Abstract:Deciphering the importance of nanostructures in advanced technologies for a broad application spectrum has far-reaching implications for humans and the environment. Cost-effective, abundant cobalt oxide nanoparticles (NPs) are among the most attractive and extensively utilized materials in biomedical sciences due to their high chemical stability, and biocompatibility. However, the methods used to develop the NPs are hazardous for human health and the environment. This article precisely examines diverse green synthesis methods employing plant extracts and microbial sources, shedding light on their mechanism, and eco-friendly attributes with more emphasis on biocompatible properties accompanied by their challenges and avenues for further research. An in-depth analysis of the synthesized cobalt oxide NPs by various characterization techniques reveals their multifaceted functionalities including cytotoxicity, larvicidal, antileishmanial, hemolytic, anticoagulating, thrombolytic, anticancer and drug sensing abilities. This revelatory and visionary article helps researchers to contribute to advancing sustainable practices in nanomaterial synthesis and illustrates the potential of biogenically derived cobalt oxide NPs in fostering green and efficient technologies for biomedical applications.

Abstract:Cobalt is essential to the metabolism of all animals due to its key role in cobalamin, also known as vitamin B12, the primary biological reservoir of cobalt as an ultra-trace element. Current cancer treatment strategies, including chemotherapy and radiotherapy, have been seriously restricted by their side effects and low efficiency for a long time, which urges us to develop new technologies for more effective and much safer anticancer therapies. Novel nanotechnologies, based on different kinds of functional nanomaterials, have been proved to act as effective and promising strategies for anticancer treatment. Based on the important biological roles of cobalt, cobalt oxide nanoparticles (NPs) have been widely developed for their attractive biomedical applications, especially their potential for anticancer treatments due to their selective inhibition of cancer cells. Thus, more and more attention has been attracted to the preparation, characterization and anticancer investigation of cobalt oxide nanoparticles in recent years, which is expected to introduce novel anticancer treatment strategies. In this review, we summarize the synthesis methods of cobalt oxide nanoparticles to discuss the advantages and restrictions for their preparation. Moreover, we emphatically discuss the anticancer functions of cobalt oxide nanoparticles as well as their underlying mechanisms to promote the development of cobalt oxide nanoparticles for anticancer treatments, which might finally benefit the current anticancer therapeutics based on functional cobalt oxide nanoparticles.

Dual-capable spinel cobalt oxide nanoparticles for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution and water contaminant removal

Abstract:This study investigates the synthesis and electrocatalytic performance of cobalt oxide (Co3O4) nanoparticles for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and their role in water treatment as contaminant removal agents. Cobalt oxide nanoparticles are recognized as promising materials in electrocatalysis due to their tunable properties and nanoscale engineering potential. Here, fine cobalt oxide nanoparticles are synthesized using the sol-gel method followed by various sintering temperatures to achieve precise control over surface morphology, size, and shape. Characterization via high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (HRSEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) elucidates the impact of sintering temperature on nanoparticle properties. Thin film electrodes of cobalt oxide are fabricated using the doctor blade method and evaluated using linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Among the tested sintering temperatures, cobalt oxide electrodes sintered at 600 °C exhibit superior catalytic activity, demonstrating an overpotential of 258 mV (vs RHE) at 10 mA cm-2 current density and a Tafel slope of 17.33 mV dec-1. Furthermore, these electrodes demonstrate excellent stability, maintaining OER performance for 10 h in 1 M NaOH electrolyte. Additionally, the role of cobalt oxide nanoparticles in water treatment is explored using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). Experimental results reveal that lower sintering temperatures enhance the electrocatalytic properties of cobalt oxide nanoparticles, highlighting their potential contribution to sustainable energy and water treatment technologies. This work underscores the significance of cobalt oxide nanoparticles as dual-functional materials for advancing electrocatalysis and water purification applications, thus paving the way for the development of efficient and environmentally friendly technologies.

Abstract:Cobalt nanoparticles (CoNPs) are promising nanomaterials with exceptional catalytic magnetic, electronic, and chemical properties. The nano size and developed surface open a wide range of applications of cobalt nanoparticles in biomedicine along with those properties. The present review assessed the current environmentally friendly synthesis methods used to synthesize CoNPs with various properties, such as size, zeta potential, surface area, and magnetic properties. We systematized several methods and provided some examples to illustrate the synthetic process of CoNPs, along with the properties, the chemical formula of obtained CoNPs, and their method of analysis. In addition, we also looked at the potential application of CoNPs from water purification cytostatic agents against cancer to theranostic and diagnostic agents. Moreover, CoNPs also can be used as contrast agents in magnetic resonance imaging and photoacoustic methods. This review features a comprehensive understanding of the synthesis methods and applications of CoNPs, which will help guide future studies on CoNPs.

Abstract:Spinel cobalt ferrite (CoFe 2 O 4 ) nanoparticles have attracted considerable interest owing to their remarkable structural, magnetic, and electrical characteristics, rendering them very adaptable for various applications. This paper thoroughly analyses the different production methods and their impact on the physical and functional characteristics of CoFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles, emphasising their potential in photocatalysis, sensing, and biomedicine. A comparative analysis of key synthesis techniques sol–gel, hydrothermal, co-precipitation, microemulsion, and combustion methods emphasizes the influence of synthesis selection on nanoparticle size, shape, and crystallinity. These parameters are essential for enhancing photocatalytic effectiveness in the degradation of organic contaminants under visible light irradiation. Additionally, their applicability as sensor materials for the detection of gases and chemicals, together with their potential in biosensing applications, is examined. In the biomedical field, CoFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles demonstrate potential for targeted drug delivery, magnetic hyperthermia, and imaging due to their adjustable magnetic characteristics and biocompatibility. The paper discusses the difficulties of optimising synthesis methods to improve performance in various applications and provides insights into future research areas to expand their applicability in environmental and healthcare technology.

Abstract:Cobalt nanoparticles have received great attentions from the researchers because of its unqiue applications in various sectors such as photocatalytic, antimrobial activity and electrochemical sensing. Consequently, in the recent past, a number of research studies published by the use of physical, chemical and plant extract based green synthesis approaches. Among these methods, plant extract based green route has been considered as valuable substitute of other methods for the nanoparticle synthesis since it is an inexpensive, biocompatible method, easy scale-up and fully avoid the requirement of additional stabilizing agents during the nanoparticle synthesis. Plant extracts contains various key phytochemicals such as phenols, alkaloids, terpenoids and tannins including various vitamins in significant concentrations. These phytochemicals act as reducing, capping and stabilizing agents during the synthesis of metal nanoparticles from their respective precursors. Due to these unique features of phytochemicals, cobalt nanoparticles have been effectively produced by the green synthesis approaches using extracts of plant parts such as roots, bark and leaf etc. This review summarizes the new findings in the synthesis of cobalt nanoparticles using extracts of different plants and their parts. The required characterization tools for the analysis of synthesized cobalt nanoparticles are also discussed. Further the advantages of cobalt nanoparticles in various applications such as photocatalytic environmental application for remediation of water pollution, electrochemical sensing and antimicrobial activity are specially focused in this review.

Abstract:Research and utilization of nanotechnology are growing exponentially in every aspect of life. The constant growth of applications for magnetic nanoparticles, specifically nanoferrites, attracted many researchers. Among them, nanocobalt ferrite is the most crucial and studied magnetic nanoparticle. Environmentally benign synthetic methods became necessary to minimize environmental and occupational hazards. Green synthesis approaches in science and technology are now widely applied in the synthesis of nanomaterials. Herein, we reviewed recent advances in synthesizing nanocobalt ferrites and their composites using various scientific search engines. Subsequently, various applications were discussed, such as environmental (treatment of water/wastewater, photocatalytic degradation of dyes, and nanosorbent for environmental remediation) and biomedical (nanobiosensors for cancer diagnosis at the primary stage, effective targeted drug delivery, magnetic resonance imaging, hyperthermia, and potential drug candidates against cancer and microbial infections). This review offers comprehensive knowledge on how to choose appropriate natural resources for the green synthesis of nanocobalt ferrite and the benefits of this approach compared to conventional methods.

Abstract:Abstract Since many of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved medications contain oxygen-containing heterocyclic molecules, they have been discovered to be quite important. Moreover, over the past 10 years, the field of reusable nanocatalysts has expanded quickly. Therefore, the development of nanotechnology has led to a wide range of applications for nanocatalysis in the synthesis of heterocyclic molecules. The domains of organic chemistry and pharmaceuticals have recently shown a great deal of interest in nanocatalyzed organic processes. Such nanocatalysts enable non-toxic, simpler, environmentally friendly, and more affordable synthetic processes that give only the most desirable compounds in higher quantities and provide simple catalyst separation. As a result of their efficient methods for separating catalysts and products, nanocatalysts were chosen over other catalysts for the synthesis of heterocyclic compounds. This review emphasized the preparation of nanocatalysts, synthetic approaches, and recycling studies of highly excited catalytic systems employed for the synthesis of oxygen-containing heterocyclic compounds.

Abstract:Iron oxide nanoparticle is of great interest due to its potent application as a catalyst. However, the synthetic route involves using toxic chemicals, which are notable for the harsh effect on the environment and are also costly. The present review focuses on a biosynthetic approach involving plant-based origin viz. roots, seeds, stems, flowers, leaves, and fruit extracts available in abundance and can be used to synthesize following the traditional synthesis methods. Iron oxide nanoparticles are synthesized via co-precipitation and sol–gel method. Other methods of synthesis of nanoparticles are also discussed. The size of the material is dependent on the synthetic route, pH and temperature of the reaction medium. The application as catalyst are totally dependent on the size. Iron oxides show potent application in dye degradation, conversion of various organic compounds to eco benign compounds which cause pollution and various other organic reactions of synthetic interest. The photocatalytic activity is due to the electrons and holes generated when the catalyst irradiated with sunlight. Magnetic iron oxides is a potent catalysts in organic reactions. The catalyst's efficiency can be increased if decorated with other metals, metallic oxides, and hydroxyapatites. Due to the magnetic nature, the designed catalyst containing iron oxide can degrade several dyes and can be used to carry out selective reactions of industrial interest.

Abstract:This article has reviewed about one of the most potential metal oxide nanoparticles, Cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2NPs) and various synthesis methods including combustion, microwave, solvothermal, sol-gel, simple co-precipitation method, spray pyrolysis, hydrothermal synthesis, microemulsion method, solvo thermal method and Green synthesis: plant mediated (Olea Europaea, Prosopis juliflora, Azadirachta indica, Petroselinum crispum, Aloe Barbadensis, Hibiscus sabdariffa), Nutrient mediated (Honey), Fungus mediated (Aspergillus niger, Humicola sp) and Biopolymer mediated (starch). CeO2NPs catalytic properties such as superoxide dismutase mimetic (SOD) and catalase mimetic activities. Biomedical applications of CeO2NPs such as anticancer, antiinflammatory, antioxidative, antimicrobial, antidiabetic and for the treatment of various neurodegenerative diseases are also reported.

Abstract:Nanotechnology involves creating, analyzing, and using tiny materials. Cobalt oxide nanoparticles (Co3O4 NPs) have several medicinal uses due to their unique antifungal, antibacterial, antioxidant, anticancer, larvicidal, anticholinergic, antileishmanial, wound healing, and antidiabetic capabilities. Cobalt oxide nanoparticles (Co3O4 NPs) with attractive magnetic properties have found widespread use in biomedical applications, including magnetic resonance imaging, magnetic hyperthermia, and magnetic targeting. The high surface area of Co3O4 leads to unique electrical, optical, catalytic, and magnetic properties, which make it a promising candidate for biomedical bases. Additionally, cobalt nanoparticles with various oxidation states (i.e., Co2+, Co3+, and Co4+) are beneficial in numerous utilizations. Co3O4 nanoparticles as a catalyzer accelerate the conversion rate of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to harmful hydroxyl radicals (•OH), which destroy tumor cells. However, it is also possible to enhance the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and successfully treat cancer by combining these nanoparticles with drugs or other nanoparticles. This review summarizes the past concepts and discusses the present state and development of using Co3O4 NPs in cancer treatments by ROS generation. This review emphasizes the advances and current patterns in ROS generation, remediation, and some different cancer treatments using Co3O4 nanoparticles in the human body. It also discusses synthesis techniques, structure, morphological, optical, and magnetic properties of Co3O4 NPs.

Abstract:<span>Silica and silicon nanomaterials have diverse applications in the field of drug/gene delivery, lightweight aggregates, regenerative medicine, tissue engineering, cancer diagnosis/therapy, catalytic applications, and energy storage. There is an increasing demand for eco-friendly synthesis of silica and silicon nanomaterials with enough cost-effectiveness, safety, reliability, simplicity, scalability, and controllable particle size distribution features. These materials can be effectively obtained from various agrarian sustainable bio-resources, including rice husk ash, sugar-cane, coffee husk, wheat husk and corn cob ash. Using green and sustainable techniques can cause to eliminate or reduce laborious/complicated procedures and reduce the environmental contaminants to obtain advanced materials for high-tech applications. Unveiling the diverse bioactivity of cobalt oxide nanoparticles produced through carboxymethyl cellulose extraction

Abstract:This study explores an eco-friendly method for synthesizing Cobalt oxide nanoparticles (Co3O4NPs) using extracted carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as a reducing and stabilizing agent. The Co3O4NPs, characterized via various analyses, demonstrated a crystalline structure with sizes ranging from 10.9 to 28.2 nm. Microscopic imaging confirmed a uniform spherical morphology with an average diameter of 27.2 nm. The biological activities of Co3O4NPs were investigated extensively, highlighting their superior antibacterial efficacy compared to amoxicillin-clavulanic acid. These nanoparticles exhibited potent antioxidant properties and demonstrated safety for potential applications based on erythrocyte viability results. Additionally, Co3O4NPs displayed significant potency against Michigan Cancer Foundation-7 (MCF-7) breast cancer cells and showed promising α-amylase enzyme inhibitory activity, highlighting their multifunctional therapeutic potential as antioxidant, antibacterial, anticancer, and alpha-amylase inhibition assay.

Abstract:Cerium oxide nanoparticles have significantly improved catalytic properties and are of increasing interest in the nanoparticle research field hence the current trends in cerium oxide nanoparticles are reviewed here. Unlike previous reviews which have focused primarily on the biosynthesis of cerium oxide nanoparticles, their properties, and applications, this review will focus on the unique physical, chemical, and biological properties of cerium oxide nanoparticles, the role of oxygen vacancies or defects in the lattice structure, the ratio of oxidation states in determining their catalytic properties and applications in biosensing, drug or gene delivery, etc. have been discussed. Furthermore, the limitations of the bare form of cerium oxide nanoparticles and the advances in the field of surface coating by different ligands to overcome the issues of bare nanoparticles have been discussed. The review concludes with a discussion on the environmental aspects and toxicity of cerium oxide nanoparticles and their potential future in practical applications.

Abstract:Copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles have considerable attention their unique properties and potential for advanced sustainable applications in electronics, energy storage, catalysis, environmental remediation, biomedical applications, and sensing. This review focuses on the synthesis, characterization, and sustainable applications of CuO nanoparticles update serving as a concise and informative resource. The synthesis methods, physical, chemical, and green, sustainable synthesis methods such as biosynthesis, plant extracts, and green chemistry, each offer distinct approaches to creating materials and compounds with varying degrees of environmental impact, efficiency, and applicability in diverse fields ranging from medicine to materials science. Variations and discrepancies in interpretation may arise from different experimental conditions, sample preparation methods, and data analysis approaches, challenging the consensus and comparability of results obtained using various characterization techniques for CuO nanoparticles. Addressing these variations through standardization and understanding the limitations of each technique are crucial for reliable characterization. The review also highlighted the importance of sustainable applications of CuO nanoparticles including their use in energy storage, catalysis, wastewater treatment, and biomedicine. Further research is needed to optimize the synthesis methods of CuO nanoparticles, assess their potential toxicity and environmental impact, and develop standardized characterization techniques. Abstract:This study presents an innovative and environmentally friendly approach for the synthesis of cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2 NPs), characterized using advanced techniques such as FTIR, XRD, SEM, TEM and XPS. Notable spectral peaks at 457 cm −1 and 1380 cm −1 confirm the successful formation of CeO2 NPs, with an average size of 5.72 nm and a spherical morphology revealed through XRD and SEM analysis. We explored the multifaceted applications of these synthesized NPs, particularly their impressive electrical properties and catalytic capabilities. The CeO2 NPs demonstrated a remarkable role in synthesizing sulfides from thiols and bromoesters, which were further oxidized to sulfoxides with excellent yields using m -chloroperbenzoic acid ( m -CPBA). Electrical property assessments revealed that the CeO2 NPs exhibit insulating behavior at lower frequencies while transitioning to semiconducting characteristics at higher frequencies. Furthermore, we evaluated the cytotoxicity of the CeO2 NPs on MCF-7 human breast cancer cells, alongside tests for biocompatibility through blood hemolysis. The NPs displayed a significant DPPH radical scavenging activity with an effective concentration of 242 μg/mL, and a safe hemolytic activity at levels below 2.5 mg/mL, indicating their potential as promising candidates in biomedical applications.

Abstract:Abstract Metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) have found a variety of applications in numerous industrial, medical, and environmental fields s, attributable to recent advances in the nanotechnology field. Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO 2 -NPs) have gained importance as metal oxide NPs due to their potential in various fields, particularly nanomedicine and other biomedicine fields. Several studies have confirmed that NPs produced via the biosynthesis route using natural resources have significant advantages such as fewer toxic contaminants, less subsequent complex chemical synthesis, environmental friendliness, cost-effectiveness, and stability when compared to NPs produced by conventional methods, and its production with controlled shapes and sizes. Therefore, considerable effort is being expended to implement biological synthesis methods with these proven advantages. TiO 2 -NPs can be made using a variety of biological, chemical, and physical methods. Physicochemical methods are costly, emit high levels of toxic chemicals into the atmosphere, and consume a lot of energy. On the other hand, the biological approach is an environmentally safe, cost-effective, dependable, convenient, and easy way to synthesize TiO 2 -NPs. In this review, the bio-mediated synthesis, as well as various biomedical applications of TiO 2 -NPs, were discussed.

Abstract:Iron oxide nanoparticles are iron-based nanomaterials that are, to date, successfully used in various areas of industry and everyday life. The sustainability of iron is a factor which leads to wide variety of research of the iron oxide roles in industrial catalysis and biomedicine. An industrial catalysis and biomedical applications are here connected, because these two groups of applications demand very similar preparation of materials: shape of the particles and their size, the particular and, as uniform as possible, particle porosity. Further, commonly used synthesis methods are outlined, in order to be able to select the preferred synthesis method according to final desired application of the nanoparticles.

Abstract:In recent times, metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) have been regarded as having important commercial utility. However, the potential toxicity of these nanomaterials has also been a crucial research concern. In this regard, an important solution for ensuring lower toxicity levels and thereby facilitating an unhindered application in human consumer products is the green synthesis of these particles. Although a naïve approach, the biological synthesis of metal oxide NPs using microorganisms and plant extracts opens up immense prospects for the production of biocompatible and cost-effective particles with potential applications in the healthcare sector. An important area that calls for attention is cancer therapy and the intervention of nanotechnology to improve existing therapeutic practices. Metal oxide NPs have been identified as therapeutic agents with an extended half-life and therapeutic index and have also been reported to have lesser immunogenic properties. Currently, biosynthesized metal oxide NPs are the subject of considerable research and analysis for the early detection and treatment of tumors, but their performance in clinical experiments is yet to be determined. The present review provides a comprehensive account of recent research on the biosynthesis of metal oxide NPs, including mechanistic insights into biological production machinery, the latest reports on biogenesis, the properties of biosynthesized NPs, and directions for further improvement. In particular, scientific reports on the properties and applications of nanoparticles of the oxides of titanium, cerium, selenium, zinc, iron, and copper have been highlighted. This review discusses the significance of the green synthesis of metal oxide nanoparticles, with respect to therapeutically based pharmaceutical applications as well as energy and environmental applications, using various novel approaches including one-minute sonochemical synthesis that are capable of responding to various stimuli such as radiation, heat, and pH. This study will provide new insight into novel methods that are cost-effective and pollution free, assisted by the biodegradation of biomass.

Abstract:Spinel-type oxides are technologically important in many fields, including electronics, magnetism, catalysis and electrochemical energy storage and conversion. Typically, these materials are prepared by conventional ceramic routes that are energy consuming and offer limited control over shape and size. Moreover, for mixed-metal oxide spinels (for example, CoxMn3−xO4), the crystallographic phase sensitively correlates with the metal ratio, posing great challenges to synthesize active product with simultaneously tuned phase and composition. Here we report a general synthesis of ultrasmall cobalt manganese spinels with tailored structural symmetry and composition through facile solution-based oxidation–precipitation and insertion–crystallization process at modest condition. As an example application, the nanocrystalline spinels catalyse the oxygen reduction/evolution reactions, showing phase and composition co-dependent performance. Furthermore, the mild synthetic strategy allows the formation of homogeneous and strongly coupled spinel/carbon nanocomposites, which exhibit comparable activity but superior durability to Pt/C and serve as efficient catalysts to build rechargeable Zn–air and Li–air batteries.
