals platinum (Pt), ruthenium (Ru), iridium (Ir), and non-noble metals, including sulfides, carbides, nitrides and phosphides is taken. Synthesis strategies, methods for enhancing performance, and the correlation between structure, composition, and catalytic performance are discussed. We also pay particular attention to density functional theory (DFT) calculations to reveal the mechanisms behind the improvement of HER performance. Finally, the critical challenges associated with electrochemical water splitting and propose coping strategies are presented.

Abstract:Abstract Direct hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) electrosynthesis via the two-electron oxygen reduction reaction is a sustainable alternative to the traditional energy-intensive anthraquinone technology. However, high-performance and scalable electrocatalysts with industrial-relevant production rates remain to be challenging, partially due to insufficient atomic level understanding in catalyst design. Here we utilize theoretical approaches to identify transition-metal single-site catalysts for two-electron oxygen reduction using the *OOH binding energy as a descriptor. The theoretical predictions are then used as guidance to synthesize the desired cobalt single-site catalyst with a O-modified Co-(pyrrolic N) 4 configuration that can achieve industrial-relevant current densities up to 300 mA cm − 2 with 96–100% Faradaic efficiencies for H 2 O 2 production at a record rate of 11,527 mmol h − 1 g cat − 1 . Here, we show the feasibility and versatility of metal single-site catalyst design using various commercial carbon and cobalt phthalocyanine as starting materials and the high applicability for H 2 O 2 electrosynthesis in acidic, neutral and alkaline electrolytes.

Abstract:Abstract Despite progress in small scale electrocatalytic production of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) using a rotating ring-disk electrode, further work is needed to develop a non-toxic, selective, and stable O 2 -to-H 2 O 2 electrocatalyst for realizing continuous on-site production of neutral hydrogen peroxide. We report ultrasmall and monodisperse colloidal PtP 2 nanocrystals that achieve H 2 O 2 production at near zero-overpotential with near unity H 2 O 2 selectivity at 0.27 V vs. RHE. Density functional theory calculations indicate that P promotes hydrogenation of OOH* to H 2 O 2 by weakening the Pt-OOH* bond and suppressing the dissociative OOH* to O* pathway. Atomic layer deposition of Al 2 O 3 prevents NC aggregation and enables application in a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) with a maximum r(H 2 O 2 ) of 2.26 mmol h −1 cm −2 and a current efficiency of 78.8% even at a high current density of 150 mA cm −2 . Catalyst stability enables an accumulated neutral H 2 O 2 concentration in 600 mL of 3.0 wt% (pH = 6.6).

Abstract:Hydrogen peroxide is a widely used and important chemical in industry. A two-electron electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction (2e– ORR) is a clean and on-site method for H2O2 production. Here, we report metal-free catalysts (mesoporous carbon hollow spheres, MCHS) for high-efficiency H2O2 production in neutral electrolytes (0.1 M PBS). The selectivity of H2O2 on MCHS catalysts is higher than 90% at a wide range of potentials (0.35–0.62 V), and it can reach 99.9% at a potential of 0.57 V. These catalysts show some of the best performances for H2O2 production in neutral electrolytes. It is preferable to develop H2O2 catalysts in a neutral environment, as the pH of the stabilizers used for H2O2 is also close to neutral. The outstanding activity of our catalyst comes from a combination of factors such as suitable porosity, the content of oxygen functional groups, and the types of different species of oxygen functional groups. First-principles simulations show that a catalyst with suitable mixed oxygen and COOH functional groups plays an important role in the catalytic formation of H2O2. Abstract:Hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ) is a green oxidizer widely involved in a vast number of chemical reactions. Electrochemical reduction of oxygen to H2 O2 constitutes an environmentally friendly synthetic route. However, the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is kinetically sluggish and undesired water serves as the main product on most electrocatalysts. Therefore, electrocatalysts with high reactivity and selectivity are highly required for H2 O2 electrosynthesis. In this work, a synergistic strategy is proposed for the preparation of H2 O2 electrocatalysts with high ORR reactivity and high H2 O2 selectivity. A Co-Nx -C site and oxygen functional group comodified carbon-based electrocatalyst (named as Co-POC-O) is synthesized. The Co-POC-O electrocatalyst exhibits excellent catalytic performance for H2 O2 electrosynthesis in O2 -saturated 0.10 m KOH with a high selectivity over 80% as well as very high reactivity with an ORR potential at 1 mA cm-2 of 0.79 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). Further mechanism study identifies that the Co-Nx -C sites and oxygen functional groups contribute to the reactivity and selectivity for H2 O2 electrogeneration, respectively. This work affords not only an emerging strategy to design H2 O2 electrosynthesis catalysts with remarkable performance, but also the principles of rational combination of multiple active sites for green and sustainable synthesis of chemicals through electrochemical processes.

Abstract:Water electrolysis is a sustainable approach for hydrogen production by using electricity from clean energy sources. However, both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) associated with water electrolysis are kinetically sluggish, leading to low efficiency in corresponding electrolysis devices. In addition, current electrocatalysts that can catalyze both HER and OER to practical rates require noble metals such as platinum that are low in abundance and high in price, severely limiting commercialization. As a result, the development of high-performance and cost-effective non-noble metal electrocatalysts to replace noble ones has intensified. Based on this, this review will comprehensively present recent research in the design, synthesis, characterization and performance validation/optimization of non-noble metal HER electrocatalysts and analyze corresponding catalytic mechanisms. Moreover, several important types of non-noble metal electrocatalysts including zero-dimensional, one-dimensional, two-dimensional and three-dimensional materials are presented with an emphasis on morphology/structure, synergetic interaction between metal and support, catalytic property and HER activity/stability.
