Abstract:Museums showcase the cultures and histories of different regions and serve as new tourist attractions in numerous cities. Scholars and practitioners are keen on understanding the factors that influence the museum visit intention of visitors. The current study examined generativity, which refers to one's care and concern for the next generation, and its impact on the museum experience expectation, motivation and visit intention of tourists. A questionnaire survey involving 306 museum visitors in Macau was conducted. Results of structural equation modelling suggested that generativity directly affected experience expectation and visit intention. Moreover, experience expectation had a direct effect on visit intention. Additionally, this study found that experience expectation and motivation were mediating variables between generativity and visit intention. Furthermore, implications and suggestions were provided for tourism providers and museum managers.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to understand the behavioral motives of tourists when visiting museums and the driving forces behind them, especially from the perspective of "Generativity", and to explore how this value affects tourists' expectations of museum experiences, motives and willingness to visit. Specifically, the research analyzed the relationships between generativity and tourists' experience expectations, motives and visit intentions by investigating the data of 306 museum tourists in Macau and using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The study found that generativity not only directly affects tourists' experience expectations and visit intentions, but also indirectly affects visit intentions through the two mediating variables of experience expectations and motives. This research fills the gap in the concept of generativity in tourism behavior research and provides new perspectives and inspirations for the academic community and practitioners.
