Abstract:All-solid state lithium metal batteries (ASSLMBs) with high energy density using lithium metal anodes (LMAs) and high safety all-solid-state electrolytes (ASSEs) are considered as a good choice for the next generation electrochemical energy storage devices. However, there are many challenges for their practical applications, especially the issues of the ASSE-LMA interface. In this review, the problems arising from the combination of LMAs and ASSEs and their modification strategies are summarized. We first introduce the current characterization techniques for the interface. Then the existing problems at the interface and analysis of the causes of these problems are presented. In addition, strategies to regulate the interface based on these problems are summarized. Finally, some further research directions for the interfaces of ASSLMBs are pointed out. In this review, the problems of the interface between lithium metal anodes and all-solid-state electrolytes are explored and the modification strategies to solve these problems are summarized.

Abstract:Li-metal anodes are one of the most promising energy storage systems that can considerably exceed the current technology to meet the ever-increasing demand of power applications. The apparent cycling performances and dendrite challenges of Li-metal anodes are highly influenced by the interface layer on the Li-metal anode because the intrinsic high reactivity of metallic Li results in an inevitable solid-state interface layer between the Li-metal and electrolytes. In this review, we summarize the recent progress on the interfacial chemistry regarding the interactions between electrolytes and ion migration through dynamic interfaces. The critical factors that affect the interface formation for constructing a stable interface with a low resistance are reviewed. Moreover, we review emerging strategies for rationally designing multiple-structured solid-state electrolytes and their interfaces, including the interfacial properties within hybrid electrolytes and the solid electrolyte/electrode interface. Finally, we present scientific issues and perspectives associated with Li-metal anode interfaces toward a practical Li-metal battery.

Abstract:The lithium-ion battery has the advantages of high energy density, long cycle life, small occupied volume, and high discharge voltage, which significantly promotes the development of portable electronic devices and electric vehicles. However, the accompanying safety issues have also aroused great concern. Solid-state lithium-ion batteries using solid-state electrolytes are considered the next-generation advanced energy devices which are expected to fundamentally solve the safety problems of conventional lithium-ion batteries. At present, lithium metal is mainly used as the anode material in the research of solid-state lithium-ion batteries. However, during the battery cycle, lithium dendrites produced on the surface of lithium metal will also penetrate the solid electrolyte, threatening the battery's safety. Therefore, it is necessary to develop non-lithium metal anodes for solid-state batteries. This review focuses on the research progress of lithium-free anode materials in solid-state batteries, including C, Si, Sn, Bi, Sb, metal hydrides, and lithium titanate (Li4Ti5O12). The effects of the size and structure of active materials, the use of a binder, the selection of solid electrolytes, and the manufacturing process on the electrochemical performance of the electrode are discussed in detail. The lithium storage mechanism, existing problems, improvement strategies, and application prospects of anode materials are summarized. By discussing the use of these active materials and their existing problems, this review provides a comprehensive insight into the application of non-lithium metal anode materials.

Abstract:The developing of all-solid-state lithium-metal batteries promises to improve safety and energy density. The challenges in the anode electrolyte interface are crucial and divided into static and dynamic issues in this review. The static issues are mainly shown as the huge resistances appearing in the assembled batteries, while the dynamic issues are reflected in the rapid deterioration of cycling performance. The static issues are mainly due to the poor chemical stability and interfacial contact, while dendrite growth and void formation are contained in the dynamic issues. Solving dynamic issues on the basis of static issues can conduce to the construction of stable all-solid-state lithium-metal batteries.

Abstract:Owing to their high energy density, wide operating temperature range, and excellent safety, all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) have emerged as ones of the most promising next-generation energy storage devices. With the development of highly conductive solid-state electrolytes, ASSBs are no longer mainly limited by the Li-ion diffusion within the electrolyte, and instead, the current bottlenecks are their low coulombic efficiency (CE) and short cycling life, which are caused by the high resistance at the electrode/electrolyte interfaces. The high chemical/electrochemical reactivity of the Li metal or the Si anodes and the large volume change during the charge-discharge cycle can exacerbate the physical and chemical instability of the interface. Here, we present the distinctive features of the typical high-capacity anode/electrolyte interfaces in ASSBs and summarize the recent works on identifying, probing, understanding, and engineering them. The complex but important characteristics of high-capacity anode/electrolyte interfaces are highlighted, namely the composition, mechanical, electronic, and ionic properties of the electrode particle-electrolyte particle and plate electrode-electrolyte particle interfaces. Additionally, the advanced characterization strategies for effective interfacial analysis are discussed. Finally, combining the electrode interface characteristics of different structures, the strategies for upgrading two different types of high-capacity anode/electrolyte interfaces are summarized, and some perspectives are provided for better understanding and design of the high-performance ASSBs.

Abstract:All-solid-state lithium battery (ASSLB) with inorganic solid state electrolytes is one of promising candidates for electric vehicles and large-scale smart grids for storage of alternative energy resources due to their benefits in safety, energy density, operable temperature range, and longer cycle life. As the key component in ASSLB, inorganic lithium-ion-based solid-state electrolytes (SSEs), especially the garnet-type solid electrolytes that own ionic conductivities in the order of 10(-3) S.cm(-1) at room temperature and are relative safe vs. Li metal, have obvious advantages in ASSLB. However, interfacial instability and their poor solid-solid contact between garnet and cathode result in high interfacial resistance, low efficiency, and poor cycle performance. Based on these understandings and analyses of interface characteristics and issues, this work presents a brief review on modification of interface, covering composite cathode, composite electrolyte, interface engineering, and interface layer. Some approaches of improving interface wettability and future research directions of ASSLB are given as well, which endeavor to realize the practical applications of ASSLB.

Abstract:All solid‐state lithium metal batteries (ASSLMBs) provide a promising solution for next‐generation rechargeable energy storage due to their high energy density and the high safety of solid‐state electrolytes (SSEs). However, most SSEs lack thermodynamic intrinsic stability against Li metal and chemical reactions happen spontaneously at the interface when solid‐state electrolytes are in contact with Li metal. An imperfect anode–electrolyte interface is a major hidden danger which restricts electrochemical performances and practical applications of full cells. This review comprehensively analyzes main challenges for anode–electrolyte interfaces in ASSLMBs including poor chemical or electrochemical compatibility, poor ion transport at the interface, and mechanical instability. Exiting strategies focusing on interface engineering are summarized and merits and nonmerits of each method are discussed objectively. The principles and outlooks of interface design are proposed. Meanwhile, advanced characterization and mass production technology are also brought forward to drive the in‐depth study and development of ASSLMBs. In this review, the main challenges for the anode–electrolyte interface in all solid‐state lithium metal batteries (ASSLMBs) are analyzed in detail and the corresponding strategies are summarized. Extra attention is paid to the advantages and disadvantages of each method and design principles of anode–electrolyte interface for ASSLMB are proposed from a relatively comprehensive perspective.

Abstract:The security of lithium-ion batteries is a serious problem due to the use of liquid electrolytes. In order to improve this issue, solid-state batteries are considered the next-generation energy storage devices due to their safety characteristics and potential high energy density compared to conventional ones. However, there are still some challenges hindering their practical application, mainly because of the interface problem between solid electrolytes and cathode materials, which has a significant impact on the electrochemical performance of solid-state batteries. In this review, some interface issues existing between various types of cathode materials and different solid electrolytes are comprehensively introduced and summarized, and the effective research methods proposed for interface modification and the results achieved are recommended and analyzed, especially the positive role of surface coatings in ameliorating interfacial problems. Finally, some insights into the interface problem and an outlook for the future development trends of solid-state batteries are put forward.

Abstract:<p>With the development of lithium battery technologies, and the increasing demand for energy density and safety, all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs) have received more and more attention due to their potential to outperform conventional systems. Numerous investigations have been devoted from theoretical computations to experimental synthesis in recent years. A wealth of strategies to improve the performance of ASSLBs has been reported. Up to now, researchers are mainly focusing on the strategies to improve their compatibility in full-cell fabrication and conductivity at room temperature (RT). We are organizing a systematization of the emerging strategies for advanced electrolytes and their interfaces in this review on three aspects: i) chiefly summarize strategies toward constructing advanced solid-state electrolyte and improving the interfacial compatibility of batteries with the optimizations of every battery component, which are related to energy densities as well as rate densities; ii) review some integrated strategies for enhancing rate property; iii) illuminate concisely strategies toward coupling matched electrodes for long cycling. Based on the systematized strategies, some possible research directions, useful guidance and insights for the development of new strategies will be proposed by in-depth discussion and reasonable analysis.</p>

Towards the mechanism and high performance of solid-state Li batteries

Abstract:Recently some critical problems and challenges have been exposed, hindering the development and practical application of SSLBs, such as the low room temperature ionic conductivity of solid electrolyte, the risk of short circuit caused by lithium dendrite piercing the electrolyte, etc. In order to address these challenges, it's essential to obtain in-depth insights into mechanisms and systematic optimization of SSLBs, including interfaces, electrolytes, and battery structures. Here, this minireview provides a brief summary, including strategies for electrode and electrolyte preparation, advanced battery characterization techniques, and the latest computational and simulation methods to advance understanding of kinetic or atomic scale mechanisms. The above contents will play an active role in promoting the development and practical application of safer and higher performance SSLBs.

Abstract:The interest for solid‐state lithium metal (Li°) batteries (SSLMBs) has been growing exponentially in recent years in view of their higher energy density and eliminated safety concerns. Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) are soft ionic conductors which can be easily processed into thin films at industrial level; these unique features confer solid‐state Li° polymer batteries (SSLMPBs, i.e., SSLMBs utilizing SPEs as electrolytes) distinct advantages compared to SSLMBs containing other electrolytes. In this article, we briefly review recent progresses and achievements in SSLMPBs including the improvement of ionic conductivity of SPEs and their interfacial stability with Li° anode. Moreover, we outline several advanced in‐situ and ex‐situ characterizing techniques which could assist in‐depth understanding of the anode‐electrolyte interphases in SSLMPBs. This article is hoped not only to update the state‐of‐the‐art in the research on SSLMPBs but also to bring intriguing insights that could improve the fundamental properties (e.g., transport, dendrite formation, and growth, etc.) and electrochemical performance of SSLMPBs.

Abstract:Silicon, with its remarkable specific capacity of 4200 mAh g −1 and abundant natural resources, presents a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, it faces challenges such as large volume expansion, low electrical conductivity, and unstable solid electrolyte interface (SEI) during the lithiation/delithiation process. This paper offers a comprehensive review of strategies to regulate and modify the silicon anode interface through structural design and compositional optimization. Nanosizing silicon particles and employing 1D, 2D, and 3D structural design approaches are discussed as methods to control the interface layer. Optimization of the interface composition is achieved through monomers, inorganic compounds, or organic compounds, while the modification of the interface emcompasses techiniquers like doping, surface coating, surface functionalization, and artificial SEI (ASEI) film construction. These versatile modification strategies are not only controllable but also highly efficient. A systematic summary and in-depth understanding of these silicon anode interface regulation and modification strategies will pave the way for optimizing silicon anode material design and the broader adoption of high-specific-capacity LIBs.

Abstract:All-solid-state Li metal batteries (ASSLMBs) have garnered attention owing to the high-energy density and low redox potential of Li metal anodes. However, the practical applications of ASSLMBs are hindered by issues such as the volume effect of Li anodes and Li dendrite growth. In this study, a combined method of stacking pressure analysis, interface morphology observation, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was used to investigate the electrochemical failure of Li symmetric batteries based on the Li 6 PS 5 Cl electrolyte at areal capacities of 0.5, 1, and 3 mAh cm −2 . The results indicated that ASSLMBs with areal capacities >1 mAh cm −2 exhibited a continuous decrease in the stacking pressure. As Li dendrites/dead Li and pores/cracks increased, stacking pressure variations of >0.1 MPa per cycle and a stacking pressure change rate > 0.2 MPa h −1 were observed, indicating impending battery failure owing to interface detachment. These findings provide new insights into the interface evolution of Li anodes of ASSLMBs and emphasize the importance of electrochemical–mechanical measurements in studying Li anode interfaces of ASSLMBs.

Abstract:Given the undesired anodic stability, the practical application of solid‐state lithium metal batteries is largely hindered by a limited lifespan. This review summarizes the current understanding of interfacial chemistry, mechanical evolution, and dendrite formation at the Li|SSE interface and discusses recent approaches in interfacial engineering based on SEI, artificial interlayer, and composite anode/SSEs. The replacement of non‐aqueous organic electrolytes with solid‐state electrolytes (SSEs) in solid‐state lithium metal batteries (SLMBs) is considered a promising strategy to address the constraints of lithium‐ion batteries, especially in terms of energy density and reliability. Nevertheless, few SLMBs can deliver the required cycling performance and long‐term stability for practical use, primarily due to suboptimal interface properties. Given the diverse solidification pathways leading to different interface characteristics, it is crucial to pinpoint the source of interface deterioration and develop appropriate remedies. This review focuses on Li|SSE interface issues between lithium metal anode and SSE, discussing recent advancements in the understanding of (electro)chemistry, the impact of defects, and interface evolutions that vary among different SSE species. The state‐of‐the‐art strategies concerning modified SEI, artificial interlayer, surface architecture, and composite structure are summarized and delved into the internal relationships between interface characteristics and performance enhancements. The current challenges and opportunities in characterizing and modifying the Li|SSE interface are suggested as potential directions for achieving practical SLMBs.

Abstract:Solid-state lithium metal batteries offer superior energy density, longer lifespan, and enhanced safety compared to traditional liquid-electrolyte batteries. Their development has the potential to revolutionize battery technology, including the creation of electric vehicles with extended ranges and smaller more efficient portable devices. The employment of metallic lithium as the negative electrode allows the use of Li-free positive electrode materials, expanding the range of cathode choices and increasing the diversity of solid-state battery design options. In this review, we present recent developments in the configuration of solid-state lithium batteries with conversion-type cathodes, which cannot be paired with conventional graphite or advanced silicon anodes due to the lack of active lithium. Recent advancements in electrode and cell configuration have resulted in significant improvements in solid-state batteries with chalcogen, chalcogenide, and halide cathodes, including improved energy density, better rate capability, longer cycle life, and other notable benefits. To fully leverage the benefits of lithium metal anodes in solid-state batteries, high-capacity conversion-type cathodes are necessary. While challenges remain in optimizing the interface between solid-state electrolytes and conversion-type cathodes, this area of research presents significant opportunities for the development of improved battery systems and will require continued efforts to overcome these challenges.

Abstract:Because of the high capacity of lithium (Li) metal and the intrinsic safety of solid-state electrolyte, solid-state Li-metal batteries are regarded as a promising candidate for next-generation energy storage. However, uncontrollable dendrite growth and large interfacial resistance severely hamper the practical applications. This review summarizes the issues generated by the marriage of Li-metal anodes and solid-state electrolytes. First, the current challenges are underscored. Specific attention is paid to the large interfacial resistance, uncontrolled dendrite growth, and low operation current or capacity. The second section is dedicated primarily to understanding the ionic channels in the composite electrolyte and the space charge layers in the interfacial region. Based on these dilemmas and working principles, emerging strategies to render solid-state Li-metal batteries are summarized. Finally, the general conclusion and perspective on the current limitations and recommended research of solid-state Li-metal batteries are presented.

Abstract:All-solid-state lithium-ion batteries (SSLIBs) are promising candidates to meet the requirement of electric vehicles due to the intrinsic safety characteristics and high theoretical energy density. A stable cathodic interface is critical for maximizing the performance of SSLIBs. In this study, operando X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) combined with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) is employed to investigate the interfacial behavior between the Ni-rich layered cathodes and sulfide solid-state electrolyte. The study demonstrates a metastable intermediate state of sulfide electrolyte at high voltage and parasitic reactions with cathodes during the charge/discharge process, which leads to the surface structural reconstruction of Ni-rich cathodes. Constructing a uniform interlayer by atomic layer deposition (ALD) is also employed in this study to further investigate the cathodic interface stability. These results provide new insight into the cathodic interface reaction mechanism and highlight the importance of advanced operando characterizations for SSLIBs.

Abstract:<p>Extensive efforts have been made to improve the Li‐ionic conductivity of solid electrolytes (SE) for developing promising all‐solid‐state Li‐based batteries (ASSB). Recent studies suggest that minimizing the existing interface problems is even more important than maximizing the conductivity of SE. Interfaces are essential in ASSB, and their properties significantly influence the battery performance. Interface problems, arising from both physical and (electro)chemical material properties, can significantly inhibit the transport of electrons and Li‐ions in ASSB. Consequently, interface problems may result in interlayer formation, high impedances, immobilization of moveable Li‐ions, loss of active host sites available to accommodate Li‐ions, and Li‐dendrite formation, all causing significant storage capacity losses and ultimately battery failures. The characteristic differences of interfaces between liquid‐ and solid‐type Li‐based batteries are presented here. Interface types, interlayer origin, physical and chemical structures, properties, time evolution, complex interrelations between various factors, and promising interfacial tailoring approaches are reviewed. Furthermore, recent advances in the interface‐sensitive or depth‐resolved analytical tools that can provide mechanistic insights into the interlayer formation and strategies to tailor the interlayer formation, composition, and properties are discussed.</p>
