Abstract:The melting temperature Tm of a solid is generally determined by its solid–liquid transition on being heated at a fixed pressure, usually ambient pressure. It is also determined indirectly by the density n by means of the equation of state. This remains true even for solid helium1, in which quantum effects often lead to unusual properties2. Here, we present experimental evidence to show that for a two-dimensional (2D) solid formed by electrons in a semiconductor sample under a strong perpendicular magnetic field3 (B), Tm is not controlled by n, but effectively by the quantum correlation between the electrons through the Landau level filling factor ν=nh/eB (where h is the Planck constant and e is the electronic charge). Such melting behaviour, different from that of all other known solids (including a classical 2D electron solid at zero magnetic field4), suggests the quantum nature of the magnetic-field-induced electron solid. Moreover, Tm increases with the strength of the sample-dependent disorder that tends to pin the electron solid in place.

Abstract:The melting transition of vortex lattice in type-II superconductors with magnetic field perpendicular to the anisotropy axis is studied in the framework of the elastic theory. It is found that the thermal fluctuations in the two directions transverse to the magnetic field are approximately proportional to each other with the constant, different from the anisotropy parameter, in a wide portion of phase diagram. One can introduce two Lindemann numbers with the ratio determined by the thermal fluctuations to draw a single melting line. The melting line thus obtained fits the experimental phase boundary quite well.

Abstract:The melting transition in anisotropic type-II superconductors has been studied by the Lindemann criterion in the framework of elastic theory. Using two Lindemann numbers for two transverse directions, we find that the single melting transition can be obtained, when the ratio between the two Lindemann numbers reaches special value.

Abstract:In the framework of elastic theory, we study the vortex-lattice melting transitions in magnesium diboride for magnetic fields both parallel and perpendicular to the anisotropy axis. Using the parameters from experiments, the vortex-lattice melting lines in the H–T diagram are located systematically by various groups of Lindemann numbers. It is observed that the theoretical result for the vortex melting with parallel and perpendicular fields agrees well with the experimental data. Therefore, it is suggested that the phenomenological elastic theory is universal to various type-II superconductors, including two- and multi-band superconductors.

Abstract:A sufficiently large perpendicular magnetic field quenches the kinetic (Fermi) energy of an interacting two-dimensional (2D) system of fermions, making them susceptible to the formation of a Wigner solid (WS) phase in which the charged carriers organize themselves in a periodic array in order to minimize their Coulomb repulsion energy. In low-disorder 2D electron systems confined to modulation-doped GaAs heterostructures, signatures of a magnetic-field-induced WS appear at low temperatures and very small Landau level filling factors (ν≃1/5). In dilute GaAs 2D hole systems, on the other hand, thanks to the larger hole effective mass and the ensuing Landau level mixing, the WS forms at relatively higher fillings (ν≃1/3). Here we report our measurements of the fundamental temperature vs filling phase diagram for the 2D holes' WS-liquid thermal melting. Moreover, via changing the 2D hole density, we also probe their Landau level mixing vs filling WS-liquid quantum melting phase diagram. We find our data to be in good agreement with the results of very recent calculations, although intriguing subtleties remain.

Abstract:The capacitance between electrons on the surface of liquid helium and underlying metallic electrodes was measured in a magnetic field. The results show the movement of the helium surface due to a variation of the magnetic field strength across the experimental cell. An analysis of the profile of the helium surface is presented.

Abstract:We study the zero-temperature phase diagram of two-dimensional helium-4 using neural quantum states. Our variational description allows us to address liquid and solid phases using the same functional form as well as exploring possible melting scenarios, for instance via an intermediate hexatic phase. Notably, this is achieved by performing fixed pressure variational Monte Carlo calculations. Within the isobaric ensemble framework, we are able to clearly identify the first-order liquid-solid phase transition. However, in an intermediate region of nearly constant pressure, we find that simulations of $N=30$ atoms continuously transition from liquid to solid, with signatures of a hexatic order coexisting with a small condensate fraction. Calculations for larger systems follow the metastable liquid and solid branches in this transient region. We additionally compute the Rényi-2 entanglement entropy across the liquid-solid phase transition and find a sharp decrease upon freezing.

Abstract:The low frequency ac response of a 2-D electron gas on liquid helium in a magnetic field is analysed in terms of ρxx and ρxy, the components of the magnetoresistivity tensor. The electrons are screened by parallel electrodes and the system forms a 2-D transmission line. The 2-D wave equation is solved numerically for a bounded electron sheet in a rectangular geometry which is excited by one of the electrodes. For ωτ≪ 1, where τ is a relaxation time, heavily damped voltage waves propagate along the transmission line. In a field these waves propagate along the edges of the electron sheet with characteristic decay lengths or 2-D skin depths, parallel and perpendicular to the edges, which depend on ρxx and ρxy. The effects of these skin depths on measurements of the magnetoresistance and ac Hall effect are demonstrated. The relationship to the dc Hall effect and to edge magnetoplasmons is shown. The effects of incomplete screening, density inhomogeneities and edge capacitance are also discussed.

Abstract:The measured melting curve $T_{m}(\nu)$ between the crystal and liquid phases is analyzed using thermodynamics to extract the change of magnetization $\Delta M$ as a function of the Landau level filling factor \ $\nu,$ near $\nu=1$. \ An explanation of $\Delta M$($\nu)$ is proposed \ in terms of Skyrmions. \ Near $\nu=3$, a Wigner crystal is the most probable solid phase, experiments excluding Skyrmions.

Abstract:The parallel magnetic field tuned two-dimensional superconductor-insulator transition has been investigated in ultrathin films of amorphous Bi. The resistance is found to be independent of temperature on both sides of the transition below approximately 120 mK. Several observations suggest that this regime is not intrinsically "metallic" but results from the failure of the films' electrons to cool. The onset of this temperature-independent regime can be moved to higher temperatures by either increasing the measuring current or the level of electromagnetic noise. Temperature scaling is successful above 120 mK. Electric field scaling can be mapped onto temperature scaling by relating the electric fields to elevated electron temperatures. These results cast doubt on the existence of an intrinsic metallic regime and on the independent determination of the correlation length and dynamical critical exponents obtained by combining the results of electric field and temperature scaling.

Abstract:Electron solid phases of matter are revealed by characteristic vibrational resonances. Sufficiently large magnetic fields can overcome the effects of disorder, leading to a weakly pinned collective mode called the magnetophonon. Consequently, in this regime it is possible to develop a tightly constrained hydrodynamic theory of pinned magnetophonons. The behavior of the magnetophonon resonance across thermal and quantum melting transitions has been experimentally characterized in two-dimensional electron systems. Applying our theory to these transitions we explain several key features of the data: (i) violation of the Fukuyama-Lee sum rule as the transition is approached is directly tied to the non-Lorentzian form taken by the resonance and (ii) the non-Lorentzian shape is caused by characteristic dissipative channels that become especially important close to melting: proliferating dislocations and uncondensed charge carriers.

Abstract:The two dimensional system of electrons in a high magnetic field offers an opportunity to investigate a phase transition from a quantum liquid into a Wigner solid. Recent experiments have revealed an incipient composite fermion liquid in a parameter range where theory and many experiments had previously suggested the Wigner crystal phase, thus calling into question our current understanding. This Letter shows how very small quantitative corrections (< 1%) in the energy due to the weak interaction between composite fermions can cause a fundamental change in the nature of the ground state, thus providing insight into the puzzling experimental results.

Abstract:A two dimensional magnetic particle in the presence of an external magnetic field is studied. Equilibrium thermodynamical properties are derived by evaluating analytically the partition function. When the external field is applied perpendicular to the anisotropy axis the system exhibits a second order phase transition with order parameter being the magnetization parallel to the field. In this case the system is isomorph to a mechanical system consisting in a particle moving without friction in a circle rotating about its vertical diameter. Contrary to a paramagnetic particle, equilibrium magnetization shows a maximum at finite temperature. We also show that uniaxial anisotropy in a system of noninteracting particles can be missinterpreted as a ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic coupling among the magnetic particles depending on the angle between anisotropy axis and magnetic field.

Abstract:We describe thermal melting of the two-dimensional vortex lattice in a rotating superfluid by generalizing the Halperin and Nelson theory of dislocation-mediated melting and derive a melting temperature proportional to the renormalized shear modulus of the vortex lattice. The rigid-body rotation of the superfluid attenuates the effects of lattice compression on the energy of dislocations and hence the melting temperature, while not affecting the shearing. Finally, we discuss dislocations and thermal melting in inhomogeneous rapidly rotating Bose-Einstein condensates; we delineate a phase diagram in the temperature–rotation rate plane, and infer that the thermal melting temperature should lie below the Bose-Einstein transition temperature.

Abstract:The influence of a magnetic field applied perpendicularly to the plane of a quasi two dimensional, low density classical Coulomb gas, with interparticle potential U of r as 1 over r, is studied using momentum conserving dissipative particle dynamics simulations. The self diffusion and structure of the gas are studied as functions of temperature and strength of the magnetic field. It is found that the gas undergoes a topological phase transition when the temperature is varied, in accord with the Bohr van Leeuwen BvL theorem, the structural properties being unaffected, resembling those of the strictly two dimensional Kosterlitz Thouless transition, with U of r as varying as ln r. Consistent with the BvL theorem, the transition temperature and the melting process of the condensed phase are unchanged by the field. Conversely, the self diffusion coefficient of the gas is strongly reduced by the magnetic field. At the largest values of the cyclotron frequency, the self diffusion coefficient is inversely proportional to the applied magnetic field. The implications of these results are discussed.

Abstract:This paper studies DFT models for homogeneous 2D materials in 3D space, under a constant perpendicular magnetic field. We show how to reduce the three--dimensional energy functional to a one--dimensional one, similarly as in our previous work. This is done by minimizing over states invariant under magnetic translations and that commute with the Landau operator. In the reduced model, the Pauli principle no longer appears. It is replaced by a penalization term in the energy.
