Abstract:Excellent piezoelectric properties of d33* = 768 pm/V and strain = 0.07% at 1 kV/mm, were obtained by lead‐free in (Na0.52K0.4425Li0.0375)(Nb0.86Ta0.06Sb0.08)O3 ceramics. They displayed good temperature stability up to 200°C. Significantly enhanced piezoelectricity originated from nanodomains of width 20–30 nm, and the result was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy. The above‐mentioned nanodomains emerged because of low domain wall energy near polymorphic phase transition regions and insignificant differences in cell parameters between orthorhombic and tetragonal phases. The nanodomain configuration easily responded to an external electric field, leading to high electric field‐induced strain.
Effects of nano-sized BCZT on structure and electrical properties of KNN-based lead-free piezoceramics

Abstract:The (1 − x)(Li 0.03 Na 0.5 K 0.47 )(Nb 0.92 Sb 0.05 Ta 0.03 )O 3 –xBa 0.85 Ca 0.15 Zr 0.1 Ti 0.9 O 3 (LNKNST–BCZT, x = 0, 0.5, 1.5, 2.5, and 3.5%) lead-free piezoceramics were synthesized by the conventional solid-state reaction method with adding nano-sized Ba 0.85 Ca 0.15 Zr 0.1 Ti 0.9 O 3 (BCZT) powder to investigate their influences on crystal structure and electrical properties. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis reveals that all the sintered LNKNST–BCZT ceramics exhibit pure perovskite structure with the mainly rhombohedral (R) phase or the coexistence of rhombohedral (R) phase and tetragonal (T) phase. The composition of the LNKNST–1.5%BCZT ceramics locates around the critical point, i.e., the ceramics changing from the coexistence of rhombohedral (R) phase and tetragonal (T) phase to purely rhombohedral (R) phase, and presents the most densified microstructure morphology, which can be confirmed further by the field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) observation. There are two dielectric anomalies in the temperature dependent dielectric properties curves of the LNKNST–BCZT ceramics, which correlate with the ferroelectric rhombohedral (R) phase changing to the ferroelectric tetragonal (T) phase, and then to the paraelectric cubic (C) phase. Both the Curie–Weiss law and the power law fittings confirm the diffuse phase transition ferroelectrics characteristic of the LNKNST–1.5%BCZT ceramics, which is considered as correlating with the polar nanoregions (PNRs). Due to the densification effect caused by the chosen amount of nano-sized BCZT doping and the construction of R–T polymorphic phase boundary, the LNKNST–1.5%BCZT ceramics exhibit the best ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties. The complex impedance spectroscopy analysis confirms that the extrinsic electrical conduction mechanism at high temperatures is dominated by the oxygen vacancies induced by the evaporation of the alkali metals during sintering.

Abstract:The growth of piezo science is phenomenal since the discovery of piezoelectricity in 1880. Among various piezoelectric materials, lead zirconate titanate (PZT) is a very popular and exhaustively studied piezo system which allows synthesis of large number of materials with wide range of properties due to formation of solid solutions over large range of Zr:Ti ratio. Also, this system accommodates wide range of dopants for modification of crystal structure. Due to this versatile nature, PZT has emerged as very popular among users and researchers worldwide. However, considering the toxicity of lead oxide, development of lead free piezo ceramics is encouraged in recent years. Some lead free piezo material systems such as BNT, BKT, KNN, BZT-BCT have been explored. However, development of lead free piezo devices and their performance in comparison with PZT devices are yet to be established. At this juncture, it was felt that an article reviewing the current status of development of piezo materials highlighting the change from PZT to various lead free systems would be of very much interest to the researchers. Therefore, efforts are made to bring out the recent developments on R&D of piezo materials in this review article.

Progress in Nano-powder Fabrication and Property Study of Lead-free Piezoelectric Ceramics

Abstract:Lead-free piezoelectric ceramics (LFPC) have attracted an increasing attention along with the economic development and human environmental consciousness improvement. But,compared with properties of lead piezoelectric ceramics (LPC),poor properties of LFPC restrict its applications seriously. Nevertheless,the appearance and development of nanotechnology offer a good platform to make properties of LFPC reach and even exceed those of LPC. In this paper,the recent progress in nano-powder fabrication of LFPC is reviewed. The properties between LFPC based on nano-powders and LFPC based on ordinary raw material are compared. Finally,the future prospect on the development and applications of LFPC based on nano-powders is proposed. The uniform nano-powders with controllable sizes and shapes can be acquired by varying reaction parameters,using which the performance of LFPC will be enhanced greatly.

Abstract:The piezoelectric property was found by Curie brothers in quartz and Rachel salt (1881). This property is a complicated phenomenon that makes it challenging to study. In 1935, the piezoelectric properties of potassium-dehydrogenated phosphate, the first famous piezoelectric material, were determined. Study about these properties of materials was developed by USA, Russia, and Japan during the Second World War, resulting in some piezoelectric materials such as barium titanate (BT) and lead zirconate titanate (PZT) in 1940 and 1950, respectively. Pure and doped PZT families have been widely studied in ceramics and nanostructured forms to enhance their piezoelectric properties. Because of the lead, the PZT materials are harmful to the environment. Therefore, it has been tried to replace it with suitable lead-free materials for practical purposes. The first lead-free piezoelectric material investigated in this respect is BT. However, the piezoelectric properties of BT are not as good as PZT, so a new generation of lead-free piezoelectric materials has been developed. These new lead-free piezoelectric materials are divided into two categories: (1) the lead-free piezoelectric material based on BNT (bismuth niobium titanate) and (2) the lead-free piezoelectric material based on KNN (potassium sodium niobite). The most significant advantage of these materials is that they are environmentally friendly, but their piezoelectric properties are less than PZT. In this chapter review, lead-based and lead-free piezoelectric materials such as PZT, BT, BZT, KNN, BNT, and ZnO are studied. The synthesized methods of piezoelectric materials in ceramic and nanostructure forms are presented. The applications of piezoelectric ceramics and nanostructures are discussed.

Abstract:Recent advances in the development of novel methods for the local characterization of ferroelectric domains open up new opportunities not only to image, but also to control and to create desired domain configurations (domain engineering). The morphotropic and polymorphic phase boundaries that are frequently used to increase the electromechanical and dielectric performance of ferroelectric ceramics have a tremendous effect on the domain structure, which can serve as a signature of complex polarization states and link local and macroscopic piezoelectric and dielectric responses. This is especially important for the study of lead-free ferroelectric ceramics, which is currently replacing traditional lead-containing materials, and great efforts are devoted to increasing their performance to match that of lead zirconate titanate (PZT). In this work, we provide a short overview of the recent progress in the imaging of domain structure in two major families of ceramic lead-free systems based on BiFeO₃ (BFO) and (Ka0.5Na0.5)NbO₃ (KNN). This can be used as a guideline for the understanding of domain processes in lead-free piezoelectric ceramics and provide further insight into the mechanisms of structure-property relationship in these technologically important material families.

Abstract:The field of lead-free piezoceramics, which aims to replace lead zirconate titanate (PZT) and related perovskite materials, has been vibrant for almost 15 years. Once the science in this field attained a certain stage of maturity, materials with properties better than PZT have appeared, and the first products are about to reach the marketplace. This article describes the three most promising lead-free piezoceramics currently under discussion to replace PZT. Each has a pronounced property profile geared for specific applications. Guidelines for directions for fundamental future research on as well as technology transfer to industry of lead-free piezoceramics are provided.

Abstract:Environment-friendly (K,Na)NbO3-based (KNN) lead-free piezoelectric materials have been studied extensively in the past decade. Significant progress has been made in this field, manifesting competitive piezoelectric performance with that of lead-based, for specific application scenarios. Further understanding of the relationship between high piezoelectricity and microstructure or more precisely, ferroelectric domain structure, domain wall pinning effect, domain wall conduction and local polarization switching underpins the continuous advancement of piezoelectric properties, with the help of piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM). In this review, we will present the fundamentals of scanning probe microscopy (SPM) and its cardinal derivative in piezoelectric and ferroelectric world, PFM. Some representative operational modes and a variety of recent applications in KNN-based piezoelectric materials are presented. We expect that PFM and its combination with some newly developed technology will continue to provide great insight into piezoelectric materials and structures, and will play a valuable role in promoting the performance to a new level.
Practical high strain with superior temperature stability in lead-free piezoceramics through domain engineering

Abstract:An easy-to-use domain strategy by utilizing phase boundary design, chemical modification, and electric-field driving was employed to optimize strain and temperature stability of a polycrystalline ceramic. First, the effects of phase boundary, composition, and electric field on the domain were investigated in detail. Distinct spontaneous polarization rotation appears in various phase transition processes, inducing different evolution of domain structure and piezoresponse at elevated temperatures. Measurements reveal that the domain at the rhombohedral-tetragonal (R-T) phase boundary shows giant piezoresponse and high temperature stability. The structure origin is assigned to the slow degradation of spontaneous polarization, and the highly steady domain contribution stimulates excellent strain stability at the R-T phase boundary. Additionally, doped components significantly influenced domain stability, and boosted electric fields stabilized the piezoresponse of the domain. Second, modulating domain stability and its piezoresponse through tuning the phase boundary and driving field, as well as chemical modification, realized a large and temperature-insensitive strain fluctuation less than 3% at 23-80 degrees C) in (K, Na)NbO3 (KNN)-based ceramics. This value is largely superior to that obtained from current lead-free piezoelectric materials and some soft lead-based counterparts, indicating a tremendous application potential for (K, Na)NbO3 (KNN)-based ceramics. This study affords a significant guidance for designing lead-free piezoelectric materials with high piezoelectricity and temperature stability.

Abstract:(K, Na)NbO3 (KNN) is a promising lead-free compound that is more suitable for piezoelectric applications requiring environmental or even biological compatibility than the traditional lead-based Pb(Zr, Ti)O-3 systems. In this work, we synthesized single crystalline KNN nanorods (NRs) with various K/Na ratios, which were used as ideal specimens for investigating the compositional dependence of piezoelectricity. Piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) was utilized to characterize the three-dimensional (3-D) morphology and piezoelectric properties of single crystalline KNN NRs. A phase boundary was confirmed around a K/Na ratio of similar to 45/55 based on local switching behavior, whereby enhanced piezoresponse in KNN single crystals was obtained with specific domain structures. The methodology demonstrated in this work can also be applied for further fundamental studies on KNN as well as other lead-free piezoelectric materials.

Abstract:Most widely used piezoelectric ceramics are based on Pb(Zr,Ti)O 3 (PZT) composition which has adverse environmental and health effects due to its high lead content. Environmental and safety concerns with respect to the utilization, recycling, and disposal of lead-based piezoelectric ceramics have induced a new surge in developing lead-free piezoelectric ceramics. Among all the lead-free ceramics, (K,Na)NbO 3 (KNN) has drawn increasing attention because of its well-balanced piezoelectric properties and better environmental compatibility. On basis of the author’s work, this review summarizes the progress that has been made in recent years on development of KNN-based piezoelectric ceramics, including crystallographic structure and phase transition analysis, pressurized solid-state sintering as well as liquid-phase-assisted sintering process, and poling treatment for property enhancement. All in all, KNN is a promising lead-free system, but more research is still required both from academic and industrial interests.

Abstract:With the capability of interconversion between electrical and mechanical energy, piezoelectric materials have been revolutionized by the implementation of perovskite-piezoelectric-ceramic-based studies over 70 years. In particular, the market of piezoelectric ceramics has been dominated by lead zirconate titanate for decades. Nowadays, the research on piezoelectric ceramics is largely driven by cutting-edge technological demand as well as the consideration of a sustainable society. Hence, environmental-friendly lead-free piezoelectric materials have emerged to replace lead-based Pb(Zr,Ti)O-3 (PZT) compositions. Owing to the inherent high mechanical quality factor (Q(m)) and low energy loss, (Li,Na)NbO3 (LNN) materials have recently drawn increasing attention and brought advantages to high-power piezoelectric applications. Although the crystallographic structures of LNN materials were intensively investigated for decades, the technical strategies for electrical performance are still limited. As a result, the property enhancement appears to have approached a plateau. This review traces the progress in the development of LNN materials, starting from the polymorphism in terms of the crystal structures, phase transitions, and local structural distortions. Then, the key milestone works on the functional tunability of LNN are reviewed with emphasis on involved engineering approaches. The exceptional performance at a large vibration velocity makes LNN ceramics promising for high-power applications, such as ultrasonic welding (UW) and ultrasonic osteotomes (UOs). The remaining challenges and some strategic insights for synergistically engineering the functional performance of LNN piezoceramics are also suggested.

Abstract:Lead-free electroceramics represent an emerging area of research that has the potential to enable new green advances in electronics. Research has mainly focused on the development of new piezoelectric materials for replacing lead containing oxides exhibiting superior electromechanical behavior. Lead-free BiFeO3-based materials are not only the promising candidates to replace lead-based materials but also show intriguing properties which may inspire innovative material design for the next generation of lead-free piezoceramics. This review aims to highlight the current state of research and overlooked aspects in lead-free BiFeO3-based ceramics, which could be insightful in elucidating certain controversial issues. Current strategies to reduce high conductivity, influence of chemical heterogeneity on both functional properties and crystal structure, effective heat treatment procedures, and the role of pseudo-cubic structures on the enhancement of piezoelectric properties are subjects of highlighted within this review as they have a significant impact on the quality of BiFeO3-based lead-free piezoelectrics (but are often disregarded).

Nanodomain Engineered (K, Na)NbO3 Lead‐Free Piezoceramics: Enhanced Thermal and Cycling Reliabilities

Abstract:The growing environmental concerns have been pushing the development of viable green alternatives for lead-based piezoceramics to be one of the priorities in functional ceramic materials. A polymorphic phase transition has been utilized to enhance piezoelectric properties of lead-free (K, Na)NbO3-based materials, accepting the drawbacks of high temperature and cycling instabilities. Here, we present that CaZrO3-modified (K, Na)NbO3 piezoceramics not only possess excellent performance at ambient conditions benefiting from nanodomain engineering, but also exhibit superior stability against temperature fluctuation and electrical fatigue cycling. It was found that the piezoelectric coefficient d(33) is temperature independent under 4kV/mm, which can be attributed to enhanced thermal stability of electric field engineered domain configuration; whereas the electric field induced strain exhibits excellent fatigue resistance up to 10(7) sesquipolar cycles. These findings render the current material an unprecedented opportunity for actuator applications demanding improved thermal and cycling reliabilities.

Abstract:Piezoelectric materials are known to mankind for more than a century, with numerous advancements made in both scientific understandings and practical applications. In the last two decades, in particular, the research on piezoelectrics has largely been driven by the constantly changing technological demand, and the drive toward a sustainable society. Hence, environmental-friendly "lead-free piezoelectrics" have emerged in the anticipation of replacing lead-based counterparts with at least comparable performance. However, there are still obstacles to be overcome for realizing this objective, while the efforts in this direction already seem to culminate. Therefore, novel structural strategies need to be designed to address these issues and for further breakthrough in this field. Here, various strategies to enhance piezoelectric properties in lead-free systems with fundamental and historical context, and from atomic to macroscopic scale, are explored. The main challenges currently faced in the transition from lead-based to lead-free piezoelectrics are identified and key milestones for future research in this field are suggested. These include: i) decoding the fundamental mechanisms; ii) large temperature-stable piezoresponse; and iii) fabrication-friendly and tailorable composition. Strategic insights and general guidelines for the synergistic design of new piezoelectric materials for obtaining a large piezoelectric response are also provided.

Abstract:Current piezoelectric device systems need a significant reduction in size and weight so that electronic modules of increasing capacity and functionality can be incorporated into a great range of applications, particularly in energy device platforms. The key question for most applications is whether they can compete in the race of down-scaling and an easy integration with highly adaptable properties into various system technologies such as nano-electro-mechanical systems (NEMS). Piezoelectric NEMS have potential to offer access to a parameter space for sensing, actuating, and powering, which is inflential and intriguing. Fortunately, recent advances in modelling, synthesis, and characterization techniques are spurring unprecedented developments in a new field of piezoelectric nano-materials and devices. While the need for looking more closely at the piezoelectric nano-materials is driven by the relentless drive of miniaturization, there is an additional motivation: the piezoelectric materials, which are showing the largest electromechanical responses, are currently toxic lead (Pb)-based perovskite materials (such as the ubiquitous Pb(Zr,Ti)O3, PZT). This is important, as there is strong legislative and moral push to remove toxic lead compounds from commercial products. By far, the lack of viable alternatives has led to continuing exemptions to allow their temporary use in piezoelectric applications. However, the present exemption will expire soon, and the concurrent improvement of lead-free piezoelectric materials has led to the possibility that no new exemption will be granted. In this paper, the universal approaches and recent progresses in the field of lead-free piezoelectric nano-materials, initially focusing on hybrid composite materials as well as individual nanoparticles, and related energy harvesting devices are systematically elaborated. The paper begins with a short introduction to the properties of interest in various piezoelectric nanomaterials and a brief description of the current state-of-the-art for lead-free piezoelectric nanostructured materials. We then describe several key methodologies for the synthesis of nanostructure materials including nanoparticles, followed by the discussion on the critical current and emerging applications in detail.

Abstract:Driven by an ever-growing demand for environmentally compatible materials, the past two decades have witnessed the booming development in the field of piezoelectrics. To maximally explore the potential of lead-free piezoelectrics, chemical doping could be an effective approach, referenced from tactics adopted in lead-based piezoelectrics. Herein, we reveal the distinct role of manganese in a promising lead-free perovskite (K, Na)NbO3 (denoted by KNN) in comparison to that in market-dominating lead-based counterparts [Pb(Zr, Ti)O3, PZT]. In contrast to the scenario in PZT, manganese doping in KNN results in tremendously improved piezoelectric coefficient d33 by nearly 200%, whereas the same doping species in PZT deteriorates the d33 down to less than 30% of its original value. The result is rationalized from macroscopic and local electrical characterizations down to atomic-scale visualization. This study demonstrates that there is enormous space to further enhance piezoelectricity in lead-free systems because the chemical doping effect may completely differ in lead-containing and lead-free perovskites.

Abstract:Environment-friendly lead-free piezoelectric ceramics have been studied extensively in the past decade with great progress particularly in systems based on a niobate perovskite compound formulated as (K, Na)NbO3 (abbreviated as KNN). A comprehensive review on the latest development of KNN-based piezoelectric ceramics is presented in this article, including the phase structure, property enhancement approaches, and sintering processes as well as the status of some promising applications. The phase structure of KNN was reexamined and associated with the effect of chemical modification on its tetragonal-to-orthorhombic transition. Then, a special focus is placed on the temperature dependence of piezoelectric properties of KNN-based ceramics, followed by reviewing the recent approaches devoted to the temperature-stability enhancement. The processing fundamentals related to the sintering of KNN-based ceramics are also presented with an emphasis on compositional and microstructural control. Finally, this review introduces several industrial attempts of traditional piezoceramic products using KNN-based ceramics and the studies on some promising application in authors' laboratory.
