Abstract:Iron hexacyanoferrate (FeHCF) is regarded as a promising cathode material of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to the merits of easy preparation, low cost and three-dimensional open framework. However, the practical application of FeHCF is highly restricted by the intrinsic [Fe(CN)6]4-vacancy and coordinated water as well as nanoscale particles. Herein, sodium citrate is introduced to mediate the drawbacks of FeHCF, resulting in microscale particles with less water content. Accordingly, the modified sample, FeHCF-3, achieved the performance of 92 mA h g-1 at 100 mA g-1 and 80 % capacity retention after 300 cycles. Furthermore, an optimal iron hexacyanoferrate (FeHCF-H-2) with high-salt-concentration preparation is designed and performs a good reversibility of 96 mA h g-1 after 700 cycles at 100 mA g-1. Such strategy may drive the application of high-tap, low-defect and stable cathode for SIBs.(c) 2023 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:FeNiHCF was prepared by co-precipitation method, and the influence of synthetic temperature on the sodium storage performance was studied. The microstructure and micromorphology of the as-prepared FeNiHCF were characterized by XRD and SEM. A sodium ion half cell was constructed with FeNiHCF as cathode and sodium as anode. The sodium storage performance of the prepared FeNiHCF was characterized by cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge/discharge test. The results show that the change of synthetic temperature affects the micromorphology and sodium storage performance of the material. The initial sodium content, specific capacity and cycle stability of FeNiHCF prepared at 60 degrees C are the best. The FeNiHCF prepared at 60 degrees C is a very promising cathode material for sodium ion batteries.

Abstract:In this study, highly crystalline FeFe(CN)6 with metal-organic framework is synthesized and measured in NaNO3 and LiNO3. Electrochemical kinetics, physical and chemical changes about the insertion and extraction processes of sodium ions and lithium ions in FeFe(CN)6 are compared and discussed. Intriguingly, it exhibits a good electrochemical performance in sodium aqueous batteries, with a capacity of 118 mAh g−1 at 400 mA g−1, but a poor electrochemical behavior in lithium aqueous batteries. This study sheds light on the different insertion processes between sodium ions and lithium ions in FeFe(CN)6, that the outer petaloid-like structure forms on the surface of FeFe(CN)6 after Li ions insertion with little volume expansion, while FeFe(CN)6 after Na ions insertion could still maintain the cubic-like structure with lattice change. Different insertion mechanisms of sodium ions and lithium ions are proposed that hydrated Na ions could insert at interstitial sites, while hydrated Li ions are more likely to occupy large open sites due to the larger radius of hydrated Li ions than hydrated Na ions. Besides, insertion/extraction performance and capacitive preformance dominate in NaNO3 and LiNO3, respectively. These differences may lead to the different electrochemical behaviors between sodium-ion and lithium-ion aqueous batteries.
Effect of EDTA on Fe( Ⅲ) dissolution of polymer-based nano-hydrated ferric oxide

Abstract:Application of environmental nanocomposites in water /wastewater treatment has attracted increasing attention because of its excellent performance in removal of target pollutants. In the present study,we prepared a polymer-supported hydrated ferric oxide(HFO-D001) through chemical liquid deposition technique. Fe(Ⅲ) dissolution of HFO-D001 in the presence of EDTA in solution under various experimental conditions,such as EDTA concentration,dissolution time,solution pH and coexisting ions,were examined. At pH = 3,Fe(Ⅲ) dissolution from HFO-D001 was enhanced significantly as EDTA concentration increased. However,under pH = 5 and 7,negligible Fe(Ⅲ) was detected in solution due to the protection of the polymer host and the electrostatic repulsion between EDTA and sulfonic acid groups of D001. Meanwhile,the coexisting cations such as Cu2 +or Ni2 +(0~2 mg·L-1) could inhibit Fe(Ⅲ) dissolution to a certain degree.

Abstract:In this work, sodium-rich iron hexacyanoferrate Na1.74Fe[Fe(CN)6]0.90.2.07H2O (NaFeHCF) with a cubic structure is firstly prepared via a bottom-up approach. The electrochemical reaction mechanism and cycling performance maintenance of as-prepared NaFeHCF are carefully investigated. It is found that there exists some irreversible transformation of sodium positions in iron hexacyanoferrate during electrochemical cycling. Due to the highly itinerant electron state between high spin FeHS and low spin FeLS during redox reaction, the electron transfer in the FeLS3+/FeLS2+ at above 4 V gradually shift to that in the FeHS3+/FeHS2+ at about 3.35 V. However, such a dynamic transformation is not favorable for cycling stability, as more sodium content left in the 24d positions of cubic structure helps stabilize the framework and alleviate the capacity fading. The effects of the cutoff potential, the activated rate at 1st cycle, and the temperature are carefully investigated to find an operating window with insignificant transformation, where the sodium-rich iron hexacyanoferrate presents high cycling stability at 25 degrees C (with a capacity retention of 84.1% for 500 cycles at the current density of 600 mAg-1).

Abstract:In this work, for the performance enhancement of iron hexacyanoferrate, an electrochemically active Mn-doped iron hexacyanoferrate cathode is fabricated via a bottom-up approach. It is found that the pre-treatment of interstitial water and appropriate Mn doping are two keys to achieving higher capacity and higher stability. The interstitial water has a trade-off effect between the alleviation of volume expansion upon Na+ (de)intercalation and the retardation of Na-ion diffusion. The moisture-tailored iron hexacyanoferrate with appropriate Mn doping exhibits a high initial Coulombic efficiency of 94.8%, enhanced capacity and rate performance, and excellent cycling stability. These results benefit from the fact that the extraction/insertion of Na ions from/into the lattice via a solid-solution mechanism correspond to both the slight volume expansion and fast sodium diffusion rate; otherwise, the removal of interstitial water and a higher Mn content might lead to poor cycling stability due to excessive volume expansion resulting from rhombohedral to cubic phase transformation. Finally, the less demand on the control of air humidity for the fabrication of electrodes and the potential for the full cell coupled with hard carbon are also demonstrated, which shows great potential for practical applications.

Abstract:Fe@C-VS4/RGO composite is synthesized via ball-milling the mixture of VS4/RGO and Fe@C nanoparticles, and exhibits better electrochemical stability than the pristine VS4/RGO. Through the CV, galvanostatic tests in different potential range, and DFT calculation, it is found that metal nanoparticles play positive effects on the redox reactions of VS4, which can restrain the irreversible reactions between polysulfides and ester based electrolytes, and catalyze the conversion of Li2S into S. our results provide a new strategy to improve the electrochemical stability of sulfur/sulfides electrodes in carbonate ester electrolytes via the incorporation of metal nanoparticles. Abstract:The synthesis of NaxKyFe[Fe(CN)(6)] througha simple co-precipitation method and the application of these nanoparticles in sodium-ion batteries are presented. K1.90Fe[Fe(CN)(6)] with a cubic structure shows low volumetric change during electrochemical cycling. It is clarified by ex-situ X-ray diffraction and cyclic voltammetry curves that K+ influences the intercalation sites of the neighboring Na+. More significantly, this hexacyanoferrate delivers a high capacity of 137.0 mAh g(-1) at a current density of 14 mA g(-1) and superior cyclability with 94% capacity retention after 120 cycles, showing great promise for sodium-ion battery applications. Abstract:Iron (Fe)-based layered oxide cathodes that employ Fe 3+ /Fe 4+ redox reaction present a family of attractive cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries as iron is abundant, low-cost, and environmentally benign. However, their electrochemical performance is not yet satisfactory and requires further improvement. In this study, we investigate the effect of electrolytes on the electrochemical performance of α -NaFeO 2 , a prototypical model of Fe-based layered cathodes. First, we established the critical impact of the poor cathode-electrolyte interfacial stability on cell performances. Systematic electrochemical tests and material characterizations further revealed the degradation mechanism in which the highly reactive Fe 4+ state in the charged Na 1−x FeO 2 electrodes promotes severe electrolyte decomposition and subsequent growth of a thick interface layer that leads to impedance rise and performance degradation. In addition, the superior performance of NaPF 6 over NaClO 4 and the beneficial effect of the FEC additive are reported.

Abstract:In this work, a facile one-pot two-step mechanochemical technology is firstly developed to prepare Fe/Mn-based binary hexacyanoferrates (Nax(FeMn)[Fe(CN)6]y, FeMnHCF)/carbon composites by coupling in-situ construction of the conductive network and solid-state reaction. It is found that construction of hierarchical conductive network is favorable to improve the rate performance and cycling stability, with an 80.5% capacity retention over 1000 cycles at 360 mA/g. Furthermore, the capacity attenuation and stabilization mechanisms are inves-tigated by GITT, EIS, and ex-situ XRD. The capacity attenuation in the early stage can be attributed to the large charge transfer resistance, while in the latter stage the long cycling stability is ascribed to the solid solution reaction with the mitigated stress distortion during the desodiation/sodiation process. Overall, the proposed mechanochemical synthesis of Fe/Mn-based binary hexacyanoferrate shows great potential in environmental friendliness and cost-saving production as well as comprehensive product performance.

Abstract:Cu-based cathodes in aqueous batteries become very attractive in view of high theoretical capacity, moderate operation voltage and rich reserves of raw materials. However, their applications are obstructed by serious side reactions. The side reaction mainly arises from the spontaneous formation of Cu 2 O, which occupies the electrode surface and lowers the reaction reversibility. Here, Na 2 EDTA is introduced to address these issues. Both experimental results and theoretical calculations indicate that the Na 2 EDTA reshapes the solvation structure of Cu 2+ and modifies the electrode/electrolyte interface. Therefore, the redox potential of Cu 2+ /Cu 2 O is reduced and the surface of Cu is protected from H 2 O, thereby inhibiting the formation of Cu 2 O. Meanwhile, the change in the solvation structure reduces the electrostatic repulsion between Cu 2+ and the cathode, leading to high local concentration and benefiting uniform deposition. The results shed light on the applications of rechargeable Cu-based batteries.

The Effect of Crystal Face of Fe2O3 on the Electrochemical Performance for Lithium-ion Batteries

Abstract:Fe2O3 nanorods exposing (001) and (010) plane as well as Fe2O3 nanosheets exposing (001) plane have been successfully synthesized. Fe2O3 nanosheets exhibit better cycle performance and rate capabilities than that of Fe2O3 nanorods. The discharge capacity of Fe2O3 nanosheets can stabilize at 865 mAh/g at the rate of 0.2 C (1C = 1000 mA/g) and 570 mAh/g at the rate of 1.2 C after 80 cycles, which increased by 90% and 79% compared with 456 mAh/g and 318 mAh/g of Fe2O3 nanorods. In comparison with (010) plane, the (001) plane of hematite possesses larger packing density of Fe3+ and O2−, which is responsible for the superior electrochemical performances of Fe2O3 nanosheets than that of Fe2O3 nanorods. In addition, potentiostatic intermittent titration (PITT) results show the diffusion coefficients of Li+ (DLi) of Fe2O3 nanosheets is higher than that of Fe2O3 nanorods. The higher diffusion coefficients of Li+ is favorable for the excellent lithium-storage capabilities and rate capability of Fe2O3 nanosheets. Inspired by our results, we can design and synthesize Fe2O3 or other electrodes with high performances according to their structure features in future.
Interstitial Water Improves Structural Stability of Iron Hexacyanoferrate for High-Performance Sodium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) are considered one of the promising cathodes for sodium-ion batteries because of their low cost and tunable structure. As an intrinsic characteristic, the influence of structured water in PBAs on the electrochemical properties is still controversial. Herein, low-vacancy iron hexacyanoferrate with different interstitial water contents is synthesized through the citric acid-assisted single iron source method. Ex situ Fourier transform infrared and X-ray diffraction characterization reveals that the interstitial water can stably exist in the Prussian blue framework during repeated cycling. The long-standing interstitial water can reduce the volume change during the Na+ insertion/extraction process, resulting in improved cycling stability. Thanks to the low Fe(CN)64- vacancies and pillar role of interstitial water in the crystal framework, the HW-PB exhibits a high reversible capacity of 117 mAh g-1 and excellent long cycle performance with a capacity retention of 91% after 1380 cycles. This work broadens the understanding of the relationship between the interstitial water in PBAs and Na-storage performances, providing guidance for the precise synthesis of high-quality PBAs.

Abstract:As a promising electrode material for electrochemical energy storage, iron hexacyanoferrate (FeHCF) possesses diverse structures and properties that strongly relate to synthetic conditions. In this work, we synthesized FeHCFs by co-precipitation route and studied the influence of two surfactants (sodium citrate and potassium bitartrate) on the material characteristics and K + storage properties of the resulting FeHCFs. Electrochemical measurements revealed that the FeHCF synthesized in the absence of surfactants exhibited superior performance to those synthesized in the presence of either surfactant due to reduced electrical resistivity and improved diffusion kinetics. The assembled all-solid-state symmetric device delivered an areal capacitance of 3.24 mF cm −2 , a wide potential window (1.4 V), an energy density of 3.17 μWh cm −2 , and a power density of 315.7 μW cm −2 at a current density of 0.5 mA cm −1 , indicating its potential application for energy storage.

Abstract:Manganese hexacyanoferrate (MnHCF) has attracted much attention as promising cathode material for Li and Na ion batteries, owning to its low cost, environmental friendliness, high specific capacity and voltage plateau. Here, the electrochemical performance and electronic structure information of MnHCF were studied in aqueous Zn-ion batteries (ZIBs). Based on the cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge/discharge results, an activation of Fe-sites during beginning cycles was observed, and the capacity contribution of Fe-sites increases from 30 to 86% at C/20 during the first 10 cycles. The local geometric and electronic structure information of MnHCF was investigated by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) in a set of ex-situ electrodes. From Fe K-edge spectra, it shows a consistent oxidation and reduced state in charged and discharged electrodes, and this indicates that there is no apparent change for the local Fe-sites environment. However, the XAS spectra of Mn K-edge show apparent change after 10 cycles. Compared to the rhombohedral phase of Zinc hexacyanoferrate (ZnHCF), a -Zn-CN-Fe- structural framework was detected in the cycled MnHCF samples, and this indicates that a part of Zn replaced Mn-sites, because of the dissolution of the Mn-sites. The gradual activation of Fe-sites at the beginning cycles can be attributed to the alleviation spatial resistance with the dissolution of Mn-sites, and the replacement of Zn for Mn explains the decreasing capacity during cycling.

Abstract:Sodium Mn-doped iron fluorophosphate Na 2 Fe 0·5 Mn 0·5 PO 4 F is a potential positive electrode material for lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries. This study outlines the synthesis of Na 2 Fe 0·5 Mn 0·5 PO 4 F powder through a simplified and more accessible production method. The X-rays diffraction (XRD) technique showed a pure phase with monoclinic symmetry (S.G. P2 1 /n). The resulting uncoated material (labeled as NFeMPF) was ball-milled with dopamine hydrochloride (mentioned as dopamine hereafter) as a carbon source to enhance the specific surface and improve its electronic conductivity. Raman spectra confirmed the presence of residual carbon after the pyrolysis process. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) demonstrated the stability of Mn-doped iron fluorophosphate up to 1000 °C. Additionally, Mössbauer spectroscopy disclosed structural improvements in the material, indicating the reduction of all Fe(III) when coated with dopamine. The uncoated material discharge capacity when cycled against sodium exhibits reversible capacities of only 80, 67, and 38 mAh/g during the first cycle at C/20, C/16, and C/5, respectively. The coated NFeMPF@D delivered improved capacities of 272 and 202 mAh/g at C/20 and C/16, respectively. This highlights the considerable promise of the investigated phosphate-based electrode material as a cathode composite for the next generation of sodium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Iron-based hexacyanoferrate (Fe-HCF) are promising cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to their unique open-channel structure that facilitates fast ion transport and framework stability. However, practical implementation of SIBs has been hindered by low initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE), poor rate performance, and short lifespan. Herein, we report a coordination engineering to synthesize sodium-rich Fe-HCF as cathodes for SIBs through a uniquely designed 10-kg-scale chemical reactor. Our study systematically investigated the relationship between coordination surroundings and the electrochemical behavior. Building on this understanding, the cathode delivered a reversible capacity of 99.3 mAh g-1 at 5 C (1 C = 100 mA g-1), exceptional rate capability (51 mAh g-1 even at 100 C), long lifespan (over 15,000 times at 50 C), and a high ICE of 92.7%. A full cell comprising the Fe-HCF cathode and hard carbon (HC) anode exhibited an impressive cyclic stability with a high-capacity retention rate of 98.3% over 1,000 cycles. Meanwhile, this material can be readily scaled to the practical levels of yield. The findings underscore the potential of Fe-HCF as cathodes for SIBs and highlight the significance of controlling nucleation and morphology through coordination engineering for a sustainable energy storage system.

Abstract:Understanding how the morphology and microstructure of secondary particles are affected by pH is essential to design spherical and dense hydroxide aggregates as precursors of high-performance cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries. Furthermore, the formation and growth of aggregates are studied by monitoring the changes in surface morphologies and crystal structures of precursors at different reaction times. As the pH value varied, two notable phenomena occurred during crystal growth: the fast growth of grains in the early stage as the pH decreased and the layered growth of grains in the later stage with increased pH values. Such findings could be explained from the following two perspectives. First, the decrease in pH causes a significant increase in the complex ion concentration, thereby facilitating the growth of crystals along the [010] direction. Second, an increase in pH generally accelerates deprotonation of the crystal surface, thus strengthening the adsorption of complex ions on the crystal surface and promoting layer-by-layer growth of primary grains along the [001] direction.

Abstract:The stability of the electrolyte plays a crucial role in influencing the efficiency of iron deposition and the quality of the resulting product. This study explores the roles of different additives, L -ascorbic acid (AA), citric acid (CA), and sodium citrate (CA-Na), in maintaining the stability of ferrous ions and investigates their effects on the hydrogen evolution and iron deposition process. Experimental results indicate that the stabilizing effects of AA, CA, and CA-Na on ferrous ions weaken in succession. The addition of AA effectively counteracts air oxidation, while the addition of CA-Na significantly inhibits hydrogen evolution reactions. These additives can form complexes or coordination compounds, engaging in coordination reactions with iron ions, thereby reducing the precipitation and oxidation of iron ions and maintaining the stability of iron ion concentration in the electrolyte. However, they also exert a certain degree of influence on the cathodic deposition of iron ions. The results of this study suggest that, in chloride aqueous solutions, the judicious addition of additives such as AA, CA, and CA-Na can effectively inhibit the oxidation of ferrous ions, maintain the stability of iron ions in the electrolyte, and concurrently suppress the occurrence of hydrogen evolution reactions.

Synthesis and Characterization of Citric Acid-Modified Iron Oxide Nanoparticles Prepared with Electrohydraulic Discharge Treatment

Abstract:Chemical co-precipitation from ferrous and ferric salts at a 1:1.9 stoichiometric ratio in NH4OH base with ultrasonication (sonolysis) in a low vacuum environment has been used for obtaining colloidal suspensions of Fe3O4 nanoparticles coated with citric acid. Before coating, the nanoparticles were processed by electrohydraulic discharges with a high discharge current (several tens of amperes) in a water medium using a pulsed direct current. Magnetite nanoparticles were obtained with an average crystallite diameter D = 25–28 nm as obtained by XRD and particle sizes of 25 nm as measured by small-angle X-ray scattering. Magnetometry showed that all samples were superparamagnetic. The saturation magnetization for the citric acid covered samples after electrohydraulic processing showed higher value (58 emu/g) than for the directly coated samples (50 emu/g). Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed the presence and binding of citric acid to the magnetite surface by chemisorption of carboxylate ions. Hydrodynamic sizes obtained from DLS and zeta potentials were 93 and 115 nm, −26 and −32 mV for the citric acid covered nanoparticles and 226 nm and 21 mV for the bare nanoparticles, respectively. The hydraulic discharge treatment resulted in a higher citric acid coverage and better particle dispersion. The developed method can be used in nanoparticle synthesis for biomedical applications.
