Abstract:The predicted lower energy structures of neutral carbon cluster C-10 are presented by using the particle swarm optimization method in combination with quantum chemistry calculation. Our results describe a wonderful diversity of C-10 configuration with the DFT and MP2 methods. For linear and cyclic clusters, the energy of most stable monocyclic structure with D-5h symmetry is lower by 1.38 kcal/mol than the transition isomers with D-10h symmetry at CCSD(T)/cc-pVTZ level, which is consistent with the previous theoretical results by others. All linear structures of C-10 cluster have been certified as the metastable states at different calculation methods in this work. Simulated infrared spectra reveals that the extensive electron localization exists in the D-10h configuration leading to the decreasing of the number of vibration modes compared with D-5h, configuration. The nucleus independent chemical shift (NICS) calculations indicate that planar C-10 system is a stable aromatic compound and the position used to calculate the aromatic indices can be affected by the most shielding or deshielded location that we employed. The contribution of the delocalized electrons to the pi-aromaticity is identical in C1(a) and C1(b). By the adaptive natural density partitioning (AdNDP) and canonical molecular orbital (CMO) analysis, we know that the highly symmetric structures have more energy degenerate CMOs and 2 center-2 electron bond connection, and monocyclic C-10 cluster is a globally doubly (sigma- and pi-) aromatic compound. Topological analysis and natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis show that there isn't any electrostatic type of interactions in C-10 structures, and much of negative natural valence electron configuration comes from high angular momentum orbitals. According to the electron configurations, the natural hybrid orbital is mainly composed of sp hybrid in the systems. It is worth mentioning that the competition of complicated many body effects plays a significant role in stabilizing the distorted configuration of C-10 cluster. A Possible Superhard Orthorhombic Carbon

Abstract:Carbon is a versatile element in the periodic table because of its ability to form various stable and metastable allotropes. In the present work, an orthorhombic carbon allotrope with ‘4-membered rectangles’ is predicated by Particle Swarm Optimization method at 0GPa. Calculations indicate that this new phase is dynamically and mechanically stable although it has a high enthalpy. Its electronic and mechanical properties such as elastic constants, hardness, ideal tensile strength and shear strength are systematically studied. The results show that it is an indirect band gap crystal with a gap of 2.68eV; in spite of its elastic anisotropy, the theoretical hardness of 76.2GPa still makes it a potential superhard material; the obtained ideal tensile strength and shear strength are 69.0GPa and 75.6GPa, respectively, confirming its superhard character. The related microscopic deformation mechanisms are also detailedly analyzed through investigating the corresponding charge density, which reveals that the bonds arranged parallel to the b-axis are responsible for the breakdown of the crystal under the critical tension and shear deformations. These studies provide important information for the potential applications of the crystal once it is synthesized.
Chemistry of Cyclo-[2n]-Carbon: A Many-Particle Quantum Mechanics Investigation

Abstract:Direct observations of cyclo-[2n]-carbon molecules (C10, C14, C16 and C18) experimentally prepared by atom manipulation technique raised immense attraction in the general chemistry society. The cyclic π-conjugated systems, namely in-plane and out-plane, construct dual aromaticity for odd n while dual anti-aromaticity for even n. In this work, we performed electronic structure investigation into cyclo-[2n]-carbon with n = 3 ~ 9 by comparing results obtained by density functional theory (DFT) and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. By using Huckel molecular orbital (HMO) theory and the particle in a ring model, the electronic feature of such innovative carbon allotrope was clearly and chemically presented. Comparison showed that DFT results are considered to be incorrect for C6, which has a unique bonding structure among all cyclo-[2n]-carbon. The bond length alternating (BLA) phenomenon results from difference in electron correlation intensity and spatial distribution observed in pairs of bonding and anti-bonding orbitals. Therefore, results suggested that the dual anti-aromaticity in cyclo-[2n]-carbon with even n should be attributed to electron correlation effect, instead of decreased geometric symmetry, which actually exists in all cyclo-[2n]-carbon molecules and does not point out the essence.

Abstract:Carbon allotropes built from rings of two-coordinate atoms, known as cyclo[ n ]carbons, have fascinated chemists for many years, but until now they could not be isolated or structurally characterized because of their high reactivity. We generated cyclo[18]carbon (C 18 ) using atom manipulation on bilayer NaCl on Cu(111) at 5 kelvin by eliminating carbon monoxide from a cyclocarbon oxide molecule, C 24 O 6 . Characterization of cyclo[18]carbon by high-resolution atomic force microscopy revealed a polyynic structure with defined positions of alternating triple and single bonds. The high reactivity of cyclocarbon and cyclocarbon oxides allows covalent coupling between molecules to be induced by atom manipulation, opening an avenue for the synthesis of other carbon allotropes and carbon-rich materials from the coalescence of cyclocarbon molecules.

Abstract:A ring-shaped carbon allotrope was recently synthesized for the first time, reinvigorating theoretical interest in this class of molecules. The dual $\pi$ structure of these molecules allows for the possibility of novel electronic properties. In this work we use reduced density matrix theory to study the electronic structure and conductivity of cyclo[18]carbon and its boron nitride analogue, B\textsubscript{9}N\textsubscript{9}. The variational 2RDM method replicates the experimental polyynic geometry of cyclo[18]carbon. We use a current-constrained 1-electron reduced density matrix (1-RDM) theory with Hartree-Fock molecular orbitals and energies to compute the molecular conductance in two cases: (1) conductance in the plane of the molecule and (2) conductance around the molecular ring as potentially driven by a magnetic field through the molecule's center. In-plane conductance is greater than conductance around the ring, but cyclo[18]carbon is slightly more conductive than B\textsubscript{9}N\textsubscript{9} for both in-the-plane and in-the-ring conduction. The computed conductance per molecular orbital provides insight into how the orbitals---their energies and densities---drive the conduction.

Abstract:Cyclo[N]carbons (CN) are molecular rings of N carbon atoms. These exotic carbon allotropes are excellent benchmarking systems for testing quantum chemical theoretical methods, and they may be valuable precursors to other carbon-rich materials. Odd-N cyclocarbons, elusive to date, are predicted to be even less stable than even-N ones, and their structures are unknown. Here we report the on-surface synthesis of cyclo[13]carbon, C13. We elucidate its properties by scanning probe microscopy and theoretical modelling. C13 adopts an open-shell configuration with a triplet ground state and a kinked geometry, which shows different degrees of pronunciation related to different degrees of carbene localization. Moreover, we prepare and characterize the C13 dimer, yielding cyclo[26]carbon, demonstrating the potential of cyclocarbons as precursors to novel carbon allotropes.

Abstract:The unparalleled geometric and electronic structures along with the fascinating properties of cyclo[18]carbon, a new member in the carbon allotrope family, is found to be a riveting molecule. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were accomplished to probe the structure, stability and properties of sandwich structures of 3d-transition series metal atoms with C18 rings. Results reveal that among all the 3d-transition metal atoms only the Zn atom forms a stable super sandwich-like structure with C18 (i.e., C18-Zn-C18). Ab initio molecular dynamic simulation was carried out to attain the comprehensive understanding of the stability of the C18-Zn-C18 complex. Result indicates that the non-covalent interaction plays a vital role in stabilizing the C18-Zn-C18 super sandwich complex which is further supported by atoms in molecules and extended transition state-natural orbital for chemical valence analysis. The Kohn–Sham band structure and density of state calculations were performed to investigate the periodic tube-like structures obtained using C18 and Zn. The calculated band gap using HSE06 in conjunction with TZP of Zn@C18 is found to be 0.49 eV.

Designing a sp3 structure of carbon T-C9: First-principles calculations

Abstract:A novel superhard carbon allotrope T-C9 with an all-sp 3 bonding network is theoretically predicted in this work. The new phase of the carbon allotrope has tetragonal symmetry with space group P-4m2, and the structural properties, stability, mechanical anisotropy, mechanical and electronic properties of T-C9 are systematically investigated utilizing density functional theory. T-C9 is mechanically and dynamically stable, and T-C9 is favorable in energy which is lower than T carbon by 0.459 eV/atom at zero pressure. The bulk modulus and shear modulus of T-C9 are calculated to be 328 GPa and 243 GPa, respectively, which are slightly larger than those of T-C5, mC12 and tP40 carbon. The brittleness and superhardness of T-C9 are confirmed by the values of B/G (1.35) and the hardness (66.7 GPa), respectively. In addition, the ratio of the maximum and minimum Young's modulus reveals that T-C9 exhibits anisotropy, especially in the (110) and (111) directions. Electronic properties indicate that T-C9 can be considered to be semiconductor material with a wide indirect band gap of 4.128 eV.

Atomic-resolution Structures from Polycrystalline Covalent Organic Frameworks with Enhanced Cryo-Cred

Abstract:The pursuit of atomic precision structure of porous covalent organic frameworks (COFs) is the key to understanding the relationship between structures and properties, and further developing new materials with superior performance. Yet, a challenge of how to determine their atomic structures has always existed since the first COFs reported seventeen years ago. Here, we present a universal method for ab initio structure determination of polycrystalline three-dimensional (3D) COFs at atomic level using enhanced cryo-continuous rotation electron diffraction (cryo-cRED), which combines hierarchical cluster analysis with cryo-EM technique. The high-quality datasets possess not only up to 0.79-angstrom resolution but more than 90% completeness, leading to unambiguous solution and precise refinement with anisotropic temperature factors. With such a powerful method, the dynamic structures with flexible linkers, degree of interpenetration, position of functional groups, and arrangement of ordered guest molecules are successfully revealed with atomic precision in five 3D COFs, which are almost impossible to be obtained without atomic resolution structure solution. This study demonstrates a practicable strategy for determining the structures of polycrystalline COFs and other beam-sensitive materials and to help in the future discovery of novel materials on the other.

Abstract:Small fullerenes Cn (n < 60) can provide clues for the formation mechanism of common fullerenes. However, it is difficult to synthesize and separate the small fullerenes because they violate the Isolated Pentagon Rule. Encapsulation of transition metal (TM) atoms can stabilize the unstable small fullerenes, regulate the physicochemical properties of core-shell clusters, and bring about catalytic and magnetic effects. Herein, the structures, stability, electronic and magnetic properties of n were studied by density functional theory. The results showed that the embedded clathrate compounds that can be stabilized by TM atoms include 24, 28, 28, 28 and 28. The d orbital of TM atoms in n resonates with the s and p orbits near the Fermi level. 20 has the largest magnetic moment, and the magnetic moments of some structures are 0. For cyclocarbon small fullerene C24, a new tubular strucuture can be formed by end-to-end coalescence. Through polymerization, the stability of C24 is improved significantly. The C24-5 polymer embedded with iodine chain has similar electronic properties with the single-walled carbon nanotube (6,0) with a similar diameter, which provides a new polymerization method for the stabilization of cyclofullerenes similar to C24.

Abstract:Herein, the in‐depth exploration on new carbon allotrope: cyclo[18]carbon through theoretical and experimental investigation is provided. The distinctive cyclic ring current and double aromatic character result in various exceptional properties owing to the various applications such as catalysis, sensing, optoelectronics and many more is also summarized. This work also provides the groundwork for the design and exploration of next‐generation carbon‐based nanodevices. Carbon‐based allotropes are propelling a technological revolution in communication, sensing, and computing, concurrently challenging fundamental theories of the previous century. Nevertheless, the demand for advanced carbon‐based materials remains substantial. The crux lies in the efficient and reliable engineering of novel carbon allotrope. Although C18 has undergone theoretical and experimental investigation for an extended period, its preparation and direct observation in the condensed phase occurred only recently through STM/AFM techniques. The distinctive cyclic ring structure and the dual 18‐center π delocalization character introduce various uncommon properties to C18, rendering it a subject worthy of in‐depth exploration. In this context, this review delves into past developments contributing to the state‐of‐the‐art understanding of C18 and provides insights into how future endeavours can expedite practical applications. Encompassing a broad spectrum, this review comprehensively investigates almost all facets of C18, including geometric characteristics, electron delocalization, bonding nature, aromaticity, reactivity, electronic excitation, UV/Vis spectrum, intermolecular interaction, response to external fields, electron affinity, ionization, and other molecular properties. Moreover, the review also outlines representative strategies for the direct synthesis and characterization of C18 using atom manipulation techniques. Following this, C18‐based complexes are summarized, and potential applications in catalysis, electrochemical devices, optoelectronics, and sensing are discussed.

Abstract:Constructing two-dimensional (2D) polymers with complex tessellation patterns via synthetic chemistry makes a significant contribution not only to the understanding of the emergence of complex hierarchical systems in living organisms, but also to the fabrication of advanced hierarchical materials. However, to achieve such tasks is a great challenge. In this communication we report a facile and general approach to tessellate 2D covalent organic frameworks (COFs) by three or four geometric shapes/sizes, which affords 2D COFs bearing three or four different kinds of pores and increases structural complexity in tessellations of 2D polymers to a much higher level. The complex tessellation patterns of the COFs are elucidated by powder X-ray diffraction studies, theoretical simulations and high-resolution TEM.
Exotic Cubic Carbon Allotropes

Abstract:Elemental carbon exists in various aesthetically pleasing architectures. These forms include a group of synthesized allotropes with cubic modifications that have taken controversial or even unidentified crystal structures, which makes determining their physical properties difficult. In this study, four novel cubic carbon polymorphs (fcc-C-10, fcc-C-12, bcc-C-20, and fcc-C-32) that exhibit lattice parameters within the lame range as those of undetermined cubic carbon allotropes are proposed by employing a newly developed ab initio particle-swarm optimization methodology for crystal structure prediction. The four structures are all three-dimensional polymers consisting of unique, small C-10, C-12, C-20, and C-32 cages with quite low density. Investigation of their electronic and mechanical properties illustrate that the cage like cubic carbons are all semiconductors with excellent mechanical performance, specifically superhardness and high ductility. Moreover, we readily explain a long-standing controversial experimentally synthesized cubic carbon (viz., the so-called "superdense" carbon) using the previously proposed bcc C-6 based on the coincident lattice constant and electron diffraction data between the theoretical and experimental results.
T-Carbon: A Novel Carbon Allotrope

Abstract:A structurally stable crystalline carbon allotrope is predicted by means of the first-principles calculations. This allotrope can be derived by substituting each atom in diamond with a carbon tetrahedron, and possesses the same space group Fd^1 3m as diamond, which is thus coined as T- carbon. The calculations on geometrical, vibrational and electronic properties reveal that T-carbon, with a considerable structural stability and a much lower density 1.50 g/cm3, is a semiconductor with a direct band gap about 3.0 eV, and has a Vickers hardness 61.1 GPa lower than diamond but comparable with cubic boron nitride. Such a form of carbon, once obtained, would have wide applications in photocatalysis, adsoption, hydrogen storage and aerospace materials.
Ultra-hard hexagonal C$_{12}$ with C3 cyclopropane-like moiety from first principles

Abstract:A novel carbon allotrope, hexagonal C12, is proposed from crystal chemistry and quantum density functional theory DFT calculations of ground state and physical properties. The structure exhibits corner sharing distorted tetrahedra with the presence of C3 triangular cyclopropane-like moiety connecting planar carbon. C12 allotrope is found cohesive and stable both mechanically (elastic constants and their combinations) and dynamically -- phonons band structures -- and presents ultra-hardness with Vickers number of 70 GPa. The temperature dependence of the heat capacity CV shows close magnitudes to experimental results of diamond. The electronic band structure reveals closely insulating behavior with 2.5 eV band gap, half smaller than in diamond.

Abstract:Compared with traditional structure prediction methods, the purposeful bottom-up approach is better able to obtain structures with specified performance. In this study, we established two novel carbon phases in purely sp2-bonded networks, termed H61-carbon and H62-carbon, using a self-assembling approach. These carbyne-connected carbon allotropes had helix chains joined by cumulative double-bond chains. We certified the new carbon allotropes to be dynamically and mechanically stable. Both of these carbon allotropes exhibited excellent mechanical properties, and they had metallic and superconductive characteristics featuring superconducting transition temperatures of 10 K (H61-carbon) and 7.4 K (H62-carbon), respectively. These results provide an important strategy for the design of novel carbon allotropes with specified properties.

Abstract:Through first-principles calculations, we employed anisotropic compression to T-carbon and identified several carbon allotropes. Among them, we predict a novel body-centered tetragonal carbon allotrope with space group I4(1)/amd (No. 141), in which sixteen carbon atoms comprise four-and five-and eight-membered rings within a unit cell; we name it as bct-C-16-II. Phonon spectrum calculations exhibit that it is dynamically stable under pressure up to at least 100 GPa. This bct-C-16-II is energetically more stable than T-carbon and the previously proposed bct-C-16-I, although it has higher energy than graphite or diamond. Our calculations also show that bct-C-16-II may be super-hard with Vickers hardness around 55 GPa, comparable to cubic boron nitride. Its ideal tensile and shear strength is calculated to be around 75 and 43 GPa, respectively. We simulated the trans-formation pathway of importance from T-carbon to this novel bct-C-16-II phase. The energy barrier is estimated to be around 0.187 eV/atom, which provides a possible approach to synthesize it. The achievement of other carbon allotropes indicates that the tetrahedral units in T-carbon are not very strong under anisotropic strains that T-carbon might be considered as a good precursor to synthesize other carbon materials. The discovery of this new phase may enrich our knowledge of carbon materials and their formation mechanisms.
From layered 2D carbon to 3D tetrahedral original allotropes C12 and C18 with physical properties related to diamond: Crystal chemistry and DFT investigations

Abstract:Two mechanisms of changes from 2D to 3D (D = dimensionality) involving 2D C(sp2) trigonal paving to C(sp3) tetrahedral stacking are proposed through puckering of the 2D layers on one hand and interlayer insertion of extra C on the other hand. Such transformations, led to original 3D hexagonal C12 and C18 allotropes respectively characterized by lon and bac topologies. Using density functional theory DFT calculations, the two allotropes were found cohesive and stable both mechanically (elastic properties) and dynamically (phonons). Comparisons of the physical properties with known uni C6 were established letting identify ranges of large Vickers hardness: HV (uni C6) = 89 GPa, HV (lon C12) = 97 GPa, and HV (bac C18) = 70 GPa. Whilst C6 was identified with acoustic phonons instability, C12 and C18 were found stable dynamically throughout the acoustic and optic frequency ranges. Furthering on the thermal properties the allotropes were characterized with a temperature dependence curve of the specific heat CV close to experimental data of diamond with best fit for novel C18. The electronic band structures reveal a small band gap of 1 eV for uni C6 and larger direct band gap of 3 eV for the two other 3D allotropes. Such modulations of the electronic and physical properties should open scopes of carbon research.
