Abstract:Bleaching events associated with climate change are increasing worldwide, being a major threat to tropical coral reefs. Nonetheless, the indirect impacts promoted by the bleaching of organisms hosting photosynthetic endosymbionts, such as those impacting trophic interactions, have received considerably less attention by the scientific community. Bleaching significantly affects the nutritional quality of bleached organisms. The consequences promoted by such shifts remain largely overlooked, namely on specialized predators that have evolved to prey upon organisms hosting photosynthetic endosymbionts and benefit nutritionally, either directly or indirectly, from the available pool of photosynthates. In the present study, we advocate the use of the model predator–prey pair featuring the stenophagous nudibranch sea slug Berghia stephanieae that preys upon the photosymbiotic glass anemone Exaiptasia diaphana to study the impacts of bleaching on trophic interactions. These model organisms are already used in other research fields, and one may benefit from knowledge available on their physiology, omics, and culture protocols under controlled laboratory conditions. Moreover, B. stephanieae can thrive on either photosymbiotic or aposymbiotic (bleached) glass anemones, which can be easily maintained over long periods in the laboratory (unlike photosymbiotic corals). As such, one can investigate if and how nutritional shifts induced by bleaching impact highly specialized predators (stenophagous species), as well as if and how such effects cascade over consecutive generations. Overall, by using this model predator–prey pair one can start to truly unravel the trophic effects of bleaching events impacting coral reef communities, as well as their prevalence over time.

Abstract:Climate change is dramatically changing ecosystem composition and productivity, leading scientists to consider the best approaches to map natural resistance and foster ecosystem resilience in the face of these changes. Here we present results from a large-scale experimental assessment of coral bleaching resistance, a critical trait for coral population persistence as oceans warm, in 221 colonies of the coral Acropora hyacinthus across 37 reefs in Palau. We find that bleaching resistant individuals inhabit most reefs but are found more often in warmer microhabitats. Our survey also found wide variation in symbiont concentration among colonies, and that colonies with lower symbiont load tended to be more bleaching resistant. By contrast, our data show that low symbiont load comes at the cost of lower growth rate, a tradeoff that may operate widely among corals across environments. Corals with high bleaching resistance have been suggested as a source for habitat restoration or selective breeding in order to increase coral reef resilience to climate change. Our maps show where these resilience corals can be found, but the existence of tradeoffs with heat resistance may suggest caution in unilateral use of this one trait in restoration.

Abstract:Coral microbiomes are critical to holobiont health and functioning, but the stability of host–microbial interactions is fragile, easily shifting from eubiosis to dysbiosis. The heat-induced breakdown of the symbiosis between the host and its dinoflagellate algae (that is, “bleaching”), is one of the most devastating outcomes for reef ecosystems. Yet, bleaching tolerance has been observed in some coral species. This review provides an overview of the holobiont’s diversity, explores coral thermal tolerance in relation to their associated microorganisms, discusses the hypothesis of adaptive dysbiosis as a mechanism of environmental adaptation, mentions potential solutions to mitigate bleaching, and suggests new research avenues. More specifically, we define coral bleaching as the succession of three holobiont stages, where the microbiota can (i) maintain essential functions for holobiont homeostasis during stress and/or (ii) act as a buffer to mitigate bleaching by favoring the recruitment of thermally tolerant Symbiodiniaceae species (adaptive dysbiosis), and where (iii) environmental stressors exceed the buffering capacity of both microbial and dinoflagellate partners leading to coral death.

Coral long-term recovery after bleaching: implications for sexual reproduction and physiology

Abstract:This study examined the long-term impacts of coral bleaching on the reproduction and physiology of , a dominant reef-building coral in Hawaiʻi. We monitored bleached and non-bleached colonies during and after a natural coral bleaching event in 2014 and analyzed reproductive traits and transcriptomic signatures eight months later. Our study shows that non-bleached and bleached colonies successfully produced gametes. Colonies that bleached had smaller oocytes, and development was slower than in colonies that did not bleach. Corals with different vulnerabilities to bleaching exhibited distinct transcriptomic responses eight months after a bleaching event. Those more prone to bleaching showed suppression of transcripts associated with sperm motility, calcification, and immunity. We found distinct transcriptomic signatures between fringing and patch reefs, suggesting local adaptation and/or acclimatization. To conserve coral reefs and better understand how they will be affected by future heat stress, we need to track which colonies survive and examine how their physiological and reproductive processes are impacted in the short- and long-term. This is critical as consecutive bleaching events become more frequent, and corals have less time to recover. Our study provides valuable molecular and reproductive data that can be used for conservation and management purposes. This information can help us identify signs of coral vulnerability and resilience to bleaching, project how future bleaching events will affect coral reproduction, determine which traits are most at risk, and assess which sites are more likely to be compromised.

Abstract:Why does coral bleaching occur regularly, at a cost to the coral host? Here, we use a theoretical model to explore the possibility that coral bleaching is a mechanism for their obligate, algal symbionts to infect the next generation of hosts. We show that under this model, shifts towards more bleaching‐tolerant symbioses may not be a result of climate adaptation, but rather demographic changes in coral populations. Coral bleaching, the stress‐induced breakdown of coral‐algal symbiosis, threatens reefs globally. Paradoxically, despite adverse fitness effects, corals bleach annually, even outside of abnormal temperatures. This generally occurs shortly after the once‐per‐year mass coral spawning. Here, we propose a hypothesis linking annual coral bleaching and the transmission of symbionts to the next generation of coral hosts. We developed a dynamic model with two symbiont growth strategies, and found that high sexual recruitment and low adult coral survivorship and growth favour bleaching susceptibility, while the reverse promotes bleaching resilience. Otherwise, unexplained trends in the Indo‐Pacific align with our hypothesis, where reefs and coral taxa exhibiting higher recruitment are more bleaching susceptible. The results from our model caution against interpreting potential shifts towards more bleaching‐resistant symbionts as evidence of climate adaptation—we predict such a shift could also occur in declining systems experiencing low recruitment rates, a common scenario on today's reefs.

Community composition and functional differences of symbiotic bacteria in healthy and blenching coral

Abstract:In order to assess the influence of bleaching on coral (Pocillopora damicornis) symbiotic microbial communities and functions,microbial structure and functional diversity were evaluated using OTU analysis and BIOLOG Ecoplates method.The results showed that Chao Ⅰ index was significantly lower in bleaching individuals than the healthy ones (P＜0.05).Among the microbial communities (genus level),Synechococcus was the dominant population (more than 50％) in the experimental groups and the controls,and not found the significant difference between the two status.However,some significant differences have observed.Pelagibacter,Puniceispirillum,Coraliomargarita and Photobacterium were abundant in healthy individuals,whereas Actinomarina,Blastopirellula and some pathogenic bacteria(like Vibrio,Pseudospirillum,Alteromonas and Coxiella)were enrichment in bleaching coral.Personal analysis shows that the temperature and nutrients (nitrate and phosphate) were the most correlated environmental factors with the species composition.Functional analysis using average well color development (AWCD) showed that the order of carbon source utilization in healthy group was carboxylic acids ＞ amino acids ＞ amphiphiles carbohydrate ＞ polymers＞ amine.Whereas the sugars,amino acids and amines were the preferred carbon sources in bleaching group.The different utilization ability of carboxylic acid and sugar result in carbon metabolism change between the two groups.To the nitrogen source,both of the groups dominated by inorganic nitrogen,but the bleaching group showed certain ability to utilize organic peptide.Inorganic phosphorus was the main phosphorus source in both groups and it has the priority to be use.Compared with the healthy groups,the bleaching individuals decrease some ability to consumption organic polyphosphates.Taken together,this work showed that the bleaching event reduced coral symbiotic microbial diversity and changed the metabolic potential to C,N,and P source.Bleaching event had a significant impact on coral symbiotic microbial communities and functional activity.

Abstract:Thermal bleaching, or the loss of symbiotic algae that provide most energetic resources for the coral host, is an increasing threat to reefs worldwide and is projected to worsen with climate change. While bleaching is a well-recognized threat, the impact on the process of reproduction in bleaching survivors is not well resolved, despite being central to coral resilience. Montipora capitata can survive bleaching while completing a full gametogenic cycle, offering an ideal system to study gametogenic resilience and physiological tradeoffs. We experimentally bleached fragments of M. capitata colonies and followed their gametogenesis and physiological responses for 10 months (six time points). All bleached colonies produced gametes at the same time as controls, suggesting that reproductive processes were energetically prioritized. However, proteomic analysis revealed tradeoffs and delays in activating key physiological processes earlier in gametogenesis in areas such as skeletal growth and reproductive hormone synthesis. Tradeoffs during the gametogenic cycle, likely a direct response to thermal bleaching, resulted in smaller oocytes from bleached colonies, potentially indicating decreased transfer of parental resources to gametes. While gametogenesis is likely to continue in this species, it is unknown how the fecundity, synchrony of spawning, viability and success of future offspring may be impacted by future bleaching events.

Abstract:Ocean warming is negatively impacting coral reef ecosystems and considerable effort is currently invested in projecting coral reef futures under 21st century climate change. A limiting factor in these projections is lack of quantitative data on the thermal thresholds of different reef communities, due in large part to spatial and temporal gaps in bleaching observations. Here we apply a coral bleaching proxy, skeletal stress bands, to reconstruct the history of bleaching on eight coral reefs in the central equatorial Pacific (CEP) and use this information to constrain the thermal thresholds of their coral communities. First, three genera of massive corals collected on both Pacific and Caribbean reefs are used to derive a calibration between the proportion of corals that form stress bands during a bleaching event, and the total observed bleaching incidence in the community of mixed coral taxa. The correlation is highly significant, indicating that stress bands in massive corals reflect community-level bleaching severity (R2 = 0.945, p b½) at which 50% of the coral community bleached. Our analysis reveals a unique non-linear thermal response curve for each reef. The most thermally tolerant reefs in the study (Jarvis and Kanton Islands) experienced 50% bleaching at seven to nine times more thermal stress than did the least resistant reef in the study (Maiana Island). An exploration of the potential drivers of thermal tolerance revealed a strong correlation between b½ and the history of thermal stress events in each reef system. Thermal tolerance was also correlated with concentrations of dissolved inorganic nitrate in the water column and with estimates of coral energetic reserve.

Decadal demographic shifts and size-dependent disturbance responses of corals in a subtropical warming hotspot

Abstract:Long-term demographic studies at biogeographic transition zones can elucidate how body size mediates disturbance responses. Focusing on subtropical reefs in eastern Australia, we examine trends in the size-structure of corals with contrasting life-histories and zoogeographies surrounding the 2016 coral bleaching event (2010–2019) to determine their resilience and recovery capacity. We document demographic shifts, with disproportionate declines in the number of small corals and long-term persistence of larger corals. The incidence of bleaching ( Pocillopora , Turbinaria ) and partial mortality ( Acropora, Pocillopora ) increased with coral size, and bleached corals had greater risk of partial mortality. While endemic Pocillopora experienced marked declines, decadal stability of Turbinaria despite bleaching, coupled with abundance increase and bleaching resistance in Acropora indicate remarkable resilience of these taxa in the subtropics. Declines in the number of small corals and variable associations with environmental drivers indicate bottlenecks to recovery mediated by inhibitory effects of thermal extremes for Pocillopora (heat stress) and Acropora (heat and cold stress), and stimulatory effects of chlorophyll- a for Turbinaria . Although our study reveals signs of resilience, it foreshadows the vulnerability of subtropical corals to changing disturbance regimes that include marine heatwaves. Disparity in population dynamics suggest that subtropical reefs are ecologically distinct from tropical coral reefs.

Abstract:Corals' endosymbiotic algae (Symbiodiniaceae) supply much of the energetic demands of the host, and some symbionts, such as Durusdinium spp., may confer higher thermal tolerance than others. However, there may be physiological tradeoffs during non-bleaching periods or across environmental gradients. The common Hawaiian reef-building coral, Montipora capitata , hosts the symbionts Cladocopium C31 and/or Durusdinium glynnii . Here, we measured growth of these holobionts over two months to test whether the higher heat tolerance of D. glynnii involved a tradeoff of lower growth, which could impact survivorship and competition for space on the reef. Additionally, we tested whether any such tradeoffs were modulated by light, which is a major driver of the ecological distribution of these symbionts in Kāneʻohe Bay. During the first month, when water temperatures were warmer (median 25.5 °C), there was no effect of symbiont on growth. However, over the cooler second month (median 23.4 °C), C31-dominated corals grew up to 77% faster than D. glynnii -dominated corals, and this growth advantage increased in higher light treatments (up to a daily light integral of 3.8 mol m −2 d −1 , corresponding to 3.8–6.4 m depth). This advantage may explain why C31-dominated colonies are more prevalent at most depths; however, their increasing advantage at higher light levels is not reflected in the shallowest parts of Kāneʻohe Bay, where D. glynnii -dominated colonies become more prevalent. This may indicate that in these warmer surface waters, D. glynnii' s higher heat tolerance outweighs the growth advantage that would otherwise favor C31 during the cooler parts of the year, providing a net ecological benefit. As oceans continue to warm, understanding how symbionts and the environment mediate coral performance outcomes will help predict reef futures and inform conservation interventions where coral stocks are selected for specific traits or symbionts.

Abstract:The current rapid climate warming is expected to cause an ocean temperature increase of 3°C–5°C by 2100, leading to deoxygenated and acidified tropical seas. Without mitigation measures, the total loss of tropical corals is inevitable. Already, one‐third of tropical reefs are considered permanently lost. Coral bleaching initiated by the loss of symbionts, the photosynthetic zooxanthellae, is the main process whereby corals respond to thermal stress, followed by recovery. However, increased thermal stress and frequency of bleaching have caused widespread coral recovery failure. Zooxantheallae of the genus Symbiodinium are considered the thermally vulnerable part of the coral symbiosis. In recent decades, warming has displaced genotypes of lower thermal resilience to subtropical latitudes; few genotypes of higher temperature tolerance remain abundant in tropical seas, but these will not withstand warming predictions either. Interestingly, high temperatures in the Red Sea have selected for exceptionally heat‐resistant coral genotypes and for the highest known thermal resilience in endemic zooxanthellae at the same time. Actions to overcome the coral bleaching crisis have been proposed by combining coral ecophysiology and mass culturing of thermally resilient Red Sea symbionts for naturalisation to the global tropical ocean, including restoration of collapsed reefs using corals with thermally resilient symbiont genotypes.

Abstract:Coral reefs rely upon the highly optimized coral–Symbiodiniaceae symbiosis, making them sensitive to environmental change and susceptible to anthropogenic stress. Coral bleaching is predominantly attributed to photo-oxidative stress, yet nutrient availability and metabolism underpin the stability of symbioses. Recent studies link symbiont proliferation under nutrient enrichment to bleaching; however, the interactions between nutrients and symbiotic stability are nuanced. Here, we demonstrate how bleaching is regulated by the forms and ratios of available nutrients and their impacts on autotrophic carbon metabolism, rather than algal symbiont growth. By extension, historical nutrient conditions mediate host–symbiont compatibility and bleaching tolerance over proximate and evolutionary timescales. Abstract:Mass thermal bleaching events are a primary threat to coral reefs, yet the sublethal impacts, particularly on energetics and reproduction, are poorly characterized. Given that the persistence of coral populations is contingent upon the reproduction of individuals that survive disturbances, there is an urgent need to understand the sublethal effects of bleaching on reproductive output to accurately predict coral recovery rates. In 2019, the French Polynesian island of Mo'orea experienced a severe mass bleaching event accompanied by widespread coral mortality. At the most heavily impacted sites, we observed Acropora hyacinthus individuals that were resistant to bleaching, alongside colonies that bleached but showed signs of symbiont recovery shortly after the bleaching event. We collected fragments from A. hyacinthus colonies five months post-bleaching and, using energetic assays and histological measurements, examined the physiological and reproductive consequences of these two distinct heat stress responses. Despite healthy appearances in both resistant and recovered corals, we found that recovered colonies had significantly reduced energy reserves compared to resistant colonies. In addition, we detected compound effects of stress on reproduction: recovered colonies displayed both a lower probability of containing gametes and lower fecundity per polyp. Our results indicate that bleaching inflicts an energetic constraint on the concurrent re-accumulation of energy reserves and development of reproductive material, with decreased reproductive potential of survivors possibly hampering overall reef resilience. These findings highlight the presence of intraspecific responses to bleaching and the importance of considering multiple trajectories for individual species when predicting population recovery following disturbance.
Resilience in a time of stress: revealing the molecular underpinnings of coral survival following thermal bleaching events

Abstract:Coral bleaching events from thermal stress are increasing globally in duration, frequency, and intensity. Bleaching occurs when a coral’s algal symbionts are expelled, resulting in a loss of color. Some coral colonies survive bleaching, reacquire their symbionts and recover. In this study, we experimentally bleached colonies to examine molecular and physiological signatures of intrinsic differences between corals that recover (resilient) compared to those that die (susceptible). All colonies were collected from the same bay and monitored for eight months post-bleaching to identify specific colonies exhibiting long-term resilience and survival. Using an integrated systems-biology approach that included quantitative mass spectrometry-based proteomics, 16S rRNA of the microbiome, total lipids, symbiont density and diversity, we explored molecular-level mechanisms of tolerance in pre- and post-bleached colonies and found biomarkers of resilience that can confidently identify resilient and susceptible corals before thermal-induced bleaching events. Prior to thermal stress, resilient corals were characterized by a more diverse microbiome and increased abundances of proteins involved in multiple carbon and nitrogen acquisition strategies, symbiont retention and acquisition, and pathogen resistance. Susceptible corals had early signs of symbiont rejection and had resorted to utilizing urea uptake pathways for carbon and nitrogen. Further, molecular signatures identified prior to bleaching were amplified after bleaching, suggesting these pathways may be deterministic in a colony’s fate. Our results have important implications for the future of reefs, revealing molecular factors necessary for survival through thermally-induced bleaching events and providing diagnostic biomarkers for coral reef management.

Importance of depth and temperature variability as drivers of coral symbiont composition despite a mass bleaching event

Abstract:Coral reefs are iconic examples of climate change impacts because climate-induced heat stress causes the breakdown of the coral-algal symbiosis leading to a spectacular loss of color, termed 'coral bleaching'. To examine the fine-scale dynamics of this process, we re-sampled 600 individually marked Montipora capitata colonies from across Kāne'ohe Bay, Hawai'i and compared the algal symbiont composition before and after the 2019 bleaching event. The relative proportion of the heat-tolerant symbiont Durusdinium in corals increased in most parts of the bay following the bleaching event. Despite this widespread increase in abundance of Durusdinium, the overall algal symbiont community composition was largely unchanged, and hydrodynamically defined regions of the bay retained their distinct pre-bleaching compositions. We explain ~ 21% of the total variation, of which depth and temperature variability were the most significant environmental drivers of Symbiodiniaceae community composition by site regardless of bleaching intensity or change in relative proportion of Durusdinium. We hypothesize that the plasticity of symbiont composition in corals may be constrained to adaptively match the long-term environmental conditions surrounding the holobiont, despite an individual coral's stress and bleaching response.

Abstract:Mutualistic organisms can be particularly susceptible to climate change stress, as their survivorship is often limited by the most vulnerable partner. However, symbiotic plasticity can also help organisms in changing environments by expanding their realized niche space. Coral-algal (Symbiodinium spp.) symbiosis exemplifies this dichotomy: the partnership is highly susceptible to 'bleaching' (stress-induced symbiosis breakdown), but stress-tolerant symbionts can also sometimes mitigate bleaching. Here, we investigate the role of diverse and mutable symbiotic partnerships in increasing corals' ability to thrive in high temperature conditions. We conducted repeat bleaching and recovery experiments on the coral Montastraea cavernosa, and used quantitative PCR and chlorophyll fluorometry to assess the structure and function of Symbiodinium communities within coral hosts. During an initial heat exposure (32 °C for 10 days), corals hosting only stress-sensitive symbionts (Symbiodinium C3) bleached, but recovered (at either 24 °C or 29 °C) with predominantly (>90%) stress-tolerant symbionts (Symbiodinium D1a), which were not detected before bleaching (either due to absence or extreme low abundance). When a second heat stress (also 32 °C for 10 days) was applied 3 months later, corals that previously bleached and were now dominated by D1a Symbiodinium experienced less photodamage and symbiont loss compared to control corals that had not been previously bleached, and were therefore still dominated by Symbiodinium C3. Additional corals that were initially bleached without heat by a herbicide (DCMU, at 24 °C) also recovered predominantly with D1a symbionts, and similarly lost fewer symbionts during subsequent thermal stress. Increased thermotolerance was also not observed in C3-dominated corals that were acclimated for 3 months to warmer temperatures (29 °C) before heat stress. These findings indicate that increased thermotolerance post-bleaching resulted from symbiont community composition changes, not prior heat exposure. Moreover, initially undetectable D1a symbionts became dominant only after bleaching, and were critical to corals' resilience after stress and resistance to future stress.

Abstract:Coral reef restoration is an attractive tool for the management of degraded reefs; however, conventional restoration approaches will not be effective under climate change. More proactive restoration approaches must integrate future environmental conditions into project design to ensure long-term viability of restored corals during worsening bleaching events. Corals exist along a continuum of stress-tolerant phenotypes that can be leveraged to enhance the thermal resilience of reefs through selective propagation of heat-tolerant colonies. Several strategies for selecting thermally tolerant stock are currently available and range broadly in scalability, cost, reproducibility, and specificity. Different components of the coral holobiont have different utility to practitioners as diagnostics and drivers of long-term phenotypes, so selection strategies can be tailored to the resources and goals of individual projects. There are numerous unknowns and potential trade-offs to consider, but we argue that a focus on thermal tolerance is critical because corals that do not survive bleaching cannot contribute to future reef communities at all. Selective propagation uses extant corals and can be practically incorporated into existing restoration frameworks, putting researchers in a position to perform empirical tests and field trials now while there is still a window to act.

Abstract:As mass coral bleaching events become more frequent, it is increasingly important to elucidate the factors underlying coral susceptibility and survival. We measured photosynthesis, respiration, and O 2 concentration at the coral tissue surface, Symbiodiniaceae genotypes, and energy metabolic enzyme activities in Agaricia agaricites and Orbicella franksi throughout experimentally-induced thermal bleaching (+3 °C). A. agaricites colonies started to bleach two days into the thermal treatment and were fully bleached between Days 19–31. In contrast, O. franksi colonies only started to bleach on Day 12 and five colonies fully bleached between Days 24–38 while the remining three colonies took up 55 days. Both species experienced decreased photosynthesis and respiration rates as bleaching progressed. As a result, daytime O 2 concentration at the coral surface shifted from hyperoxia in unbleached corals to normoxia in partially bleached corals, and to near hypoxia in fully bleached corals. Additionally, nighttime tissue surface O 2 concentration shifted from hypoxia to normoxia, likely resulting from decreased symbiotic algae density, respiration, and photosynthates that fuel coral aerobic respiration. Genetic profiling of internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) revealed differences in Symbiodiniaceae clade proportions between control and bleached colonies. Activity levels of energy metabolic enzymes did not significantly vary between control and bleached A. agaricites , but malate dehydrogenase and strombine dehydrogenase activities were significantly higher in bleached O. franksi colonies compared to controls. These differences were driven by the three O. franksi colonies that took the longest to bleach and contained >98 % Durusdinium sp. D1. The shifts in O 2 dynamics within the microhabitat of bleached corals may have important implications for the metabolism of the coral holobiont while the changes in Symbiodiniaceae ITS2 profile and the upregulation of energy metabolic enzymes identify a potential factor contributing to bleaching dynamics.

Abstract:The distribution of symbiotic scleractinian corals is driven, in part, by light availability, as host energy demands are partially met through translocation of photosynthate. Physiological plasticity in response to environmental conditions, such as light, enables the expansion of resilient phenotypes in the face of changing environmental conditions. Here we compared the physiology, morphology, and taxonomy of the host and endosymbionts of individual Madracis pharensis corals exposed to dramatically different light conditions based on colony orientation on the surface of a shipwreck at 30 m depth in the Bay of Haifa, Israel. We found significant differences in symbiont species consortia, photophysiology, and stable isotopes, suggesting that these corals can adjust multiple aspects of host and symbiont physiology in response to light availability. These results highlight the potential of corals to switch to a predominantly heterotrophic diet when light availability and/or symbiont densities are too low to sustain sufficient photosynthesis, which may provide resilience for corals in the face of climate change.

Abstract:Cnidarians may dominate benthic communities, as in the case of coral reefs that foster biodiversity and provide important ecosystem services. Polyps may feed by predating mesozooplantkon and large motile prey, but many species further obtain autotrophic nutrients from photosymbiosis. Anthropogenic disturbance, such as the rise of seawater temperature and turbidity, can lead to the loss of symbionts, causing bleaching. Prolonged periods of bleaching can induce mortality events over vast areas. Heterotrophy may allow bleached cnidarians to survive for long periods of time. We tested the reinforcement of heterotrophic feeding of bleached polyps of Exaiptasia diaphana fed with both small zooplantkon and large prey, in order to evaluate if heterotrophy allows this species to compensate the reduction of autotrophy. Conversely to expected, heterotrophy was higher in unbleached polyps (+54% mesozooplankton prey and +11% large prey). The increase of heterotrophic intake may not be always used as a strategy to compensate autotrophic depletion in bleached polyps. Such a resilience strategy might be more species-specific than expected.
