Abstract:Objective:To analyze the clinical effect of intercondylar fracture of humerus with open reduction and internal fixation with tension band or double plate.Methods:From January 1999 to February 2004,48 patients with intercondylar fracture of humerus were treated with open reduction.According to classification of Riseborough,type Ⅱ had 6 cases,type Ⅲ 13 cases and type Ⅳ 29 cases.Of them,28 cases were treated through the bilateral approach through triceps brachii and 20 cases through olecranon osteotomy approach.23 cases were fixed with tension band and 25 cases with double plate.Results:48 patients were followed up from 12 to 48 months with an average of 31 months.Depending on Cassebaum's scoring system of function of elbow joint,21 cases obtained excellent,18 good,6 fair and 3 poor,the rate of excellent and good were 81.3%.Conclusion:The bilateral approach through triceps brachii and olecranon osteotomy approach could provide adequate exposure for visualization.Tension band and double plate could provide for reliable fixation.It could make satisfactory clinical results through choosing suitable surgical approach,internal fixation methods and early exercises.
Arthrolysis of posttraumatic elbow stiffness with assistance of external fixator

Abstract:Objective To investigate the value of external fixator in the treatment of posttraumatic elbow stiffness.Methods From January 2007 to December 2009,25 patients with posttraumatic elbow stiffness received surgical arthrolysis with assistance of external fixator.There were 10 patients with grade 1 stiffness,12 patients with grade 2 stiffness and three patients with grade 3 stiffness.The range of motion (ROM) was 0°-75° ( average 33.4°) preoperative,with ＜ 30° in 12 patients.For the patients with grade 1 stiffness,intraoperative distraction with an external fixator rather than open arthrolysis was performed ; for the patients with grade 2 stiffness,the heterotopic ossification was removed through a limited approach before the external fixator was applied; for the patients with grade 3 stiffness,additional osteotomy and internal fixation before arthrolysis were performed.After operation,there was a rehabilitation phase,followed by mobilization of the elbow joint under protection of the external fixator for a mean period of six weeks.Results The intraoperative mean ROM was 105.6°,which was significantly improved than that before operation (P ＜0.05).The maximal flexion degree was above 110°in all patients.No instability occurred.Two patients were excluded from the follow-up:one had ulna fracture two weeks after operation due to an incorrect placement of the pin,and additional internal fixation was then carried out;another patient had numbness in the ulna side when flexed the elbow after arthrolysis,and the ulna nerve transposition was performed through another operation.Other patients were followed up for a mean period of six months.At the latest follow-up,the mean ROM was 97.4°( range,70°-130°),significantly improved than that before operation (P ＜ 0.05 ),and lest 8.2°on average (0°-15 °) compared with the intraoperative ROM (P ＞ O.05).The maximal flexion in all patients was above 100° Conclusion With the advantages of minimal invasive or noninvasive,indirect capsular traction,stability maintenance during the movement,and prevention of the motion loss during the rehabilitation,arthrolysis of the elbow joint with the use of external fixation frame can be a good alternative in the treatment of posttraumatic elbow stiffness.

Abstract:Joint stiffness after elbow surgery is not a rare complication, and is always accompanied by deformity. The causes of joint stiffness are multiple in different patients, and divided into intrinsic and extrinsic causes. Herein, we report an unusual case of posttraumatic elbow stiffness due to multiple and rare causes.A 19-year-old male was hospitalized with the loss of motion of the left elbow for over ten years. Left limb computed tomography revealed left elbow stiffness with bony block and connection. The patient underwent surgery, and the etiology of joint stiffness was found to be a rare combination of common and uncommon causes. During an 18-mo follow-up period, the patient's left elbow had normal motion and he was symptom-free.However, this case combined with multiple and rare causes highlights that the patient with scar physique is likely to be accompanied with more severe soft tissue, nerve contracture, and heterotypic ossification, even during recurrence.

Abstract:Aim: To investigate surgical treatment, postoperative rehabilitation and prevention of heterotopic ossification (HO) in patients with post-traumatic elbow stiffness. Methods: We performed a retrospective review of patients with post-traumatic elbow stiffness combined with HO between 2007 and 2021. This study was performed on a total of 15 patients (18 elbows) admitted to our hospital, consisting of 12 males and 3 females, with post-traumatic stiffness of the elbow combined with HO, where elbow function could not be recovered by rehabilitation and orthosis treatment. Fifteen patients were treated by surgical excision of heterotopic bones and release of elbow contracture combined with postoperative rehabilitation and orthosis-wearing. Comprehensive treatments, including radiation, oral ibuprofen medication, and manipulation techniques to improve range of motion, were used to prevent HO recurrence. The flexion–extension arc and functional score of the elbow were measured after treatment and compared with the preoperative measurements. Roentgenography was used to observe HO recurrence. Results: After surgical treatment and postoperative rehabilitation, the patients’ range of motion improved, and the functional score improved considerably. The postoperative flexion-extension arc and The Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) functional score were statistically significantly higher than the preoperative values (p < 0.01). Roentgenographic examination showed no HO recurrence during the follow-up period. Conclusion: Surgical excision of heterotopic bones and elbow contracture release combined with postoperative rehabilitation and preventative HO measures can be an effective treatment for cases of post-traumatic elbow stiffness combined with HO, for which conservative treatment is ineffective.

Abstract:The treatment of elbow stiffness remains a challenge for orthopedic surgeons. A hinged external fixator with distraction ability has recently emerged as a new option in the surgical treatment of elbow stiffness. Between January 2007 and December 2009, twenty-five posttraumatic stiff elbows (mean patient age, 29.2 years) received distraction arthrolysis from 1 surgeon group (W.J.W., L.H., P.Z.J.) at the authors' institution. For patients with only periarticular soft tissue contracture (grade 1), close mechanical distraction was performed with the assistance of an external fixator under anesthesia; open arthrolysis was avoided as much as possible. For patients who also had heterotopic ossification (grade 2), it was removed through a limited approach before the external fixator was applied. For patients with osteoarticular surface damage or destruction (grade 3), osteoarticular integrity was restored before arthrolysis. Range of motion increased markedly, from 33.4° (range, 0°-75°) preoperatively to 105.6° (range, 80°-140°) immediately postoperatively (Student's t test, P<.05). Of the 25 patients, 23 were followed for a mean of 16 months. No serious complications occurred. Mean range of motion was 97.4° (range, 70°-130°) at final follow-up, a significant increase from preoperatively (Student's t test, P<.05). No significant loss of range of motion was found at final follow-up compared with intraoperative values (average 8.2° loss; Student's t test, P>.05). This study suggests that a hinged external distraction fixator is a less invasive option for treating posttraumatic elbow stiffness and prevents contracture recurrence after arthrolysis.
Surgical treatment of elbow stiffness caused by post-traumatic heterotopic ossification

Abstract:Background: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is considered as a common extrinsic cause of elbow stiffness. The purpose of this study was to show the results of surgical treatment for post-traumatic elbow stiffness caused by HO in a large, consecutive series of patients in a single unit. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 77 surgically treated patients with post-traumatic elbow stiffness caused by HO. Final motion arc and Mayo Elbow Performance Index (MEPI) were assessed as final results. Univariable and multivariable analyses were done to determine which factors had an effect on the final motion arc. Results: The average arc of elbow motion increased from 45° preoperatively to 112°, with an improvement of 67° at the final follow-up evaluation. The mean MEPI score was 91.9. At the final evaluation, 65 patients (84.4%) obtained a total motion arc of ≥100°. Recurrent HO was observed in 16 patients postoperatively, and 6 underwent repeated surgical release. The time from the initial injury to surgical release with a cutoff value of 19 months was the only independent factor affecting the final range of motion (ROM) in multivariable median regression analysis. With the numbers studied, no significant association was found between the final ROM and other clinical variables except for the recurrence of HO (93° vs 117°). Conclusions: From the results of our study, we can support the surgical treatment of elbow stiffness caused by post-traumatic HO regardless of preoperative ROM. However, recurrence of heterotopic bone and delay in surgery of more than 19 months are associated with less favorable results.
A novel internal fixation technique for the treatment of olecranon avulsion fracture

Abstract:Objective Tension band wiring and proximal ulnar plate fixation are commonly used fixation methods for olecranon fractures. However, they may not be suitable for repairing proximal olecranon avulsion fractures. In this study, we present a novel fixation technique for the treatment of proximal avulsion fractures, which is a T-shaped plate combined with a wire. Materials and methods Between March 2016 and May 2020, surgery was performed on 16 patients with proximal olecranon avulsion fractures by using a T-shaped plate combined with a wire fixation at our hospital. The parameters followed were fracture healing time, elbow range of motion (ROM), related functional scores (the Mayo score and the DASH score), and complications related to internal fixation. Results The average follow-up period was 17 (14–21) months and fractures had healed in all patients included in the study, with an average fracture union of 9.25 (8–12) weeks. No patient reported fixation failure, serious infection, or revision surgery. The average ROM of the elbow joint was 123° (120–135°). The Mayo score was excellent in 11 patients and good in 5. The average DASH score was 17.75 (12–24). Conclusion Olecranon avulsion fractures were fixed with a T-shaped steel plate combined with a steel wire, which can be used for early functional exercise and for achieving good final functional results. This method can provide stable fixation, especially in elderly patients with osteoporosis.

Risk factors for dysfunctional elbow stiffness following operative fixation of distal humerus fractures

Abstract:Background: Elbow stiffness is 1 of the most common complications after operative fixation of distal humerus fractures; however, there is relatively limited literature assessing which factors are associated with this problem. The purpose of this study is to identify risk factors associated with dysfunctional elbow stiffness in distal humerus fractures after operative fixation. Methods: A retrospective review of all distal humerus fractures that underwent operative fixation (AO/OTA 13A-C) at a single level 1 trauma center from November 2014 to October 2021. A minimum 6-month follow-up was required for inclusion or the outcome of interest. Dysfunctional elbow stiffness was defined as a flexion-extension arc of less than 100° at latest follow-up or any patient requiring surgical treatment for limited elbow range of motion. Results: A total of 110 patients with distal humerus fractures were included in the study: 54 patients comprised the elbow stiffness group and 56 patients were in the control group. Average follow-up of 343 (59 to 2079) days. Multiple logistic regression showed that orthogonal plate configuration (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 5.70, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.91-16.99, P = .002), and longer operative time (aOR: 1.86, 95% CI: 1.11-3.10, P = .017) were independently associated with an increased odds of elbow stiffness. OTA/AO 13A type fractures were significantly associated with a decreased odds of stiffness (aOR: 0.16, 95% CI: 0.03-0.80, P = .026). Among 13C fractures, olecranon osteotomy (aOR: 5.48, 95% CI: 1.08-27.73, P = .040) was also associated with an increased odds of elbow stiffness. There were no significant differences in injury mechanism, Gustilo-Anderson classification, reduction quality, days to surgery from admission, type of fixation, as well as rates of ipsilateral upper extremity fracture, neurovascular injury, nonunion, or infection between the 2 groups. Conclusion: Dysfunctional elbow stiffness was observed in 49.1% of patients who underwent operative fixation of distal humerus fractures in the present study. Orthogonal plate configuration, olecranon osteotomy, and longer operative time were associated with increased odds of dysfunctional elbow stiffness; however, 13A type fractures were associated with decreased odds of stiffness. Patients with these injuries should be counseled on their risk of stiffness following surgery and modifiable risk factors like plate positioning and performing an olecranon osteotomy should be considered by surgeons.
Treatment of supracondylar fractures of the humerus in adults using a novel anatomical locking plate on the anterior distal humerus: a case report

Abstract:Background: Due to its unique anatomical characteristics, supracondylar fractures of the humerus are often difficult to achieve firm fixation with internal fixation equipment, resulting in delayed functional exercise, often leaving cubitus varus deformity, elbow stiffness, contractures, and other complications. Here, we report an adult patient with a supracondylar fracture of the humerus who underwent internal fixation through an anterior median incision in the humerus with our self-developed anterior anatomical locking plate of the distal humerus. Case presentation: A 29-year-old male patient of Chinese ethnicity with trauma-induced right supracondylar fracture of the humerus and multiple soft tissue contusions, without nerve damage, blood vessel damage, or other injuries, underwent an internal incision in our hospital using a new anatomical locking plate for the anterior distal humerus fixed treatment. During the 16-month follow-up period, the patient's elbow range of motion was almost completely restored, functional scores were excellent, and there were no minor or major postoperative complications. Conclusion: In this study, we propose a surgical reconstruction strategy for adult patients with supracondylar humeral fractures. Through the anterior median incision of the humerus, open reduction and internal fixation were performed with an anatomic locking plate on the anterior side of the distal humerus to restore and fix the structure of the distal humerus, and satisfactory clinical results were achieved in our case.
Heterotopic Ossification after Arthroscopic Elbow Release

Abstract:ObjectivesTo evaluate the incidence and risk factors of heterotopic ossification (HO) after arthroscopic elbow release. MethodsThe present study included 101 elbows, with arthroscopic release performed on 98 patients over the 5‐year period from November 2011 to December 2015. Patients were divided into three groups: group 1, with elbow arthritis, including 46 elbows in 43 patients; group 2, with posttraumatic extrinsic elbow stiffness (without intraarticular adhesion), including 23 elbows in 23 patients; and group 3, with intrinsic contractures (with intraarticular adhesion), including 32 elbows in 32 patients. Arthroscopic elbow release was performed under general anesthesia. For intrinsic stiffness, a radiofrequency device was applied to release intraarticular scar tissue and create work space, which was rarely necessary in groups 1 and 2. In the postoperative period, X‐rays and CT scans were assessed at follow up to determine if there was HO formation, which was diagnosed when new calcifications were identified. The functional recovery was evaluated by comparing the range of motion (ROM) and pain relief preoperativley and postoperatively in each group. Other complications were also assessed postoperatively. ResultsThe patients' mean age was 38.6 years (range, 12–66), with 57 males and 41 females. Mean follow‐up was 21 months (range, 4–56). The active ROM and Mayo elbow performance index (MEPS) were improved from 93° ± 8.3° to 126° ± 12.4° (P < 0.05) and 71.4 ± 7.6 to 91.3 ± 8.7 (P < 0.001) in group 1, 66° ± 10.3° to 121° ± 10.7° (P < 0.005) and 65.6 ± 9.2 to 93.5 ± 11.2 (P < 0.05) in group 2, and 46° ± 6.7° to 91° ± 11.1° (P < 0.001) and 52.3 ± 6.4 to 80.6 ± 9.4 (P < 0.005) in group 3. HO developed in 25/101 cases (25%) and 4 patients with severe cases underwent repeat surgery. Those in group 1 were primarily arthritis patients; there were 3 out 46 cases with minor HO evident on X‐ray. In group 2, 1/23 had minor HO. In group 3, 21/32 patients had HO; 4 cases were considered severe, 4 were considered moderate, and 13 were considered minor. The average flexion–extension arc was improved by 47° at the last follow up. Other postoperative complications included 8 cases of prolonged drainage from portal sites, 17 transient nerve palsies, 1 permanent radial nerve injury, and 1 patient who developed delayed‐onset ulnar neuritis. This patient was fully recovered 5 months after surgery. ConclusionsThe high incidence of HO formation after arthroscopic elbow release may relate to improper application of a radiofrequency device. Minimizing thermal injury from these radiofrequency devices could reduce HO formation and improve postoperative functional recovery.

Elbow stiffness due to malunited capitellum fracture: A case report and the role of 3D printing in surgical management

Abstract:Introduction: Elbow stiffness is an uncommon condition that significantly impacting a patient's daily activities. Trauma is the most frequent cause of elbow stiffness. However, capitellum fractures are rare, accounting for approximately 1 % of elbow fractures. They are often misdiagnosed due to nonspecific symptoms and the complex anatomy of the elbow joint. Case presentation: We report the case of a 54-year-old female who presented with left elbow stiffness eight months after a traumatic incident. On physical examination, her left elbow extension was +10°, and flexion was restricted to 65°, with no limitation in pronation or supination. Imaging studies revealed a malunited capitellum with osteophytes at the posterolateral site of the olecranon. A 3D-printed model of her elbow was created based on a CT scan to aid surgical planning. She underwent capsulectomy and osteotomy and was stabilized with two bioabsorbable P(L/DL)LA pins. Six months postoperatively, the patient's elbow range of motion was fully restored, and no complications were observed. Clinical discussion: Elbow stiffness resulting from the malunion of a capitellum fracture typically necessitates surgical intervention to restore functional movement in the elbow. Conclusion: Capitellum fractures are uncommon and frequently underdiagnosed, leading to complications such as elbow stiffness and reduced functionality. Early detection is crucial, as delayed diagnosis can result in complex management due to malunion. 3D printing from CT scans helps surgeons accurately evaluate malunions and plan precise surgical interventions.
Incidence of and Risk Factors for the Development of Asymptomatic Heterotopic Ossification after Elbow Fracture Fixation

Abstract:Objective This study was performed to investigate the incidence of and risk factors for asymptomatic heterotopic ossification (HO) after open reduction and internal fixation of elbow fractures. Methods This retrospective analysis involved 197 patients with elbow fractures treated operatively from 2014 to 2017 at our institution. Patient-related and clinical variables were recorded. Univariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression were performed to reveal independent risk factors for postoperative HO. In addition, a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was performed to assess the ability of risk factors to predict the development of postoperative HO. Results The overall rate of asymptomatic HO after surgery was 18.78%. The incidence was highest in terrible triad injuries and lowest in capitellum fractures. Independent predictors of asymptomatic HO identified by the multivariate analysis were underlying diseases, fracture dislocation, and a prolonged operative time. The area under the ROC curve for underlying diseases, fracture dislocation, and a prolonged operative time were 0.593, 0.596, and 0.694, respectively. Conclusions The incidence of postoperative asymptomatic HO in patients with elbow fractures is high. Clinicians should employ prophylaxis to avoid HO when treating patients with elbow fractures who have underlying diseases, fracture dislocation, or a prolonged operative time.
Stability of severely stiff elbows after complete open release: treatment by ligament repair with suture anchors and hinged external fixator

Abstract:Background: Instability is a crucial issue in severe post-traumatic elbow stiffness during complete-release surgery. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of ligament repair using a suture anchor in the operative treatment of severely stiff elbows for which a hinged external fixator was indicated. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 46 cases of severely stiff elbows (flexion arc <60°) undergoing open release. During the operation, all 46 elbows were noted to have instability. Suture anchors were applied to restore the ligament if it was impossible to repair the ligament directly, and a hinged external fixator was simultaneously applied to protect the vulnerable ligament and facilitate rehabilitation. No allograft or autograft was used in any of our cases. The stability, arc of motion, Mayo Elbow Performance Score, ulnar nerve symptoms, and radiographs were evaluated. Results: At a mean follow-up of 24.3 months, the postoperative Mayo Elbow Performance Score was 91 points, as compared with 63 points preoperatively. The mean flexion arc improved from 25° to 126°. Three patients presented with moderate elbow instability when the hinged external fixator was removed; however, all of them regained stability by the last follow-up. Furthermore, 7 cases of new-onset nerve palsy were noted; however, all of them resolved with conservative management. None of the patients required secondary surgery for any reason. Conclusions: Repair of an avulsed collateral ligament with suture anchors and hinged external fixation was effective in restoring functional mobility in patients with severe post-traumatic elbow stiffness after complete release. This could be an option for treating ankylosed, severely or very severely stiff elbows.

Abstract:Accessory bones around the elbow are scarce, with a reported mean incidence rate of 0.77%. The rarest one is the os supratrochleare anterius, with only a handful of documented cases in the literature. Despite their scarcity, various types of ossicles have been documented, posing diagnostic challenges and potential misinterpretation on X-rays. Herein, we report a case of an accidentally found os supratrochleare anterius in a 43-year-old pig farmer presenting with symptoms of tennis elbow. After conservative treatment with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and physiotherapy, he made a full recovery within 2 weeks. This report emphasizes the rarity of the ossupra trochleare anterius, the importance of accurate diagnosis, and the need for continued research and awareness of this anatomical variation.

Abstract:Background Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a common complication after elbow fracture surgery and can lead to severe upper extremity disability. The radiographic localization of postoperative HO has been reported previously. However, there is no literature examining the distribution of postoperative HO at the three-dimensional (3D) level. This study aimed to investigate 1) the distribution characteristics of postoperative HO and 2) the possible risk factors affecting the severity of postoperative HO at a 3D level. Methods A retrospective review was conducted of patients who presented to our institution with HO secondary to elbow fracture between 13 January 2020 and 16 February 2023. CT scans of 56 elbows before elbow release surgery were reconstructed in three dimensions (3D). HO was identified using density thresholds combined with manual identification and segmentation. The elbow joint and HO were divided into six regions according to three planes: the transepicondylar plane (TEP), the lateral ridge of the trochlear plane (LTP), and the radiocapitellar joint and coronoid facet plane (RCP). The differences in the volume of regional HO associated with different initial injuries were analyzed. Results Postoperative HO was predominantly present in the medial aspect of the capsule in 52 patients (93%), in the lateral aspect of the capsule in 45 patients (80%), in the medial supracondylar in 32 patients (57%), and in the lateral supracondylar, radial head, and ulnar region in the same number of 28 patients (50%). The median and interquartile range (IQR) volume of total postoperative HO was 1683 (777∼4894) mm 3 . The median and IQR volume of regional postoperative HO were: 584 (121∼1454) mm 3 at medial aspect of capsule, 207 (5∼568) mm 3 at lateral aspect of capsule, 25 (0∼449) mm 3 at medial supracondylar, 1 (0∼288) at lateral supracondylar, 2 (0∼478) at proximal radius and 7 (0∼203) mm 3 at the proximal ulna. In the subgroups with Injury Severity Score (ISS) >or= 16, Gustilo–Anderson II, normal uric acid levels, elevated alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and Body Mass Index (BMI) >or= 24, the median HO volume exceeds that of the respective control groups. Conclusion The medial aspect of the capsule was the area with the highest frequency and median volume of postoperative HO among all initial elbow injury types. Patients with higher Gustilo-Anderson grade, ISS, ALP or BMI had higher median volume of postoperative HO.

Heterotopic Ossification After the Arthroscopic Treatment of Lateral Epicondylitis

Abstract:Background: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a well-known complication following the surgical treatment of fractures and dislocations about the elbow but it is not commonly discussed as a complication following arthroscopy. We present a case of a young athlete who developed HO after the arthroscopic treatment of lateral epicondylitis. Methods: This is a case report chart review of a 24 year old male with lateral epicondylitis. After failing conservative measures, arthroscopic debridement of the extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB) origin ensued. The treatment and patient's final disposition were reported. Results: The patient developed heterotopic ossification of the elbow follow arthroscopic debridement of the ECRB origin. Further surgery was required to excise the heterotopic ossification. Good recovery of motion was achieved. Conclusion: To our knowledge, we present the first case of HO development after elbow arthroscopy for lateral epicondylitis. As the use of elbow arthroscopy continues to grow, there is a need for identification of the risk factors and primary prophylaxis for HO.
A Novel Hemiarthroplasty Design for Treatment of Post-traumatic Elbow Ankylosis and Distal Humerus Nonunion: A Case Report

Abstract:Case: A 26 year old man sustained a blast injury to the right elbow, resulting in chronic distal humerus nonunion and post-traumatic ankylosis. After debridement and flap coverage, a custom distal humerus hemiarthroplasty construct with extramedullary orthogonal plating was used. Satisfaction and functional outcomes were maintained through 6 years of follow-up. Conclusion: This case presents a unique 1-stage surgical solution which demonstrates the potential for uncemented extramedullary hemiarthroplasty fixation with simultaneous compression plate osteosynthesis across a nonunion site. The potential for hemiarthroplasty designs to be linked to orthogonal plates preserves the intramedullary canal for future conversion to total elbow arthroplasty if necessary.

Abstract:This case report presents a rare and intricate pediatric floating elbow fracture involving a Monteggia-equivalent fracture, ipsilateral humeral shaft fracture, and radial nerve injury. The unique mechanism of injury highlights the importance of increased awareness and parental education for accident prevention. Elastic intramedullary nailing was employed for both humeral shaft and forearm fractures, leading to favorable outcomes. Despite the severity of the fractures and radial nerve injury, the prognosis was positive, with nerve function restoration and satisfactory functional recovery. However, the development of avascular necrosis of the radial head remains a challenge, emphasizing the need for further research to better understand and manage these uncommon and complex injuries.

Abstract:Open debridement remains the gold standard for the clinical treatment of post-traumatic elbow stiffness. However, postoperative complications, such as re-contraction and heterotopic ossification of the elbow joint, are highly prevalent. Hinged external fixation appears to offer the potential for greater improvement of joint function and reduction of complications. The purpose of this article is to provide the latest evidence on the effectiveness and safety of hinged external fixation combined with open debridement for the treatment of post-traumatic elbow stiffness.
