Abstract:The nitric oxide adsorption on Ru(1010) and Cs/Ru(1010) surfaces was studied by He II-ARUPS (angle-resolved ultraviolet photoelectron spectrum) at 150K. The results show that the nitric oxide adsorption on Ru(1010) surface is a kind of molecular adsorption, and the nitric oxide adsorption on Cs/Ru (1010) surface would form N2O molecules.

Abstract:The adsorption of NO on the clean and Cs-precovered Ru(10 (1) over bar 0) surfaces has been studied by means of thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS). For NO adsorption on the clean surface, two adsorption states (a(1), a(2)) for the desorption temperatures at 325 degrees C and 550 degrees C were observed. In the case of NO adsorption on the Cs-precovered Ru(10 (1) over bar 0) surface, the existence of Cs resulted in more adsorption sites for at states, and the desorption temperature of this state was also increased. Furthermore, the desorption species such as N-2 and N2O were observed. This implies that part of NO molecules dissociate into N and O adatoms on the surface, and those adsorbed species recombine into N-2 and N2O. This result gives evidence for the promoting effect of alkali-metals.

Abstract:Real-time attenuated total-reflection surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (ATR-SEIRAS), in conjunction to cyclic voltammetry, was applied to investigate the adsorption and reduction of nitric oxide at Ru electrode in acidic solutions. For a NO-predosed Ru electrode, only one band located at 1840–1874 cm−1 was detected in 0.1 M HClO4, attributable to atop NO coadsorbed with oxygen-containing species [designated ν2(O)NO species]. For a Ru electrode in 0.1 M HClO4 containing 20 mM NaNO2, two IR bands were observed at 1850–1886 cm−1 and 1740–1790 cm−1. The former, predominant at relatively high potentials, is ascribable to the ν2(O)NO species; the latter, to atop NO adsorbed on nominal Ru sites at relatively low potentials (designated ν2-NO species). In addition, a very weak band at 1520–1578 cm−1 may be assigned to multicoordinated NO coadsorbed with oxygen-containing species. The real-time spectral results suggest that the reduction of NO molecules and the coadsorbed oxygen-containing species proceed simultaneously rather than separately.

Abstract:Nitric Oxide (NO) is a significant gaseous signalling molecule in various pathological and physiological pathways, whereas many of its functions are still ambiguous in part because of the shortage of powerful detection approaches. Herein, we present a type of reaction-based surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) nanoprobes, o-phenylenediamine-modified gold nanoparticles (AuNPs/OPD), to detect the level of the endogenous NO in living cells. The detection is achieved through the SERS variation of AuNPs/OPD caused by the reaction between NO and OPD on the surface of AuNPs. The proposed SERS nanoprobes have a good stability and a rapid response to NO within 30s Moreover, as a result of the reaction specificity coupled with SERS fingerprinting, AuNPs/OPD nanoprobes demonstrate high selectivity towards NO over other biologically relevant species with a sensitivity at 10−7M level. Thereby, this SERS strategy can be used for monitoring NO that is endogenously produced in living macrophages, indicating immense potential in studying NO-involved pathophysiological processes in biological systems.

Abstract:Here we demonstrate the surface plasmon (SP) induced nitration of aromatic rings by an in situ surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) technique. The size feature of the as-prepared Au, Ag and Ag@PDA@Au hierarchical structures allows monitoring the entire reaction process on a single hierarchical structure. With benzenethiol (BT) and HNO3 as reactants, SP induced aromatic nitration can be successfully realized without the assistance of a conventional acid catalyst, H2SO4. Experimental and theoretical studies confirm that the nitration reaction leads to para-nitrothiophenol (p-NTP). While control experiments show that SP here functions as a local heating source and the presence of metal is also necessary for this nitration reaction. This SP induced aromatic nitration reaction also displays SERS substrate-dependent reaction kinetics, which proceeds more rapidly on the Au surface. Higher laser power can generate a stronger photothermal effect, and thus an accelerated reaction rate for this reaction. We believe this finding may broaden the research areas in the SP assisted or induced catalytic reactions.

Abstract:Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) is a powerful technology that provides abundant chemical fingerprint information with advantages of high sensitivity and time-saving. Advancements in SERS substrates fabrication allow Ag nanorods (AgNRs) possess superior sensitivity, high uniformity, and excellent reproducibility. To further promote AgNRs as a promising SERS substrate candidate to a broader application scope, oxides are integrated with AgNRs by virtue of their unique properties which endow the AgNRs-oxide hybrid with high stability and recyclability. Aside from SERS substrates fabrication, significant developments in quantitative analysis strategies offer enormous approaches to minimize influences resulted from variations of measuring conditions and to provide the reasonable data analysis. In this review, we discuss various fabrication approaches for AgNRs and AgNRs-oxide hybrids to achieve efficient SERS platforms. Then, we introduce three types of strategies which are commonly employed in chemical quantitative analysis to reach a reliable result. Further, we highlight SERS applications including food safety, environment safety, biosensing, and vapor sensing, demonstrating the potential of SERS as a powerful and promising technique. Finally, we conclude with the current challenges and future prospects toward efficient SERS manipulations for broader real-world applications.
Adsorption and Surface Reaction of NO2 on a Stepped Au(997) Surface: Enhanced Reactivity of Low-Coordinated Au Atoms

Abstract:The adsorption and surface reaction of NO2 on a stepped Au(997) surface were investigated by temperature-programmed desorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy. At low NO2 exposures, NO2 chemisorbs molecularly and reversibly on the Au(997) surface at 130 K, but low-coordinated Au atoms on the (111) step sites exhibit enhanced reactivity. NO2(a) chemisorbed on the (111) step sites is thermally more stable than that chemisorbed on the (111) terrace sites. At large NO2 exposures, an amorphous physisorbed N2O4 multilayer forms at 130 K Subsequent heating causes the isomerization of the physisorbed N2O4 multilayer (O2N-NO2) to nitrite-N2O4 (ONO-NO2) and the subsequent transformation of nitrite-N2O4 into nitrosonium nitrate (NO+NO3-) that further decomposes into NO(g) and NO2(g) at elevated temperatures, forming O(a) on the surface. These surface reactions could be utilized to prepare oxygen adatoms on inert Au surfaces under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. Our results broaden the fundamental understanding of the interaction between small molecules and Au surfaces.

Abstract:Rational engineering of highly stable and Raman-active nanostructured substrates is still urgently in demand for achieving sensitive and reliable surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) analysis in solution phase. Herein, monodisperse N-doping graphene quantum dots wrapped Au nanoparticles (Au-NGQD NPs) were facilely prepared, and further their applications as substrates in SERS-based detection and cellular imaging have been explored. The as-prepared Au-NGQD NPs exhibit superior long-term stability and biocompatibility, as well as large enhancement capability due to the integration of electromagnetic and chemical enhancements. The practical applicability of the Au-NGQD NPs was verified via the direct SERS tests of several kinds of aromatics in solution phase. Finite-difference time-domain simulations in combination with density functional theory calculation were also successfully used to explain the enhancement mechanism. Furthermore, the Au-NGQD NPs were conjugated with 4-nitrobenzenethiol (4-NBT, as reporter) and 4-mercaptophenylboronic acid (MPBA, as targeting element) to construct the MPBA/4-NBT@Au-NGQD probes, which could specifically recognize glycan-overexpressed cancer cells through SERS imaging on a cell surface. The prepared Au-NGQDs show great potential as superior SERS substrates in solution phase for on-site Raman detection.
Surface coordination of nitric oxide to a self-assembled monolayer of a triruthenium cluster: an in situ infrared spectroscopic study.

Abstract:Coordination of nitric oxide (NO) to a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of a triruthenium (Ru-3) cluster, [Ru-3(mu(3)-O)(mu-CH3COO)(6)(CO)(L-1)(L-2)](0)(L-1 =[(NC5H4)CH2NHC(O)(CH2)(10)S-](2),L-2=4-methylpyridine), on a gold electrode surface has been studied by electrochemical and in situ infrared (IR) spectroscopic measurements. Ligand substitution reaction of NO for carbon monoxide (CO) ligands in the SAM strongly depends on the oxidation state of the terminal Ru-3 cluster. NO can be introduced into the Ru-3 Cluster in the SAM with a high yield after one-electron oxidation of the Ru-3 core to a oxidation state, while no coordination reaction occurs at the initial oxidation state of the Ru-3 cluster. The kinetics of the NO coordination and desorption processes is also evaluated by time-resolved in situ IR spectroscopy. Finally, we demonstrate that the SAM with NO/CO randomly mixed ligands at a desired ratio can be constructed on the gold surface by tuning a suitable oxidation state of the Ru-3 cluster under electrochemical control.

Abstract:Metal nanoparticles-on-smooth-electrode (NOSE) was used as the substrate in a potential-dependent surface-enhanced hyper-Raman(SEHRS), hyper-Rayleigh(SEHRyS) and Raman (SERS) study of adsorbed molecules of pyridine, pyrazine and benzene. The three molecules are chosen because they are known to adsorb in different orientations on an Ag surface, thus allowing us to examine the sensitivity of SEHRS and SERS signals to the orientation of adsorbed molecules on the NOSE substrate. A computational subroutine is developed and interfaced with Gaussian-98 to calculate the numeric infrared, Raman and hyper-Raman intensities, as well as their projections along any molecular-fixed orientation axis at the level of finite perturbation theory. In this study, we tried to make four types of systematic comparisons. First, we compared the performance of Ag(n)vertical bar Ag NOSE substrate with that of traditional substrates such as a randomly roughened Ag electrode or a randomly aggregated Ag sol in SEHRS and SERS. Secondly, we tried to compare between infrared, Raman and hyper-Raman spectra, which represent the parity-differentiated one-photon, two-photon and three-photon processes, respectively, with the aim of examining the complementarity between SEHRS and SERS as well as between SEHRS and infrared absorption. Thirdly, we compared isotropic normal spectra with surface-enhanced spectra (SEHRS and SERS), with the aim of examining the effect of surface adsorption on the selectivity and enhancement. Lastly, we made a systematic comparison between the observed and calculated spectra for both isotropic and surface spectra, which allowed us to assign and interpret the observed data and to infer the most likely orientation of the adsorbed molecules. The NOSE method can be generalized easily to other metal nanoparticles dispersed on a smooth inert metal electrode. The rapid development in the synthesis of metal nanoparticles of various sizes, shapes and crystalline states makes the NOSE method a much more flexible and versatile substrate in the study and applications of SERS and SEHRS techniques. Design of sensitive materials for nitrogen oxides detection

Abstract:Although the d-band center theory can well describe the interaction between gas molecules and transition metal surfaces, the detailed reaction process and specific adsorption conditions are unclear. Hence, in this work, we systematically studied the adsorption mechanism, adsorption conditions, and recovery time of NO and NO2 molecules on different transition metals (Cu, Ag, Au, Ni, Pd, Pt, Rh, Ru, Tc, Mo, Nb, and Zr) surfaces by first-principles. The results indicated that the charge transfers from the dz2, dxz, and dyz orbitals of substrate atoms to the HOMOs/LUMOs of NO and NO2. Moreover, we demonstrate that the interaction orbitals between the NO/NO2 and the metal atoms excellently correspond with the match of energy level and parity, and the maximum overlap of the orbital wave function. Interestingly, the excellent linear scaling between charge transfer and the d-band center, work function, and matrix element (V2ad) of metals has been confirmed. Specifically, the different recovery times of these systems at different temperatures were explored. Our results can provide a feasible way for exploring gas-sensitive materials in the experiments.

Abstract:Abstract Dual-functionality Au-on-Ag nanostructures (AOA) were fabricated on a silicon substrate by first immobilizing citrate-reduced Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs, ∼43 nm in diameter), followed by depositing ∼7 nm Au nanofilms (Au NFs) via thermal evaporation. Au NFs were introduced for their catalytic activity in concave-convex nano-configuration. Ag NPs underneath were used for their significant enhancement factor (EF) in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-based measurements of analytes of interest. Rhodamine 6G (R6G) was utilized as the Raman-probe to evaluate the SERS sensitivity of AOA. The SERS EF of AOA is ∼37 times than that of Au NPs. Using reduction of 4-nitrothiophenol (4-NTP) by sodium borohydride (NaBH 4 ) as a model reaction, we demonstrated the robust catalytic activity of AOA as well as its capacity to continuously monitor via SERS the disappearance of reactant 4-NTP, emergence and disappearance of intermediate 4,4′-DMAB, and the appearance of product 4-ATP throughout the reduction process in real-time and in situ .

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has gained recognition as a potential vibrational spectroscopy technique due to its distinctive fingerprint characteristics, non-invasive nature, high sensitivity, and quick detection response. Following the initial observation of enhanced Raman signals from a pyridine molecule adsorbed on a rough Ag electrode in the 1970 s, a variety of substrates with enhanced capabilities have been explored for diverse applications. In recent times, a range of noble-free SERS substrates has been developed for broad analytical applications owing to their improved activity, inherent chemical stability, and high specificity for target molecules. This review comprehensively examines recent advances in noble-free SERS substrates, primarily focusing on main categories, fabrication strategies, basic enhancement mechanisms, corresponding SERS performance, and representative applications. Firstly, the review illustrates the fundamental working principles of SERS, including electromagnetic (EM) and chemical (CM) enhancements. Subsequently, a detailed overview of the general categories of noble-free SERS substrates is presented. These include carbon-based materials, metal oxides, transition metal dichalcogenides, transition metal nitrides/carbides, polymers, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), MXene, Si, heterojunctions, and other noble-free SERS substrates. Next, a brief view of their typical applications in bio-analysis, bioimaging, and small molecule analysis is outlined. In the end, this review addresses the challenges and discusses perspectives, including improvement in SERS enhancement, the unification of enhancement mechanisms, and the expansion of applications. The challenges and potential avenues for future research and development are thoroughly discussed and proposed.

MOF-derived AuNS/LDH with high adsorption ability for surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy detection

Abstract:The sensitivity of surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) depends on the construction of "hot spots" and the number of analyte molecules adsorbed onto the substrates. Herein, we have constructed a kind of SERS substrate based on gold nanostars (Au NSs) coated with nickel-cobalt layered double hydroxide (LDH) using a zeolitic imidazolate skeleton as sacrificial template via nickel ions etching. LDH was used as the absorption medium for target molecules, and concurrently prevented Au NSs from agglomeration to improve stability and uniformity of the substrate. Meanwhile, encapsulated Au NSs were used as the enhancement medium for Raman detection. The porous LDH shell around the Au NSs promoted the target molecules to approach the Au NSs, which was certified by the experimental results of UV-Vis absorption and simulation analysis using the density functional theory. The detection of Rhodamine 6G solution with a concentration of 10-9 M was realized by the AuNS/LDH, and the relative standard deviation of Raman signals was less than 10%. Therefore, this work provides a new idea and a suitable structure to improve SERS signal intensity by introducing adsorption medium into the SERS substrate.
A First-Principles Study of NO Adsorption and Oxidation on Au(111) Surface

Abstract:Density functional theory and slab models are employed to study NO molecule adsorption and reaction on clean and atomic oxygen precovered Au(111) surfaces. While clean Au(111) surface is catalytically inert and can only weakly adsorb NO, an atomic oxygen precovered Au(111) surface is found to be very active to NO. On the clean surface, NO prefers to bond at the onefold on-top surface site with a tilted geometry. On 0.33 ML (monolayer) oxygen precovered surface NO reacts with chemisorbed oxygen to form chemisorbed NO2 by conquering a small energy barrier about 0.18 eV, and the desorption energy of NO2 is 0.64 eV. On 1.0 ML oxygen coverage surface, no barrier is found while NO reacts with precovered oxygen. The desorption energy of NO2 is 0.03 eV. The desorption of NO2 is the rate determining step on both surfaces and the overall reaction barriers are 0.64 and 0.03 eV, respectively. The activation energies depend on the initial coverage of oxygen, which compare favorably with experiments on Au surface with different oxygen coverages.

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has outstanding merits in biochemical molecular analysis, and the development of new SERS substrates is the focus of research. Herein, In 2 O 3 nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized by a high temperature pyrolysis method with cubic phase and small particle size at 10 nm. The structures and properties of In 2 O 3 NPs were characterized by X–ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and other characterization methods. Additionally, the SERS spectra of In 2 O 3 -MBA with the enhancement factor ( EF ) up to 1.22 × 10 4 is discussed. The results demonstrate that there is a charge transfer (CT) effect revealed between the adsorbed molecules of 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) and the substrates of In 2 O 3 NPs, and it could be excited by long wavelength energy. Based on the In 2 O 3 NPs, the study is beneficial to develop more potential semiconductor SERS substrates.

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy（SERS）, a powerful surface vibrational spectroscopic technique, is ideally suited for in situ monitoring the chemical transformations occurred at surfaces and/or interfaces.For in situ SERS monitoring, a platform integrated both plasmonic and catalytic activity is a prerequisite. Here, we fabricate a bifunctional Au-Pd nanocoronal film for in situ SERS monitoring Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction. This excellent bifunctional substrate leads to the coupling of high catalytic activity with a strong SERS effect at the center of two adjacent Au cores and shows fine reproducibility and stability of SERS signals. During investigating the Suzuki reaction with in situ SERS, we found two distinct catalytic kinetic processes resulted from two disparate catalytic sites on a Au-Pd nanocoronal. Comparing with conventional analytical techniques, this work provides a novel approach for studying Suzuki reactions at surfaces and/or interfaces with in situ SERS.
Near-Infrared Excited Surface-Enhanced Raman-Scattering on Hno3 Etched Metals by Using Fourier-Transform Technique

Abstract:Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has been produced on HNO3 roughened silver and copper foils using near infrared excited Fourier transform (FT) Raman spectroscopy. The FT-SERS spectra obtained from 4-aminophenyl disulfide reveal the S-S bond fission of the molecule upon adsorption both on Ag and Cu surfaces. The spectra of acrylamide on Ag indicate that a relatively complete polymerization has occurred on Ag. The SERS technique on such metal substrates, in combination with FT instrumentation, shows fair simplicity, high sensitivity and great promise as a general analytical tool for surface reaction studies.

Abstract:A simple chemical method for preparing SERS active surface was developed by etching sliver foils in concentrated HNO3 solutions. The enhancement factors were calculated to be 10(8) as compared with solution spectra. The technique was applied to investigate the self-assembly of benzyl disulfide and adsorption orientation of thiophenol on silver surfaces. The results show that the HNO3 roughened silver foil seems to be a more routinely preparable substrate system for SERS study.
