Abstract:The sweat evaporation strategy has shown great potential for passive cooling of the human body. However, the accumulation of sweat at the skin resulting from the hindrance by traditional fabrics increases the heat load and causes the clothing to stick to the skin. Sweat evaporation cooling textiles that perform the sweat-wicking function of sweat glands are thus highly desirable. Here, a sweat gland-like (Sg-like) fabric is proposed for personal thermal-wet comfort management. The Sg-like channels formed in the fabric through spraying and ultrasonic welding processes can pull liquid water from the skin and spread it out over the outer layer of the fabric for rapid evaporation. The Sg-like design principle is also well-validated based on colored fabrics. In artificial sweating skin demonstrations, the temperature of skin covered with the Sg-like fabric is comparable to that of bare skin and lower than that of skin covered with commercial textiles. In human body tests, a temperature reduction of approximate to 2 degrees C is observed in sweating for skin coated with the Sg-like fabric compare with skin-coated cotton. It is expected this work offers promising guidelines for developing a sweat-evaporation cooling textile to meet the thermal-wet comfort requirements of the human body. The processed sweat gland-like fabric via spraying and ultrasonic welding processes can pull liquid water from the skin and spread it out over the outer layer of the fabric for rapid evaporation. Abstract:Humans sweat to cool down and dissipate heat in indoor and outdoor environments. The evaporation of liquid sweat absorbs body heat and reduces skin temperature. However, when the wearer sweats a lot or is fully wet by external liquids such as rain, even the best moisture management fabrics can be soaked and saturated, becoming unbreathable, heavy, and clingy, and imposing significant reduction in wearer's comfort and performance. Herein, inspired by liquid collection and release processes on the desert beetle's skin, we develop an innovative moisture management fabric, transferring excessive sweat from the skin side to the outer surface of the fabric and dissipating it in terms of droplets, while blocking and repelling the external liquids. The completely unidirectional liquid transport is achieved in the developed nature-inspired fabric, which is treated with global hydrophobicity and discrete localized wettability gradient by a sustainable plasma treatment method. Moreover, the proposed fabric shows improved thermal comfort with high breathability, reduced clinginess, and dry skin surface. Specifically, a highly directional water transport capability of 1647.9% is obtained using a Moisture Management Tester, while the water resistance from the external side is equivalent to a water column of 15 mm height. The water flow rate from the inner skin side to the environment is equal to 91.44 g/min∙m2, which is much higher than that of the high sweating rate of an adult (i.e., 15g/min∙m2). Regulation of liquid movement in the proposed fabric will attract wide potential applications, including sportswear, worker uniform, casualwear, protective clothing, firefighter apparel, and military clothing. Maintaining moisture and thermal comfort while adapting to the expanded ambient temperature range of the air-conditioning system will also be desirable in building energy conservation.

Abstract:Personal wet-thermal management (PWTM) is not only highly desirable for human health and comfort, but also plays a notable role in the emerging smart wearable clothes and electronic devices as the levels of integration and multifunction are determined by it. In “human skin-wearable fibrous fabric-external environment” microclimate system, wearable fibrous fabric, as the “second skin” of human body, is the key to PWTM. In particular, excellent sweat/moisture transport capacity combined with passive radiative cooling, which concentrated on promoting sweat/moisture transport, solar radiation reflection and human body infrared radiation emission with zero-energy consumption, have attracted tremendous attentions. Nonetheless, improving sweat/moisture transport and radiative cooling performances, viz., boosting the synergistic management of wet-thermal to extend its applications remains a challenge. Herein, we report a facile PWTM strategy by fabricating hydrophobic/hydrophilic Janus membrane with oriented fibers decorated by silicon oxide nanoparticles via electrospinning. Taking advantages of the hydrophobic/hydrophilic asymmetric wettability and directional wicking of Janus fibrous membrane, sweat/moisture can be driven from skin to the external environment directionally. What’s more, the oriented fiber structure enhances both the solar reflectance (90.8%) and human body infrared radiation (HBIR) emittance (97.4%), which allows cooling down the temperature obviously. Compared with the traditional cotton fabric, the Janus fibrous membrane has excellent passive radiative cooling performance that a dramatic drop in temperature about 20°C can be achieved in outdoor environment. Such novel strategy provides a new and effective way to enhance the efficiency of PWTM.

Abstract:Thermal management of textiles requires local microclimate control over heat and wet dissipation to create a comfortable thermal-wet environment at the interface of the human body and clothing. Herein, we design a fabric capable of both sweat- and cooling-management using a knitted fabric featuring a bilayer structure consisting of hydrophobic polyethylene terephthalate and hydrophilic cellulose fibers to simultaneously achieve high infrared (IR) transmittance and good thermal-wet comfort. The IR transmission of this cooling textile increased by ~ twofold in the dry state and ~ eightfold in the wet state compared to conventional cotton fabric. When the porosity changes from 10 to 47% with the comparison of conventional cotton fabric and our cooling textile, the heat flux is increased from 74.4 to 152.3 W/cm2. The cooling effect of the cooling fabric is 105% greater than that of commercial cotton fabric, which displays a better thermal management capacity for personal cooling. This bilayer design controls fast moisture transfer from inside out and provides thermal management, demonstrating high impact not only for garments, but also for other systems requiring heat regulation, such as buildings, which could mitigate energy demand and ultimately contribute to the relief of global energy and climate issues.

Abstract:In a human skin-fibrous fabric-external environment, fibrous materials, as the "second skin" of the human body, provide comfort against the wet and heat effectively. Fibrous materials protect human health and guarantee work efficiency in various outdoor or inner scenes. Personal wet-thermal management based on fibrous materials can regulate comfort in a facile manner with low or zero energy consumption, which has become a potential development area. However, realizing synergistic management of the wet and heat effectively and conveniently is a challenge in the development and production of fibrous materials. We designed and fabricated a Janus fibrous membrane composed of 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (TMSPMA)-modified hydrophobic cotton gauze and electrospun carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-doped cellulose acetate (CA) hydrophilic fibrous membrane. Taking advantage of asymmetric wettability along its thickness direction, the Janus fibrous membrane, acting as a "liquid diode", could transport sweat/moisture from human skin to the external environment unidirectionally, which endowed a dry surface on human skin, avoiding "stickiness", and realizing wet management. Doped CNTs had good photothermal-conversion capacity, so the Janus membrane exhibited excellent heating capacity for passive radiation, so excellent synergistic wet-thermal management was obtained. The Janus membrane could be a candidate for diverse applications of fibrous membranes. Our data provide new ideas for the design and fabrication of fibrous membranes with remarkable wet-thermal management.
Sweat Pore‐Inspired Functional Nanofiber Fabrics for Sweat Management and Simultaneous Detection

Abstract:Inspired by the phenomenon of perspiration from sweat pores, a nanofiber membrane with a structure resembling sweat pore‐like arrays is designed to facilitate directional sweat transport. The channels imitating sweat pores enable an exceptionally rapid transport speed of 240 g s−1 m−2, while the surrounding region effectively prevents the backflow of sweat. Additionally, a smartphone‐based colorimetric analysis system is integrated for simultaneous detection of biomarkers. Functional fabric with directional sweat transport and simultaneous sweat detection is highly desirable in daily life due to its crucial role in ensuring exercise comfort and promoting health. Herein, the inspiration is drawn from both the perspiration function of sweat pores and the backflow prevention feature of the surrounding solid skin to develop bioinspired hydrophobic nanofiber fabric. When combined with commercial cotton, this fabric enables rapid discharge of sweat through the sweat pore‐like channels at an ultrafast speed of 240 g s−1 m−2, while effectively preventing backflow around these channels to ensure highly efficient personal drying. The performance of the bioinspired nanofiber fabric surpasses that of five commercially available moisture‐wicking fabrics by effectively guiding liquid transport while minimizing residual moisture accumulation on the inner side. Furthermore, a colorimetric analysis system is integrated into the bioinspired nanofiber fabric, which facilitates convenient sampling of sweat samples and detection of biomarkers in sweat such as chloride ion, calcium ion, and pH level. This innovative design based on the concept of sweat pores opens up new possibilities for developing intelligent fabrics, electronic skins, and point‐of‐care devices.

Abstract:Artificial skins reproducing properties of human skin are emerging and significant for study in various areas, such as robotics, medicine, and textiles. Perspiration, as one of the most imperative thermoregulation functions of human skin, is gaining increasing attention, but how to realize ideal artificial skin for perspiration simulation remains challenging. Here, an integrated 3D hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity design is proposed for artificial sweating skin (i-TRANS). Based on normal fibrous wicking materials, the selective surface modification with gradient of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) creates hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity contrast in both lateral and vertical directions. With the additional help of bottom hydrophilic Nylon 6 nanofibers, the constructed i-TRANS is able to transport "sweat" directionally without trapping undesired excess water and attain uniform "secretion" of sweat droplets on the top surface, decently mimicking human skin perspiration situation. This fairly comparable simulation not only presents new insights for replicating skin properties, but also provides proper in vitro testing platforms for perspiration-relevant research, greatly avoiding unwanted interference from the "skin" layer. In addition, the facile, fast, and cost-effective fabrication approach and versatile usage of i-TRANS can further facilitate its application.
Bioinspired Multilayered Knitted Fabric with Directional Water Transport and Collection for Personal Sweat Management

Abstract:Effective sweat management fabric for sportswear facilitates sweat removal from the skin and elevates the comfort for human. However, when the body is in a strong hot and humid environment or after strenuous exercise, the sweat management fabric will be totally wetted and saturated quickly. As a result, excess sweat cannot be absorbed effectively by the garment, which creates obvious stickiness and heaviness. In this paper, a directional water transport and collection multilayered knitted fabric (DWTCF) is prepared by plasma pretreatment technology and screen coating. The treelike water transport network inspired from nature is designed in order to drive the liquid flow along the channels. By surface modification, branched hydrophilic flow paths are fabricated, and other regions are hydrophobic. As a demonstration, DWTCF has been injected with water to observe the liquid transport behavior. During the experiment, 76.7% liquid is collected by DWTCF, but there is just 0.06% collected by an ordinary knitted fabric. The weight increase of the ordinary fabric is 555.4% larger than that of DWTCF. Specifically, DWTCF utilizes the wetting and pressure-gradient-induced interfacial tension as well as the gravitational effect to facilitate the fluid motion along the hydrophilic channel, in addition to the capillarity present in the fabric structure. This study provides a new idea to develop directional water transport and collection fabric to solve the moisture absorption saturation problem of the fabric, especially for conditions requiring intense sweating.

Abstract:Perspiration evaporation plays an indispensable role in human body heat dissipation. However, conventional textiles show limited perspiration management capability in moderate/profuse perspiration scenarios, i.e. low evaporation ability, ineffective evaporative cooling effect, and resultant human body dehydration and electrolyte disorder. Here, we propose a novel concept of integrated cooling (i-Cool) textile of heat conduction and sweat transportation for personal perspiration management based on unique functional structure design. By integrating heat conductive pathways and water transport channels decently, this textile not only shows the capability of liquid water wicking, but also exhibits superior evaporation rate than traditional textiles. Furthermore, compared with cotton, about 2.8 $^\circ$C cooling effect causing less than one third amount of dehydration has also been demonstrated on the artificial sweating skin platform with feedback control loop simulating human body perspiration situation. Moreover, the practical application feasibility of the i-Cool textile design principles has been validated as well. Owing to its exceptional personal perspiration management performance in liquid water wicking, fast evaporation, efficient cooling effect and reduced human body dehydration/electrolyte loss, we expect this i-Cool textile provides promising design guidelines for next-generation personal perspiration management textile.

Multi-bioinspired Janus-shedding fabric: One-way sweat transport and rapid sweat removal for improved personal moisture management

Abstract:In recent years, Janus fabrics that can effectively facilitate personal moisture management have received great attention. However, they are still limited in sweat shedding issue of their superhydrophilic outer surface. Here, inspired by the lotus leaf and Namib Desert beetles, we propose a Janus-shedding fabric with superhydrophilic/hydrophobic patterns and asymmetric wetting property. Through femtosecond-laser microfabrication , we successfully construct superhydrophilic/hydrophobic patterns on the outside surface of Janus fabrics. The method prevents the usage of toxic chemical reagent, thus is completely environmentally-friendly. The as-prepared Janus-shedding fabrics possess one-way liquid transport property. More importantly, the fabrics can achieve rapid liquid/sweat removal on their hydrophilic outer surfaces. The liquid shedding mechanism can be explained that the hydrophilic/hydrophobic patterns on the outer fabric surface can create less surface tension of water which can only fix small volume of water. Moreover, they can maintain human body temperature 3.2 °C lower than covered with pristine cotton fabrics. This work provides new insights for the design and fabrication of advanced smart fabrics with both sweat transport and removal property for satisfying the growing demands of personal comfort.

Abstract:Fabrics designed for personal sweat management, capable of efficiently transporting sweat away from the skin, are highly sought after for enhancing thermal comfort and conserving energy. However, the fabrication processes for these functional garments require intricate physical and chemical modifications, resulting in poor durability and limited suitability for mass production. In this study, a “skin-like” self-pumping fabric, consisting of hydrophobic polyester coils and hydrophilic microfiber polyester coils arranged on a bi-layer knitting fabric, is presented. This configuration allows for unidirectional wicking of sweat away from the skin. The accumulative one-way transport index increased to 717.18% when spandex filaments were introduced into the polyester fabric, which was greater than that of the pristine polyester fabric (393.71%). This exceptional property is achieved by creating differential capillary effects across a predominant combination of microfiber polyester and ordinary hydrophobic polyester. In addition to functional clothing, this “skin-like” self-pumping fabric has great potential for various applications, including industrial textiles, medical wound dressings, geotechnical engineering, and device diaphragms. Overall, this work presents an effective design to achieve large-scale manufacturing of personal sweat management fabrics, which is expected to guide material design for future innovations in functional textiles.
Biomimetic Superwetting Fabric for Evaporation-Induced Body Sweat and Heat Management and Electricity Generation

Abstract:Solar optothermal evaporation of water possesses the potential for thermal regulation and electricity generation, which are desirable for regulating body perspiration and heat as well as improving electrical output and strain sensing. However, ordinary fabrics exhibit poor evaporation capacity and antifouling performance due to limited adsorption capacity and internal hydrophilicity. Moreover, conventional evaporation-driven generators show a low power supply without widely practical use due to limited and fluctuating evaporation rates. Herein, an antifouling cooling fabric with an evaporation-driven electricity performance is obtained by constructing Janus channels on the superomniphobic fabric. Sweat can be easily eliminated from inside to outside through Janus channels by efficient evaporation, and the green liquid metal ink (CGM/LMP-rGO@PPy) cotton fabric shows a thermal conductivity of 0.18 W m-1 K-1, suggesting a comfortable dry and cooling sense. Meanwhile, the fabric can stably output a potential of 302.20 mV when seawater flows through the ionic channels at an evaporation rate of 1.58 mL h-1 with one sun power density. In addition, the multifunctional fabric demonstrates strain sensing at high electrical conductivity for body motion monitoring. This work would offer a prospect for intelligent textile construction and energy harvesting by water evaporation.

Abstract:The development of smart textiles with thermal/moisture regulation is crucial for outdoor activities and healthcare applications. However, incorporating dynamic adaptive thermal management into conventional fabrics to provide consistent comfort remains a significant challenge. Inspired by the ingenious stomata of plant leaves, a novel Janus-type cotton fabric is fabricated by covalently linking shape memory polymer (SMP) on the surfaces of cotton fibers via the combination of the “grafting from” strategy and the “mist polymerization” methodology. This unique coating induces yarns to dynamically twist in response to temperature, switching the pore apertures in the fabric and allowing for adaptive adjustment of both heat dissipation capability and moisture permeability. The resulting fabrics provide effective thermal insulation at low temperatures, while demonstrating an enhanced cooling effect at high temperatures. Meanwhile, the asymmetrical distribution of SMP across the fabric enables unidirectional water transport, improving sweat removal and cooling. Additionally, the excellent biocompatibility and fabric flexibility allow for comfortable garment fabrication. This work provides novel insights into the field of self-adaptive thermal regulation, demonstrating promising potential for smart textile applications.

Abstract:Personal thermal management can effectively manage the skin microenvironment, improve human comfort, and reduce energy consumption. In personal thermal-management technology, owing to the high latent heat of water evaporation in wet-response textiles, heat- and moisture-transfer coexist and interact with each other. In the last few years, with rapid advances in materials science and innovative polymers, humidity-sensitive textiles have been developed for personal thermal management. However, a large gap exists between the conceptual laboratory-scale design and actual textile. This paper reviews moisture-responsive textiles based on flap opening and closing, those based on yarn/fiber deformation, and sweat-evaporation regulation based on textile design for personal thermoregulation, and discusses the corresponding mechanisms and research progress. Finally, the existing engineering and scientific limitations and future developments have been discussed to resolve the existing issues and accelerate the practical application of moisture-responsive textiles and related technologies. Fouling‐Proof Cooling (FP‐Cool) Fabric Hybrid with Enhanced Sweat‐Elimination and Heat‐Dissipation for Personal Thermal Regulation

Abstract:A fouling‐proof cooling (FP‐Cool) fabric that integrates with oil/water‐repellent and excellent passive cooling capacities is proposed by constructing superoleophobic Janus channels on heat‐conductive enhanced superomniphobic fabric. The FP‐Cool fabric preserves 40% higher thermal conductivity and over 50% higher evaporation rate than conventional fabrics. Moreover, the FP‐Cool keeps its anti‐fouling and sweat‐wicking/evaporation properties even after 3000 cycles of abrasion test. Passive cooling fabric that facilitates sweat‐wicking and evaporation is highly desirable for promoting human body's thermal comfort and reducing energy consumption. However, highly hydrophilic sweat‐wicking fabric fails to repel external fouling due to the contradiction between hydrophilicity and lyophobicity. Moreover, conventional passive cooling fabrics show limited evaporation capacity when they reach the adsorption limit in intense perspiration scenarios. Herein, a fouling‐proof cooling (FP‐Cool) fabric with an interactive functional structure design for highly‐efficient personal thermal regulation is proposed by constructing spatially distributed superoleophobic Janus channels on an optimized heat conductive superomniphobic fabric. The dominant superomniphobicity and superoleophobic Janus feature endow the outer FP‐Cool fabric with durable performance (up to 3000 cycles' abrasion) to repel oil/water‐based contaminations. The Janus channels rapidly pull sweat out of the inner fabric for efficient evaporation, ensuring a dry sense of skin. The FP‐Cool fabric preserves 40% higher thermal conductivity, and over 50% higher evaporation rate than conventional fabrics. In the sweat evaporation test, the FP‐Cool fabric shows up to 100% reduction in sweat gain ratio to cotton fabric. The concept would have implications for intelligent textiles design, and the synthesis strategy can be applied in various applications such as oil‐water separation and microfluidics control.
