Abstract:Noninvasive laser lipolysis exhibits a considerable potential in the treatment of obesity, but laser absorption by water may lead to dermal thermal damage. A novel multi-pulsed cryogen spray (MCS) method for external laser lipolysis was proposed to protect normal skin tissues. Numerical simulations on the basis of multilayer uniform skin model and Pennes biological heat transfer equation were conducted to investigate the cooling performance after continuous and R134a MCS in conjunction with 1210/1064 nm laser irradiation. Continuous spray cannot meet the requirement of laser lipolysis. Under the same accumulative spray duration, the cooling depth and temperature of MCS were much larger than that of continuous spray. With the pulse duration of 10 ms, the pulse delay of 2500 ms, the number of pulses of 10, and the duty cycle of 0.004, the cooling depth of the R134a MCS can reach to 5000 μm, and the minimum temperature in the spray center of 1 mm below the skin tissue reduced to 11 °C. These conditions can effectively provide cold protection for skin undergoing external laser with the wavelength of 1210/1064 nm, the pulse width of 100 ms, and the energy density of 80 J/cm2, which can reach the dissolution thickness of 3.4 mm.
