Abstract:The research on the structure of advanced electrode materials is significant in the field of supercapacitors. Herein, for the first time, we propose a novel 3D/3D composite structure by a multi-step process, in which 3D hollow NiCo LDH nanocages are immobilized on 3D sea urchin-like CoO microspheres. Results show that the 3D CoO acts as an efficient and stable channel for ion diffusion, while the hollow NiCo LDH pro -vides abundant redox-active sites. The calculated results based on density function theory (DFT) show that the CoO@NiCo LDH heterostructure has an enhanced density of states (DOS) near the Fermi level and strong adsorption capacity for OH-, indicating its excellent electrical conductivity and electrochem-ical reaction kinetics. As a result, the CoO@NiCo LDH electrode has an areal specific capacity of 4.71C cm-2 at a current density of 3 mA cm-2 (440.19C g-1 at 0.28 A g-1) and can still maintain 88.76 % of the initial capacitance after 5000 cycles. In addition, the assembled hybrid supercapacitor has an energy density of 5.59 mWh cm-3 at 39.54 mW cm-3.(c) 2022 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Nanorods-composed yolk-shell bimetallic-organic frameworks microspheres are successfully synthesized by a one-step solvothermal method in the absence of any template or surfactant. Furthermore, hierarchical double-shelled NiO/ZnO hollow spheres are obtained by calcination of the bimetallic organic frameworks in air. The NiO/ZnO hollow spheres, as supercapacitor electrodes, exhibit high capacitance of 497 F g(-1) at the current density of 1.3 A g(-1) and present a superior cycling stability. The superior electrochemical performance is believed to come from the unique double-shelled NiO/ZnO hollow structures, which offer free space to accommodate the volume change during the ion insertion and desertion processes, as well as provide rich electroactive sites for the electrochemical reactions.
Microporous tungsten oxide spheres coupled with Ti3C2Txnanosheets for high-volumetric capacitance supercapacitors

Abstract:In the contemporary landscape of technological advancements, the burgeoning demand for portable electronics and flexible wearable devices has necessitated the development of energy storage systems with superior volumetric performance. Tungsten oxide (WO3), known for its high density and theoretical capacitance, is a promising electrode material for supercapacitors. However, low conductivity and poor cycling stability are still the key bottlenecks for its application. Herein, a novel composite comprising hollow porous WO3 spheres (HPWS) derived by template method was electrostatic self-assembled on the surface of the Ti3C2Tx nanosheets. The resulting electrodes exhibited ultra-high volumetric capacitance of 1930 F cm-3 at 1 A g-1 and rate capability of 46% at 50 A g-1, attributed to enhanced ion accessibility from microporous structure and electron transport from conductive network of Ti3C2Tx even at a high packing density of 3.86 g cm-3. Utilizing HPWS/Ti3C2Tx as the negative electrode and porous carbon as the positive electrode, the assembled asymmetric supercapacitor achieved an energy density of 31 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 650 W kg-1 with over 107% capacitance retention after 5000 cycles. This work provides a promising approach for developing next-generation supercapacitors with ultra-high volumetric capacitance.

Abstract:In this work, N-doped TiO2 hierarchical microspheres were prepared by a hydrothermal process for high performance supercapacitor. This structured microsphere can provide a large specific surface area and a suitable pore size, which is conducive to electrolyte infiltration, and the nitrogen doping can improve the electrical properties of intrinsic TiO2. Combining these two strategies, the specific capacitance of N-doped TiO2 microspheres increases from 2.26 to 11.89 mF/cm2 at current density of 1 mA/cm2 and the capacitance remains 90.5% of the original capacity after 10,000 cycles.

Abstract:Fe 2 O 3 microspheres with a unique structure were reported for the first time in this article and showed excellent cycling stability as a negative electrode for supercapacitors. A high areal specific capacitance of 1465.26 mF cm −2 was also achieved in sulfur-doped Fe 2 O 3 . An asymmetric supercapacitor was assembled demonstrating its potential for practical use.

Abstract:Nickel cobalt sulfide hollow micro-/nanostructures have received extensive attention as potential electrode materials for electrochemical energy storage due to its attractive structure, reach chemistry and excellent conductivity. Compare to ordinary hollow materials, multi-shelled hollow structures apparently have more advantages in specific surface area, energy density and structure stability. Herein, we successfully prepared multi-shelled NiCo2S4 hollow microspheres and pioneered its application in supercapacitors. The multi-shelled NiCo2S4 hollow microspheres show high specific capacity of 1521.3 F g−1 at a current density of 0.5 A g−1. The asymmetric supercapacitor with a positive electrode of multi-shelled NiCo2S4 hollow microspheres and a negative electrode of active carbon reveals excellent energy density of 58.18 Wh kg−1 at the power density of 400.03 W kg−1, and only 14.51% energy density fade after 5000 cycles. Such striking electrochemical performances make the multi-shelled NiCo2S4 hollow microspheres promising for high performance supercapacitors.

Abstract:Cobalt vanadates and their composites have drawn tremendous attention because of their outstanding cycling stability. Rational design of 3D micro/nano-structures using a facile strategy has a promising potential for supercapacitor applications. Herein, we propose a 3D porous Co2V2O7-3 center dot 3H(2)O microflowers electrode as a cathode for pseudocapacitor via a simple co-precipitation technology. The resultant Co2V2O7-3 center dot 3H(2)O with microflowers structure exhibits a high specific capacitance of 351 F g(-1) at a current density of 1 A g(-1), and an ultralong cycle lifetime with 103% capacitance retention after 30,000 cycles. An asymmetric supercapacitor device is also successfully assembled consisting of Co2V2O7-3 center dot 3H(2)O cathode and rGO anode. The optimized ACS device with a potential window of 0-1.5 V delivers a high energy density and an excellent cycle lifetime. These superior electrochemical properties will render the 3D porous Co2V2O7-3 center dot 3H(2)O microflowers material as an attractive material for promising application in energy storage systems.

Abstract:Multi-element transition-metal oxides have attracted much attention in the field of energy storage due to their excellent specific capacitance and multiplicity. Herein, Ni 0.5 Mn 0.5 Co 2 O 4 hollow electrode materials were prepared by a novel solvothermal method using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a soft template, followed by a subsequent annealing treatment. The materials were characterized by XRD, XPS, SEM, TEM, and BET, and their supercapacitor properties were tested on an electrochemical workstation. The unique hollow structure of Ni 0.5 Mn 0.5 Co 2 O 4 can act as a "charge reservoir" for exposing more active sites and increases its specific surface area to 74.67 m 2 ·g −1 . In the three-electrode system, the electrode material of Ni 0.5 Mn 0.5 Co 2 O 4 exhibits a high specific capacitance (2952.5 F·g −1 at 1 A·g −1 and 540 F·g −1 at 15 A·g −1 ). Meanwhile, the electrode material still possesses 80.8% of the original capacitance after 3000 cycles at a current density of 15 A·g −1 , demonstrating good cycling stability. Finally, the electrode material was assembled with activated carbon to form an asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC). The electrochemical performance of the ASC device tested in the two-electrode system exhibited an energy density of 118.2 Wh·kg −1 when the power density was 1428 W·kg −1 . In addition, the ASC device could light up a small light bulb. The redox reaction kinetics was controlled by both diffusion and capacitive behaviors. With increasing scanning rate, the capacitive contribution gradually dominated the kinetics. The electrode material of Ni 0.5 Mn 0.5 Co 2 O 4 offers possibilities for actual applications in the future.

Abstract:3D hierarchical carbon-based nanostructures not only create hierarchical porous channels, but also possess high electrical conductivity and maintain excellent structural mechanical stability for high-performance supercapacitors. In this research, hierarchical porous N-doped carbon and Co3O4 nanopillar arrays derived from Morpho butterfly wing scales have been explored. These structures have demonstrated enhanced capacitance, with a maximum specific capacity of 978.9Fg−1 at 0.5Ag−1, and good cycling stability, retaining about 94.5% of their capacitance after 2000 cycles as well as improving supercapacitor energy density without sacrificing power density. The maximum energy density of the carbonized wing scale-cobalt oxide (CWs-Co3O4) composite supercapacitors was found to be 99.11Whkg−1. This paper proposes a method for building 3D hierarchical N-doped carbon materials with various morphologies. It also presents a concept and method for designing a carbon-based 3D binder-free electrode with a hierarchical structure. This research provides a vast structural pool for developing novel electrochemical properties based on these materials.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) fennel-like cobalt oxide (II, III) (Co3O4) particles with thirty-six surfaces on nickel foams were prepared via a simple hydrothermal synthesis method and its growth process was also researched. The crystalline structure and morphology were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Raman spectroscopy. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis revealed that 3D fennel-like Co3O4 particles have high specific surface area. Therefore, the special structure with thirty-six surfaces indicates the good electrochemical performance of the micron-nanometer material as electrode material for supercapacitors. The cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge-discharge, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were conducted to evaluate the electrochemical performances. Compared with other morphological materials of the similar sizes, the Co3O4 particles on nickel foam exhibit a high specific capacitance of 384.375 F·g−1 at the current density of 3 A·g−1 and excellent cycling stability of a capacitance retention of 96.54% after 1500 galvanostatic charge-discharge cycles in 6 M potassium hydroxide (KOH) electrolyte.

Abstract:Cobalt-nickel bimetallic sulfides are promising candidates for supercapacitors due to their high theoretical specific capacity, good electrical conductivity and fast redox kinetics. Nevertheless, they confront challenges such as poor cycling stability, volume expansion, and complicated synthesis methods. To address these issues, in this work, a MOF-assisted synthesis strategy is developed to achieve the one-pot formation cobalt-nickel sulfide hollow microspheres. The 2D nanosheet-constructed hierarchical hollow configuration promotes rapid electron/ion transfer, provides more active sites and effectively mitigates volume expansion during cycling. The optimized Co1Ni4S exhibits high electrochemical performance, such as a specific capacity of 277.2mAh/g (2217F·g−1) at 1A·g−1, remarkable cycling stability with ~100% retention after 5,000 cycles, and favorable rate capability with 84.8% retention at 20A·g−1. Furthermore, an aqueous asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) assembled with the Co1Ni4S and active carbon (AC) derived from lotus pollen achieves an energy density of 86.9Wh·kg-1 at 800.1W·kg-1, along with significant cycling stability (97.1% retentions over 30,000 cycles). These superior results showcase a simple one-step method for developing superior-performing electrode materials applicable to advanced supercapacitors.

Abstract:Fe2O3-based cathode materials show high theoretical specific capacitance and a wide potential range, but it is limited development due to poor electrical conductivity, undesired rate capacity and long-term cycling stability. Herein, we introduce the interconnected NiS/Co3S4 nanosheets grown on Fe2O3 substrate (Fe2O3@NiS/Co3S4) through a facile in situ solution vulcanization process. Because of the synergistic effect between the Fe2O3 nanoparticles and NiCo-S nanosheets and its unique three-dimensional open structure providing abundant channels and active sites, it is deeply investigated the electrochemical performances as positive material of supercapacitors. Meanwhile, the electrode material exhibits specific capacity of 1213.7 F g−1 at 1 A g−1, about 64.7% capacity retention at 10 A g−1 and steady cycling performance about 85.2% retention after 5000 cycles at 5 A g-1. Finally, an asymmetric supercapacitor was assembled based on Fe2O3@NiS/Co3S4 and active carbon as the positive and negative electrodes. The energy density is 43.8 Wh kg−1 at the power density of 810 W kg−1. At the same time, 92.4 % capacitance retention after 10000 cycles at 5 A g-1 was obtained.

Abstract:Transition metal sulfides (TMSs) are considered as attractive materials in the areas of energy storage because of their unique redox properties, excellent electronic conductivity, as well as environmental friendliness. However, poor cyclic stability and limited electrochemical active sites hinder their further application. To address this issue, a flower-like hierarchical CuCo2S4 structure is constructed by a two-step hydrothermal method. In this nanostructure, CuCo2S4 grows outward to form a tightly bound hierarchical structure on the nickel foams (NFs). This oriented structure can provide more laminar gaps for electrolyte ion diffusion, exposing more reaction sites to increase the ion transport efficiency between the layers, reducing the ion transport resistance and improving the reaction kinetics. Thus, the CuCo2S4 electrode exhibits excellent energy storage performance, exhibiting a high specific capacity of 1415.6 F g−1 at 1 A g−1. After 10,000 cycles of 10 A g−1, it still has 91.9% of the initial performance. In addition, an asymmetrical supercapacitor (ASC) was constructed by choosing CuCo2S4 as the anode and RGO as the cathode, which has the maximum energy density (61.8 Wh Kg−1) at 812.1 W Kg−1 and significant cycling endurance (92.05% retention) at 10,000 turns. Briefly, the researchers successfully constructed an array of CuCo2S4 flower-like hierarchical nanostructures and confirmed their potential application in supercapacitors.

Smart construction of MnCo2O4 microspheres with multiple interiors: Morphological evolution and structure-performance relationship for supercapacitor electrodes

Abstract:The development of a simple and general approach for manufacturing complex hollow structures is essential to achieve rapid dynamic response and high energy density storage for supercapacitor electrodes. Herein, we report a versatile heating rate-controlled synthetic route to prepare MnCo2O4 microspheres with multiple interiors. Comparative study reveals that MnCo2O4 microspheres with core–shell structure (MCO-CSS) process the highest specific surface area (91.6 m2 g−1) and oxygen vacancy density (0.16), which can provide more electroactive sites for surface Faradic reaction and further facilitate the kinetics of rapid charge storage. While the porous shell and well-defined gap endow MCO-CSS with excellent permeability and low-resistance pathways for electrolyte ions, as well as enhanced volume change accommodation. Benefiting from the structural advantages, MCO-CSS displays an excellent specific capacitance of 1064.4F g−1 at 1 A g−1, remarkable rate capability, and satisfactory cycle stability (89.1% capacitance retention at 2 A g−1 over 1000 cycles). Additionally, an asymmetric supercapacitor device, with an MCO-CSS cathode and porous carbon spheres anode, delivers a remarkable energy density of 33.9 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 187.4 W kg−1, as well as 84.13% capacitance retention over 3000 cycles at 1 A g−1.

Abstract:Unitary or binary-metal oxides/hydroxides have been extensively studied as a promising energy storage material. However, their poor rate and cycling performances greatly restrict their practical applications. To address these issues, the electrochemical properties of the materials were improved by unique microstructure designing and multiple active metal-ion doping into the host materials. In this work, the electrode material composed of carbonate hydroxide (Ni0.3Co0.6Cu0.1(CO3)0.5(OH)) formed by co-substituting Co with Ni and Cu was successfully synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method. The synthetic urchin-like Ni0.3Co0.6Cu0.1(CO3)0.5(OH) active material exhibits excellent electrochemical performance, including a high specific capacitance of 1480 F g–1 at 1 A g–1 and remarkable rate performance with 72.6% capacitance retention with the current density increasing from 1 to 20 A g–1. Additionally, such an electrode material achieves excellent cycling performance with 83.4% capacity retention after 10 000 charge/discharge cycles at a high current density of 10 A g–1, showing great application prospects in energy storage devices.

Abstract:The developed porous structure and high density are essential to enhance the bulk performance of carbon-based supercapacitors. Nevertheless, it remains a significant challenge to optimize the balance between the porous structure and the density of carbon materials to realize superior gravimetric and areal electrochemical performance. The soluble starch-derived interconnected hierarchical porous carbon microspheres were prepared through a simple hydrothermal treatment succeeded by chemical activation with a low dosage of KOH. Due to the formation of interconnected spherical morphology, hierarchical porous structure, reasonable mesopore volume (0.33 cm3 g-1) and specific surface area (1162 m2 g-1), the prepared carbon microsphere has an ultrahigh capacitance of 394 F g-1 @ 1 A g-1 and a high capacitance retention of 62.7 % @ 80 A g-1. The assembled two-electrode device displays good cycle stability after 20,000 cycles and an ultra-high energy density of 11.6 Wh kg-1 @ 250 W kg-1. Moreover, the sample still exhibits a specific capacitance of 165 F g-1 @ 1 A g-1 at a high mass loading of 10 mg cm-2, resulting in a high areal capacitance of 1.65 F cm-2. The strategy proposed in this study, via a low-dose KOH activation process, provides the way for the synthesis of high-performance porous carbon materials.

Abstract:Urchin-like cobalt oxide (Co3O4) hollow spheres can be successfully prepared by thermal decomposition of cobalt carbonate hydroxide hydrate (Co(CO3)0.5(OH)·0.11H2O) obtained by template-assisted hydrothermal synthesis. The morphology, crystal structure evolution and thermal decomposition behaviors of the as-prepared products have been carefully investigated. A plausible formation mechanism of the urchin-like Co3O4 hollow spheres in the presence of hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) as the surfactant template is proposed. The urchin-like Co3O4 hollow spheres are further constructed as electrode materials for high-performance supercapacitors with a high specific capacitance of 460 F g-1 at a current density of 4 A g-1 and excellent cycling stability. Furthermore, as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), superior lithium storage performance of 1342.2 mA h g-1 (0.1 C) and 1122.7 mA h g-1 (0.2 C) can also be achieved. The excellent performances can be ascribed to the unique hierarchical urchin-like hollow structure of the electrode materials, which offers a large specific surface area, short electron and ion diffusion paths and high permeability while being directly in contact with the electrolyte. Moreover, the hollow structure with sufficient internal void spaces can self-accommodate volume change during electrochemical reactions, which improves the structural stability and integrity.

Abstract:It is necessary to develop hierarchical structured materials with excellent electrochemical characteristics and stability for energy storage. In this work, we synthesize a novel structure of ZnCo2O4/Ti3C2 on Ni foam by a simple hydrothermal method. The frameworks accelerates the kinetic of the electrochemical reaction and promotes the transfer of electrons. The cycling stability of the device maintains 108.2% after 4000 cycles. The result indicates that the prepared sample is an excellent candidate material for energy storage.
