Abstract:Perovskite nanocrystal (PNC) solar cells have attracted increasing interest in recent years because of their excellent optoelectronic properties and unique advantages, which distinguish them from conventional nanocrystals and their bulk counterparts. This emerging type of photovoltaic is promising but faces many challenges regarding commercialization. Therefore, a comprehensive review is presented on the recent progress and current challenges in PNC solar cells. It begins by reviewing the optoelectronic, unique properties of PNCs for photovoltaic devices. Then, the limiting factors on performance are detailed and analyzed with respect to the Shockley–Queisser limit, followed by a summary of effective strategies for efficiency improvement alongside other promising ideas. Finally, the present challenges are discussed toward high‐efficiency, stable, easy‐to‐process, and low‐cost, commercial, PNC photovoltaics. This review aims to attract further attention to the design and development of PNC solar cells, which will accelerate their progress.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells represent a promising third-generation photovoltaic technology with low fabrication cost and high power conversion efficiency. In light of the rapid development of perovskite materials and devices, a systematic survey on the latest advancements covering a broad range of related work is urgently needed. This review summarizes the recent major advances in the research of perovskite solar cells from a material science perspective. The discussed topics include the devices based on different type of perovskites (organic-inorganic hybrid, all-inorganic, and lead-free perovskite and perovskite quantum dots), the properties of perovskite defects, different type of charge transport materials (organic, polymeric, and inorganic hole transport materials and inorganic and organic electron transport materials), counter electrodes, and interfacial materials used to improve the efficiency and stability of devices. Most discussions focus on the key progresses reported within the recent five years. Meanwhile, the major issues limiting the production of perovskite solar cells and the prospects for the future development of related materials are discussed.

Abstract:CONSPECTUS: To tackle the foreseen energy crisis and serious environmental problem caused by conventional energy resources, solar cells, or photovoltaics (PV), a technology that can directly convert sunlight to electricity has been considered to be one of the most important and cost-effective clean energy techniques that benefit the environment. So far, silicon-based PVs have dominated the market due to mature fabrication techniques and their relatively good power conversion efficiency (PCE) and excellent stability. In the past decades, metal halide perovskite PVs have been a major direction of current PV research owing to their intriguing optoelectronic performance. The record PCE of perovskite PV cells has unprecedently increased from an original 3.8 to 25.5%. The typical structure of a photovoltaic perovskite is ABX(3), where A refers to a monovalent cation such as methylammonium (MA(+)), cesium (Cs+), or formamidinium (FA(+)); B refers to a divalent cation such as Pb2+ or Sn2+; and X refers to a halide anion. In general, a perovskite PV device consists of an active layer of the perovskite absorber, which is connected by a hole-transporting layer (HTL) and an electron-transporting layer (ETL). In the beginning, the strategies to improve the PCEs mainly focused on developing an effective method to grow a smooth and continuous polycrystalline film. After the improvement of the baseline PCE of the perovskite PVs, various techniques were employed to reduce the defects of perovskite formed at grain boundaries and surfaces, further pushing the PCEs of perovskite PV devices to over 20%. In the meantime, the discovery of suitable and low-cost interfacial materials such as electron-transporting materials and hole-transporting materials has appealed to the attention of the perovskite research community to accelerate the commercialization of the perovskite PVs. In this Account, we start from our efforts to develop facile and effective fabrication strategies to obtain smooth and continuous polycrystalline perovskite thin films, including vapor-assisted and moisture-assisted perovskite crystal growth. The strategies and the in-depth mechanisms of preventing the formation of specific detrimental defects accumulated at grain boundaries or the surface are also portrayed by designing various passivation molecules with certain functional groups, such as carbonyl groups, amine groups, or sulfonic groups. Some systematically designed electron- or hole-transporting materials to improve the charge extraction and collection efficiency in perovskite PV devices are discussed as well. Finally, future perspectives for further enhancing the long-term stability and PCE are proposed to accelerate the commercialization of perovskite PV devices in the next decade.

Abstract:Metal halide perovskite single crystals hold promise for photovoltaics with high efficiency and stability due to their superior optoelectronic properties and weak bulk ion migration. The past several years have witnessed rapid development of single‐crystal perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with efficiency rocketed from 6.5% to 24.3%, however, which still lags behind their polycrystalline counterparts. Moreover, the poor device stability under light illumination is contrary to the high ion migration barrier of perovskite single crystals. The key limiting factors should be the low crystalline quality and high surface defect density of solution‐grown thin single crystals. Under this circumstance, a review paper summarizing the recent progress and challenges will be instructive for future development of this emerging field. In this manuscript, the crystal engineering used to enhance carrier transport and suppress carrier recombination in vertical single‐crystal PSCs will be summarized initially, including crystal growth, component control, surface and interface modification. Subsequently, the application of perovskite single crystals in lateral single‐crystal PSCs will be discussed and compared with the conventionally vertical structure. Finally, the challenges and proposed strategies for the development of single‐crystal PSCs are provided.

Abstract:Over the past decade, lead halide perovskites have emerged as one of the leading photovoltaic materials due to their long carrier lifetimes, high absorption coefficients, high tolerance to defects, and facile processing methods. With a bandgap of ~1.6 eV, lead halide perovskite solar cells have achieved power conversion efficiencies in excess of 25%. Despite this, poor material stability along with lead contamination remains a significant barrier to commercialization. Recently, low-dimensional perovskites, where at least one of the structural dimensions is measured on the nanoscale, have demonstrated significantly higher stabilities, and although their power conversion efficiencies are slightly lower, these materials also open up the possibility of quantum-confinement effects such as carrier multiplication. Furthermore, both bulk perovskites and low-dimensional perovskites have been demonstrated to form hybrids with silicon nanocrystals, where numerous device architectures can be exploited to improve efficiency. In this review, we provide an overview of perovskite solar cells, and report the current progress in nanoscale perovskites, such as low-dimensional perovskites, perovskite quantum dots, and perovskite-nanocrystal hybrid solar cells.

Abstract:For the first time in 2009, the inorganic-organic hybrid perovskite materials were applied in liquid dye-sensitized solar cells. In 2013, the power conversion efficiency successfully reached 15%, followed by great amount of research papers bursting out. Till August 2014, the highest efficiency is certified to 17.9%, and the reported efficiency is even up to 19.3%. They quickly go beyond dye-sensitized solar cells and organic solar cells. It is expected the perovskite has its efficiency same to the single-crystal silicon cells. The "game changer" of solar cells is coming. The perovskite solar cells are cheap and easily to be made, which will benefit both science and industry. This review summarized recent development of both perovskite materials and solar cell devices, not only including new material developments of perovskite compositions, structures, and fabrication methods, but also focusing on device structures, charge transfer mechanism and stability properties of perovskite solar cells. Their perspective is also estimated.

Abstract:Since the first publication by Miyasaka in 2009 on the use of lead halide perovskite as a light-harvesting material (Kojima, A.; Teshima, K.; Shirai, Y.; Miyasaka, T. Organometal Halide Perovskites as Visible-Light Sensitizers for Photovoltaic Cells. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2009, 131, 6050), unprecedented successes have been achieved and great efforts have been made in the field of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) to push the power conversion efficiency (PCE) past 25%, which corresponds to ∼80% of this material’s theoretical bandgap limit determined on the basis of the Shockley–Queisser theory. Recent progress is mainly attributed to the development of key strategies that effectively reduce the defects on the surface of the perovskite layer and minimize non-radiative recombination at the interfaces, thereby enhancing device efficiency. For future development of PSCs with PCEs exceeding 26%, this Perspective highlights an investigation of the key factors that have allowed realization of efficient PSCs with state-of-the-art PCEs and includes a discussion of practical strategies, including full optimization of the electron-transport layer, minimization of defect loss related to non-radiative recombination, and enhancement of light-harvesting near the band-edge.

Abstract:Perovskite materials have unique optoelectronic properties, such as high light absorption coefficient, long carrier diffusion length, adjustable band gap, etc., which make it have huge application potential in the field of solar cells. As a new generation of high efficiency photovoltaic technology, perovskite solar cells have attracted extensive attention from researchers around the world in recent years due to their unique photoelectric conversion characteristics and low manufacturing cost. This paper briefly summarizes the working principle of perovskite solar cells, firstly reviews its development process from the 1990s to the global market from the laboratory, and then focuses on the research progress of improving the efficiency of perovskite solar cells. Not only can the efficiency of the cell be greatly improved by enhancing light absorption, optimizing carrier transport and innovating the structure design of the cell, but also can be greatly improved by optimizing the interface structure between the perovskite layer and the electron transport layer and the hole transport layer, as well as optimizing the material properties, improving the preparation process and device structure. Finally, in the context of globalization, its market potential is deeply analyzed, and its commercial use and future development direction are further prospected.

Abstract:The possible exhaustion of fossil fuels in the near future and soaring global energy demand have driven the search for new types of sustainable and renewable alternatives. Perovskite (CH3NH3PbX3, X = I, Br, Cl) solar cells are a type of solar cell based on a perovskite absorber, most commonly a tin halide-based or hybrid organic–inorganic lead material, as the visible-light sensitizer layer, which produces electricity from sunlight. Recently, perovskite solar cells have received substantial worldwide attention. Compared with traditional solar cells, the perovskite solar cells can obtain high efficiency with a simple architecture and via a cost-effective process. In the latest 5 years, the efficiency of perovskite solar cells to convert power has skyrocketed from 3.8 % to more than 19.3 %. It is the fastest advancing solar technology to date. The highest efficiency demonstrated by perovskite solar cells is higher than that of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). A lager number of research groups have demonstrated that perovskite solar cells may ultimately boost efficiency as high as 25 %. The high efficiency and cheap production costs make it evident that perovskite solar cells have great potential to be commercialized soon. In this review, the history, materials, processing and architecture of solar cells are discussed to obtain a better understanding of high-performance perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:The key progress in the development of solar cells based on mixed organic-inorganic halide perovskite was reviewed. Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have developed rapidly and achieved highest efficiency exceeding 20% in these years. The origin, working principle and fabrication technology of PSCs are stated, and several promising methods to realize the industrialization of the solar cell modules have been put forward. Meanwhile, two main problems existing in PSCs have been pointed out, hysteresis in the photocurrent density-voltage measurement and the instability of perovskite, which have impacted the application of PSCs seriously. Efforts and study in order to solve these problems are also listed. The fundamental mechanism still needs further investigation so as to improve the performance of PSCs and realize their large-scale application eventually.

Abstract:Development history of perovskite solar cells is briefly reviewed.Perovskite solar cells are solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells.The microcosmic mechanism of perovskite solar cells is put forward.Energy levels of the TiO2/CH 3 NH 3 PbI3/spiro-OMeTAD junction are given,showing that the conduction band minimum and valence band maximum of CH 3 NH 3 PbI3 are well positioned for electrons injection into TiO2 and holes transfer to spiro-OMeTAD, respectively.Photovoltaic performance parameters of perovskite solar cells such as short-circuit current density,open-circuit voltages,power conversion efficiency and fill factor are summarized.The power conversion efficiency,short-circuit current density and open-circuit voltage of perovskite solar cells exceed that of a-Si thin film solar cells,while the fill factor approaches that of the latter.A conclusion is drawn that perovskite-based solar cells are expected to rea-lize industrialization and become the next generation thin-film solar cells.The bottleneck of marketization for perovs-kite-based solar cells is the fabrication of expensive hole transportation layer.The researches aim to resolve it are sum-marized.

Abstract:As an important kind of clean and renewable energy source, solar cells are attracting more and more attention in recent years due to their great potential in addressing the energy crisis issues. In this context, developing novel solar cells with both high power conversion efficiency and low cost is becoming a hot research topic worldwide. In 2009, CH3NH3PbI3 and CH3NH3PbBr3 were firstly fabricated as quantum dot and used in dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) with a power conversion efficiency of 3.8%. Since then, many fascinating breakthroughs on perovskite-based solar cells have been achieved in an amazing speed, especially in recent 5 years. The overall performance of perovskite-based solar cells has outperformed several other types of traditional solar cells. Due to the importance of perovskite-based solar cells, the related research has been elected as one of the top 10 scientific breakthroughs in 2013 by Science magazine. So far, a high power conversion efficiency up to 20.1% has been reported by Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology (KRICT). The perovskite-based solar cells are with low cost and easy to be fabricated. Based on their excellent properties, such as good optical absorption and high charge transfer efficiency, breakthroughs on much higher power conversion efficiencies can be expected in the future. Here we summarize some state-of-the-art research advances on perovskite-based solar cells achieved from 2014 to now. We focus on the basics of perovskite-based solar cells, interface control, synthesis routes, etc. Current strategies for improving the power conversion efficiency, stability and eco-friendliness are summarized. Moreover, we propose the challenges that need to be overcome in the near future. Firstly, the working mechanism of those high efficiency solar cells is still an open question. Secondly, how to improve both the power conversion efficiency and the stability is still a big challenge. The perovskite-based solar cells are actually very sensitive to the ambient water vapor and oxygen. Thirdly, the large-area mass production of perovskite-based solar cells has not been realized so far. The size of the perovskite-based solar cell devices obtained in the laboratory scale is only several centimeters, which can not meet the industrial production demand. Finally, how to avoid using heavy metals, such as Pb, and keep the high power conversion efficiency as well, is also a big challenge. In the future, perovskite solar cells are supposed to be lead-free without sacrificing their high efficiency.

Abstract:The past decade has witnessed the rapid development of perovskite solar cells, with their power conversion efficiency increasing from an initial 3.8% to over 26%, approaching the Shockley-Queisser (S-Q) limit for single-junction solar cells. Multijunction solar cells have garnered significant attention due to their tremendous potential to surpass the S-Q limit by reducing thermalization losses and wide light harvesting. The wide bandgap tunability of metal halide perovskite materials makes them highly suitable for sub-cells in tandem solar cells (TSCs). Currently, LONGi Green Energy Technology Co., Ltd. in China has set a world record efficiency of 34.6% based on a dual-junction perovskitesilicon TSCs, far surpassing the single-junction efficiencies of each sub-cell. Consequently, perovskite based TSCs are widely regarded as the next-generation photovoltaic products in the solar industry. Despite the significant efficiency improvements, several challenges still impede the commercial application of perovskite based TSCs, such as the instability of perovskite materials and difficulties in achieving large-scale production. This review summarizes the progresses and optimization strategies of perovskite based TSCs. This review also identifies the critical issues hindering multijunction solar cells. Finally, the potential solutions to address these challenges are proposed to advance the development of perovskite based TSCs.

Abstract:A novel organic/inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cell has attracted great attention since June 2013, which is considered as one of the top 10 scientific breakthroughs in 2013. The solid planar structured perovskite solar cells are easy to prepare by means of chemical solution process with low fabrication cost and have already demonstrated the power conversion efficiency higher than 15%, likely surpassing 20% in the near future. The perovskite solar cells promise a bright future and would promote the development of the solar cell industry to make enormously significant impacts on economy and activities of the human society. In this paper, we review the progress in the recent development, fundamentals, and manufacturing of the perovskite solar cells, with the attention focused on the discussion of the key scientific challenges, the prospects of the future directions and the possible fabrication processes. We believe this paper would assist the researchers to embrace the opportunities of keeping up with the rapid progresses worldwide in this newly emerging solar cell field, contributing to the development of the green energy and environment in China.

Abstract:In article number <a href="https://doi.org/10.1002/aenm.202000453">2000453</a>, Weili Yu, Chunlei Guo and co‐workers demonstrate that by combining the space‐limiting technique and the anti‐temperature crystallization method, millimeter sized MAPbI3 perovskite monocrystals with thickness from tens of nanometers to micrometers can be fabricated. Solar cells based on the 300 nm thick perovskite monocrystal are prepared, which show 3% enhancement in power conversion efficiency (PCE) compared to their polycrystalline counterparts. This work provides a scalable way to synthesize high quality perovskite crystals with less grains and grain boundaries, is believed a key step to develop perovskite single crystal solar cells with high performance.

Abstract:As a matter of fact, the subversive photovoltaic technology of the perovskite solar cell has the benefits of high energy efficiency in conversion, low production costs, and ease of preparation in recent years. A larger number of scholars have given perovskite solar cells a lot of attention because of their advantages such as simple process, roll-to-roll production and low cost, as well as have become the most eye-catching new generation photovoltaic devices. At the same time, PSCs have enormous potential, as seen by the rise in efficiency from 3.81% to 25.7% in just a decade. On this basis, the perovskite solar cells' mechanism of operation and device architecture are described and discussed in this study. To be specific, its fabrication is also summarized and discussed accordingly. According to the analysis, the future perovskite solar cell development issues and difficulties are also anticipated and demonstrated at the same time. Overall, these results shed light on guiding further exploration of solar cells.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells have been developing rapidly in the past several years, and their power conversion efficiency has reached over 20%, nearing that of polycrystalline silicon solar cells. Because the diffusion length of the hole in perovskites is longer than that of the electron, the performance of the device can be improved by using an electron transporting layer, e.g., TiO2, ZnO and TiO2/Al2O3. Nano-structured electron transporting materials facilitate not only electron collection but also morphology control of the perovskites. The properties, morphology and preparation methods of perovskites are reviewed in the present article. A comprehensive understanding of the relationship between the structure and property will benefit the precise control of the electron transporting process and thus further improve the performance of perovskite solar cells.
