Abstract:Major challenges existing in the photocatalytic gas-liquid mixing system model include the mass transfer limit at the gas-liquid interface and the depth of light penetration. For this purpose, amphiphilic molecular catalysts were prepared by monovacancy phosphomolybdate modified by propyltrimethoxysilane. It is also used as a photocatalyst in the model reaction (molecular oxygen oxidation of aromatic alcohol). The amphiphilic molecular catalyst in the reaction is similar to surfactant behavior, not only can adsorb in the gas-liquid interface, ensure the direct contact between oxygen, catalyst and reactants, improve the efficiency of mass transfer, and also reduce the surface tension of aromatic alcohol, gas-liquid-solid three-phase system into foam system. The formed foam system amplifies the interface area of the reaction, enhances the light penetration depth and significantly promotes the reaction rate. The insights gained from our study provide a new perspective on the design of photocatalysis in a gas-liquid hybrid system.

Abstract:Multiphase catalysis is used in many industrial processes; however, the reaction rate can be restricted by the low accessibility of gaseous reactants to the catalysts in water, especially for oxygen-dependent biocatalytic reactions. Despite the fact that solubility and diffusion rates of oxygen in many liquids (such as perfluorocarbon) are much higher than in water, multiphase reactions with a second liquid phase are still difficult to conduct, because the interaction efficiency between immiscible phases is extremely low. Herein, we report an efficient triphase biocatalytic system using oil core–silica shell oxygen nanocarriers. Such design offers the biocatalytic system an extremely large water-solid-oil triphase interfacial area and a short path required for oxygen diffusion. Moreover, the silica shell stabilizes the oil nanodroplets in water and prevents their aggregation. Using oxygen-dependent oxidase enzymatic reaction as an example, we demonstrate this efficient biocatalytic system for the oxidation of glucose, choline, lactate, and sucrose by substituting their corresponding oxidase counterparts. A rate enhancement by a factor of 10–30 is observed when the oxygen nanocarriers are introduced into reaction system. This strategy offers the opportunity to enhance the efficiency of other gaseous reactants involved in multiphase catalytic reactions.

Abstract:Evaporation, boiling, and condensation are fundamental liquid-vapor phase-change heat transfer processes and have been utilized in many conventional and emerging energy systems. Recent advances in the manipulation of interface wetting and heterogeneous nucleation using micro/nano-structured surfaces have enabled exciting two-phase flow dynamics and heat transfer enhancement. However, independently manipulating droplets, bubbles, or liquid films through surface modification has encountered bottlenecks. In this Perspective, we discuss an emerging strategy where droplets/bubbles are coupled with a liquid film to control fluid dynamics for minimizing the thermal resistance between the liquid-vapor interface and solid substrate, thus significantly enhancing the heat transfer performance beyond the state of the art.
Microstructured gas-liquid-(solid) interfaces: A platform for sustainable synthesis of commodity chemicals

Abstract:Gas-liquid-solid catalytic reactions are widespread in nature and man-made technologies. Recently, the exceptional reactivity observed on (electro)sprayed microdroplets, in comparison to bulk gas-liquid systems, has attracted the attention of researchers. In this perspective, we compile possible strategies to engineer catalytically active gas-liquid-(solid) interfaces based on membrane contactors, microdroplets, micromarbles, microbubbles, and microfoams to produce commodity chemicals such as hydrogen peroxide, ammonia, and formic acid. In particular, particle-stabilized microfoams, with superior upscaling capacity, emerge as a promising and versatile platform to conceive high-performing (catalytic) gas-liquid-(solid) nanoreactors. Gas-liquid-(solid) nanoreactors could circumvent current limitations of state-of-the-art multiphase reactors (e.g., stirred tanks, trickle beds, and bubble columns) suffering from poor gas solubility and mass transfer resistances and access gas-liquid-(solid) reactors with lower cost and carbon footprint.

Abstract:Rational interfacial microenvironment design and modulation are crucial to photocatalysis performance. Herein, we report a photocatalytic system with a liquid (water)–liquid (organic liquid)–solid (L–L–S) triphase reaction interface microenvironment and demonstrate its utility in semiconductor-mediated photodegradation. The triphase system was fabricated using TiO2 nanowire arrays as the solid phase and polydimethylsiloxane as the inert organic liquid phase. The presence of the polydimethylsiloxane layer was confirmed via cryotransmission electron microscopy analysis, and the presence of the L–L–S interface was demonstrated using three-dimensional (3D) laser scanning confocal microscopy. Based on this triphase system, the concentrations of reactant O2 and organic molecules could be both significantly improved at the interface microenvironment, leading to over 30 times higher reaction kinetics than that of a conventional liquid–solid (L–S) diphase system. Moreover, the L–L–S system exhibited excellent stability, and the design showed universal applicability. These findings highlight the importance of interface architecture design and reveal an effective path for the development of efficient catalysis systems.

Abstract:Different from conventional gas–solid reactions operated at high temperature, both gaseous and liquid molecules/ions exist in a variety of low temperature catalytic reactions, resulting in a gradually increased attention on three phase catalysis. Recently, extensive attention has been focused on three phase engineering for the construction of gas–liquid–solid three phase catalytic interfaces to promote the interfacial mass transfer processes, therefore providing significantly improved catalytic performance favorable for potential large scale applications. This Spotlight highlights our latest progress in three phase photocatalysis and electrocatalysis and discusses the substantial role of three phase interface engineering in improving the overall catalytic performance mainly from three aspects: (1) wettability modification, (2) interface characterization, and (3) tandem and parallel triphase interfaces. The aim is to provide an overview of the classification and current research status of three phase catalysis, and to examine its potential application scenarios for the design of highly efficient triphase interface-based membrane reactors.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:A spherical liquid-liquid interface can be obtained by dispersing one liquid phase into another to form droplets, which will facilitate the two-phase reactions between the immiscible participating fluids. The phase transfer catalysts assembled at the droplet "wall'' catalyze the reactions between the aqueous and organic phases. The study illustrates an interfacial synthetic approach which is ideal for the biphasic reaction by taking advantage of the droplet-based microdevice. The improved reaction efficiency can be attributed to the high surface-to-volume ratio and internal flow circulation in the droplets.

Abstract:Solid–liquid–gas reactions are ubiquitous and are encountered in both nature and industrial processes 1,2,3,4 . A comprehensive description of gas transport in liquid and following reactions at the solid–liquid–gas interface, which is substantial in regard to achieving enhanced triple-phase reactions, remains unavailable. Here, we report a real-time observation of the accelerated etching of gold nanorods with oxygen nanobubbles in aqueous hydrobromic acid using liquid-cell transmission electron microscopy. Our observations reveal that when an oxygen nanobubble is close to a nanorod below the critical distance (~1 nm), the local etching rate is significantly enhanced by over one order of magnitude. Molecular dynamics simulation results show that the strong attractive van der Waals interaction between the gold nanorod and oxygen molecules facilitates the transport of oxygen through the thin liquid layer to the gold surface and thus plays a crucial role in increasing the etching rate. This result sheds light on the rational design of solid–liquid–gas reactions for enhanced activities.

Abstract:Taking advantage of gas/liquid/solid three-phase interfaces (TPIs), electrodes with superior performance have been prepared due to the effective transport of gaseous reactants and suitable mediation of local interface environments in electrochemical reactions that involve gases. Strategies that involve suitable pore structures, surface structures, and chemical composition, as well as novel electrode and reaction-system configurations, are commonly used to construct these electrodes. Here, representative electrochemical reactions that occur at TPIs are summarized systematically from the perspective of advanced electrochemistry-related applications. First, typical electrocatalytic reactions are discussed according to the mediation strategy, after which common fuel cells are introduced. Typical enzymatic reactions for the electrochemical detection are then discussed. Later, fabrication of materials with specific structures and synthesis of chiral pharmaceuticals are introduced and substrates for anti-corrosion are briefly discussed, followed by introduction of general methods for constructing TPI-based electrodes. Finally, future opportunities and challenges associated with regulating these interfaces are presented.

Abstract:The fundamental water cycle, carbon cycle and nitrogen cycle relying on heterogeneous gas-involving electrocatalytic processes have attracted extensive attention due to their critical contributions to clean, sustainable and energy–environmental electrochemical devices. The development of electrocatalytic materials has afforded gradually improved electrocatalytic reaction efficiency and increasingly promising implementation of electrochemical techniques. In gas-involving electrocatalytic reactions, apart from the intrinsic reaction kinetics, the microenvironment at the triple-phase interfaces of the solid catalyst, liquid electrolyte and gaseous reactant or product under reaction conditions can exert a significant effect on the eventual electrochemical performance since the key issues, including mass transport, electron conduction and accessibility of active sites, are highly sensitive to the electrocatalytic processes. Herein, we systematically summarize the up-to-date progress in energy-related electrocatalysts based on gas–liquid–solid triple-phase interface engineering in terms of an active-site-enriched surface, decent gas wettability and electrolyte infiltration and favorable electronic conductivity. To establish universal theory–structure–function relationships based on triple-phase interface engineering, the corresponding insightful understanding, architecture design/constituent regulation of electrocatalytic materials and admirable electrocatalytic activity are discussed, simultaneously revealing the practical energy-related applications in water electrolyzers, metal-based batteries and fuel cells. Finally, the remaining challenges, possible opportunities and future perspectives are highlighted.Graphical AbstractThe gas–liquid–solid triple-phase interface is of crucial importance for the electrocatalytic nitrogen, carbon and oxygen cycles based on electrochemical energy-related devices as it affords the direct influence on accessibility of active sites and the mass/electron transfer. Abstract:AbstractSurface/interfacial catalysis on a series of oxide substrates and metal/oxide interfaces has been reviewed. Special attention has been paid to those systems in which the oxide substrates are structurally defined with certain exposed facets, and the metal assembling is well controlled with desired particle size and narrow particle size distribution. The distinct catalytic behaviors over the selected systems have been discussed in line with their specific surface/interfacial structure features as well as other surface properties. The tactics and cations how to build up the novel metal/oxide interfacial structures are provided, and the guideline for extended reaction exploration is also suggested. Success in structure and performance control on these important systems is highly valuable for designing more selective and efficient catalyst in practical applications.

Abstract:With the progress in science and technology, non-oxide ceramics (NOCs) are playing a vital role in various fields at high temperature. However, under harsh service conditions, NOCs tend to be confronted with complicated interface reactions with different media, leading to an acceleration in material failure. Among which, the gas-solid reaction is the most common one accompanied by the highest reaction rate, and the corresponding principles and methods are always applicable to solid-solid and liquid-solid reactions. Therefore, deep understanding of the gas-solid interface reaction behavior is significantly important. Herein, contemporary aspects of gas-solid interface reaction of NOCs are reviewed to show how efficient different approaches are to understand the reaction behavior and mechanism. This review covers theoretical approaches based on kinetic models, experimental approaches using advanced instruments as testing and characterization techniques, and simulative approaches with the help of first-principle calculation and molecular dynamics. Different kinetic models applied to different reaction types are introduced and compared, which have a unique advantage in describing and predicting the gas-solid interface reaction behavior of NOCs. Various techniques are illustrated to show the intuitive observation of changes in microstructure and phase composition at the reaction interface. Based on the above two aspects, the effects of external environment on the gas-solid interface reaction are explained and the significance of interface evolution of NOCs themselves is recognized. To reveal the internal reaction essence, the typical application of recently rising simulative approaches is illustrated to show their potentials in observing the reaction path at the atomic and molecular scale and revealing the reaction mechanism. Finally, some research areas worthy being carried out are pointed out. This review will give a deep understanding of the gas-solid interface reaction and provide scientific designing basis for the performance improvement of NOCs.

Interfacial Effects of Catalysis in Pickering Emulsions

Abstract:Liquid-liquid or gas-liquid interfaces are ubiquitous in nature and in industrial production. Understanding the unique effects arising from the asymmetric interfaces and controlling the catalytic reactions are frontiers of physical chemistry. However, our understanding of the reactivity and selectivity at the interfaces remains scant. Pickering emulsions are emerging as a stable biphasic reaction system, which provides a new opportunity for clarifying the inherent features responsible for prominent interfacial reactivity or selectivity. This Perspective tentatively discusses the unique effects of interfacial adsorption, hydrogen bonding of water molecules, and strong electric field at the interfaces. Additionally, it highlights key insights into the fundamental mechanisms of reaction kinetic and thermodynamic alterations, molecular orientations, and the spontaneous generation of reactive species at the interfaces through representative examples. Finally, we delineate the current challenges and propose future research directions. The perspectives advanced herein may serve as valuable guidance for the design of efficient interfacial catalytic systems.

Abstract:There is a strong desire to design and synthesize catalysts that assemble at the oil-water interface to improve the efficiency of biphasic reactions. Anisotropic dumbbell-shaped bi-component mesoporous carbon-organosilica Janus particles with asymmetric wettability are synthesized through a one-step compartmentalized growth of a mesoporous organosilica sphere attached to a mesoporous resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) sphere. A library was prepared of tunable Janus particles possessing diverse hollow structures with various functionalities. As a proof of concept, the Janus particle-derived catalyst can assemble at the oil-water interface to stabilize Pickering emulsions. Owing to the increased reaction interface area, the Janus catalyst exhibits a more than three-fold increase in catalytic efficiency compared to the Pt loaded carbon sphere catalyst in aqueous hydrogenation reactions.

Abstract:As an alternative to conventional energy conversion and storage reactions, gas-involved electrochemical reactions, including the carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO 2 RR), nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), have become an emerging research direction and have gained increasing attention due to their advantages of environmental friendliness and sustainability. Various studies have been designed to accelerate sluggish kinetics but with limited results. Most of them promote the reaction by modulating the intrinsic properties of the catalyst, ignoring the synergistic effect of the reaction as a whole. Due to the introduction of gas, traditional liquid-solid two-phase reactions are no longer applicable to future research. Since gas-involved electrochemical reactions mostly occur at the junctions of gaseous reactants, liquid electrolytes and solid catalysts, the focus of future research on reaction kinetics should gradually shift to three-phase reaction interfaces. In this review, we briefly introduce the formation and constraints of the three-phase interface and propose three criteria to judge its merit, namely, the active site, mass diffusion and electron mass transfer. Subsequently, a series of modulation methods and relevant works are discussed in detail from the three improvement directions of 'exposing more active sites, promoting mass diffusion and accelerating electron transfer'. Definitively, we provide farsighted insights into the understanding and research of three-phase interfaces in the future and point out the possible development direction of future regulatory methods, hoping that this review can broaden the future applications of the three-phase interface, including but not limited to gas-involved electrochemical reactions.

Abstract:As a promising environmental treatment technology, photocatalysis has been investigated for decades and even tentatively practiced in actual large-scale applications. However, most researches focus on photocatalytic kinetics (excitation, charge transfer, and surface reaction) but ignore the significant impact of oxygen interfacial mass transfer for photocatalytic aerobic oxidation in aqueous media. Here, we use finite element simulation to demonstrate that during photocatalysis, the remained local oxygen concentration for photocatalysts at a gas-liquid-solid triphase interface is much higher than that dispersed in a bulk liquid phase. Photocatalyst consisting of Au/TiO2 nanoparticles supported at triphase interface shows a non-diffusion limited charge separation for oxygen photoactivation, therefore achieving a photodegradation efficiency of about 85% toward bisphenol A. Furthermore, we develop a flowing triphase photocatalytic system that exhibits a tunable one-way photodegradation efficiency from 10% to 60% and a photostability for up to 50 h of continuous irradiation, further demonstrating the potential for large-scale applications.

Abstract:The electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide(CO2)to value-added fuels and chemicals provides a promising way to realize sustainable carbon recycling[1].Developing ro-bust electrocatalysts with high activity and selectivity is critically important for efficient electrochemical CO2 re-duction reaction(CO2RR).Generally,it is challenging to achieve high efficiency and selectivity simultaneously in the CO2RR due to the multi-proton/electron transfer processes and complex reaction intermediates.Among many studied formulations,bimetallic catalysts have attracted significant attention with promising activity,selectivity,and stability[2].In particular,phase engineering of bimetallic nanocata-lysts is emerging as an effective strategy to regulate the catalyst properties by rationally tuning their atomic ar-rangements,thus providing an opportunity to explore the relationships between structures and catalytic properties[3,4].For instance,Zhang and co-workers[3]demonstrated the crystal phase-dependent C2H4 selectivity of Cu nano-materials in CO2RR.Huang and co-workers[4]created a series of phase-and structure-engineered copper-tin cata-lysts,and explored the CO2RR performances to correlate with their unique structures and phases.

Abstract:Surface and interface designs are an efficient strategy to fabricate innovative and advanced catalysts. A prerequisite for this is a fundamental understanding of the structure-performance relations of catalyst nanoparticles, which, however, remains a formidable challenge due to the complexity of heterogeneous catalysis. Recent progresses in catalytic nanocrystals with uniform and well-defined structures, in situ characterization techniques, and theoretical calculations have offered opportunities for the fundamental studies of heterogeneous catalysis, and the achieved outputs are turning the innovation of efficient catalysts via surface and interface designs into a reality. Herein, the recent advances in the fundamental-understanding-directed rational surface and interface designs for heterogeneous catalysis, including crystal phase design, morphology/facet design, and size design, are presented. Perspectives are also discussed for the innovation of efficient catalysts via the fundamental-understanding-directed surface and interface designs followed by controlled synthesis.

Abstract:Charged interfaces are key areas for charge transfer and chemical reactions. Studying these interfaces at the microscopic level, especially in constructing and characterizing specific structures, understanding charge transfer, and managing chemical reactions, is crucial but challenging. Our work focuses on three innovative interface structures: solid/solid triboelectric, liquid/gas electrified, and solid/ultrathin heterojunction interfaces. We have achieved significant insights into the charge transfer mechanisms within these electrified systems and effectively controlled catalytic reactions at these interfaces. Key findings include: Development of new concepts for contact electrification and electrostatic-induced coupling at solid/solid interfaces, leading to novel applications in energy conversion and catalysis. We introduced the concept of mechanical-electric-catalytic reactions based on triboelectric interfaces and achieved direct synthesis of hydrogen peroxide through friction-catalysis under normal conditions. Effective control of reaction kinetics and selectivity in charged microdroplet liquid/gas electrified interfaces by adjusting parameters like droplet evaporation rates and electric field characteristics. This approach led to efficient production of hydrogen peroxide and selective conversion of carbon dioxide. Precise atomic-level construction and sub-nanometer characterization of solid/ultrathin heterojunction interfaces, exemplified by gold/graphene interfaces. This included the development of a gold/ultrathin palladium/single-layer ruthenium structure, enabling in-depth study of hydroxylation reactions and the influence of palladium interlayers on ruthenium's catalytic efficiency.
