Abstract:The carbon burial and greenhouse gas emissions of lakes are pivotal in the global carbon cycle to offset or accelerate global warming. However, their balance or the magnitude of anthropogenic increase of carbon burial remains uncertain in global lakes. Here, we quantified the carbon sink dynamics and the sink-source balance in global lakes with effect size metrics, that is, the log-response ratio of organic carbon burial between post-1950 and pre-1900 periods and the carbon balance ratio between carbon burial and greenhouse gas emissions, respectively. The organic carbon burial ratios revealed an average increase of 2.44 times in carbon burial rates during the Anthropocene, while the carbon balance ratios were negative in 82.68% of lakes, indicating that most lakes had lower burial rates than emission rates and acted as carbon sources rather than carbon sinks. The organic carbon burial ratios exhibited a significantly decreasing latitudinal trend and were mainly influenced by its trophic state with the explained variation of 44.79%. They were also indirectly influenced by climate, lake morphometry and catchment properties through their interactions with the lake’s trophic state. The carbon balance ratios however showed nonsignificant latitudinal trend. They were primarily affected by lake catchment properties with the explained variation of 26.21% and were also indirectly affected by climate variables via the interactions with catchment properties. Overall, our study highlights that human activities such as lake eutrophication and catchment changes have altered the carbon sink and source in global lakes during the Anthropocene, and are essential drivers for future evaluations of lake carbon budgets.

Human-caused increases in organic carbon burial in plateau lakes: The response to warming effect

Abstract:The patterns of organic carbon sequestration in lakes, along with their temporal dynamics, have profound implications for assessing the strength of terrestrial carbon sinks and the global carbon budget. The complexity of fluctuations in organic carbon burial in freshwater lake basins, along with the intricate interactions among various controlling factors over time, remains challenging to comprehend. By utilizing data on the organic carbon burial of sedimentary cores from twelve plateau lakes in a gradient of urbanization, this study employed a rigorous methodology to quantify the factors and origins that contribute to lacustrine carbon sequestration. The findings indicate that the rate of Total Organic Carbon (TOC) accumulation in lakes in highly urbanized areas has significantly surpassed that in areas with minimal urbanization since 1985. This trend of divergence has persisted for more than four decades. During the period from 1958 to 2008, soil nutrient characteristics (29.576 %) and human impact (16.684 %) were the major factors regulating the organic carbon burial in plateau lakes. Human pressures indirectly impact carbon sequestration through earth-surface processes in the lake basin, causing carbon burial to lag behind environmental indicators (e.g., δ13C and C/N) by approximately 5 years. Meanwhile, the carbon sequestration efficiency of plateau lakes shows a positive feedback to climatic warming with intensified urbanization, primarily regulated through the impacts on lake basin environments. The results will further enhance our understanding of the response of the lake ecosystem carbon cycle to anthropogenic influences.

Abstract:Human activities have increased reactive nitrogen (Nr) input to terrestrial ecosystems compared with the pre-industrial era. However, the fate of such Nr input remains uncertain, leading to missing sink of the global nitrogen budget. By synthesizing records of Nr burial in sediments from 303 lakes worldwide, here we show that 9.6 +/- 1.1 Tg N year(-1) (Tg = 10(12) g) accumulated in inland water sediments from 2000 to 2010, accounting for 3%-5% of global Nr input to the land from combined natural and anthropogenic pathways. The recent Nr burial flux doubles pre-industrial estimates, and Nr burial rate significantly increases with global increases in human population and air temperature. Sediment ratios of C:N decrease after 1950 while N:P ratios increase over time due to increasingly elevated Nr burial and other related processes in lakes. These findings imply that Nr burial in lakes is overlooked as an important global sink of Nr input to terrestrial ecosystems.

Abstract:Inland waters are sites of active carbon (C) processing and transport along the land to ocean aquatic continuum (LOAC) that need to be accounted for closing the global C budget1,2. However, monitoring data are lacking and do not extend back as far as few decades, limiting our comprehension of the LOAC C cycle for the last centuries. Lake sediments provide a key archive for assessing C transport and transformation that occurs in lake catchments. Here, the analysis of large numbers of samples was performed on 420 lakes sediment records of the world to assess C burial rates and sources during the last 300 years. C and N (organic and mineral forms) on discrete samples were analyzed using a Variomax elemental analyzer to assess total C sequestration by lakes, C sources, and long-term changes in the contribution of allochtonous vs autochtonous sources to C transfers in lake-watersheds. Continuous sediment records were generated using core scanners (i.e. micro-XRF) and computed tomography to provide near-annual trends on terrigenous elements, here used as proxies of allochtonous sources (e.g. Al, Ti, K, Fe), and Mn:Fe ratio to infer past oxygen conditions3. Our results suggest that establishing a morphology-relevant lake typology that better characterises the types and distribution of oxygen conditions and terrigenous supplies across our sites is therefore the first step in providing a more robust evidence base for explaining the spatial-temporal variation in lake C burial rates.

Abstract:Carbon sequestration by sediments and vegetated marine systems contributes to atmospheric carbon drawdown, but little empirical evidence is available to help separate the effects of climate change and other anthropogenic activities on carbon burial over centennial timescales. We used marine sediment organic carbon to determine the role of historic climate variability and human habitation in carbon burial over the past 5,071 years. There was centennial‐scale sensitivity of carbon supply and burial to climatic variability, with Little Ice Age cooling causing an abrupt ecosystem shift and an increase in marine carbon contributions compared to terrestrial carbon. Although land use changes during the late 1800s did not cause marked alteration in average carbon burial, they did lead to marked increases in the spatial variability of carbon burial. Thus, while carbon burial by vegetated systems is expected to increase with projected climate warming over the coming century, ecosystem restructuring caused by abrupt climate change may produce unexpected change in carbon burial whose variability is also modulated by land use change.

Abstract:Global carbon dioxide (CO2) evasion from inland waters (rivers, lakes, and reservoirs) and carbon (C) export from land to oceans constitute critical terms in the global C budget. However, the magnitudes, spatiotemporal patterns, and underlying mechanisms of these fluxes are poorly constrained. Here, we used a coupled terrestrial–aquatic model to assess how multiple changes in climate, land use, atmospheric CO2 concentration, nitrogen (N) deposition, N fertilizer and manure applications have affected global CO2 evasion and riverine C export along the terrestrial‐aquatic continuum. We estimate that terrestrial C loadings, riverine C export, and CO2 evasion in the preindustrial period (1800s) were 1,820 ± 507 (mean ± standard deviation), 765 ± 132, and 841 ± 190 Tg C yr−1, respectively. During 1800–2019, multifactorial global changes caused an increase of 25% (461 Tg C yr−1) in terrestrial C loadings, reaching 2,281 Tg C yr−1 in the 2010s, with 23% (104 Tg C yr−1) of this increase exported to the ocean and 59% (273 Tg C yr−1) being emitted to the atmosphere. Our results showed that global inland water recycles and exports nearly half of the net land C sink into the atmosphere and oceans, highlighting the important role of inland waters in the global C balance, an amount that should be taken into account in future C budgets. Our analysis supports the view that a major feature of the global C cycle–the transfer from land to ocean–has undergone a dramatic change over the last two centuries as a result of human activities.

Abstract:Lakes and lake sediments are significant components of the global carbon (C) cycle, and may store very large amounts of organic matter. Carbon sequestration in lakes is subject to substantial temporal and spatial variation and may be strongly affected by human activities. Here, we report accumulation rates (AR) of organic C (OC), total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorous (TP), and investigate their responses to anthropogenic impact over the past 150 years by analyzing 62 sediment cores from 11 shallow lakes in the Songnen Plain, northeast China. From the center of each of the lakes, we selected one master core for age determination by 210Pb and 137Cs radioisotopes. The contents of OC, TN, TP, dry bulk density and mass specific magnetic susceptibility were then determined for all cores. The regional OCAR, TNAR and TPAR up-scaling from the multiple cores yielded mean values of 51.63 ± 15.13, 2.50 ± 0.98, and 0.90 ± 0.21 g m-2 yr-1, respectively. Nutrient AR in the studied lakes increased by a factor of approximately 2 × from the middle 19th century to the 1950s, and approximately 5 × after the 1950s. Elemental ratios show that the increase in OCAR is mainly the result of C autogenesis from the growth of aquatic plants stimulated by agricultural intensification, including increased chemical fertilizer application and farmland expansion. Significantly enhanced nutrient burial by these lakes after the 1950s resulted from increased anthropogenic impacts in northeast China. More sustainable agricultural practises, including a decrease in P fertilizer use, would result in a lowering of OCAR, TNAR and TPAR in the future.

Abstract:Human activity has fundamentally altered the global phosphorus (P) cycle. Yet our understanding of when and how humans influenced the P cycle has been limited by the scarcity of long-term P sequestration records, particularly outside Europe and North America. Lake sediments provide a unique archive of past P burial rates and allow the human-mediated disruption of the global P cycle to be examined. We compiled the first global-scale and continentally resolved reconstruction of lake-wide Holocene P burial rates using 108 lakes from around the world. In Europe, lake P burial rates started to increase noticeably after ~4000 calendar years before 1950 CE (cal BP), whereas the increase occurred later in China (~2000 cal BP) and in North America (~550 cal BP), which is most likely related to different histories of population growth, land-use and associated soil erosion intensities. Anthropogenic soil erosion explains ~86% of the observed changes in global lake P burial rates in pre-industrial times. We also provide the first long-term estimates of the global lake P sink over the Holocene (~2686 Tg P). We estimate that the global mean lake sediment P sequestration since 1850 CE (100 cal BP) is ~1.54 Tg P yr −1 , representing approximately a six-fold increase above the mean pre-industrial value (~0.24 Tg P yr −1 ; 11,500 to 100 cal BP) and around a ten-fold increase above the Early-Middle Holocene low-disturbance baseline of 0.16 Tg P yr −1 . This study suggests that human activities have been affecting the global P cycle for millennia, with substantial alteration after industrial times (1850 CE).

Abstract:The Holocene, Ahead of Print. Over the last decades, the intensification of anthropogenic activities and associated disturbances on lake watersheds have led to major changes in lakes trophic functioning through accelerated eutrophication. In many lakes, these changes are characterized by an unprecedented increase in organic carbon fluxes, potentially leading to a shift in biogeochemical cycles and in the balance between carbon sequestration and greenhouse gas emissions. Understanding the response of the carbon cycle to natural and anthropogenic environmental changes is becoming a crucial challenge in the context of increasing global pressures. In this study, we reconstructed the changes in the trophic functioning of the benthic and pelagic food web, in response to accelerated eutrophication in four lakes over the last millenium. Changes in carbon pathways in food webs were assessed using stable carbon isotope analysis of chitinous subfossil remains of Daphnia, Bosmina, and Chironomini archived in sedimentary records. Changes in the trophic state were inferred from sedimentary geochemical analysis, including carbon accumulation rates, Chla accumulation rates and carbon-to-nitrogen ratios. Agro-pastoral activities were tracked by analysis of coprophilous ascospores. Results provided by this multi-proxy approach highlight recent disruptions in carbon sources and transfer pathways in lakes food webs. In particular, changes in the carbon isotopic signature of pelagic consumers suggest a recent increase in the use of 13C-depleted carbon sources such as methanogenic or respiration-derived carbon linked to recent changes in trophic state under the intensification of anthropogenic pressures.

Both nutrients and macrophytes regulate organic carbon burial: Insights from high-resolution spatiotemporal records of a large shallow lake (Baiyangdian) in eastern China

Abstract:Both ecological regime shifts and carbon cycling in lakes have been the subject of global debates in recent years. However, the direct linkage between them is poorly understood. Lake Baiyangdian, a representative large shallow lake with the coexistence of a macrophyte-dominated area (MDA) and an algae-dominated area (ADA) in eastern China, allowing better understanding of the relationship between regime shifts and organic carbon (OC) burial in lakes. On the basis of Bayesian isotopic mixing modelling of C/N ratios and δ13C values, the sediment OC is primarily of autochthonous origin. The mean OC burial rate (OCBR) was 39 g C m-2 yr-1 before eutrophication occurred in 1990 and increased approximately 2.7-fold to 106 g C m-2 yr-1 after eutrophication. Partial least squares path modelling revealed that this change can be largely attributed to enhanced primary productivity and rapid burial as a result of intensified human perturbation. In terms of spatial patterns, the OCBR was greater in the MDA than in the ADA, which may be related to the different burial and mineralization processes of debris from macrophytes and algae. It then deduced that a decrease in the OCBR and an increase in the mineralization rate might have occurred after a shift from a macrophyte-dominated state to an algae-dominated state. Our findings highlight that eutrophication generally increases OC burial by enhancing lake primary productivity. However, once nutrient levels reach a critical range, lake ecosystems may shift from a macrophyte-dominated state to an algae-dominated state, which can lead to a significant reduction in the carbon burial capacity of lakes. Therefore, more attention should be given to avoiding shifts in eutrophic lakes, as such shifts can alter carbon cycling.
Anthropogenic control of coupled changes in organic and inorganic carbon burial in karst landscape: Sediment evidence from two lakes of subtropical China

Abstract:Hydrological regulation and land uses are known to alter lake organic carbon stock, while inorganic carbon cycling in karst landscapes may as well be shifted due to its rapid kinetic rate. To date, the synchronous pattern in the variations of sediment organic carbon (TOC) and inorganic carbon (TIC) burial in karst lakes largely remains to be quantified along the gradient of catchment development. Two karst lakes with contrasting nutrient level and water depth from Southwest China, both of which were converted to medium-sized reservoirs in ∼1985, were selected for sediment multi-proxy analyses on the temporal and spatial variation of carbon burial in the last ∼80 years. While hydrological fluctuations were well recorded by the sediment variation of particle size, the gradual decrease in median grain size showed a trend of increasing water depth that is consistent with the damming events for both lakes. Meanwhile, the nutrient variables revealed an acceleration of eutrophication since ∼2000 when a rapid expansion of catchment croplands was documented for both lakes. While diatom assemblage showed a significant response to hydro-climatic fluctuation and nutrients at both lakes, algal production (i.e. chlorophyll and cyanobacterial pigments) significantly increased with eutrophication at both lakes. The TIC content in the mesotrophic Taiping Lake and the TOC content in the eutrophic lake of Sanjiaohai both showed a significant increase with agricultural expansion, however, the contents of TOC in Taiping and of TIC in Sanjiaohai remained relatively stable over time. While a significant increase in the sediment flux with decreasing bulk sediment C:N ratios suggests elevated autochthonous input, the temporal change of TIC and TOC flux showed a significant synchrony at both lakes. Meanwhile, the sediment content and flux of TIC is significantly higher than those of TOC in Taiping Lake with a higher rate of carbon turnover, but lower than those of TOC in Sanjiaohai. Thus, the accumulation of TIC was disproportionally promoted in deep lakes while the burial of TOC is more favorable in eutrophic and shallow lakes. Overall, our sediment evidence highlights that agricultural expansion and hydrological regulation could interact in altering the sediment stock of TIC and TOC, and their synchronous variation in Karst landscapes.

Abstract:Inland waters comprise of rivers, streams, lakes, reservoirs, and ponds, and serve as active processing areas in the global carbon cycle. In total, inland waters emit 4.40 Pg C/year as carbon dioxide and methane, representing 73% of terrestrial carbon entering the systems from land. Anthropogenically driven climate and landscape changes, such as climate warming, precipitation, and land use conversion, are influencing the quantity and quality of terrestrial carbon transported to inland waters, the rates of internal processing in these systems, and its fate of burial, export, or emissions once in inland waters. Inland waters serve as important hydrological connections between the terrestrial landscape and oceans but are often overlooked in global carbon (C) budgets and Earth System Models. Terrestrially derived C entering inland waters from the watershed can be transported to oceans but over 83% is either buried in sediments or emitted to the atmosphere before reaching oceans. Anthropogenic pressures such as climate and landscape changes are altering the magnitude of these C fluxes in inland waters. Here, we synthesize the most recent estimates of C fluxes and the differential contributions across inland waterbody types (rivers, streams, lakes, reservoirs, and ponds), including recent measurements that incorporate improved sampling methods, small waterbodies, and dried areas. Across all inland waters, we report a global C emission estimate of 4.40 Pg C/year (95% confidence interval: 3.95–4.85 Pg C/year), representing a 13% increase from the most recent estimate. We also review the mechanisms by which the most globally widespread anthropogenically driven climate and landscape changes influence inland water C fluxes. The majority of these drivers are expected to influence terrestrial C inputs to inland waters due to alterations in terrestrial C quality and quantity, hydrological pathways, and biogeochemical processing. We recommend four research priorities for the future study of anthropogenic alterations to inland water C fluxes: (1) before‐and‐after measurements of C fluxes associated with climate change events and landscape changes, (2) better quantification of C input from land, (3) improved assessment of spatial coverage and contributions of small inland waterbodies to C fluxes, and (4) integration of dried and drawdown areas to global C flux estimates. Improved measurements of inland water C fluxes and quantification of uncertainty in these estimates will be vital to understanding both terrestrial C losses and the "moving target" of inland water C emissions in response to rapid and complex anthropogenic pressures.

Abstract:Lakes are a crucial component of the global carbon and nitrogen cycle. As a trend of enhanced human activities and climate change, the mechanisms of burial remain poorly understood. In this study, diverse biogeochemical techniques were applied to analyze the temporal variation of organic carbon and nitrogen burial rates in Chaohu Lake. The results showed that burial rates have ranged from 9.39 to 35.87 g C m-2 yr-1 for carbon and from 1.66 to 5.67 g N m-2 yr-1 for nitrogen since the 1860s. The average rates were 19.6 g C m-2 yr-1 and 3.14 g N m-2 yr-1 after the 1970s, which were significantly higher than the rate before the 1970s, showing an increasing trend. The decrease of C/N ratios as well as organic matter δ13C values indicates that the major organic matter source in sediment has been algal production since the 1970s. The increase of δ15N values indicated that the promotion in productivity was stimulated by nutrient input from sewage and agricultural runoff. The burial rates of organic carbon and nitrogen were significantly positively related to socio-economics and temperature, indicating that Chaohu Lake will become an increasing carbon and nitrogen pool under conditions of enhanced human activities and intensive precipitation.
Vegetation structural change since 1981 significantly enhanced the terrestrial carbon sink

Abstract:Satellite observations show that leaf area index (LAI) has increased globally since 1981, but the impact of this vegetation structural change on the global terrestrial carbon cycle has not been systematically evaluated. Through process-based diagnostic ecosystem modeling, we find that the increase in LAI alone was responsible for 12.4% of the accumulated terrestrial carbon sink (95 ± 5 Pg C) from 1981 to 2016, whereas other drivers of CO 2 fertilization, nitrogen deposition, and climate change (temperature, radiation, and precipitation) contributed to 47.0%, 1.1%, and −28.6% of the sink, respectively. The legacy effects of past changes in these drivers prior to 1981 are responsible for the remaining 65.5% of the accumulated sink from 1981 to 2016. These results refine the attribution of the land sink to the various drivers and would help constrain prognostic models that often have large uncertainties in simulating changes in vegetation and their impacts on the global carbon cycle.

Abstract:A substantial amount of the atmospheric carbon taken up on land through photosynthesis and chemical weathering is transported laterally along the aquatic continuum from upland terrestrial ecosystems to the ocean. So far, global carbon budget estimates have implicitly assumed that the transformation and lateral transport of carbon along this aquatic continuum has remained unchanged since pre-industrial times. A synthesis of published work reveals the magnitude of present-day lateral carbon fluxes from land to ocean, and the extent to which human activities have altered these fluxes. We show that anthropogenic perturbation may have increased the flux of carbon to inland waters by as much as 1.0 Pg C yr(-1) since pre-industrial times, mainly owing to enhanced carbon export from soils. Most of this additional carbon input to upstream rivers is either emitted back to the atmosphere as carbon dioxide (similar to 0.4 Pg C yr(-1)) or sequestered in sediments (similar to 0.5 Pg C yr(-1)) along the continuum of freshwater bodies, estuaries and coastal waters, leaving only a perturbation carbon input of similar to 0.1 Pg C yr(-1) to the open ocean. According to our analysis, terrestrial ecosystems store similar to 0.9 Pg C yr(-1) at present, which is in agreement with results from forest inventories but significantly differs from the figure of 1.5 Pg C yr(-1) previously estimated when ignoring changes in lateral carbon fluxes. We suggest that carbon fluxes along the land-ocean aquatic continuum need to be included in global carbon dioxide budgets.
Organic Carbon Burial in a Large, Deep Alpine Lake (southwest China) in Response to Changes in Climate, Land Use and Nutrient Supply over the Past 100 Years

Abstract:Inland waterbodies play an important role in the global carbon cycle, acting both as carbon sources with organic carbon (OC) mineralization and as sinks with OC burial in sediments. Under recent impacts of global warming, anthropogenic land-use change and nutrient supply, however, there is a limited knowledge regarding OC dynamics in sediments of large, deep lakes especially in subtropical alpine regions. Here, we studied the patterns of OC burial and the potential regulating factors using multiple sedimentary proxies and observational records in Lugu Lake (southwest China) over the past similar to 100 years. Comparisons of 15 sediment cores in different areas of the lake reveal similar temporal trends in OC content and other sediment parameters, indicating coherent patterns of whole-lake sedimentary environmental change dominated by watershed human perturbation. Based on C/N ratios and delta C-13(org) analyses, the sediment OC has primarily been autochthonous in source. OC accumulation rates (OCAR) increased during 1880-1980, from similar to 14 to 43 g C m(-2) yr(-1) in a central core (LGS), mainly resulting from elevated primary production under increased phosphorus input and soil erosion. Subsequently, OCAR decreased considerably to similar to 15 g C m(-2) yr(-1), although the phosphorus supply and lake primary productivity remained high. We infer the OCAR decline likely resulted from increased organic matter decomposition and OC mineralization in the water column because of climate warming and lake-water thermal stratification. This phenomenon might mask the positive contribution of primary production to OC burial. Our findings suggest that the commonly observed synergistically positive effects of warming and eutrophication on sediment OC burial may be impaired in deep lakes, which needs further investigations across ecological, climatic and land-use gradients.

Abstract:The efforts to explain the ‘missing sink’ for anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) have included in recent years the role of nitrogen as an important constraint for biospheric carbon fluxes. We used the Nitrogen Carbon Interaction Model (NCIM) to investigate patterns of carbon and nitrogen storage in different compartments of the terrestrial biosphere as a consequence of a rising atmospheric CO2 concentration, in combination with varying levels of nitrogen availability. This model has separate but closely coupled carbon and nitrogen cycles with a focus on soil processes and soil–plant interactions, including an active compartment of soil microorganisms decomposing litter residues and competing with plants for available nitrogen. Biological nitrogen fixation is represented as a function of vegetation nitrogen demand. The model was validated against several global datasets of soil and vegetation carbon and nitrogen pools. Five model experiments were carried out for the modeling periods 1860–2002 and 2002–2100. In these experiments we varied the nitrogen availability using different combinations of biological nitrogen fixation, denitrification, leaching of soluble nitrogen compounds with constant or rising atmospheric CO2 concentrations. Oversupply with nitrogen, in an experiment with nitrogen fixation, but no nitrogen losses, together with constant atmospheric CO2, led to some carbon sequestration in organismic pools, which was nearly compensated by losses of C from soil organic carbon pools. Rising atmospheric CO2 always led to carbon sequestration in the biosphere. Considering an open nitrogen cycle including dynamic nitrogen fixation, and nitrogen losses from denitrification and leaching, the carbon sequestration in the biosphere is of a magnitude comparable to current observation based estimates of the ‘missing sink.’ A fertilization feedback between the carbon and nitrogen cycles occurred in this experiment, which was much stronger than the sum of separate influences of high nitrogen supply and rising atmospheric CO2. The demand‐driven biological nitrogen fixation was mainly responsible for this result. For the modeling period 2002–2100, NCIM predicts continued carbon sequestration in the low range of previously published estimates, combined with a plausible rate of CO2‐driven biological nitrogen fixation and substantial redistribution of nitrogen from soil to plant pools.

Abstract:The lateral transport of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from land to rivers and oceans is a significant but overlooked component of the global carbon cycle. However, there are still large uncertainties in the magnitude and trend of global DOC export fluxes, as well as their response to environmental change. In this study, several simulations were conducted using a developed land surface model that considered riverine DOC transport and anthropogenic disturbance to investigate the terrestrial DOC loading and riverine DOC export, and to quantify the relative contributions of natural and anthropogenic factors over the past four decades (1981-2016). These factors include climate change, nitrogen deposition, land use change, atmospheric CO2 concentration, anthropogenic water regulation, and fertilizer and manure application. Results showed that the average global annual terrestrial DOC loading was about 432.30 ± 53.59 Tg C yr-1, and rivers exported about 209.73 ± 36.58 Tg C yr-1 to oceans over the past four decades. Simultaneously, a significant increase in terrestrial DOC loading and riverine DOC export fluxes (3.36 Tg C yr-2 and 2.99 Tg Cyr-2, p < 0.01) was found, which increased by 26.88 % and 47.02 %, respectively. According to our factorial analysis, the interannual variability in DOC fluxes in most regions was mainly attributed to climate change and contributed more than 60 % of the long-term increase. In addition, rising atmospheric CO2 and land use change amplified the increase in terrestrial DOC loading, with the area dominated by the two factors expanding from 7.94 % in the 1980s to 23.84 % in the 2010s, and riverine DOC export showed a similar pattern, which may be related to the increased soil DOC sources. Anthropogenic water regulation and nitrogen addition have led to a slight increase in DOC fluxes, which should not be ignored, otherwise carbon fluxes may be underestimated.

Abstract:The availability of carbon (C) from high levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2 ) and anthropogenic release of nitrogen (N) is increasing, but these increases are not paralleled by increases in levels of phosphorus (P). The current unstoppable changes in the stoichiometries of C and N relative to P have no historical precedent. We describe changes in P and N fluxes over the last five decades that have led to asymmetrical increases in P and N inputs to the biosphere. We identified widespread and rapid changes in N:P ratios in air, soil, water, and organisms and important consequences to the structure, function, and biodiversity of ecosystems. A mass-balance approach found that the combined limited availability of P and N was likely to reduce C storage by natural ecosystems during the remainder of the 21st Century, and projected crop yields of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment indicated an increase in nutrient deficiency in developing regions if access to P fertilizer is limited. Imbalances of the N:P ratio would likely negatively affect human health, food security, and global economic and geopolitical stability, with feedbacks and synergistic effects on drivers of global environmental change, such as increasing levels of CO2 , climatic warming, and increasing pollution. We summarize potential solutions for avoiding the negative impacts of global imbalances of N:P ratios on the environment, biodiversity, climate change, food security, and human health.
