Abstract:Current agricultural practices are increasingly considered to be unsustainable, causing serious threats to the environment. To meet international and European sustainability goals, the transition to sustainable agriculture is pivotal and ways to achieve it are currently under discussion. Conventional agricultural systems are typically highly productive, ensuring high yields for feeding a growing global population, but with significant environmental costs. Contrarily, organic agriculture is perceived as a sustainable farming option, however, is often criticized for achieving lower yields, so that when this factor is taken into account, its advantages are often questioned. To compare the environmental performance of different cropping system, life cycle assessment (LCA) has been increasingly applied over time. The present work aims at systematically reviewing LCA studies that consistently assess and compare the environmental impacts of organic and conventional crop systems, enabling the understanding of the environmental performance of organic and conventional management systems, including a broad spectrum of impacts (15 environmental indicators in total). The systematic review, complemented with a meta-analysis, resulted in the selection and analysis of 77 pairwise comparative LCA studies. These perform a comparison between the two cultivation management systems (i.e. organic and conventional) of a specific crop or group of crops, cultivated under similar pedoclimatic conditions in both systems, and show consistency in the main LCA methodological choices. Independently from the functional unit adopted (mass or land-based) and despite the lower yields, organic systems show overall a better environmental performance than conventional ones. These results are valid for the majority of the impacts assessed (climate change, ozone depletion, ecotoxicity, human toxicity, acidification, eutrophication, use of resources, water, and energy). Certain crop classes systematically show lower impacts when organically cultivated, although exception exists within the same class (e.g. overall trend valid for fruit but not for apples). Fertilisation resulted to be the cultivation process responsible for most of the impacts in conventional systems, playing a key role also in organic systems together with activities linked to machinery and field operations. The heterogeneity of modelling approaches encountered makes the comparison of cropping systems difficult and the definition of trends challenging. Modelling differences were found regarding the choice of functional unit and inventory models to estimate emissions, the inclusion or exclusion of certain processes or flows in the inventory, and the selection and modelling of impact categories. In addition, key aspects such as soil quality, biodiversity and water use are still poorly investigated.
