Abstract:Myanmar jadeite (jadeitite) is well known for its economical value and distinctive tectonic locality within the collisional belt between India and Eurasian plates. However, it is less studied for its genesis and geodynamic implications due to precipitous topography, adverse weather and local military conflicts in the area. By means of combined ICP-MS and LA-MC-ICPMS techniques, we have carried out in-situ trace elements, U-Pb and Lu-Hf isotopes for zircon inclusions in a piece of jadeite gem sample. CL imaging suggests that the zircons are metasomatic in origin, and contain mineral inclusions of jadeite and omphacite. Seventy-five analyses on 16 grains of the zircons yield a U-Pb age of 158 ± 2 Ma. The Myanmar zircons differ from other types in that they have no significant Eu anomalies despite high HREE concentrations. Measured 176 Hf/ 177 Hf ratios range from 0.282976 to 0.283122, with an average value of 0.283066 ± 7; ε Hf ( t ) value of 13.8 ± 0.3 ( n =75). These results indicate that the Myanmar jadeite was formed in the Late Jurassic, probably by interaction of fluid released from subducted oceanic slab with mantle wedge. Therefore, its formation has no genetic relationship to the continental collision between Indian and Euroasian plates.
Color-Causing Mechanisms of Guatemala Jadeite Jade: Constraints from Spectroscopy and Chemical Compositions

Abstract:The jadeite jade in Guatemala exerts remarkable commercial quality, which has attracted wide attention. Guatemalan jadeite jade displays a rich variety of colors; however, the color formation of this jadeite jade has not been systematically investigated to date. In this paper, we study different colors of jade samples to trace the compositions and color-causing mechanisms through petrography, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), laser Raman spectroscopy (LRS), and UV-visible absorption spectroscopy (UV-Vis), as well as electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). The results show that jadeite and omphacite are the main mineral compositions of Guatemalan jadeite jade, together with minor albite and other impurities. The color of Guatemala jadeite jade is mainly related to Cr3+, Fe2+, and Fe3+, of which a small amount of Cr3+ causes the jadeite jade to be emerald green. Moreover, 1~2% FeO contents can lead to the blue or gray color of the samples, while the Fe3+ makes the sample dark green. The green color of some Cr3+-free jadeite is caused by the electron transition between bands of Fe3+, and the green color is related to the iron content. Moreover, the chemical composition analysis shows that some metallic elements existed in Guatemalan jadeite jade, such as Ca, Ti, Al, Si, Ni, Fe, Mn, Cr, Na, Mg, and Sr, and some trace elements were lost or unevenly distributed, which may lead to the heterogeneity of the color of the samples. Our present investigation provides insights into color discrimination, quality evaluation, and identification of Guatemala jadeite jade.

Abstract:Analyzing black jadeite variety is helpful not only to distinguish black jadeite from the common omphacite jadeite, but also to learn the origin of jadeite by studying these special specimens. The basic gemological properties, mineral composition, structural characteristics, spectroscopic features, and color-causing mechanisms of black jadeite were studied through testing methods such as Polarizing microscope, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy. Recent studies have confirmed the distinct crystalloblastic textures of black jadeite—namely columnar, granular, and fibrous—alongside its characteristic fracture structures. This research further identifies the presence of secondary minerals, primarily opaque black impurities consisting of a graphite and disordered graphite mixture, as revealed by Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analyses. These analyses have elucidated that the variable distribution of graphite mixtures contributes to differing degrees of light absorption, thereby forming various shades of black, a critical factor in the gemstone's coloration. This study suggests that these carbonaceous materials are a byproduct of the carbonization of organic matter within metamorphic fluids, subsequently forming dispersed graphite structures within the mineral matrix and its fractures, indicative of multi-stage metamorphic processes. Additionally, the identification of graphite supports the theory that jadeite's protolith originated from the subduction processes of the Neotethys Ocean, accompanied by metasomatism and high-pressure metamorphism of olivinite.

Abstract:Samples of the jade artifacts unearthed from the Liangzhu sites at Yuhang (Fanshan, Yaoshan, Huiguanshan and Tangshan) of Zhejiang province were described. The chemical composition, phase and jade structure of a hundred and more intact samples were analyzed by the non-destructive techniques of PIXE, XRD and laser Raman spectroscopy. Results showed that the minerals of the jade artifacts mostly belonged to tremolite and tremolite-actinolite. Relationship of the civilization development in the Neolithic age and the application of tremolite type mineral in jade artifacts was discussed. The contents of rare and trace elements in tremolite jade artfacts and in mineral samples were measured for the first time. The possible mineral sources of these tremolite type jade artifacts were discussed.
Cathodoluminescence Microscopy of Zircon in HP- and UHP-Metamorphic Rocks: A Fundamental Technique for Assessing the Problem of Inclusions versus Pseudo-Inclusions

Abstract:This paper shows how a faulty approach to the study of mineral inclusions in zircon can lead to misleading interpretations of the geological context. We present and discuss two well-documented examples. Zircon grains separated from HP metamorphic jadeitite of the Rio San Juan Complex, Dominican Republic, and from UHP pyrope quartzite of the Dora Maira Massif, northern Italy, were studied using cathodoluminescence (CL) techniques, in combination with mineral inclusion and age data. In general, zircon from both localities shows inherited magmatic core domains with oscillatory zoning and metamorphic rims. The magmatic cores of zircon from the jadeitite yield ages of 115–117 Ma and host jadeite and omphacite which are of metamorphic origin and formed at about 78 Ma. Zircon from lawsonite blueschist, representing the country rock of the jadeitite, contains domains with oscillatory zoning that are nearly identical in age to the zircon cores from the adjacent jadeitite, and also contains younger metamorphic minerals such as lawsonite, albite, phengite (Si3.68), chlorite, and omphacite. Similar observations were made on the magmatic cores of zircon from the pyrope quartzite. These are about 275 Ma in age and host pyrope, phengite (Si3.55), talc, and kyanite, all of which formed during UHP metamorphism at about 35 Ma. Zircon from the biotite-phengite-gneiss country rock (metagranite) shows oscillatory zoning and yields ages that are identical to those of the magmatic cores of zircon from pyrope quartzite, which thus reflect granitic intrusion ages. The country-rock zircon also encloses metamorphic minerals with ages of about 35 Ma. Such minerals are, for example, garnet and phengite, as well as a polymineralic assemblage of clinopyroxene+garnet+phengite+quartz, that point to formation at UHP metamorphic conditions around 40 kbar/750 °C. Based on these examples we suggest an effective approach centered on key evidence from CL studies to show that magmatic domains of zircon may actually contain pseudo-inclusions which were not entrapped during an early stage of formation, but were instead introduced during later metamorphic or metasomatic events along microcracks representing pathways for fluid influx. Cathodoluminescence microscopy is thus an excellent tool for avoiding such pitfalls by allowing distinction between true inclusions and pseudo-inclusions in zircon.

Abstract:Although nephrite jade has been collected and treasured since the Stone Age, we lack a clear understanding of how it forms during deformation and metasomatism in shear zones. Using microstructural analysis of samples from Taiwan, California, and New Zealand, we propose a conceptual model for the evolution of nephrite jade that distinguishes four nephrite types based on mode of formation and textural characteristics: (1) primary (type 1a) or folded (type 1b) vein nephrite, (2) crenulated nephrite (type 2), (3) foliated semi-nephrite (type 3), and (4) nodular or domainal nephrite (type 4). We interpret the texture of our analysed samples to represent snapshots of a progressive textural evolution similar to that experienced by other deformed and fine-grained metamorphic rocks that develop under fluid-present, greenschist-facies conditions. Our observations suggest that types 2 and 3 nephrite can evolve from vein nephrite (type 1) by the development of crenulated and foliated metamorphic fabrics, during which the most important deformation process is dissolution–precipitation. However, development of metamorphic fabrics can be interrupted by transient brittle deformation, leading to the formation of type 4 nephrite that is characterised by nodular or angular clasts of nephrite in a nephritic matrix.

Nondestructive Nonlinear Optical Microscopy Revealed the Blackening Mechanism of Ancient Chinese Jades

Abstract:Jade is most valued in Chinese culture since ancient times. For unearthed jade artifacts, the alteration color resulting from weathering effects and human activities provides information for cultural heritage conservation, archaeology, and history. Currently, the noninvasive 3-dimensional characterization of jade artifacts with high chemical and spatial resolution remains challenging. In this work, we applied femtosecond pump-probe microscopy and second harmonic generation microscopy techniques to study the black alteration of an ancient jade artifact of the late Spring and Autumn period (546 to 476 BC). The direct cause of the "mercury alteration" phenomena was discovered to be the conversion of metacinnabar from buried cinnabar in the tomb. Furthermore, a 3-dimensional optical reconstruction of the black alteration was achieved, providing a high-resolution method for analyzing the blackening mechanism without the need of sample damage. Our approach opens up new opportunities to extract microscopic spatiochemical information for a broad range of alteration colors in jade artifacts.

Abstract:Proton induced X-ray emission(PIXE),X-ray diffraction(XRD)and laser Raman Spectroscopy (LRS)were used to analyze the mineralogical characteristics of newly unearthed jade articles from Yinxu of An- yang.The mineral composition and the source of those jade articles were discussed based on the chemical composi- tion,mineral and structural analysis results.The experimental results showed that 80 percent of the newly un- earthed jade articles from Yinxu of Anyang were tremolite-type nephrite,and may come from the same mineral digging site which had better quality.Several specimens belong to serpentine and dolomite.Our research showed that LRS can be applied for identification of jade articles.
Mineral Structure and Mineralization Mechanism of Serpentine Jade from Luchuan,Guangxi Province

Abstract:The nondestructive analysis techniques of Proton Induced X-ray Emission(PIXE),X-ray Diffraction(XRD),Laser Raman Spectroscopy(LRS) and Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM) were applied to analyze the chemical composition and mineral structure of serpentine jade from Luchuan,Guangxi Province.The major XRD bands of the samples located at 0.724,0.456,0.362,0.248,0.153 and 0.150 nm,indicate that the major mineral of Luchuan jade is serpentine.Meanwhile,interpenetration texture was formed between serpentine and associated calcite.Luchuan serpentine jade was formed by hydrothermal metasomatism from dolomitic marble,and both Luchuan Jade and Xinyi Jade belong to Mg-rich carbonate type serpentine.Raman characteristic bands of antigorite located at 229,376,457,686 and 1046 cm-1 while that of chrysotile occurred at 228,345,386,624,690 and 1102 cm-1.Therefore,the Raman spectroscopy can be used to identify chrysotile and antigorite of the serpentine minerals of Luchuan jade.
A Method of Determining Heated Ancient Nephrite Jades in China.

Abstract:Ancient jade is one of the most significant cultural relics in China. Despite the increasingly important role of heated jades in ancient jade study, there are still few in-depth material studies on heated jades for the time being, which results in limitations on archaeological research and conservation. In order to evaluate the appearance change of nephrite jades, we employ the heating simulation experiment to present these change under different heating temperature ranging from 100 °C to 1300 °C. In this study, a nondestructive identification method proposed is to help determine whether the ancient jades were heated before and what the approximate heating temperature was from 100 °C to 1300 °C though phase transformation, structure change and colour variation with several advanced characterization methods such as the X-ray diffraction (XRD), the thermo-gravimetric analyser (TGA), the ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer (UV-Vis), the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and the scanning electron microscope (SEM). The hierarchy of colour (from ~500 °C) and structure (from ~800 °C) on heated jades in the jade research field were first proposed and discuss here. This method is considered useful and valuable in the study and protection of Chinese ancient jades.
Glass Melt Inclusion in Clinopyroxene from Linqu Cenozoic Basalt, Shandong Province, China

Abstract:Cenozoic basalts from the Linqu County, Shandong Province, China entrain some clinopyroxene crystals, of which many contain abundant glass melt inclusions. These melt inclusions are extremely irregular in shape with most grain sizes in a range of 10–50 μm and coexist with low-Mg # olivines, labradorites and Ca-rich potassium feldspars. In-situ major and trace element analyses show that the glass melt inclusions are high in alkalis (Na 2 O+K 2 O > 10 wt%), SiO 2 (>54 wt%), CaO and FeO (>4 wt%), but low in MgO (Mg # < 20), and have LREE enrichments ((Ce/Yb) cn = 11.6–16.4) and apparently positive Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu* > 2), thus having phonolitic compositions. The compositional features of clinopyroxene crystals, glass melt inclusions and their coexistent minerals suggest that these melt inclusions were exotic melts in clinopyroxenes trapped prior to their entrainment in the host basalt. The discovery of these melt inclusions provides a new approach to further investigating the evolution of Mesozoic lithospheric mantle beneath the southeastern North China Craton.
An analysis of mineral structure and chemical composition of China's Lantian Jade

Abstract:Lantian Jade is one of the most famous jades in Chinese history,but there still exists controversy among researchers in recognition of the difference between modern Lantian Jade and ancient Lantian Jade,and hence the research on mineralogical characteristics of modern Lantian Jade is of great importance in the archaeological study of Lantian Jade.In this paper,the techniques of proton induced X-ray emission(PIXE),X-ray diffraction(XRD)and laser Raman spectroscopy(LRS)were employed to analyze the chemical composition and mineral structure of modern Lantian Jade from Shaanxi Province.The proportions of several samples were estimated.The results indicate that the specimens can be divided into two kinds.The major mineral of the first kind is serpentine,the major mineral of most specimens is antigorite whose Raman characteristic peaks occur at 231,373,458,527,648,681 and 1 045 cm-1,and the formula of specimen LT2 is Na0.30(Mg5.08,Al0.14,Fe0.26)(Si4.06O10)(OH)8.However,one of the specimens belongs to lizardite whose Raman characteristic peaks occur at 226,344,379,462,623,690 and 1 098 cm-1,with lizardite being found in Lantian Jade for the first time.The major minerals of the second kind are serpentine,calcite or augite,together with minor dolomite,talc and tremolite.The formation mechanism of Lantian Jade seemed to be regional metamorphism together with contact metasomatic metamorphism.The formation process is as follows:dolomitic marble generated low temperature metamorphic mineral serpentine by magmatic hydrothermal metasomatism at low temperature,with two kinds of specimens corresponding to different serpentinization levels.There are no other minerals in the first kind,because the calcium was moved away by hydrothermal SiO2.The existence of dolomite and calcite in the second kind suggests incomplete serpentinization.In trace elements,the content of Mn,Zn and Zr is higher than that of other rocks.Both Lantian Jade and Xiuyan Jade belong to serpentine jade,but they can't be distinguished from each other by available technologies.These characteristics can provide useful data for the study of archaeology and civilization of Lantian Jade.
Constraints on Crystallinity of Graphite Inclusions in Nephrite Jade from Xinjiang, Northwest China: Implications for Nephrite Jade Formation Temperatures

Abstract:Graphite usually occurs in mineral/rock associations in the form of solid inclusions and plays an important role in tracing regional metamorphic degree, ore-forming temperature, fluid evolution, as well as the deep carbon cycle of the Earth. In this study, we investigate the placer black nephrite jade where the co-occurrence of abundant graphite inclusions and jade remains extraordinary. By employing petrographic, mineral-chemical, and Raman spectroscopic methods, we characterize the textures and crystallinity of graphite inclusions that exist in nephrite jade. EPMA and petrological data indicate that the main constituents of black jade are tremolite and graphite, with minor phases of diopside, calcite, dolomite, epidote, and apatite. Micro-Raman spectroscopic thermometry of carbonaceous material shows that most of the formation temperatures of graphite inclusions are between 378 and 556 °C, and only a few temperatures may be above 650 °C, indicating that graphite inclusions were formed at medium- to high-temperature metamorphic facies. The petrologic and spectral investigations of graphite inclusions in these nephrite jade samples show major metamorphic signatures with mixed features associated with fluid precipitation. Our results allow us to propose that primary nephrite jade was formed under multi-stage tectonic evolution conditions, and regional temperatures were predominately driven by the late continent–continent collision, while the ore-controlling temperatures of nephrite jade formation were found in a medium- to high-temperature environment.

The Chemical Compositions and Origin Characters of Serpentine Jade from Different Deposits

Abstract:This work aims to explore the sources of raw materials of archaic serpentine jade artifacts by comparing their trace element content. The major and trace elements of serpentine jade samples from different deposits in China are determined by external-beam proton-induced X-ray emission (PIXE). Trace element concentrations are also measured by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy for comparison. The relationship between the trace element content and the mechanism of serpentine formation is discussed. The results indicate that Type I jade has a small amount of Ni in it and almost no Cr and Co while significant amount of Cr, Co and Ni was found in Type II jade. Thus, this could be used to distinguish the two kinds of serpentine jade formed by different mechanisms.
Relationship between cathodoluminescence response and trace element characterization of cassiterite from the Yunling tin deposit in western Yunnan, China: Implications for substitution mechanism and ore genesis

Abstract:Cathodoluminescent (CL) imaging, combined quantitative geochemical analyses using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), was employed to study the cassiterite crystals from the Yunling tin deposit in western Yunnan Province, China. This investigation aimed to establish a connection between CL response with trace element compositions. The CL imaging of a well-formed centimeter-scale euhedral single crystal of cassiterite revealed two types of primary growth domains, namely oscillatory and sector zoning. High spatial resolution LA-ICP-MS spot analysis along three centimeter-scale profiles revealed that the oscillatory zoning patterns were primarily defined by the concentrations of Nb and Ta. The CL response associated with the oscillatory zoning was attributed to the interplay between activators such as Ti, Nb, Ta, and V, and quenchers like Fe. On the other hand, sector zoning exhibited significantly high W content, reaching three orders of magnitude greater than that in the oscillatory zoning. Consequently, the sectors displayed a dark CL response. Furthermore, U showed a sectoral preference, with contents within the sector zoning examined in this study reaching up to 10 ppm. The systematic variations in geochemical compositions suggest that the incorporation of trace elements in Yunling cassiterite involves a coupled substitutional mechanism of pentavalent and trivalent elements (e.g., Sc 3+ + V 5+ ↔ 2Sn 4+ ) with H + potentially serving as a compensating ion for the Fe 3+ excess. It is worth noting that the trace element enrichment and potential substitution in the sector and non-sector regions of the single crystal may differ significantly. Therefore, the use of cassiterite trace elements as indicators of the mineralization environment requires careful consideration, particularly when analyzing randomly selected particles obtained from crushing. In such instances, it is recommended to utilize cassiterite samples that exhibit a preserved crystal texture extending from the core to the rim, such as cassiterite in thin sections or morphology-integral cassiterite separates. Moreover, the contrasting W contents observed between the sector and non-sector zones may provide an explanation for two trends in the Fe–W diagram of cassiterite associated with granite that were previously-unspecified.

Abstract:Confocal Raman microspectroscopy and portable X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy were used nondestructively to characterise 18 intact jade artifacts from the Cemetery of the Ying State in Pingdingshan, Henan Province, China. These jade artifacts date from the early to the middle of the Western Zhou Period (the mid-11th to the mid-9th century BC). Thirteen jade artifacts made of tremolite and two jade artifacts made of actinolite were discriminated from each other by their hydroxyl stretching modes, and a malachite pendant, a muscovite dagger-axe, and a crystal pendant were also identified. Black graphite was analysed in three jade artifacts composed of tremolite, and the mineralization temperatures were estimated and compared. A red powder was found on the surface of all of the jade artifacts, and this was found to be cinnabar (HgS), which is thought to have been added to the tomb environments during burial ceremonies. The chemical compositions and the possible provenances of the jade artifacts are briefly discussed. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Coloration Mechanism and Chromaticity of Xiuyan Jade of China

Abstract:The coloration mechanism of Xiuyan Jade was studied with the chemical composition, valance and coordination states of transition metal ions. The result of inductively-coupled plasma atom emission spectrometer (ICP-AES) indicated that there are little other transition metal elements except for iron and manganese. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) revealed that Fe3+ ions locate at both octahedral sites and tetrahedral sites. Optical absorption spectrum (OAS) showed the presence of Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions. Moreover, depending on the results of OAS, Fe2+ ions determine the green color of Xiuyan Jade, while the coexistence of Fe3+ and Fe2+ ions introduces the yellow color of Xiuyan Jade. The chromaticity coordinate was calculated according to diffuse reflectance spectrum. The result demonstrated that chromaticity coordinates can be used to quantitatively distinguish Xiuyan Jade with similar color, which can provide a scientific reference for the evaluation of the value of Xiuyan Jade.

Abstract:Rationale: Two Early Classic period (ca 250-600 CE) Maya carved, greenstone jade pendants, Specimens A and B, were recovered from the Pacbitun site in Belize in 1987. Mass scans of resolution ~600,000 were obtained for the jade pendants and two British Columbia jade ornaments. Methods: Polyatomic ions from jade grit have been observed using Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR-MS), specifically the Bruker Daltonics, SolariX XR, combined with matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI); the matrix material was α-cyano-4-hydroxycinnamicacid. Results: Presented here is an interpretation of the mass spectrometric observations from multiplicities of silicate materials. Observation of novel polyatomic ion species of m/z 800-1400 indicate the ejection of charged ensembles composed of 60-180 atoms from jade grit. The charged ensembles represent minute regions of jade grit that have retained many of the spatial relationships of atoms within the jade; the required ejection energy is provided by laser photons accumulated in the matrix. Acid solutions of grit from Specimens A and ornament KMM were analyzed by inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The novelty of this application of mass spectrometry to jade was reported in the Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports. Conclusions: Isotopic fine structure analysis can yield elemental compositions for ions composed of base isotopes together with stable isotope intensities arising from ions with one and two additional neutrons. The analysis is challenging as jade is a multiplicity of similar solid solutions; thus, a multiple isotopic fine structure approach has been explored. Attempts to compose ensembles of atoms, of those elements found normally in coloured silicates, to match the observed ion mass/charge ratios were unsuccessful without the addition of multiple hydrogen atoms. The production of polyatomic ions of siliceous material may permit impinging fine glass coatings onto construction materials for protection against fire and weather.
Nondestructive analysis of alterations of Chinese jade artifacts from Jinsha, Sichuan Province, China

Abstract:Jade, which is one of the most characteristic materials constituting Chinese artifacts, signifies cultural differences between ancient Chinese and western civilizations. One of the most important typical characteristics of ancient jade artifacts recovered through archeological excavations is color alterations due to human activity and natural weathering, which has led to an area of intensive research in archeology. "Alteration" refers to chemical component and structural changes in jade artifacts caused by human activity and natural weathering, which is different from the term in geology. In this study, Raman spectroscopy was used to analyze six color alterations on ancient jade artifacts unearthed from the Jinsha Site in Sichuan Province, a region famous for artifacts with colorful alterations. The colorful alterations were observed to originate from corrosion products of bronzeware. The green, black, yellow, blue, purple, and white alterations were due to malachite, tenorite, pyromorphite, azurite, diaboleite, and cassiterite, respectively. Meanwhile, organic matter and hypertoxic arsenolite were first found on ancient jade artifacts.

Abstract:The lanthanum crystal Cs2LiLaBr6 (CLLB) has excellent scintillation properties for gamma/neutron discrimination. The initial melt with hyper-peritectic ratios (55 < LiBr/mol.% < 61) was found beneficial for CLLB crystal growth. The hyper-peritectic melt would pass though the peritectic point. However, the detailed process was still unknown. Herein, the dendrite growth and peritectic reaction were discovered near the peritectic point in CLLB single crystal ingots for the first time. The mechanism of dendrite growth was analyzed. The Cs2LaBr5-LiBr phase diagram was modified according to these results. The understanding of phase transition and dendrite evolution can guide crystal growth of CLLB and other similar elpasolite crystals.
