Abstract:Four oligoanthranilamides 1-4, which are incorporated with three, five, seven, or nine benzene units, respectively, have been synthesized and characterized. X-ray analysis, 1D and 2D H-1 NMR, and IR experiments reveal that all the new oligoamides adopt rigid, planar and zigzagged conformations in both solution and solid state, which are stabilized by intramolecular three-center hydrogen bonding. A 5-mer oligomer 22, which is incorporated with two acetylene groups at the ends, has also been synthesized and utilized for the self-assembly of a rigid hydrogen-bonded metallocyclophane. The new rigid oligoanthranilamides represent useful building blocks for the construction of supramolecular architectures.

Abstract:In this study, 2-(aminomethyl)phenol and its derivatives, the reactants for 2-substituted 1,3-benzoxazines, are synthesized by HCl hydrolysis from the typical benzoxazines. The phenol/aniline-based mono-oxazine benzoxazine, PH-a, and the bisphenol A/aniline-based bis-oxazine benzoxazine, BA-a, are used as examples to demonstrate the feasibility of this new approach. Their chemical structures are characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopies, and are further verified by elementary analysis. Their thermal properties are studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). These two 2-(aminomethyl) phenolic derivatives are reacted with paraformaldehyde to close the oxazine rings. A benzoxazine with a phenyl substituent at the 2-position of the oxazine ring is obtained from the 2-((phenylamino)methyl)phenol (hPH-a) and benzaldehyde. All these results highlight the success of the HCl hydrolysis and the formation of stable intermediates, namely 2-(aminomethyl) phenolic derivatives, from readily available benzoxazine monomers. This further demonstrates the feasibility of using these intermediates as reactants for a novel benzoxazine synthesis.

Abstract:Novel aromatic main-chain benzoxazine copolymer oligomers are synthesized by the Mannich reaction. Cured main-chain benzoxazine copolymers possess improved processing and high-frequency dielectric properties in comparison with corresponding main-chain benzoxazines, owing to the decreased molecular polarity and molecular weight. It should be noted that the polar/nonpolar heterogeneous solvent indeed plays a key role in the preparation of main-chain copolymer oligomers. The copolymers prepared in the optimized heterogeneous solvent condition has the least activation energy, the minimum high-frequency dielectric constants (2.81, 5GHz; 2.75, 10GHz), and a relatively high glass transition temperature (260°C). Therefore, this work not only provides a simple path for improving processing and high-frequency dielectric properties of main-chain benzocaine but also gives some insight into the effects of solvent on the formation of copolymers.

Abstract:A general synthesis of 4-hydroxylcarbazoles by domino vinylogous conjugate addition/cyclization/elimination/aromatization of easily prepared 3-nitroindoles with alkylidene azlactones under mild and transition-metal-free conditions has been developed. This method was also applicable to other nitrosubstituted benzofused heterocycles such as 3-nitrobenzothiophene, 2-nitrobenzothiophene, and 2-nitrobenzofuran. The valuable tetracyclic carbazole derivatives, such as 6H-oxazolo[4,5-c]carbazole and 3,6-dihydro-2H-oxazolo[4,5-c]carbazol-2-one, were readily prepared from the product, demonstrating synthetic utility of this method.

Abstract:High Performance Polymers, Ahead of Print. Two series of bifunctional benzoxazines were synthesized from o- and p-hydroxybenzyl alcohols (oHBA and pHBA), three aliphatic diamines containing ether linkage (Jeffamines D230 and D400 and 4,7,10-trioxa-1,13-tridecanediamine (TTDDA)), and paraformaldehyde. The chemical structures of the benzoxazines were confirmed by 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The ring-opening polymerization of the benzoxazines was studied by differential scanning calorimetry and FTIR, respectively. oHBA-based benzoxazines respectively exhibit lower onset temperatures of ring-opening polymerization than pHBA-based counterparts due to the O–H∙∙∙O intramolecular hydrogen-bonding interaction between the hydrogen of ortho-methylol group and the oxygen in oxazine ring, and oHBA-based polybenzoxazines respectively show lower glass transition temperatures (Tgs) than pHBA-based counterparts due to the difference in crosslinking density caused by the steric hindrance effect of the position of methylol group on the polymerization of benzoxazine monomers. In each of the two series of benzoxazines, the onset temperature of ring-opening polymerization of D230-based benzoxazine is close to that of TTDDA-based analogue and lower than that of D400-based counterpart owing to the steric effect of the chain length and chain volume of the bridging structure between the oxazine rings on the polymerization, and the Tg of D230-based polybenzoxazine is close to that of TTDDA-based analogue and much higher than that of D400-based counterpart owing to the difference in crosslinking density caused by the steric hindrance effect of the bridging structure on the polymerization of benzoxazine monomers. In addition, all the polybenzoxazines exhibit thermally induced shape memory effect. In each of the two series of polybenzoxazines, the shape recovery rate and ratio of D400-based polybenzoxazine are respectively close to those of D230-based counterpart and higher than those of TTDDA-based analogue due to the difference in network architecture.

Abstract:Ring-opening polymerization of benzoxazine monomers is a complex process and various chemical structures including N,O-acetal structures, phenolic Mannich structures and arylamine Mannich structures are formed in polybenzoxazines. To understand the polymerization mechanism, the effects of temperature, time and solvent polarity on the polymerization routes, chemical structures and thermal properties were studied. It was discovered that the N,O-acetal structures and the phenoxy structures can be obtained in a low-polarity solvent like dichloromethane at low temperature (-20 oC) with the aid of PCl5, while the arylamine Mannich structures can be readily generated in polar solvent like N,N-Dimethylformamide at high temperature (>80 oC) in the presence of PCl5. However, the phenolic Mannich structures can be directly formed at high temperature (>180 oC) without any catalysts. Upon prolonging the reaction time or elevating the temperature, the phenoxy structures easily rearranged into the N,O-acetal structures or the arylamine Mannich structures. Further increasing the temperature will cause the arylamine Mannich structures to rearrange into the phenolic Mannich structures and even the phenolic methylene structures. Therefore, both phenoxy structures and N,O-acetal structures showed poor thermal stability; while the arylamine Mannich structures possessed lower initial decomposition temperature but higher char yield compared with the phenolic Mannich structures because of the formation of thermally unstable iminium ions and the anchoring of dangling aniline moieties.

Abstract:Covalent polymerization of organic molecules into crystalline one-dimensional (1D) polymers is effective for achieving desired thermal, optical, and electrical properties, yet it remains a persistent synthetic challenge for their inherent tendency to adopt amorphous or semicrystalline phases. Here we report a strategy to synthesize crystaline 1D covalent organic frameworks (COFs) composing quasi-conjugated chains with benzoxazine linkages via the one-pot Mannich reaction. Through [4+2] and [2+2] type Mannich condensation reactions, we fabricated stoichiometric and sub-stoichiometric 1D covalent polymeric chains, respectively, using doubly and singly-linked benzoxazine ring. The validity of their crystal structures has been directly visualized through the state-of-the-art cryogenic low-dose electron microscopy techniques. Post-synthetic functionalizations of them with a chiral MacMillan catalyst produce crystaline organic photocatalysts that demonstrated excellent catalytic and recyclable performance in light-driven asymmetric alkylation of aldehydes, affording up to 94% enantiomeric excess

Abstract:The future development of benzoxazine thermosetting resins as advanced polymeric materials depends on designing more attractive chemical structures and reaching a deeper understanding of the structure–property relationship at the molecular level. Herein, we synthesized a new series of benzoxazines containing the thiophenecarboxamide or thiopheneacetamide functionality at the ortho- and para-positions with respect to oxygen in the oxazine ring. Successful syntheses of thiophene-rich benzoxazine monomers and their corresponding molecular characterizations were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and high-resolution mass spectroscopy. Ring-opening polymerization processes of benzoxazines and thermal properties of their resulting polybenzoxazines were studied by differential scanning calorimetry, in situ FT-IR spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. In addition, a combined experimental and computational study using both 1D and 2D NMR as well as density functional theory calculations provided kinetic insights into the effects of structural and hydrogen bonding on the polymerization mechanism. With the designed varieties of hydrogen bonds in these novel benzoxazines, it has been found that oxygen in the oxazine ring involved in stronger hydrogen bonding can generate a relatively weaker O–CH2 bond, leading to the reduced ring-opening polymerization temperature. The fundamental investigations presented in the current work provide us a deeper understanding of the hydrogen bonding interaction in benzoxazine as well as its role in polymerization behavior. Moreover, these newly obtained thiophene-rich benzoxazines also give us ample opportunities to develop high-performance polybenzoxazine thermosets with promising applications.

Abstract:The polymerization mechanism of allyl-functional benzoxazine (Bz) monomers is reported in this article. Following the traditional route of Bz synthesis, a series of monofunctional Bz monomers were synthesized via allylamine and amine condensation reaction with 2,2′-diallyl bisphenol-A and paraformaldehyde. Resulting chemical structures of the synthesized monomers were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance analyses. The polymerization behavior of the prepared allyl-functional monomers was studied using differential scanning calorimetry and FTIR. Three reactions were observed in the curing process: polymerization reaction of N-allyl groups in the oxazine ring, ring-opening polymerization of Bz, and polymerization reaction of allyl groups in benzene. Compared to a typical polybenzoxazine (PBz), higher cross-linking density in PBz-allyl-2 leads to a higher glass transition temperature and 5% weight loss temperature, which indicates improved thermal stability in PBz-allyl-2 as well as superior thermal conductivity compared to 2,2′-bis(3-phenyl-3,4-dihydro-2 H-1,3-benzoxazinyl)propane. Data on dielectric properties also show that PBz-allyl-2 outperforms typical PBzs. This work focuses on the manipulation of Bz monomer structures to alter their ring-opening polymerization mechanism, as well as cross-linking, in order to derive a PBz with improved properties.

Abstract:Aromatic heterocyclic polymers play key roles in high performance polymers. Among the various unsaturated functional groups, alkynyl and cyano groups stand out because they may form rigid and thermally stable six-membered rings such as benzene and triazine rings. In this work, monocyclic benzoxazine is used as a platform to integrate the alkynyl and/or cyano groups and the polymerization of these compounds are studied in detail. The curing behavior is investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), the chemical structures of the polymers are studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Moreover, the thermal and dielectric properties of the polymers are also probed. It is found that trimerization of alkynyl groups occur more easily than cyano groups. As the ratio of the two functional groups varies, pyridine rings can be formed more easily than pyrimidine rings. Moreover, more cyano groups may lead to reduction of glass transition temperature (Tg) because of the low reactivity of cyano groups, but formation of pyridine rings could greatly improve the thermal stability of the polymer and char yield could reach 69%, which is much higher than the other polybenzoxazines prepared in this work.

Abstract:A tandem coupling-ketooxygenation reaction of readily accessible enediyne-carboxylic compounds with inner alkynes has been developed that utilizes the PdCl2/CuBr2 catalytic system under an O2 atmosphere and assembles a class of isoindolinones and o-acylbenzoic acids. The two oxygen atoms are regioselectively incorporated into enediyne units at the 1- and 6-positions from atmospheric molecular oxygen and H2O, respectively, during the present process. This study uncovered a formal [4C + 2C] benzannulation-diketonization of enediynes and alkynes via a coupling and decoupling strategy.

Abstract:The KOH-promoted chemodivergent benzannulation of ortho-fluorobenzamides with 2-propyn-1-ol can afford either 1,4-benzoxazepin-5(4H)-ones or 1,3-benzoxazin-4(4H)-ones in good yields with high selectivity, depending greatly upon the use of solvents. In the case of using DMSO, the intermolecular benzannulation produced seven-membered benzo-fused heterocycles of 1,4-benzoxazepin-5(4H)-ones, whereas in MeCN, the six-membered benzo-fused heterocycles of 1,3-benzoxazin-4(4H)-ones were formed. The KOH-promoted benzannulation proceeded most probably through the C-F nucleophilic substitution of ortho-fluorobenzamides with 2-propyn-1-ol to give the intermediate of ortho-[(2-propynyl)oxy]benzamide, which underwent the intramolecular hydroamidation in a different manner to afford either seven- or six-membered benzo-fused heterocycles.

Abstract:An anodic oxidation/cyclization of 2-arylbenzoic acids for the synthesis of dibenzopyranones has been developed. The reaction proceeds at room temperature with no oxidant or electrolyte required and exhibits a high atom economy with H2 being the only byproduct. A series of dibenzopyranones was obtained in good to excellent yields. Urolithins A, B, and C are formally synthesized by adopting this method as a key step to demonstrate its synthetic utility.

Abstract:The synthesis of strong electron-withdrawing group substituted aromatic amine and phenol-based benzoxazines is hampered due to the poor solubility of the reactant. In this article, a simple methodology is presented to synthesize the strong electron-withdrawing groups substituted benzoxazine monomers from a solution method using a low-boiling polar solvent. In order to achieve this, we used formaldehyde as a reactant as well as a solvent, and the reaction was carried out for a longer time. Also, benzylaniline derivatives were successfully prepared through benzoxazine. The monomers were polymerized by using solution polymerization method using lithium bromide as a catalyst. The structure of the monomers and polymers was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The thermally activated polymerization of the monomers was evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry, and thermal properties of polymers were analyzed by thermogravimetric analysis.

Abstract:The influence of methylol and phenolic hydroxyl on the thermal properties of polybenzoxazines has been studied using two monofunctional benzoxazine monomers synthesized from para methylol-/ethyl-phenol, aniline and paraformaldehyde. The chemical structures of the synthesized monomers are confirmed by H-1 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), C-13 NMR and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Polymerizations are monitored by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The glass transition temperature (T-g) of each polybenzoxazine is measured by DSC as well as dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), indicating the greatly increased T-g via incorporation of methylol functionality into benzoxazine moiety. Monte Carlo simulations are also applied to further investigate the underlying structure-property relationship between intermolecular hydrogen-bonding network originating from different types of hydroxyl groups and thermal properties of polybenzoxazines. The agreement between the experimental and simulation results provide us with a fundamental understanding of the designing roles in highly thermally stable polybenzoxazines.

Abstract:To study the mesophase formation mechanism of polybenzoxazine, a novel linear benzoxazine oligomer bearing cholesteryl side groups [poly(PC-AC)] was designed and synthesised through thermally activated ring-opening polymerisation of a monofunctional benzoxazine monomer (PC-AC). The PC-AC was obtained by Mannich condensation reaction using mesomorphic amine of cholesteryl 4-aminobenzoate, p-cresol and paraformaldehyde as starting materials. During the isothermal polymerisation of PC-AC monomer, the phase evolution from a crystal phase to an isotropic molten phase and then to a liquid crystal (LC) phase was observed. Since it is PC-AC oligomers that form the LC phase, 'polymerisation-induced LC' mechanism is put forward. We believe that the structure factors including the confined formation of intramolecular hydrogen bonding and the side chain position of mesogenic units also play an important role in the formation of the LC phase. Furthermore, poly(PC-AC) exhibits a smectic mesophase. This work provides new insight into the LC phase formation mechanism of polybenzoxazines. This is very helpful to guide the rational design and synthesis of polymers with high thermal conductivity and high-temperature resistance.A new concept of polymerisation-induced LC is proposed to describe the mesophase formation of a linear benzoxazine oligomer.

Abstract:A novel and efficient synthesis of benzoxazine and 1,3-oxazine derivatives via ligand-free copper(I)-catalyzed one-pot cascade addition/cyclization reaction has been developed. A variety of carbodiimides coupled with o-halophenylmethanols and/or substituted (Z)-3-iodoprop-2-en-1-ols to give the corresponding products in moderate to excellent yields under the mild condition.
Screening of simple carbohydrates as a renewable organocatalyst for the efficient construction of 1,3-benzoxazine scaffold

Abstract:A convenient protocol for the two component preparation of 1,3-benzoxazines by using several protected and unprotected carbohydrate molecules as organocatalysts have been developed which is broadly applicable to condensation reaction between variety of Mannich bases and paraformaldehyde. This study revealed that fructose have much higher catalytic activity than the other carbohydrates and can be an alternative to metal-containing catalysts as a green renewable organocatalyst for efficient and rapid construction of 1,3-benzoxazine skeleton. In this context, 21 benzoxazine compounds were successfully synthesized and spectral characterizations of these compounds were carried out by spectroscopic methods and elemental analysis. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been performed to study the detailed mechanism of organocatalyst assisted synthesis of the benzoxazine monomers. The results obtained from these calculations showed that the more realistic reaction pathway involves formation of a phenolate based intermediate which loses a water molecule to form benzenaminium ion. Subsequently, this ion provides the formation of the corresponding benzoxazines with good yields through the intramolecular ring closure step.

In this paper, structural features and chemical properties of 2-(2-phenyl-1,3-benzoxazol-7-yl)benzaldehyde, a benzoxazole-based heterocycle, were investigated. This multifaceted study combines crystallographic and quantum chemical methods to elucidate molecular geometry, crystal packing, and chemical reactivity of mono and dimeric forms. A rich network of intermolecular interactions, including nonclassical hydrogen bonds (C–H···O and C–H···N), π -stacking, and a unique C=O··· π (ring) interaction, were found to govern the solid-state structure. Multi-approach quantum mechanics analysis using dispersion-corrected DFT (ωB97X-D/aug-cc-pVTZ) revealed the electronic features, energetics, and nature of these interactions. Furthermore, Conceptual DFT identified the molecule as a moderate electrophile and strong nucleophile in polar organic reactions, while Parr functions pinpointed favourable sites for electrophilic and nucleophilic attacks.

Abstract:Purified monofunctional benzoxazine monomers have very low reactivity, and some of them do not polymerize at all after several hours using the usual thermally initiated method. In this work a boron trifluoride complex with water was used to initiate the polymerization of some of the monofunctional benzoxazine monomers that do not polymerize when heated. The reactions were studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The influence of the amine basicity on reactivity was investigated as well as the behavior of a bifunctional monomer. A new proposition for the benzoxazine polymerization mechanism, based on the experimental data, is discussed.
