Abstract:Multiple stimuli-responsive fluorescent materials have gained increasing attention for their fundamental investigation and intelligent applications. In this work, we report design and synthesis of a novel polyamic acid bearing oligoaniline, triphenylamine, and fluorene groups, which served as sensitive units and fluorescence emission unit, respectively. The resulting polymer exhibits multiple stimuli-responsive fluorescence switching behavior triggered by redox species, pH, electrochemical, and pressure stimuli. Every fluorescence switching mechanism upon each stimulus was studied in detail. The interactions and energy transfer between sensitive units and emission unit are largely responsible for this fascinating fluorescent switching behavior. This work provides a deep understanding of the optical switching essence upon these stimuli, opening the way for the development of new fluorescent sensing applications.

Abstract:A series of triphenylamine (TPA) derivatives with various substituent groups were prepared and showed different absorption and fluorescence characteristics due to the substituent effect. On account of the existence of pyridine units, these TPA derivatives exhibited acid-induced tunable multicolor fluorescence emission including white light emission. In addition, acid-induced fluorescence regulation of these compounds has been also realized in the solid state, which enable them to be successfully constructed the stimuli-responsive fluorescent films and fluorescent inks for inkjet printing.

Abstract:Two multi‐stimuli‐responsive compounds incorporating triazole and triphenylamine, namely, TPA‐Tz1 and TPA‐Tz2, have been synthesised. Both compounds exhibit solvatochromism and reversible acidochromism. In addition, TPA‐Tz1 also shows mechanochromism. A detailed study on the stimuli‐responsive behaviour has been performed. The development of multi‐stimuli‐responsive (MSR) materials is a tempting yet intriguing challenge due to the absence of a defined design approach. In this study, we designed and synthesised two compounds based on triphenylamine, namely, TPA‐Tz1 and TPA‐Tz2. The photoluminescent investigations reveal the MSR behaviour of both compounds. TPA‐Tz1 shows reversible mechanochromism with a blue‐shifted emission due to changes in intermolecular interactions. Furthermore, both compounds exhibit solvatochromism in solvents of varying polarity. Detailed studies suggest that solvatochromism in TPA‐Tz1 can be attributed to twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT), while in TPA‐Tz2, it is due to intramolecular charge transfer (ICT). Additionally, both compounds display acidochromic properties in solution as well as in the solid state due to the protonation of the triazole ring. All changes in emissions are corroborated through theoretical calculations. The results provide insights into the intricate interplay of molecular interactions and structural rearrangements that contribute to the compound's multifaceted responsiveness.

Abstract:Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) is a unique photo-physical phenomenon and has become an emerging and hot research area. With the enthusiastic efforts paid by researchers, hundreds of AIE-active luminogens (AIEgens) have been generated but heterocyclic AIEgens are rarely reported. Recently, we enriched the family of AIEgens and reported a pyrazine-based AIEgen of tetraphenylpyrazine (TPP), which could be facilely functionalized by a post-synthetic strategy. In this work, we further expanded the TPP-based AIE system by covalently attaching one, two or four electron-donating triphenylamine moieties to the TPP core via Suzuki coupling, and TPP-TPA, TPP-2TPA and TPP-4TPA were produced, respectively. Thanks to their donor-pi-acceptor structures, these luminogens exhibit multifunctional properties, such as excellent thermal stability (up to 504 degrees C), large molar absorptivity, bright emission in the solid state (quantum yields up to 35.2%), solvatochromism, and high two-photon absorption cross-sections (up to 480 GM). Furthermore, using TPP-TPA as the emitting layer, a triple-layer device was fabricated and a turn-on voltage, maximum luminance, current efficiency, power efficiency, and external quantum efficiency of 3.7 V, 17 459 cd m(-2), 5.49 cd A(-1), 3.18 lm W-1 and 2.88% were realized, respectively. These results indicate a huge potential to develop high-tech applications based on these TPP-based AIEgens.

Abstract:Ammonia with the three hydrogens substituted by phenyls is known as triphenylamine (TPA), and is one of the most useful compounds because of its vast practical applications. Chemists have produced thousands of TPA derivatives to date. Because of its biocompatibility and structural features, it has been widely used in the fields of molecular recognition, molecular imaging, materials chemistry, and also in biology and medical science. Its strong electron-donating ability encourages scientists to produce different types of probes for molecular recognition. This review is based on recent developments and advances in TPA-based small molecular fluorescent probes within the time period 2010-2021. This extensive review may expedite improvements in more advanced fluorescent probes for vast and stimulating applications in the future.

Abstract:Charge-transfer (CT) state is becoming a useful excited state to design next-generation luminescence materials for high-performance organic light-emitting diode (OLED). However, strong CT state usually causes serious decrease in photoluminescence (PL) efficiency due to the small overlap between HOMO and LUMO. In order to harvest both high exciton utilization and high PL efficiency in fluorescent OLEDs, figuring out the strategy of fine modification of CT component in excited state through structural modulation is important. In this work, four donor–acceptor structure triphenylamine (TPA) - acridine (AC) isomers (TPA-9AC, TPA-1AC, TPA-2AC and TPA-3AC) were designed and synthesized to investigate structure-property relationship between isomerization effect and excited state properties. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and solvatochromic absorption, emission and photoluminescence decay spectra are carried out for the deep understanding of their emissive state character. The four isomers exhibit gradually increased PL efficiency from low-polarity hexane to medium-polarity tetrahydrofuran (THF), which could be assigned to the formation of hybridized local and charge-transfer (HLCT) states and effectively suppressed non-radiative transition arised from acridine in medium-polarity solvents. Among four isomers, TPA-3AC achieved the best EL performance, due to the proper LE and CT compositions in the emissive state, demonstrating that isomerization of donor and acceptor functional moieties is an effective approach for structural modification for high-efficiency fluorescent OLED emitters.

Abstract:Fluorescent hyperbranched polymers (FHBPs), which combine the versatile fluorescent property with unique characteristics of hyperbranched architecture, are desirable candidates for stimulus responsive materials. This review demonstrates the structure and environment-dependent emission behaviors of a series of FHBPs. AEE active FHBPs showing opposite performance to ACQ effect are used to sensitively detect explosives and a superamplification effect is found. Specially designed FHBPs can complex with metal ions, leading to fluorescence turn-off due to complex quenching effect. The protonation of amino-containing FHBPs exhibits pH-dependent fluorescence responses to solution acidity. Some FHBPs containing responsive moieties are photo- and thermo-sensitive, and show potential applications as smart materials.

Abstract:The development of mechanochromic fluorophors with high-brightness, solid-state fluorescence is very significant and challenging. Herein, highly solid-state emissive triphenylamine, carbazole and tetraphenylethylene-functionalized benzothiadiazole derivatives were developed. These compounds showed remarkable aggregation-induced emission and solvatochromic fluorescence characteristics. Furthermore, these fluorogenic compounds also displayed different mechanically triggering fluorescence responses.

Abstract:Based on a facile electronic modulation strategy, multiple colored and dynamic room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) is successfully generated from the corresponding terphenyl amine derivatives. The RTP emission mechanism of organic compounds is deeply explored. Based on the inspiring photoluminescence properties, they are also well applied to temperature sensors and multiple information encryption. In recent years, numerous long‐lived organic room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) systems have been well explored. However, the RTP emission mechanism of organic compounds is still not very clear. The structures of terphenyl amines (TPAs) are simple and their chromophores are definite, which makes them suitable for exploring the emission mechanism of organic RTP materials. A series of TPA derivatives are synthesized in this contribution. Excitingly, benefiting from a facile electronic characteristic modulation strategy, RTP emissions generated from TPAs are achieved successfully. The theoretical calculation and crystallographic analysis reveal that introducing electron‐donating substitutes is beneficial for the formation of a clear charge separation state and promoting triplet state energy transfer. This is the primary reason for the promotion effects of the electron‐donating substitutes on RTP emission. By varying the substituents and their substitution sites, the afterglow colors as well as the lifetime and efficiency of the resultant TPAs can be facilely tuned. Interestingly, o‐TPA‐OMe shows a temperature‐dependent fluorescence emission. Benefiting from these inspiring photoluminescence performances, these TPA derivatives can be applied in information encryption and temperature sensors.

Abstract:Novel styryl derivatives with triphenylamine as donor and 1, 3, 5-triazine as acceptor were synthesized and characterized with absorption, fluorescence, MS-TOF, 1H NMR and 13C NMR. These molecules show large two-photon absorption (TPA) cross sections and strong two-photon fluorescence. Among them, the tri-branched octupolar molecule has the largest TPA cross section and the strongest two-fluorescence.

Abstract:Triphenylamine based fluorescent dyes TPA-benzimidazole and TPA-benzothiazole have been designed and synthesized. The TPA-benzimidazole chemosensor was tested for a number of metal ions and found to exhibit binding affinity for Fe3+ and Hg2+ in acetonitrile, and the fluorescence quenching was achieved through a PET process. The appearance of an isosbestic point in absorption titrations and Job's plot analysis supported 1:1 stoichiometries for Fe3+ and Hg2+ ions. Laser experiments showed that under transversal pumping with a Q-switched Nd:YAG (355nm) laser in toluene, TPA-benzothiazole exhibits efficient and stable amplified spontaneous emissions (ASE) at 436nm.

Abstract:We report the synthesis of four A-π-D-π-A' type red-emitting multi-stimuli-responsive organic compounds exhibiting large Stokes shifts and displaying efficient emission in the solid-state (Φ f = 19.6–66.7%). Fine tuning in the photophysical properties was achieved by structural modification, which converted a non-emissive compound to an emissive one. The compounds were sensitive to solvent polarity, displayed reversible acidofluorochromism, and could detect trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) in nanomolar range (51.43–274.84 nM). One of the probes not only displayed turn-on emission enhancement upon addition of H + ions but was also sensitive to primary amines. A detailed mechanism for reversible acidofluorochromism was studied by 1 H NMR, whereas formation of Schiff bases upon treatment with primary amine was confirmed by 1 H NMR and HRMS. In addition to this, compounds also displayed reversible acidofluochromism in solid-state and the paper strips for the detection of TFA were prepared to increase their practical applicability. Further, solid-state emission property was utilized for anti-counterfeiting writing applications.

Abstract:Aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) with photochromic and electroclu-omic properties are promising materials for photoelectric applications. In this paper, one multifunctional molecule, triphenylamine Schiff-base (TPASB), was developed and studied in detail. TPASB revealed to be a luminogen characterized by both twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) and AIE properties. Second, the photochromic and electrochromic performances of TPASB were characterized under ultraviolet (LTV) light irradiation and applied bias respectively, which exhibited accordant color change from yellow to tangerine. Third, the prominent morphology transition of TPASB from NVs (nano-vesicles) to MRs (micro-rods) was observed through self-assembly, rendering the fluorophores befitting for monitoring and visualizing the aggregation process. Last, a liquid-type electrochromic device (ECD) of the molecule was fabricated for electrochemical arid spectroelectrochemical measurements, which gave a high transmittance change (64.2% at 518 nm) and unique UV-shield trait.

Abstract:A series of naphthalimide derivatives (TNP and TNM) were synthesized by incorporating a triphenylamine unit (TPA) into the chromophore of 1,8-naphthalimide. Their steady-state absorption, fluorescence and transient fluorescence were investigated, indicating that there exist efficient Förster-type singlet energy transfer and photo-induced electron transfer (PIET). As a consequence, the fluorescence of TNP and TNM was quenched distinctly, which is mainly arisen from the intramolecular PIET process between the units of TPA and naphthalimide. The fluorescent tuning on and off can be achieved by the stimuli of acid, which will protonate the central nitrogen atom of triphenylamine unit to stop the PIET process. The mechanism can be utilized as the design of fluorescent switching based on the process of fluorescent quenching and recovering.

Abstract:Four triphenylamine or carbazole-based highly emissive solid fluorophores (The maximum quantum yield of 42.43%) of dibenzothiophene sulfones have been successfully prepared and characterized. The solid-state emission behaviors and mechanical stimulus-responsive luminescence characteristics of all these donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) type or donor-π-acceptor-π-donor (D-π-A-π-D) type compounds 1–4 were investigated. Interestingly, these fluorophores 1–4 exhibited various solid-state fluorescent colors involving blue (CIE color coordinates of (0.15, 0.09)), blue-green (CIE color coordinates of (0.17, 0.43)), yellow (CIE color coordinates of (0.41, 0.56)) and brown-yellow (CIE color coordinates of (0.50, 0.50)). Furthermore, these dyes 1–4 also exhibited different mechanofluorochromic behaviors. More specifically, luminogens 1–3 showed bathochromic mechanofluorochromic phenomena. However, luminogen 4 showed distinct-different hypsochromic mechanofluorochromic phenomenon. All these observed mechanochromic emission conversions could be repeated for many cycles. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction and powder X-ray diffraction experiments demonstrated that the mechanofluorochromic behaviors of 1–4 were related to the morphology transformation from crystalline state to amorphous state.

Abstract:In this study, a novel multi-stimulus responsive RGB fluorescent organic molecule, RTPE-NH2, was designed and synthesized based on the combination of aggregation-induced emission tetraphenylethylene (TPE) luminophore and acid-responsive fluorescent molecular switch Rhodamine B. RTPE-NH2 exhibits aggregation-induced emission behavior, as well as UV irradiation-stimulus and acid-stimulus responsive fluorescence properties. It could emit orange-red (R), green(G), and blue(B) light in both solution and PMMA film under 365 nm excitation. The dark through-bond energy transfer (DTBET) mechanism was proposed and supported by control experiments and TD-DFT calculations. The synthesis and application of RTPE-NH2 could accelerate the development of organic smart materials with high sensitivity and excellent optical properties.
Multiple stimuli-responsive and reversible fluorescence switches based on a diethylamino-functionalized tetraphenylethene

Abstract:Tetra(4-(diethylamino)phenyl)ethene (TPE-4N), a new derivative of tetraphenylethene (TPE), is facilely prepared in one step from bis(4-(diethylamino)phenyl)methanone in a good yield of 85%. TPE-4N shows aggregation-induced emission (AIE) with high solid-state fluorescence quantum yields up to 63.5%. It has strong proton capture capability, allowing for reversible fluorescence switching in acidic and basic solutions. A good linear relationship between the emission intensity and the pH value ranging from 4.4 to 6.0 is established. By exposing to hydrochloride vapor, the color of TPE-4N powder is changed from yellow-green to white, accompanied by a fluorescence color change from green to sky-blue. The resulting protonated luminogen (p-TPE-4N) can be readily reverted to TPE-4N by fuming with hot triethylamine vapor. The protonation and deprotonation processes are reversible and can be repeated many times without fatigue in the solid state. In addition, p-TPE-4N exhibits reversible thermochromism between 80-120 degrees C, and reverts to TPE-4N by heating up to 120 degrees C. Multiple stimuli-responsiveness and reversible fluorescence indicate that TPE-4N is a promising candidate for chemical sensing and environmental monitoring.

Abstract:Reversibly switching visible light excited phosphorescence emission by external stimuli is highly challenging. Herein, we report a series of tetrakis(arylthio)benzene derivatives with a D-A structure, exhibiting visible-light excited room-temperature phosphorescence. Significantly, the emission from their crystalline powder state responded to mechanical forces, attributed to alterations in molecular stacking changes, resulting in their phosphorescence color changes. Moreover, the monomer and aggregated phosphorescence transition could be reversibly switched by temperature when doping these molecules into a phase-changing matrix saturated fatty acid (FA) because the FA matrix is transformed between solid and fluid states under different temperatures. In addition, multi-color luminescent materials were also obtained by further introducing triphenylamine dye molecules. Finally, these doping systems exhibited excellent application potential in temperature indication and anti-counterfeiting. This successful design strategy provides a new idea for preparing reversible external stimuli-responsive phosphorescent materials. D-A-type tetrakis(arylthio)benzene derivatives exhibited visible-light excited phosphorescence, mechanical-stimuli responsive phosphorescence in solid and temperature-induced phosphorescence changes in the phase-changing doping state.

Abstract:A phthalazinetrione derivative, 2-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-4-hydroxyphthalazin-1(2H)-one hydrate (TP) was developed based on phthalic acid and 2-hydrazinobenzothiazole in acetic acid (AcOH) solution and obtained corresponding crystal TP-A. The TP-A exhibited colorimetric fluorescence response from yellow to green through fuming with the triethylamine (TEA) vapor, resulting in the crystal structure change to TP-N. TP-A and TP-N exhibited aggregation-induced emission (AIE) in solid state due to the J-aggregation and dimer formation, respectively. And the interconversion of the J-aggregation and dimer by a external TEA/AcOH vapor stimuli successfully and repeatedly realized switching of yellow/green luminescence. In addition, TP-A and TP-N showed similar AIE effect both in aqueous solution and in solid state, and they exhibited different sensing behavior in 100% aqueous solution. TP-A with excellent selectivity and sensitivity could be employed as a fluorescent colorimetric sensor to discriminately identify Zn2+ and Cd2+. TP-N could further fluorescent colorimetric sensing glutathione (GSH). Different aggregation pattern gave different chance for Zn2+/Cd2+.and GSH to respond with the formation of new aggregates through corresponding coordination reaction and addition reaction mechanism. Further, the TP-A and TP-N were applied to detect Zn2+/Cd2+.and GSH in Hela cells.
