Abstract:Electrochemical wastewater treatment using thin-film diamond electrode has been applied in industrial wastewater treatment where highly toxic organic compounds are present. In these applications, reduction of electric energy consumption and recovery of waste heat energy are key factors that impact the competitiveness of electrochemical wastewater treatment. This paper presents design, fabrication and testing of the electrochemical reactor for wastewater treatment along with hydrogen production and waste heat recovery. Experiments were carried out to measure the decrease of COD concentration on anode, the simultaneous formation of hydrogen on cathode and the increase of electrolyte temperature. The impact of electric current density on electrolyte temperature was studied. Experimental study and energy efficiency analysis on hydrogen production and waste heat recovery have shown that the technology presented in this study is feasible, allowing us to achieve both economic and environmental benefits.

Abstract:Boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrodes have been widely used in water treatment, e.g., degradation of antibiotics and pigments for water purification. Hydrogen peroxide production by two-electron electrochemical oxidation of water is a green and attractive method that has the potential to replace the conventional anthraquinone autoxidation (AO) process. In this study, BDD films were prepared on single-crystal silicon wafers by using hot-filament chemical vapor deposition (HFCVD) technique. Then, dense tubular nanostructure (nanotubes) arrays were prepared on the BDD films employing inductively coupled plasma (ICP) etching. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) proved the formation of oxygen-terminated nanostructures, which was ascribed to the oxygen plasma and the self-masking. The length of diamond nanotubes as well as the root diameter increased gradually and non-linearly with the increase of etching time. It was indicated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) analysis that the effective active area of the electrodes increased after etching, and variations of resulting reaction performance were observed. The oxygen-terminated and nanostructured BDD electrode obtained by etching with the optimized parameters features better electrocatalytic performance, with reduced oxidation potential and 46.8 % higher Faraday Efficiency (FE) for hydrogen peroxide production, compared to the original BDD sample. Therefore, the manufacturing of nanostructures is an effective method to improve the efficiency of BDD water oxidation for the production of hydrogen peroxide.

Abstract:Diamond shows several extreme outstanding properties, such as high Young's modulus, low surface roughness and chemical inertness et al. Thus, it has been used extensively in many fields including microelectromechanical systems, electron ﬁeld emitters and electrochemistry. The diamond film will be conductive after boron-doping, and therefore it can be used as a popular candidate anode for the electrochemical oxidation of organic containments in aqueous solution since it shows a wide potential window, low background current, high electrochemical stability and corrosion resistance. Water recycling would be the most realistic and economical way for human being in confined space station where it is cut off from the atmosphere for a long time. In our work, hot filament chemical vapor deposition (HFCVD) method was employed to fabricate microcrystalline and nanocrystalline diamond films using only hydrogen and methane as precursor. Different factors such as methane concentration, substrate temperature and reaction pressure were studied and it reveals that methane concentration is the major contribution on the morphology change. The resulted morphology of diamond films changed from microcrystalline to nanocrystalline when the methane concentration increased from 2% to 10%. Boron-doped microcrystalline and nanocrystalline diamond films were both used as anodes for the electrochemical degradation of human urine. They show comparable efficiency on the degradation of organic compounds on both electrodes, and while show a small difference on the oxidation of chlorine ions and ammonia ions. However, the nanocrystalline diamond anode shows a longer lifetime due to the lower surface roughness in comparison with the microcrystalline diamond anode. Herein, the nanocrystalline diamond anode is promising for the industrial applications in the electrochemical oxidation of wastewater in the future.

Abstract:Boron-doped diamond (BDD) thin film electrodes have great application potential in water treatment. However, the high electrode energy consumption due to high resistance directly limits the application range of existing BDD electrodes. In this paper, the BDD/graphene/BDD (DGD) sandwich structure electrode was prepared, which effectively improved the conductivity of the electrode. Meanwhile, the sandwich electrode can effectively avoid the degradation of electrode performance caused by the large amount of non-diamond carbon introduced by heavy doping, such as the reduction of the electrochemical window and the decrease of physical and chemical stability. The microstructure and composition of the film were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Raman spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Then, the degradation performance of citric acid (CA), catechol, and tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) by DGD electrodes was systematically studied by total organic carbon (TOC) and Energy consumption per unit TOC removal (ECTOC). Compared with the single BDD electrode, the new DGD electrode improves the mobility of the electrode and reduces the mass transfer resistance by 1/3, showing better water treatment performance. In the process of dealing with Citric acid, the step current of the DGD electrode was 1.35 times that of the BDD electrode, and the energy utilization ratio of the DGD electrode was 2.4 times that of the BDD electrode. The energy consumption per unit TOC removal (ECTOC) of the DGD electrode was lower than that of BDD, especially Catechol, which was reduced to 66.9% of BDD. The DGD sandwich electrode, as a new electrode material, has good electrochemical degradation performance and can be used for high-efficiency electrocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants.

Abstract:As one of the most promising approaches to producing high purity hydrogen (H2), electrochemical water splitting powered by the renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydroelectric power has attracted considerable interest over the past decade. However, the water electrolysis process is seriously hampered by the sluggish electrode reaction kinetics, especially the four‐electron oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at the anode side, which induces a high reaction overpotential. At present, the emerging hybrid electrochemical water splitting strategy has been proposed by integrating thermodynamically favorable electro‐oxidation reactions with hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at the cathode, providing a new opportunity for energy‐efficient H2 production. To achieve highly efficient and cost‐effective hybrid water splitting (HWS) towards large‐scale practical H2 production, much work has been continuously done to exploit the alternative anodic oxidation reactions and cutting‐edge electrocatalysts. This review will focus on recent developments on electrochemical H2 production coupled with alternative oxidation reactions, including the choice of anodic substrates, the investigation on electrocatalytic materials, and the deep understanding of the underlying reaction mechanisms. Finally, some insights into the scientific challenges now standing in the way of future advancement of the hybrid water electrolysis technique are shared, in the hope of inspiring further innovative efforts in this rapidly growing field. Abstract:The high energy consumption of traditional water splitting to produce hydrogen is mainly due to complex oxygen evolution reaction (OER), where low-economic-value O2 gas is generated. Meanwhile, cogeneration of H2 and O2 may result in the formation of an explosive H2/O2 gas mixture due to gas crossover. Considering these factors, a favorable anodic oxidation reaction is employed to replace OER, which not only reduces the voltage for H2 production at the cathode and avoids H2/O2 gas mixture but also generates value-added products at the anode. In recent years, this innovative strategy that combines anodic oxidation for H2 production has received intensive attention in the field of electrocatalysis. In this review, the latest research progress of a coupled hydrogen production system with pollutant degradation/upgrading is systematically introduced. Firstly, wastewater purification via anodic reaction, which produces free radicals instead of OER for pollutant degradation, is systematically presented. Then, the coupled system that allows for pollutant refining into high-value-added products combined with hydrogen production is displayed. Thirdly, the photoelectrical system for pollutant degradation and upgrade are briefly introduced. Finally, this review also discusses the challenges and future perspectives of this coupled system.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic water splitting, powered by clean energy sources, represents a sustainable method for hydrogen (H2) production. Although extensive research has concentrated on performance indicators like current density and faradaic efficiency, the widespread adoption of electrocatalytic water splitting encounters challenges primarily due to high cell voltages and electricity costs. These issues stem from the sluggish kinetics of the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Various efforts to replace sluggish OER with thermodynamically more favorable anodic reactions have been demonstrated as pathbreaking strategies for energy-efficient H2 evolution. In this concept, we aim to comprehensively explore alternative electrochemical oxidation reactions combined with H2 evolution and propose insights for the future development of cost-effective integrated electrolysis for H2 production. Hydrogen shows promise for a sustainable energy future, but current electrolysis faces challenges due to the high energy demand of the anode oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Abstract:Electrochemical two-electron oxygen reduction represents a highly desirable and sustainable future strategy for the mass production of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) for applications from large-scale chemicals production to portable sanitation. However, the industrial translation of this process is challenged by poor selectivity and durability due to the damaging flooding of the reactive three-phase interface of air-diffusion electrodes by rapid electrowetting under high current density operation conditions. Here, we demonstrate a concept of anti-electrowetting carbon film electrode with self-sustained aeration by structurally discontinuously fracturing conventional planar electrocatalyst films assembled using just commercially available carbon particles. The dense through-microcracks formed in the coating-fabricated carbon black-polytetrafluoroethylene active layer counterintuitively present robust underwater hydrophobicity. This allows self-driven diffusion of oxygen from open air to the active interface, while enabling electrodes to operate at industry-relevant current densities (100–300 mA/cm2) with unprecedented selectivity (>97%) and durability (>200 h) without failure. The demonstrated anti-electrowetting carbon film with self-sustained aeration is highly promising for developing next-generation cheap and scalable metal-free electrodes for industry-scale H2O2 electrosynthesis.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic water splitting using renewable energy is widely considered as a clean and sustainable way to produce hydrogen as an ideal energy fuel for the future. Electrocatalysts are indispensable elements for large-scale water electrolysis, which can efficiently accelerate electrochemical reactions occurring at both ends. Benefitting from high specific surface area, well-defined void space, and tunable chemical compositions, hollow nanostructures can be applied as promising candidates of direct electrocatalysts or supports for loading internal or external electrocatalysts. Herein, some recent progress in the structural design of micro-/nanostructured hollow materials as advanced electrocatalysts for water splitting is summarized. First, the design principles and corresponding strategies toward highly effective hollow electrocatalysts for oxygen/hydrogen evolution reactions are highlighted. Afterward, an overview of current reports about hollow electrocatalysts with diverse architectural designs and functionalities is given, including direct hollow electrocatalysts with single-shelled, multi-shelled, or open features and heterostructured electrocatalysts based on hollow hosts. Finally, some future research directions of hollow electrocatalysts for water splitting are discussed based on personal perspectives.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel approach to maximize the current density of electrodes modified by carbon nanotubes for high efficiency hydrogen production. Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs), due to their unique electrical conductivity and mechanical properties, have led to our interest in their application of MWNTs for water splitting purposes. The motivation for this work is to provide a platform which outperforms the traditional industrial material-graphite while still being compatible with the integration of other emerging technologies. These also require robustness in structure and performance in different electrolytes, and stability and reproducibility in the long term. In addition, it should be economically viable. The proposed graphite-MWNTs electrodes have been fabricated and tested in various conditions. Finally, performance and sustainability have been demonstrated.

Abstract:Hydrogen hydrometallurgy is one of the desirable alternatives to deal with higher power consumption and higher CO 2 emissions caused by traditional energy strategy in industrial fields, where the highly robust hydrogen depolarization anode for hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) is essential to replace the traditional oxygen evolution reaction process. In this work, we prepare the new-concept gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs) derived from titanium-based materials by using the thermal reconstruction of platinum, tin and titanium precursors on the titanium felt substrates (denoted as Pt-SnTi). After 500 ○ C heat treatment, the formed Pt-SnTiO x coatings are compact and stable on the Ti substrates due to the strong TiO x −Ti bonding, while the enhanced electron transfer from SnO x to metallic Pt lead high-exposure active sites, and hence, the Pt-SnTiO x coating presents an enhanced HOR activity and prolonged service lives compared with the Pt-TiO x and Pt-SnO x coatings. To evaluate feasibility of the resulting Ti-based GDE in hydrogen hydrometallurgy techniques, we applied the Pt-SnTi GDE in the copper electrowinning and zinc electrowinning. After 72 + 72 hours operation, the low cell voltage (Cu: below 0.63 V; Zn: below 1.41 V), low power consumption (Cu: below 520 kWh t −1 ; Zn: below 1220 kWh t −1 ) and high Faraday efficiency (Cu: above 98%; Zn: above 90%) confirm the good technical prospect of its applications of hydrogen hydrometallurgy. Moreover, the higher achievement is also approached in the industrial electrolyte and long-term operating condition for 230 hours (including 28-times stripping Zn), and the high robustness endows these Ti-based GDE further promising applications in the field of hydrogen industries.

Utilizing Reconstruction Achieves Ultrastable Water Electrolysis

Abstract:The dissolution of active atoms under operating potential will lead to a decline in their oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance, thus preventing the current highly active catalysts from being practically applicable in industrial water electrolysis. Here, we propose a sequential leaching strategy to utilize the dynamic restructuring and enhance the chemical bond strength for highly active and stable OER. Modeling on nickel-iron sulfides (NiFe-S), we introduced and utilized foreign Mo dopant preleaching as the sacrificial agent to alleviate the oxidation corrosion of partial M─S bonds. Operando spectroscopic reveal that foreign Mo dopant leach from the matrix and then adsorb on the surface of NiFe O(S)OH as molybdate at lower OER potential. The crystal occupation hamiltonian population analysis uncovers that the charge transfer from molybdate into NiFe O(S)OH will enhance bond energy of M─S, thus preventing further S and Fe/Ni leaching. By manipulating ion leaching, the resulting active phase achieves an ultralow overpotential of 250 mV at 400 mA cm-2 and high stability of more than 3,700 h at 100 mA cm-2. An industrial water electrolysis equipment using our catalysts delivered ultralow energy consumption of 4.30 kWh m-3H2 and record stability over 250 h (2,300 h lifetime by epitaxial method with 10% attenuation) under a high working current of 8,000 mA. The hydrogen production cost of US$2.46/kgH2 aligns with the green hydrogen cost target set by the European Commission for the coming decade.

Abstract:Hydrogen energy is an important carrier for global energy transformation and development due to its advantages of rich sources, green and carbon‐free, and wide application. The generation of clean hydrogen can be achieved through electrochemical water splitting driven by renewable energy, which has gained wide attention, but its large‐scale industrial application still faces challenges. This review summarizes the research status and bottleneck of industrial hydrogen production via electrolysis in developing electrocatalysts and optimizing electrolytic systems. It highlights that the deviation of electrocatalysts developed in the laboratory and their industrial application in the working environment and evaluation indicators should be corrected. With the aim to achieve low‐cost and sustainability in the production of high‐performance electrocatalysts, it is necessary to combine the material recycling from solid waste with the recyclable design of electrocatalysts. In addition, the future design of hybrid water electrolysis with low energy consumption and the ecological cycle issues that should be addressed in the industrial water electrolysis system are discussed.

Abstract:Traditional water–gas shift reaction provides one primary route for industrial production of clean-energy hydrogen. However, this process operates at high temperatures and pressures, and requires additional separation of H 2 from products containing CO 2 , CH 4 and residual CO. Herein, we report a room-temperature electrochemical water–gas shift process for direct production of high purity hydrogen (over 99.99%) with a faradaic efficiency of approximately 100%. Through rational design of anode structure to facilitate CO diffusion and PtCu catalyst to optimize CO adsorption, the anodic onset potential is lowered to almost 0 volts versus the reversible hydrogen electrode at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. The optimized PtCu catalyst achieves a current density of 70.0 mA cm −2 at 0.6 volts which is over 12 times that of commercial Pt/C (40 wt.%) catalyst, and remains stable for even more than 475 h. This study opens a new and promising route of producing high purity hydrogen.
