Abstract:Multicomponent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) promise the precise placement of synergistic functional groups with atomic-level precision, capable of promoting fascinating developments in basic sciences and applications. However, the complexity of multicomponent systems poses a challenge to their structural design and synthesis. Herein, we show that linkers of low symmetry can bring new opportunities to the construction of multicomponent MOFs. A carbazole-tetracarboxylate linker of C-s point group symmetry was designed and combined with an 8-connected Zr-6 cluster to generate a low-symmetry MOF, PCN-609. PCN-609 contains coordinatively unsaturated Zr sites arranged within a lattice with three crystallographically distinct pockets, which can accommodate linear linkers of different lengths. Sequential linker installation was carried out to postsynthetically insert three linear linkers into PCN-609, giving rise to a quinary MOF. Functionalization of each linker from the quinary MOF system creates multivariate pore environments with unprecedented complexity.

Abstract:The predictable topologies and designable structures of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are the most important advantages for this emerging crystalline material compared to traditional porous materials. However, pore-environment engineering in MOF materials is still a huge challenge when it comes to the growing requirements of expanded applications. A useful method for the regulation of pore-environments, linker installation, has been developed and applied to a series of microporous MOFs. Herein, employing PCN-700 and PCN-608 as platforms, ionic linker installation was successfully implemented in both microporous and mesoporous Zr-based MOFs to afford a series of ionic frameworks. Selective ionic dye capture results support the ionic nature of these MOFs. The mesopores in PCN-608 are able to survive after installation of the ionic linkers, which is useful for ion exchange and further catalysis. To illustrate this, Ru(bpy)32+, a commonly used photoactive cation, was encapsulated into the anionic mesoporous PCN-608-SBDC via ion exchange. Photocatalytic activity of Ru(bpy)3@PCN-608-SBDC was examined by aza-Henry reactions, which show good catalytic performance over three catalytic cycles.

Abstract:Terminal ligand exchange and framework linker exchange have been frequently practiced as powerful tools to functionalize reticular structures such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Herein, we report the postsynthetic modification (PSM) of a 6-connected layered MOF (hxl topology) to achieve a 12-connected fcu framework. In the PSM process, isometric linker exchange in the layers and linker installation between adjacent layers by the substitution of modulating ligands happen simultaneously. Snapshots of PSM at different time points reveal that the hxl domain is adaptively reorganized to create sites for new linker installation, and gradually the fcu domain dominates the crystal. Detailed kinetic analysis suggests that, although adaptive linker installation requires interlayer expansion of stackings in situ, it is kinetically faster than isometric linker exchange in the layers.

Abstract:The ligand exchange technique is a common method for postsynthesis isoreticular structures of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). Here, an interesting framework transformation after linker exchange was realized by simply controlling the substituent length of organic ligands. 1H NMR spectroscopy of the digested samples indicated full ligand exchange in bulk Cd-MOF samples. In the target Cd-MOFs, all the substituents of the ligands orient to the inside of the hexagonal open channels. With the shortening of the substituent length, the size of the open channels gradually increased, and the air-stability of the structures became poor, which led to the structural transformation of Cd-MOF. Strikingly, the Cd-MOF structure with the largest pore size could complete the structural transformation soon even though in the mother liquor.

Abstract:Isoreticular expansion of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) by linker elongation often leads to interpenetration or other undesired structures. Here we report a sequential linker labilization and reinstallation method to expand the unit cell dimensions of MOFs while manipulating the framework structure and interpenetration. A stable Zr-based MOF was initially synthesized as a template. Subsequently, labile linkers with imine bonds were post-synthetically introduced into the structure to destabilize the Zr-MOF. Eventually, gradual dissociation of the imine-based linkers and reinstallation of longer linkers into the defective spaces lead to the formation of non-interpenetrated isoreticular Zr-MOFs with progressively increased pore sizes. Similarly, lattice contraction can also be realized by incorporating shorter linkers. In addition to providing a powerful tool that yields control over the structures and functions of MOFs, this work also highlights new opportunities by combining the dynamic covalent chemistry with coordination chemistry in MOFs.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted much attention not only because of their diverse framework structures but also due to their interesting properties as well as potential applications in varied fields. The rational design and fabrication of MOFs with desired structures and properties are important but still a challenge. Generally, the construction of new MOFs is mainly by mixing metal salts/clusters and organic ligands via a conventional reaction process. However, the conventional reaction process is not always available for the targeted MOFs. In this review, we will highlight the postsynthetic methods based on stepwise reactions including metal-ion metathesis, ligand exchange, and sequential linker installation, which has been proven to be powerful for fabrication of desired MOFs that are not available by direct synthesis.

Abstract:A major goal of metal-organic framework (MOF) research is to control the structures and functions of materials in accordance with their specific applications. However, due to the flexible coordination modes between metal ions and organic linkers in MOFs, it is still challenging to rationally assemble a framework with deliberate structures and desired functional groups. Sometimes, two or more phases coexist in a one-pot reaction, making them difficult to separate. To this end, sieving and purification of MOF mixtures become vital for the following application. Herein, we demonstrate that the formation of zirconium-based MOFs (Zr-MOFs) can be regulated in a wider two-dimensional scale by thermodynamics using auxiliary linkers. The auxiliary linkers favor the formation of the targeted Zr-MOF by selectively binding to its coordination vacancies and therefore increasing its formation enthalpy to achieve the sieving of MOF mixture. Furthermore, the resulting mixed-linkers MOFs not only maintain porosities but also contain the installed auxiliary linkers as chemical handles to further incorporate functional groups, providing the possibility of introduction of active sites through post-modification. Finally, this synthetic strategy was applied to assemble a cooperative catalytic system in a MOF platform for CO2 cycloaddition with epoxides. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of sieving and functionalization of MOFs through insertion and post-modification of auxiliary linkers.

Abstract:Unlike inorganic crystals, metal-organic frameworks do not have a well-developed nanostructure library, and establishing their appropriately diverse and complex architectures remains a major challenge. Here, we demonstrate a general route to control metal-organic framework structure by a solvent-assisted ligand exchange approach. Thirteen different types of metal-organic framework structures have been prepared successfully. To demonstrate a proof of concept application, we used the obtained metal-organic framework materials as precursors for synthesizing nanoporous carbons and investigated their electrochemical Na + storage properties. Due to the unique architecture, the one-dimensional nanoporous carbon derived from double-shelled ZnCo bimetallic zeolitic imidazolate framework nanotubes exhibits high specific capacity as well as superior rate capability and cycling stability. Our study offers an avenue for the controllable preparation of well-designed meta-organic framework structures and their derivatives, which would further broaden the application opportunities of metal-organic framework materials.

Abstract:Zr6-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with tetratopic organic linkers have been extensively investigated owing to their versatile structural tunability. While diverse topologies and polymorphism in the resulting MOFs are often encountered with tetratopic linkers and Zr6 nodes, reports on phase transitions within these systems are rare. Thus, we have a limited understanding of polymorph transformations, hindering the rational development of pure phase materials. In this study, a phase transition from a microporous MOF, scu-NU-906, to a mesoporous MOF, csq-NU-1008, was discovered and monitored through in situ variable temperature liquid-cell transmission electron microscopy (VT-LCTEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and in situ variable temperature powder X-ray diffraction (VT-PXRD). It was found that the microporous- to-mesoporous transformation in the presence of formic acid occurs via a concomitant dissolution-reprecipitation process.

Abstract:In this Frontier article, we provide a brief overview of recent progress in the new organic component installation in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) by single-crystal to single-crystal transformation. We discuss the criteria for the MOFs which could provide accessible vacant sites for new linker installation. We highlight three different categories of linker installation based on the nature and the roles of the new linkers. The present challenges and future opportunities in this field are also discussed.

Abstract:Incorporating low-valent metals as nodes in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is orthogonal to the commonly accepted strategy to robust and porous structures. The electronic structures of low-valent metals are chemically unique and have driven the successes of organometallic chemistry. The translation of these properties into MOFs is largely impeded by the lack of generalizable synthetic approaches. Metal carbonyls are bona fide low-valent and volatile synthons, which, by partial chemical substitution may tether ditopic ligands into MOF architectures. We herein demonstrate the formation of CO2 adsorbing MOFs from the direct vapor-phase substitution of CO by ditopic 4,4′-bipyridine at Mo(0) and W(0) centers, which allows facile coating of low-valent MOFs onto substrates such as indium tin oxide. We envisage this strategy could be generalized to a multitude of mono- and polynuclear metal carbonyls, paralleling the diversity of conventional MOFs.

Linker Installation: Engineering Pore Environment with Precisely Placed Functionalities in Zirconium MOFs

Abstract:Precise placement of multiple functional groups in a highly ordered metal-organic framework (MOF) platform allows the tailoring of the pore environment, which is required for advanced applications. To realize this, we present a comprehensive study on the linker installation method, in which a stable MOF with coordinatively unsaturated Zr6 clusters was employed and linkers bearing different functional groups were postsynthetically installed. A Zr-MOF with inherent missing linker sites, namely, PCN-700, was initially constructed under kinetic control. Twelve linkers with different substituents were then designed to study their effect on MOF formation kinetics and therefore resulting MOF structures. Guided by the geometrical analysis, linkers with different lengths were installed into a parent PCN-700, giving rise to 11 new MOFs and each bearing up to three different functional groups in predefined positions. Systematic variation of the pore volume and decoration of pore environment were realized by linker installation, which resulted in synergistic effects including an enhancement of H2 adsorption capacities of up to 57%. In addition, a size-selective catalytic system for aerobic alcohol oxidation reaction is built in PCN-700 through linker installation, which shows high activity and tunable size selectivity. Altogether, these results exemplify the capability of the linker installation method in the pore environment engineering of stable MOFs with multiple functional groups, giving an unparalleled level of control.

Abstract:A sequential solvent-assisted linker exchange (SSALE) method was used to contract the unit cell dimensions of an interpenetrated layer-pillared Zn-MOF. The 15.3 angstrom N,N '-di-4-pyridylnaphthalenetetracarboxydiimide (DPNDI) pillar was replaced stepwise by 9.4 angstrom trans-1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethene (BPE) and 2.8 angstrom pyrazine (PYZ). Notably, the sequential transformations lead to more than five times reduction in the linker size, which is the largest change in linker size by the SALE method so far.

Abstract:A series of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) (PCN-606-OH-TPDC, PCN-606-OMe-TPDC, PCN-606-OH-EDDB, and PCN-606-OMe-EDDB) are synthesized through linker installation onto open sites of 8-connected Zr-6 clusters in PCN-606-R (where R = -OH or -OMe) parent frameworks of differing flexibilities. The two postsynthetically installed linear linkers possess slight differences in length and bulk, which result in a noticeable difference in the installation temperatures, reflective of a different thermodynamic barrier to incorporation into PCN-606-R The X-ray crystallographic data as well as the N-2 adsorption properties of these four newly produced MOFs are explored and compared to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the implications that this difference in linker size and bulk have during insertion into flexible MOFs.

Abstract:Due to their unique structures and exceptional physical and chemical properties, metal-organic framework (MOF) materials have garnered extensive attention in various fields, including catalysis, separations, sensing, and optics. Compared with powders or bulk MOF materials, MOF thin films exhibit large vertical and horizontal dimensions, higher specific surface areas, and abundant active sites and undergo facile combination with other functional centers for adsorption/separation, catalysis, and photoelectronic device applications. Among the methods used in preparing MOF thin films, the vapor phase approach enables more effective growth of MOF films with controllable thicknesses, uniformity, and compatibility; thus, it has attracted significant interest. This extensive review presents four vapor-phase approaches for preparing MOF thin films: the steam-assisted conversion method, vapor-phase transformations of metal oxide templates, vapor-phase linker exchange, and the atomic layer deposition/molecular layer deposition method. We summarize the advantages and disadvantages of these different vapor-phase-based methods for thin-film preparation, aiming to promote their use in precise and controllable surface syntheses.
