Abstract:Repeatable printing of invisible multicolor luminescence patterns with long retention times on transparent substrates is of significant importance, but it remains a formidable challenge. Here, two novel hydrazone-based on/off fluorescent photoswitches with decent emission quantum efficiencies, good reversible photoisomerization properties, and extremely long thermal half-lives, were designed and synthesized. Excitingly, X-ray crystallography data of both Z and E isomers of one hydrazone-based photoswitch were obtained. Multiple emission colors of blue, cyan, green, yellow, and orange can be obtained readily for these two photoswitches upon coordination with various zinc salts. Moreover, the photo-controlled rewritable printing of invisible multicolor images with high resolution was achieved by using these photoswitches. Importantly, the legibility of the printed patterns can last at least over 3 months without detectable emission intensity loss under ambient conditions.
Ionic Microgel Colloidal Crystals: Responsive Chromism in Dual Physical and Chemical Colors for High-End Information Security and Encryption

Abstract:Chromic materials play a decisive and escalating role in information security. However, it is challenging to develop chromic materials for encryption technologies that can hardly be imitated. Inspired by versatile metachrosis in nature, a series of coumarin-based 7-(6-bromohexyloxy)-coumarin microgel colloidal crystals (BrHC MGCC) with multiresponsive chromism are able to be assembled by ionic microgels in poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) solution followed by two cycles of freezing-thawing. The ionic microgels can be finely tailored by in situ quaternization with tunable size under varied temperatures and hydration energies of counterions as well as quenched luminescence under UV irradiation, which endows BrHC MGCC with intriguing chromism in the dual-channel coloration of physical structural color and chemical fluorescent color. Three types of BrHC MGCC exhibit various change ranges in structural coloration and similar quenching in fluorescence emission, which can be utilized for the development of the static-dynamic combined anticounterfeiting system with dual coloration. The information conveyed by the BrHC MGCC array presents dynamic variation versus temperature, while the static information can be only integrally read in both sunlight and a 365 nm UV lamp. The fabrication of a microgel colloidal crystal with dual coloration opens a facile and ecofriendly window for multilevel information security, camouflage, and a cumbersome authentication process.

On-Demand Regulation of Photoreversible Color Switching for Rewritable Paper and Transient Information Encryption

Abstract:The achievement of photoreversible color switching systems (PCSS) has offered great opportunities for fundamental studies and practical applications. However, the development of PCSS that possessing highly reversible cyclability and on-demand regulation of recoloration process remains a grand challenge. Herein, we report a hydrazine-mediated self-doping strategy for the synthesis of alkaline Ti3+ self-doped TiO2–x nanoparticles, enabling the TiO2–x nanoparticles/methylene blue based PCSS with long photoreversible cyclability and rapid color switching rate. The Ti3+ species as internal sacrificial electron donors significantly improve the photoreductive activity of TiO2–x nanoparticles, which results in fast decoloration rate and long cycling number of the PCSS. Simultaneously, the alkaline property of TiO2–x nanoparticles enhances the oxidation kinetics of the PCSS to dramatically accelerate the recoloration rate. Moreover, the PCSS can be integrated elaborately with biodegradable agarose to form flexible color switching films, which exhibit long-waited on-demand regulation of recoloration rate in a wide range. By taking advantage of photoreversible color switching and time-resolved color changing process, we demonstrate their potential application in self-erasing rewritable paper and transient optical information encryption. Abstract:Stimuli-responsive fluorescent materials have recently been developed and employed as fluorescent security inks for applications in the fields of high-level security protection and multi-anticounterfeiting because they can provide extra security features by switching luminescence outputs in response to external stimuli. However, conventional stimuli-responsive fluorescent inks are generally limited to unicolor or dual-color fluorescent response behaviors in monotonous stimuli mode, resulting in being comparatively less effective for advanced anticounterfeiting applications. Herein, we report a new strategy for constructing a dual stimuli-responsive multicolor security ink, which is based on the integration of the near-infrared (NIR) light-responsive orthogonal three-primary-color luminescence properties of upconversion nanoparticles and pH-sensitive color-changing behavior of thymolphthalein dye. Unlike most other invisible security inks, this new dual stimuli-responsive security ink can realize visualization of hidden information. The information recorded by this ink is initially visible under natural light and then spontaneously becomes invisible within several tens of seconds. The feature of disappearance in seconds allows customers to check and correct concealed information before hiding it. In addition, upon pH stimulation, the concealed information can be reversibly interconverted between visible and invisible states. Meanwhile, upon ternary NIR quadrature excitation (808/980/1560 nm), the information can emit intense green, blue, and red fluorescence, respectively. More importantly, the information printed with the security ink exhibits robust stability against various chemical treatments, which demonstrates great potential for practical applications in advanced anticounterfeiting.

Abstract:Inkjet printing of photo-responsive patterns capable of switching between colorless and full-color is regarded as an innovative anticounterfeiting technique with a higher security level. Therefore, colorless inks which can be changed to cyan (C), magenta (M), and yellow (Y) upon photochromism are highly required. Herein, three photochromic (PC) inks C, M, and Y switching between colorless and cyan/magenta/yellow, respectively, have been successfully prepared by dissolving viologen derivatives AV, AEV, and NOV in solvent mixtures of water, ethanol, and ethylene glycol, with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as surfactant. With a mass fraction of 0.5 wt% for SDS, an optimal rheological property with a viscosity of 3.48 mPa·s, a contact angle of 29.4° on poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) substrate, a surface tension of 23.16 mN m −1 , and a Z value of 3.85, is realized for ink C. Under the same conditions, inks M and Y are prepared and display suitable rheological properties for inkjet printing. The films are invisible initially and become colorful upon UV irradiation with no significant decay after 20 repetitive PC switching. Subsequently, various colorful patterns with high resolutions were printed on conventional A4 paper and become visible only after irradiation by a UV lamp. Therefore, these photo-responsive tricolor inks can be used in anticounterfeiting field and two practical examples of a stamp and a personal check with cryptical texts and color information have been demonstrated. Overall, the developed photo-responsive C/M/Y inks can be utilized in flexible, full-color, and large-area printing, providing a novel approach towards innovative anticounterfeiting technology.

Abstract:Optical information storage materials with dual protectiveness of anti-counterfeiting and waterproofing are critical to store information and improve paper utilization in a safe and accurate way. A novel multifunctional material with efficient photo-responsiveness and hydrophobicity was herein developed. Wherein, a system of silver ion (Ag+)/polyoxometalates/polymer was creatively formed as a photochromic layer, achieving different color variations by different contents of Ag+ and UV irradiation doses. This functional surface can maintain colored state for a long time in indoor environments, which is favorable to long-term information storage. It can be quickly blenched within 20 min under a hydrogen peroxide-containing atmosphere, achieving controllability of fading time. In addition, a multifunctional transparent coating formed by PDMS and fine particles composed of ytterbium compound and silica was applied on photochromic layer. This coating rapidly generates dazzling green light under infrared radiation, laying a foundation for the safe transmission of information. Its microstructures effectively capture air in gaps and low surface energy avoids wetting of water, achieving excellent hydrophobicity with a surface contact angle of 152°. In a word, this elaborately designed strategy for information storage via photochromism and dual protection shows enormous application potentials in optical information storage and encryption.

Abstract:It remains a big challenge to develop solid-state stimuli-responsive materials for time-dependent information encryption and inkless erasable printing with long retention times. Herein, a 2D Cu2I2-based MOF with photoresponsive spiropyran (SP) groups orderly installed on its skeleton is developed. The structural isomerization from SP to colored merocyanine (MC) form can be triggered by removing the CH3CN guests. Besides, the degree of structural isomerization and the retention time can be adjusted by controlling the amount of CH3CN guests, exhibiting dynamic photochromic behavior with multicolor states and tunable retention time. Based on these advantages, time-dependent information encryption is successfully achieved. Furthermore, the long retention time (> 72 h) of the MC form under daylight conditions in the CH3CN-removed Cu2I2-based MOF and good repeatability make it promising in various applications, such as temporary calendars, price-cards, billboards, and reusable identity cards. This work provides a novel design strategy to fabricate multi-functional MOF-based smart materials for challenging applications of time-dependent information encryption and inkless erasable printing.

Abstract:Conventional security inks, generally directly printed on the data page surface, are vulnerable to counterfeiters, thereby raising the risk of chemical structural deciphering. In fact, polymer film‐based data pages with customized patterns embedded within polymer matrix, rather than printed on the surface, emerge as a promising solution. Therefore, the key lies in developing fluorophores offering light dose‐controlled fluorescent color inside polymer matrices. Though conventional fluorophores often suffer from photobleaching and uncontrolled photoreactions, disqualifying them for this purpose. Herein we developed a diphenanthridinylfumaronitrile‐based photo‐transformers (trans‐D5) that undergoes photoisomerization and subsequent photocyclization during photopolymerization of the precursor, successively producing cis‐ and cyclo‐D5 with stepwise redshifted solid‐state emissions. The resulting cyclo‐D5 exhibits up to 172 nm emission redshift in rigidifying polymer matrices, while trans‐D5 experiences a slightly blue‐shifted emission (∼28 nm), cis‐D5 undergoes a modest redshift (∼14 nm). The markedly different rigidochromic behaviors of three D5 molecules within polymer matrices enable multicolor photochemical printing with a broad hue ranging from 38 to 10 via an anticlockwise direction in Munsell color space, yielding indecipherable fluorescent patterns in polymer films. Abstract:For data security applications, the use of fluorescent inks has become the most promising approach because of their convenience and low cost. However, traditional fluorescent inks are usually visible either under ambient light or UV light, whereas the improved stimuli-responsive inks are restricted to a single color. For the first time, full-color stimuli-responsive inks for information coding, encryption, and decryption are reported, which rely on the facile preparation and conversion of perovskite quantum dots. The information printed by the halide salt solution is invisible under ambient and UV light but becomes readable under UV light after spraying a unique developer. Besides, the primitive information can be stored for many years, even decades. Even after the decryption process, it still can be stored for at least several weeks. Most importantly, using butyl amine and acetic acid as encryption and decryption reagents, respectively, can switch off/on the luminescence. In this way, the printed information can be encrypted and decrypted, which shows great potential for information security applications.
The Combination of Upconversion Nanoparticles and Perovskite Quantum Dots with Temperature-Dependent Emission Colors for Dual-Mode Anti-Counterfeiting Applications

Abstract:Novel and high-security anti-counterfeiting technology has always been the focus of attention and research. This work proposes a nanocomposite combination of upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) and perovskite quantum dots (PeQDs) to achieve color-adjustable dual-mode luminescence anti-counterfeiting. Firstly, a series of NaGdF4: Yb/Tm UCNPs with different sizes were synthesized, and their thermal-enhanced upconversion luminescence performances were investigated. The upconversion luminescence (UCL) intensity of the samples increases with rising temperature, and the UCL thermal enhancement factor rises as the particle size decreases. This intriguing thermal enhancement phenomenon can be attributed to the mitigation of surface luminescence quenching. Furthermore, CsPbBr3 PeQDs were well adhered to the surfaces and surroundings of the UCNPs. Leveraging energy transfer and the contrasting temperature responses of UCNPs and PeQDs, this nanocomposite was utilized as a dual-mode thermochromic anti-counterfeiting system. As the temperature increases, the color of the composite changes from green to pink under 980 nm excitation, while it displays green to non-luminescence under 365 nm excitation. This new anti-counterfeiting material, with its high security and convenience, has great potential in anti-counterfeiting applications.

Abstract:The security monitoring of valuables is a crucial concern to ensure the stable development of human social business activities, scientific research, production, and daily life. The implementation of security precautions has traditionally involved the mere placement of items in safes. However, the formidable task of ascertaining whether valuables have been compromised during storage remains a significant challenge. Photochromic materials are important intelligent substances that can be employed as a potential candidates for security monitoring. However, previous studies have predominantly focused on achieving prominent photochromism by utilizing specific light sources such as ultraviolet, laser, and X-ray radiation. In light of these existing challenges, a design strategy engaging high entropy is proposed to improve the photochromic performance. By selecting a diverse range of volatile metal elements, the A-site high entropy is realized within the ABO3 perovskite structure, enabling the construction of various defects. This results in the successful realization of the material's sensitive response to sunlight, thereby validating the feasibility of the photochromism boosted by a high entropy strategy. The developed photochromic materials for intrusion indication demonstrate the capability to operate autonomously, making it a crucial component in high-level security monitoring systems and presenting a novel approach toward enhancing security protection in traditional domains. The A-site high entropy is realized within the ABO3 perovskite structure, enabling the construction of various defects. In contrast to conventional materials, the high entropy perovskite materials demonstrate a sensitive response to sunlight in both their photochromic, and luminescent states, facilitating the effortless establishment of a secure intrusion detector through the combination of the photochromic materials with a light-blocking tape. image

Abstract:Developing full-color organic ultralong room temperature phosphorescence (OURTP) materials with continuously variable afterglow emission is of considerable practical importance in diverse optoelectronic applications but remains a formidable challenge. Here, we present an effective strategy for on-demand engineering of afterglow color in water-soluble polymeric systems via efficient phosphorescence Förster resonance energy transfer. Using a blue afterglow emitting water-soluble polymer as host and a series of fluorescent emitters with varied emissive colors as guests, afterglow emission is rationally modulated, conferring the full-color afterglow emission ranging from blue to red and even white with ultralong lifetimes up to 4.2 s and photoluminescence quantum yields of 36%.These water-soluble multicolor-emitting polymeric afterglow systems can function as OURTP security inks, and multilevel information encryption was successfully established by RGB-based multicolor security printing. These results present important guidance in developing high-performance afterglow polymers with on-demand color tuning ability for remarkable optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:The anti-counterfeiting label with multiple fluorescent colors plays an important role in information encryption and decryption. It is urgent to develop new materials for improving the security level of secret information. In this study, novel lanthanide (Ln)-based nanopapers (Ln-nanopapers, Ln = Eu and Tb) were prepared by Ln metal–organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) self-assembling on 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyl-1-oxide (TEMPO) cellulose nanofibrils (tCNFs). Due to ligand energy absorption, hetero Ln-nanopapers exhibited high efficiency and brightness in characteristic luminescence and color tuning. Based on the adjusting energy absorption mode of hetero Ln-nanopapers, we selectively lit up Eu 3+ (red emission) and Tb 3+ (green emission) or [Eu 3+ and Tb 3+ ] (yellow emission), respectively. And, using the characteristic absorption mode of Ln 3+ ions can effectively avoid the influence of fluorescent brightener on anti-counterfeiting performance. In addition, the characteristic absorption and emission spectra of Ln 3+ ions were obtained by using the reversible energy level transition ( 7 F J ↔ 5 D k ) of Ln 3+ ions, which could be used for mirror-like encryption. The Ln-nanopapers realizes the advanced anti-counterfeiting with adjustable color, selective lighting and visual recognition.

Abstract:Traditional static optical anti-counterfeiting technology can only output a single emission signal, which is easy to replicate and difficult to meet the needs in current high-tech fields. Multi-level stimuli-responsive luminescent materials with internal logical relationship can improve the degree of anti-counterfeiting and resist against the flood of counterfeiting. In this work, we propose to use force and acid dual stimuli to restrict the dissipation path of photogenerated free radicals, which further lead to the radical-actuated photochromic luminescence (PCL) performance. Based on this strategy, a zero-dimensional (0D) dinuclear zinc complex Zn 2 (9-AC) 4 (IM) 2 ( 1 ) with blue luminescent properties (450 nm) was designed and synthesized. The interaction between 9-AC and IM (as 9-AC/IM exciplex) can be cut off by force-induced rearrangement of structural units in the spatial dimensions or acid-induced protonation of 9-AC, achieving the luminescent transformation from 9-AC/IM exciplex (447 nm) to 9-AC/9-AC excimer (480 nm) or 9-HAC (485 nm). At the same time, the PCL performance was activated and the emission intensity quenching rate increased from 4.77 % to 93.86 % or 44.93 % under UV light irradiation, respectively. The solid-state ultraviolet–visible absorption spectra, electron paramagnetic resonance spectra and theoretical calculation confirmed that the activation of PCL performance is due to the fact that the 9-AC• radicals are more difficult to dissipate upon force- or acid-induced stimuli. Combining mechanochromic luminescence (MCL) and PCL, a dynamic anti-counterfeiting quick response (QR) code with multi-level and fast-responsive logic sequence have been designed, which are promising for the application in time-resolved information encryption. This work provides an effective strategy to construct multi-level stimuli-responsive luminescence as novel anti-counterfeiting materials by changing the photogenerated free radical dissipation pathway to activate PCL properties.

Abstract:A drive for anti-counterfeiting technology has attracted considerable interests in developing nanomaterials with a wide range of colors and tunable optical properties in solid state. Herein, with a series of conjugated polymers and based on the host-guest driven self-assembly strategy, a color-tunable supramolecular nanoparticle-based system is reported, in which full-color as well as white fluorescence can be achieved. Moreover, this fluorescent platform exhibits reversible photoswitching between quenching and emission by noncovalently introducing a photoresponsive energy acceptor. In addition, an efficient chemiluminescence system with high intensity can also be obtained in a similar manner by introducing a H2O2-responsive energy donor. Significantly, chemiluminescence is advantageous over fluorescence since there is no need for external light irradiation. More importantly, these acceptor/donor-loaded supramolecular nanoparticles exhibit fluorescence/chemiluminescence modulation ability in both solution and solid state. Therefore, this supramolecular system can be employed as fluorescent security inks for anti-counterfeiting strategies and provide a proof-of-principle application.
Upconversion Luminescence via Anion Exchange in Perovskite Quantum Dots for Anticounterfeiting Inkjet Printing

Abstract:Lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) and cesium lead halide perovskite quantum dots (PeQDs) are highly compatible with each other: UCNPs produce anti-Stokes upconversion luminescence (UCL) under near-infrared (NIR) excitation and the emissive profiles of PeQDs can be conveniently tuned by varying the halide composition ratio. Therefore, in this study, UCNPs and PeQDs are mixed together, producing colorful UCL under 980 nm laser excitation. In addition, ZnI2 is used to vary the halide composition ratio of PeQDs and manipulate UCL in situ, thus adding more flexibility in UCL regulation. Finally, based on the above-mentioned discussion, a double-encrypted anticounterfeiting pattern is generated via sequentially printing ZnI2 solution and UCNP suspension on an A4 paper. Using PeQDs as the decrypting reagent, under the NIR excitation and decryption channel, the hidden information can be fully decrypted. The combination of UCNPs and PeQDs greatly expands the upconversion possibility, offers more feasibility in UCL regulation, and further promotes the practical applications.

Abstract:Counterfeiting has been a major worldwide governmental and economical. Photoresponsive agents are important materials efficient anticounterfeiting inks. As compared with organic compounds, inorganic agents have better properties. Photoresponsive lanthanide‐doped aluminate is a significant luminescent agent. Counterfeiting of banknotes, important documents, and branded goods continues to be a major worldwide problem for governments, businesses, and consumers. This problem has serious financial, security, and health implications. Due to their stability for printing on various substrates, the photochromic anticounterfeiting inks have received important interest. There have been various photochromic agents, such as polymer nanoparticles, quantum and carbon dots, and organic and inorganic fluorophores and luminophores, which have been broadly used for antiforging applications. In comparison to organic agents, inorganic photochromic materials have better stability under reversible/long‐term light illumination. Recently, the remarkable optical characteristics and chemical stability of photoluminescent and photochromic agents have led to their extensive usage anticounterfeiting products. There have been also several strategies to tackle the rising problem of counterfeiting. Both of solvent‐based and water‐based inks have been developed for security encoding purposes. Additionally, the printing methods, including screen printing, labeling, stamping, inkjet printing, and handwriting, that have been used to apply anticounterfeiting inks onto various surfaces are discussed. The limitations of photoluminescent and photochromic agents and the potential for their future preparation to combat counterfeiting were discussed. This review would benefit academic researchers and industrial developers who are interested in the area of security printing.

Abstract:Advanced anti-counterfeiting labels have aroused an intensive interest in packaging industry to avoid the serious issue of counterfeit. However, the preparation and cost of the existing labels associated with the drawbacks, including the complex and high-cost equipment, limit the protection of the authenticity of goods. Herein, we developed a series of anti-counterfeiting labels based on multicolor upconversion micro-particles (UCMPs) inks via straightforward and low-cost solutions, including spin-coating, stamping and screen printing. The UCMPs were synthesized through a facile hydrothermal process and displayed tunable red (R), green (G) and blue (B) color by doping different lanthanide ions, which are Er3+/Tm3+, Yb3+/Er3+ and Yb3+/Tm3+ in NaYF4 hosts, respectively. The optimal UCMPs inks were deposited on a flexible polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate to obtain transparent anti-counterfeiting labels possessing higher transmittance, stronger upconversion fluorescence intensity and good photostability. Under ambient conditions, the patterns and films were transparent, but could exhibit multicolor light under 980 nm laser excitation. They can be used as anti-counterfeiting labels for die-cutting packages to further elevate the security of goods. The tunable and designable transparent anti-counterfeiting labels based on RGB UCMPs inks exhibit the merits of low-cost, easy-manufacture and versatility, underlying the practical application in the field of anti-counterfeiting.
