Abstract:Advanced functional materials, drives and transmissions, sensors and mechanisms provide solid foundations for developing intelligent robots, for which modelling and simulation tools have contributed greatly to these developments, and facilitated deployments and applications of intelligent robots. Motivated by rapid developments of sensor fusion, intelligent control and machine learning tools and their widely availability at low cost, this special issue aims at disseminating new modelling and simulation methods for developing intelligent robotic systems and their applications. With the emerging applications to robotics, this focused section competitively selects the 10 research papers covering a spectrum of modeling of novel single robots, human-robot interactive systems, and even robotic automation process, which includes modeling of biped and wearable robots, parallel mechanisms, autonomous robots, and robot-environment interaction, as well as modeling with robot visions.

Abstract:We are happy to introduce this Special Issue, "Intelligent Surfaces for 5G and Beyond," to the readers of IEEE Wireless Communications. The objective of this Special Issue is to report on the latest, most promising research advances, major challenges, and recent advancements in modeling, analysis, design, and implementation of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) empowered wireless communication networks, as well as point out new research directions in this emerging research area. After a rigorous review process, 12 articles have been accepted, and they cover many subtopics within this research field. In particular, some of the articles focus on mobile edge computing, while others focus on the applications of RISs on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), high-speed trains, and free space optical communication systems. The remaining articles focus on the optimization and channel estimation, as well as on future sixth-generation (6G) wireless communication systems. Many fine papers could not be included in this Special Issue due to space constraints. We anticipate seeing them in other publication venues.

Abstract:This Innovative Practice Full Paper presents our methodology and tools for introducing competition in the electrical engineering curriculum to accelerate education and innovation in wireless communications. Software radio or software-defined radio (SDR) enables wireless technology, systems and standards education where the student acts as the radio developer or engineer. This is still a huge endeavor because of the complexity of current wireless systems and the diverse student backgrounds. We suggest creating a competition among student teams to potentiate creativity while leveraging the SDR development methodology and open-source tools to facilitate cooperation. The proposed student challenge follows the European UEFA Champions League format, which includes a qualification phase followed by the elimination round or playoffs. The students are tasked to build an SDR transmitter and receiver following the guidelines of the long-term evolution standard. The metric is system performance. After completing this course, the students will be able to (1) analyze alternative radio design options and argue about their benefits and drawbacks and (2) contribute to the evolution of wireless standards. We discuss our experiences and lessons learned with particular focus on the suitability of the proposed teaching and evaluation methodology and conclude that competition in the electrical engineering classroom can spur innovation.

Abstract:It is our pleasure to share with you this Special Issue, which brings together a diverse set of articles dealing with various aspects of semantic and goal-oriented communications, providing a snapshot of research activities in this highly active research area. Wireless communications and networking research has traditionally focused on improving the capacity and throughput of the underlying wireless network. However, recent explosion in data-driven machine learning applications and their reliance on huge datasets collected by edge devices have raised legitimate concerns that the increasing data traffic might soon overwhelm the capacity of current networks despite ongoing efforts to increase their capacity and efficiency. Also, most of the edge intelligence applications impose stringent delay constraints, which cannot be met by naive forwarding of data samples for processing at the receiver end. This made it obvious to researchers in both academia and industry that it is essential to analyze the "value" or "relevance" of collected data, and filter and prioritize the delivery of data based on its value/relevance as well as the wireless channel and network conditions. In this context, data value will be closely connected to the underlying signals and processes that generate the data, e.g., text, image, video, or sensor data, and what the receiver intends to do with the received data. This subjectivity of data value makes semantic and goal-oriented communication a rather elusive research topic, which has led to both an increasingly rich and active area of investigation, but also a controversial one, mainly due to the lack of clear and widely agreed-upon definitions of some of the core concepts and formulations. Despite these disagreements, there is almost unanimous consensus on the importance and potential impact of this line of investigation for the design of future communication systems and networks.

Abstract:Issues-based science education represents a suite of approaches for science teaching and learning that prioritizes contextualization of learning experiences in real-world issues that are societal problems. These approaches have grown in prominence in terms of research and classroom applications over the last decade, but issues-based teaching remains challenging and has not been fully realized in educational settings. The gap between the positive potential of issues-based science education and the reality of science learning spaces creates opportunities for innovation. The purpose of this special issue is to explore ways in which educational technologies can be used to promote innovations that narrow this gap. This introduction to the special issue offers a brief overview of how technologies could be used to enhance issues-based teaching and summarizes trends that emerge across the seven articles that make up the special issue.

Abstract:ObjectivesAs technological innovations continue to emerge, the range of potential applications for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) is widening. In this article, we introduce a special issue on technological innovations in the education and treatment of persons with IDD.MethodFor this special issue, we sought empirical studies, literature reviews, and program descriptions that focused on the use of technology (e.g., artificial intelligence, virtual reality, telehealth, portable smart devices, advanced language models) to improve the quality of life of people with IDD.ResultsArticles accepted for this special issue included (a) intervention studies and systematic reviews focused on applications of technology to improve daily living skills, social interactions, and communication, as well as mobility and occupational skills; (b) program descriptions involving telehealth service delivery to support families and train clinicians; (c) an empirical study utilizing technology to measure biophysical variables (heart rate variability) to inform behavioral assessment; and (d) a commentary on the potential of advanced language models.ConclusionTechnological advances continue to inspire research aimed at improving the quality of life of people with IDD.

The selected articles make up a virtual collection, composing a Virtual Special Issue (VSI). Although the readers do not have a physical special issue due to the dispersed publication of articles, the articles of each VSI are organized and made available in dedicated sections on TAP's website, along with other supporting material, including videos, featured articles' content, and authors' stories, to further showcase the research presented in the articles of the VSI.
