Abstract:The technology for autonomous vehicles (AVs) has been advancing rapidly and is expected to cause systematic changes in our modes of travel. An increasing number of studies have explored people's preferences, acceptance, and adoption intention related to AVs in recent years, although AVs continue to be rare in regular traffic. This study reviewed 94 relevant studies from 2016 to 2021 in terms of their research contexts, paradigms, models applied, key influencing factors identified, and future research directions to provide an overview of these studies and summarize the state-of-the-art progress in AV acceptance. The review revealed that the descriptive studies outnumber the experimental ones, and approximately 80% of the reviewed studies focused on private-use AVs. Additionally, the questionnaire survey method was most frequently used to collect data, and a few human factors and ergonomic models were frequently used in the analysis. The proven key factors affecting people's acceptance in the literature and a few research gaps to be addressed in future studies were summarized. Subsequent studies were suggested to achieve more realistic settings through experimental method, and consider user attitude changes by pre- and post-ride or longitudinal researches. The influence of situational properties should be further discovered, and behavioral instead of intentional studies should be focused. The current development of AVs is mainly driven by the supply side rather than demand side; therefore, the findings of this study provide important insights for addressing and improving human acceptance of AVs, which in turn is expected to increase user demand in the future.
