Abstract:This is an adapatation by U. Frisch of an English translation by Thomas E. Burton of Euler's memoir `Principes généraux du mouvement des fluides' (Euler, 1775b). Burton's translation appeared in Fluid Dynamics, 34} (1999) pp. 801-82, Springer and is here adapted by permission. A detailed presentation of Euler's published work can be found in Truesdell, 1954. Euler's work is discussed also in the perspective of eighteenth century fluid dynamics research by Darrigol and Frisch, 2008. Explanatory footnotes have been supplied where necessary by G.K. Mikhailov and a few more by U. Frisch and <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://O.Darrigol" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>. Abstract:Two prized papers, one by Augustin Cauchy in 1815, presented to the French Academy and the other by Hermann Hankel in 1861, presented to Göttingen University, contain major discoveries on vorticity dynamics whose impact is now quickly increasing. Cauchy found a Lagrangian formulation of 3D ideal incompressible flow in terms of three invariants that generalize to three dimensions the now well-known law of conservation of vorticity along fluid particle trajectories for two-dimensional flow. This has very recently been used to prove analyticity in time of fluid particle trajectories for 3D incompressible Euler flow and can be extended to compressible flow, in particular to cosmological dark matter. Hankel showed that Cauchy's formulation gives a very simple Lagrangian derivation of the Helmholtz vorticity-flux invariants and, in the middle of the proof, derived an intermediate result which is the conservation of the circulation of the velocity around a closed contour moving with the fluid. This circulation theorem was to be rediscovered independently by William Thomson (Kelvin) in 1869. Cauchy's invariants were only occasionally cited in the 19th century --- besides Hankel, foremost by George Stokes and Maurice Lévy --- and even less so in the 20th until they were rediscovered via Emmy Noether's theorem in the late 1960, but reattributed to Cauchy only at the end of the 20th century by Russian scientists.

A quaternionic unification of electromagnetism and hydrodynamics

Abstract:We have derived energy conservation equations from the quaternionic Newton's law that is compatible with Lorentz transformation. This Newton's law yields directly the Euler equation and other equations governing the fluid motion. With this formalism, the pressure contributes positively to the dynamics of the system in the same way mass does. Hydrodynamic equations are derived from Maxwell's equations by adopting an electromagnetohydrodynamics (EMH) analogy. In this analogy the hydroelectric field is related to the local acceleration of the fluid and the Lorentz gauge is related to the incompressible fluid condition. An analogous Lorentz gauge in hydrodynamics is proposed. We have shown that the vorticity of the fluid is developed whenever the particle local acceleration of the fluid deviates from the velocity direction. We have also shown that Lorentz force in electromagnetism corresponds to Euler force in fluids. Moreover, we have obtained Gauss's, Faraday's and Ampere's -like laws in Hydrodynamics.

Abstract:Newton's basic ideas developed and evolved throughout his career and changed in sometimes surprisingly profound ways. In this paper I propose an outline of the evolution of Newton's conceptual framework by following the development of his ideas throughout the early work preceding the first edition of the Principia, and thus to complete the work that has been done by Whiteside and Ruffner with respect to Newton's mechanics. I shall show that these evolutions - the mechanical and the metaphysical - are closely interrelated. My focus will be on a key text that marks a turning point both from the metaphysical and the methodological point of view: the "De gravitatione et aequipondio fluidorum". Rather than looking upon it as an isolated fact, I establish the connections of this text to other manuscripts from the same period, primarily the manuscript "Elements of Mechanicks" in the Hall & Hall edition, as well as the two variants of the "De Motu", to which it can be said to relate as to a "zero release".

Abstract:This paper undertakes a historical investigation of the separate and independent development of calculus by Isaac Newton and Gottfried Leibniz in the late 17th century. Through analysis of primary sources and historiographical perspectives, it explores the differences in notation, methods, and applications used by each mathematician to formulate foundational concepts of calculus. The research demonstrates that Newton relied more on geometric intuition, developing calculus concepts like fluxions and fluents rooted in kinematic problems. His 1687 Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica synthesized many calculus innovations. Meanwhile, Leibniz approached calculus from an algebraic mindset, utilizing infinitesimal differentials and comprehensively explaining integral and differential calculus in publications like Nova Methodus pro Maximis et Minimis. Evaluation of letters and documents from the 1670s and 1680s shows no direct collaboration or communication about calculus between Newton and Leibniz. This lack of transmission, coupled with the disparities in their notation and calculus techniques, provides evidence for independent creation. However, Newton and Leibniz shared key insights regarding rates of change, derivatives and integrals, hinting at a broader zeitgeist in early modern mathematics and science. Thus, this dual achievement illustrates how the Scientific Revolution facilitated conceptual convergence despite geographic separation between great thinkers. Investigating this case study offers perspective on the interplay between individual genius and wider social contexts in driving scientific progress. This paper concludes by assessing the legacy of the Newton-Leibniz debate over priority and analyzing work that paved the way for modern unified calculus notation and applications.

Abstract:These are lecture notes for a short winter course at the Department of Mathematics, University of Coimbra, Portugal, December 6--8, 2018. The course was part of the 13th International Young Researchers Workshop on Geometry, Mechanics and Control. In three lectures I trace the work of three heroes of mathematics and mechanics: Euler, Poincaré, and Arnold. This leads up to the aim of the lectures: to explain Arnold's discovery from 1966 that solutions to Euler's equations for the motion of an incompressible fluid correspond to geodesics on the infinite-dimensional Riemannian manifold of volume preserving diffeomorphisms. In many ways, this discovery is the foundation for the field of geometric hydrodynamics, which today encompasses much more than just Euler's equations, with deep connections to many other fields such as optimal transport, shape analysis, and information theory.

The number of treatises written by Euler on this subject is enormous, including the most notorious Scientia Navalis (1749), Decouverte d’un noveau principe de mecanique (1752), Du mouvement de rotation des corps solides autour d’un axe variable (1765), Theoria motus corporum solidorum seu rigidorum (1765) and Nova methodus motu corporum rigidorum determinandi (1776), in which he developed the ideas of the instantaneous rotation axis, the so-called Euler equations and angles, the components of what is now known as the inertia tensor, the principal axes of inertia, and, finally, the generalisation of the translation and rotation movement equations for any system.

Abstract:The article presents the German philosopher G. W. Leibniz as a key precursor of the First Law of Thermodynamics. In this way, Leibniz tried to oppose Newton, who seems to have completely rejected the First Law of Thermodynamics, while at the same time remarkably anticipating the Second. Based on his polemics not only with Newton, from whose Laws of Motion thermodynamics originates, and with his advocate Samuel Clarke, but also with René Descartes, whose conception Leibniz partially followed, Leibnizʼs reasoning turns out to be the most convincing. It is certainly no coincidence that the later founders of thermodynamics frequently acknowledged him.

Abstract:Abstract A formalism is developed, and applied, that describes a class of one-body quantum mechanical systems as fluids where each stationary state is a steady flow state. The time-independent Schrödinger equation for one-body stationary states with real-valued wavefunctions is shown to be equivalent to a compressible-flow generalization of the Bernoulli equation of fluid dynamics. The mass density, velocity and pressure are taken as functions that are determined by the probability density. The generalized Bernoulli equation describes compressible, irrotational, steady flow with variable mass and a constant specific total energy, i.e, a constant energy per mass for each fluid element. The generalized Bernoulli equation and a generalized continuity equation provide a fluid dynamic interpretation of a class of quantum mechanical stationary states that is an alternative to the unrealistic, static-fluid interpretation provided by the Madelung equations and quantum hydrodynamics. The total kinetic energy from the Bernoulli equation is shown to be equal to the expectation value of the kinetic energy, and the integrand of the expectation value of the kinetic energy is given an interpretation. It is also demonstrated that variable mass is necessary for a satisfactory fluid model of stationary states. However, over all space, the flows conserve mass, because the rate of mass creation from the sources are equal to the rate of mass annihilation from the sinks. The following flows are examined: the ground and first excited-states of a particle in a one-dimensional box, the harmonic oscillator, and the hydrogen s states.

Abstract:In the classical framework, the Navier-Stokes-Fourier equations are obtained through the linear uncoupled thermodynamic force-flux relations which guarantee the non-negativity of the entropy production. However, the conventional thermodynamic description is only valid when the Knudsen number is sufficiently small. Here, it is shown that the range of validity of the Navier-Stokes-Fourier equations can be extended by incorporating the nonlinear coupling among the thermodynamic forces and fluxes. The resulting system of conservation laws closed with the coupled constitutive relations is able to describe many interesting rarefaction effects, such as Knudsen paradox, transpiration flows, thermal stress, heat flux without temperature gradients, etc., which can not be predicted by the classical Navier-Stokes-Fourier equations. For this system of equations, a set of phenomenological boundary conditions, which respect the second law of thermodynamics, is also derived. Some of the benchmark problems in fluid mechanics are studied to show the applicability of the derived equations and boundary conditions.

Abstract:A general, multi-component Eulerian fluid theory is a set of nonlinear, hyperbolic partial differential equations. However, if the fluid is to be the large-scale description of a short-range many-body system, further constraints arise on the structure of these equations. Here we derive one such constraint, pertaining to the free energy fluxes. The free energy fluxes generate expectation values of currents, akin to the specific free energy generating conserved densities. They fix the equations of state and the Euler-scale hydrodynamics, and are simply related to the entropy currents. Using the Kubo-Martin-Schwinger relations associated to many conserved quantities, in quantum and classical systems, we show that the associated free energy fluxes are perpendicular to the vector of inverse temperatures characterising the state. This implies that all entropy currents can be expressed as averages of local observables. In few-component fluids, it implies that the averages of currents follow from the specific free energy alone, without the use of Galilean or relativistic invariance. In integrable models, in implies that the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz must satisfy a unitarity condition. The relation also guarantees physical consistency of the Euler hydrodynamics in spatially-inhomogeneous, macroscopic external fields, as it implies conservation of entropy, and the local-density approximated Gibbs form of stationarity states. The main result on free energy fluxes is based on general properties such as clustering, and we show that it is mathematically rigorous in quantum spin chains.

Abstract:The Euler equation of an ideal (i.e. inviscid incompressible) fluid can be regarded, following V.Arnold, as the geodesic flow of the right-invariant $L^2$-metric on the group of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms of the flow domain. In this paper we describe the common origin and symmetry of generalized flows, multiphase fluids (homogenized vortex sheets), and conventional vortex sheets: they all correspond to geodesics on certain groupoids of multiphase diffeomorphisms. Furthermore, we prove that all these problems are Hamiltonian with respect to a Poisson structure on a dual Lie algebroid, generalizing the Hamiltonian property of the Euler equation on a Lie algebra dual.
