Abstract:Heat stress harms human health, agriculture, the economy, and the environment more broadly. Exposure to heat stress is increasing with rising global temperatures. While most studies assessing future heat stress have focused on surface air temperature, compound extremes of heat and humidity are key drivers of heat stress. Here, we use atmospheric reanalysis data and a large initial-condition ensemble of global climate model simulations to evaluate future changes in daily compound heat-humidity extremes as a function of increasing global-mean surface air temperature (GSAT). The changing frequency of heat-humidity extremes, measured using wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT), is strongly related to GSAT and, conditional upon GSAT, nearly independent of forcing pathway. The historical ∼1°C of GSAT increase above preindustrial levels has already increased the population annually exposed to at least one day with WBGT exceeding 33°C (the reference safety value for humans at rest per the ISO-7243 standard) from 97 million to 275 million. Maintaining the current population distribution, this exposure is projected to increase to 508 million with 1.5°C of warming, 789 million with 2.0°C of warming, and 1.22 billion with 3.0°C of warming (similar to late-century warming projected based on current mitigation policies).

Abstract:As the world overheats—potentially to conditions warmer than during the three million years over which modern humans evolved—suffering from heat stress will become widespread. Fundamental questions about humans’ thermal tolerance limits are pressing. Understanding heat stress as a process requires linking a network of disciplines, from human health and evolutionary theory to planetary atmospheres and economic modeling. The practical implications of heat stress are equally transdisciplinary, requiring technological, engineering, social, and political decisions to be made in the coming century. Yet relative to the importance of the issue, many of heat stress's crucial aspects, including the relationship between its underlying atmospheric drivers—temperature, moisture, and radiation—remain poorly understood. This review focuses on moist heat stress, describing a theoretical and modeling framework that enables robust prediction of the averaged properties of moist heat stress extremes and their spatial distribution in the future, and draws some implications for human and natural systems from this framework. ▪ Moist heat stress affects society; we summarize drivers of moist heat stress and assess future impacts on societal and global scales. ▪ Moist heat stress pattern scaling of climate models allows research on future heat waves, infrastructure planning, and economic productivity.

Abstract:Significance Extremely hot weather can have deadly human consequences. As the climate warms, the frequency and intensity of such conditions are expected to increase—among the most certain negative impacts expected under global warming. Concerns about dangerous climate change have encouraged the international community to commit to limiting global temperature changes to below 2 °C above preindustrial. Although lauded as a great achievement to avoid dangerous climate change, we find that, even if such aspirations are realized, large increases in the frequency of deadly heat should be expected, with more than 350 million more megacity inhabitants afflicted by midcentury. Such conclusions underline the critical role for ambitious adaptation alongside these climate change mitigation targets.

Abstract:A preview of how effective behavioral, biological and technological responses might be in the future, when outdoor conditions will be at least 2°C hotter than current levels, is available today from studies of individuals already living in extreme heat. In areas where high temperatures are common-particularly those in the hot and humid tropics-several studies report that indoor temperatures in low-income housing can be significantly hotter than those outdoors. A case study indicates that daily indoor heat indexes in almost all the 123 slum dwellings monitored in Kolkata during the summer were above 41°C (106°F) for at least an hour. Economic constraints make it unlikely that technological fixes, such as air conditioners, will remedy conditions like these-now or in the future. People without access to air conditioning will have to rely on behavioral adjustments and/or biological/physiological acclimatization. One important unknown is whether individuals who have lived their entire lives in hot environments without air conditioning possess natural levels of acclimatization greater than those indicated by controlled laboratory studies. Answering questions about the future will require more studies of heat conditions experienced by individuals, more information on indoor versus outdoor heat conditions, and a greater understanding of the behavioral and biological adjustments made by people living today in extremely hot conditions.

Abstract:With increased global warming, heatwaves are expected to become more intense, frequent, and persistent. Although the spatiotemporal characteristics of heatwaves have been extensively studied, the vast majority of these studies have solely used near-surface air temperatures, particularly daily maximum temperatures (T max ), to identify heatwaves. Given that air temperature alone proves inadequate as a metric for human heat stress. Here, using the relative threshold in conjunction with the absolute threshold and basing it on wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT), we develop a novel definition of human-perceived heatwaves. The combined effect of temperature and humidity is considered in this definition. On this basis, we quantify the climatology of and long-term changes in heatwaves in China based on homogenized in situ observations and outputs from climate models participating in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6). The results show that the distribution of human-perceived heatwaves coincides with densely populated areas in the southeastern part of China, despite their limited spatial extent. The observed trends in human-perceived heatwaves have accelerated since the 1960s. It is now anticipated that moderate or worse human-perceived heatwaves will affect more than half of China's population. Moreover, CMIP6 climate projections suggest that the percentage of China's population exposed to historically unprecedented human-perceived heatwaves would increase rapidly in a warmer future, except for the sustainability scenario. It is noted that the increase in severe human-perceived heatwaves is more rapid than that in severe traditional T max -based heatwaves, suggesting that the hazard of heatwaves to humans may have been underestimated by previous T max -based studies. Our findings demonstrate the urgent need for additional planning and adaptation actions beyond the framework for short-term disaster reduction frameworks currently in place. Although we concentrated on China in this article, our method for evaluating human-perceived heatwaves is easily extended to handle comparable issues everywhere.

Abstract:Global change includes a substantial increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme high temperatures (EHTs), which influence insects at almost all levels. The number of studies showing the ecological importance of EHTs has risen in recent years, but the knowledge is rather dispersed in the contemporary literature. In this article, we review the biological and ecological effects of EHTs actually experienced in the field, i.e., when coupled to fluctuating thermal regimes. First, we characterize EHTs in the field. Then, we summarize the impacts of EHTs on insects at various levels and the processes allowing insects to buffer EHTs. Finally, we argue that the mechanisms leading to positive or negative impacts of EHTs on insects can only be resolved from integrative approaches considering natural thermal regimes. Thermal extremes, perhaps more than the gradual increase in mean temperature, drive insect responses to climate change, with crucial impacts on pest management and biodiversity conservation.

Abstract:Most studies projecting human survivability limits to extreme heat with climate change use a 35 °C wet-bulb temperature (T w ) threshold without integrating variations in human physiology. This study applies physiological and biophysical principles for young and older adults, in sun or shade, to improve current estimates of survivability and introduce liveability (maximum safe, sustained activity) under current and future climates. Our physiology-based survival limits show a vast underestimation of risks by the 35 °C T w model in hot-dry conditions. Updated survivability limits correspond to T w ~25.8–34.1 °C (young) and ~21.9–33.7 °C (old)—0.9–13.1 °C lower than T w = 35 °C. For older female adults, estimates are ~7.2–13.1 °C lower than 35 °C in dry conditions. Liveability declines with sun exposure and humidity, yet most dramatically with age (2.5–3.0 METs lower for older adults). Reductions in safe activity for younger and older adults between the present and future indicate a stronger impact from aging than warming.

The Heat Index as a Measure of Future Heat Stress with Climate Change

Abstract:The wet-bulb temperature and wet-bulb globe temperature (WBGT) have been widely used to forecast the physiological consequences of extreme heat associated with climate change. Unfortunately, those metrics are not based in any physiological model of thermoregulation, which means their values do not map one-to-one onto physiological states. In contrast, the widely used heat index is based on a model of human thermoregulation: each value of the heat index maps onto a unique state of the human body. This mapping is obscured in practical applications of the heat index, which use the National Weather Service's empirical fit to values tabulated in Robert Steadman's seminal 1979 paper. In addition, that empirical fit is used, without scientific justification, to extrapolate the heat index to high heat and humidity, where Steadman's paper gave no values because of an apparent failure in the underlying physiological model. In recent work, Steadman's model has been extended, allowing the heat index to be calculated for extreme heat and humidity while retaining full backward compatibility. This reveals that the extrapolation used by the National Weather Service underestimates the heat index during severe US heat waves by as much as 10 degrees Celsius. For example, the peak heat index at Chicago's Midway International Airport was underreported by 9 degrees Celsius during the July 1995 heat wave, which killed hundreds of people. This correction has important implications for physiology: these corrected values reveal that even walking in the shade would have brought a healthy person close to the point of hyperthermia. This highlights how close global warming is to making the most severe US heat waves a fatality risk for even young and healthy adults. Global warming increases the proportion of more damaging heat extremes

Abstract:Extreme heat events often result in considerable harm to both ecosystems and human populations. Heat extremes arise from diverse processes, resulting in heatwaves with distinct characteristics and therefore potentially strongly varying impacts and trends. Relying on the surface energy balance decomposition of temperature, we categorize terrestrial summer heat extremes from 1979 to 2020 into four types: Sunny-humid (36.5%), Sunny–dry (24.5%), Advective (25.0%), and Adiabatic (14.0%). Sunny-humid and Sunny-dry heat extremes are characterized by high-pressure systems and diminished cloud cover, resulting in heightened solar radiation. However, they diverge concerning soil moisture and latent heat fluxes. Conversely, the latter two types emerge from advective heating due to anomalies in the horizontal wind and adiabatic heating from air subsidence, respectively. Both are correlated with an upsurge in downward longwave radiation. Sunny-dry and Advective heat extremes lead to more detrimental effects on terrestrial ecosystem production (reducing net ecosystem uptake by 0.09 gC/m2/d and decreasing maize yield by 7.6%) and human health (raising the thermal stress index by 8.6 K and increasing human mortality by 3.3%), respectively. State-of-the-art climate models (CMIP6) generally replicate the relative proportions and the geographical distributions of the four types of heatwaves but tend to underestimate the Advective heatwave days. Under a high emission scenario (SSP585), the proportion of Sunny-dry and Advective heat extremes increases by 3.4% and 1.5%, respectively, while Sunny-humid and Adiabatic heatwave days decrease by 3.2% and 1.7%, respectively. This suggests, on top of the already expected increase in heatwaves, additional heat stress on both terrestrial carbon uptake potential and human populations. Our findings underscore the importance of distinction among different types of heat extremes and their impacts, paving the way to develop tailored adaptive.

Abstract:Abstract Extreme heat is increasingly being acknowledged as a serious hazard to human health, through a combination of physiological responses to heat, expressed as dry and wet bulb temperatures, and personal factors. Here we present an analysis of the diurnal variability of dry and wet bulb temperatures using station data in South Asia during both regular and heatwave days. We find that diurnal cycles differ, with the daily maximum wet bulb temperature occurring several hours after the daily maximum dry bulb temperature. Using radiosonde profiles, we show that the timing and amplitude of the diurnal variability of wet bulb temperature can be explained by changes in boundary layer depths and water content. Physiological thresholds for uncompensable heat stress were exceeded even in the evenings, many hours after dry bulb temperature peaks. Cumulative exceedances occurred in 105 instances, corresponding to at least 300 hours of exposure to uncompensable heat stress in South Asia between 1995 and 2020. We conclude that physiologically relevant thresholds provide a more robust way to estimate health impacts, and that wet bulb temperature alone is insufficient as an indicator of hazardous heat.

Abstract:The role of atmospheric humidity in the evolution of endotherms' thermoregulatory performance remains largely unexplored, despite the fact that elevated humidity is known to impede evaporative cooling capacity. Using a phylogenetically informed comparative framework, we tested the hypothesis that pronounced hyperthermia tolerance among birds occupying humid lowlands evolved to reduce the impact of humidity‐impeded scope for evaporative heat dissipation by comparing heat tolerance limits (HTLs; maximum tolerable air temperature), maximum body temperatures (Tbmax), and associated thermoregulatory variables in humid (19.2 g H2O m−3) versus dry (1.1 g H2O m−3) air among 30 species from three climatically distinct sites (arid, mesic montane, and humid lowland). Humidity‐associated decreases in evaporative water loss and resting metabolic rate were 27%–38% and 21%–27%, respectively, and did not differ significantly between sites. Decreases in HTLs were significantly larger among arid‐zone (mean ± SD = 3.13 ± 1.12°C) and montane species (2.44 ± 1.0°C) compared to lowland species (1.23 ± 1.34°C), with more pronounced hyperthermia among lowland (Tbmax = 46.26 ± 0.48°C) and montane birds (Tbmax = 46.19 ± 0.92°C) compared to arid‐zone species (45.23 ± 0.24°C). Our findings reveal a functional link between facultative hyperthermia and humidity‐related constraints on evaporative cooling, providing novel insights into how hygric and thermal environments interact to constrain avian performance during hot weather. Moreover, the macrophysiological patterns we report provide further support for the concept of a continuum from thermal specialization to thermal generalization among endotherms, with adaptive variation in body temperature correlated with prevailing climatic conditions.

Abstract:Heatwaves describe prolonged periods of excessive heat. The increasing trend in heatwave frequency, duration, and magnitude in a warmer future has been extensively investigated. However, the vast majority of traditional studies on heatwaves consider only the role of air temperature, which is inadequate as a metric for human heat stress. While reported worsening levels in heat stress with global warming are concerning, the changes in heatwaves may not be directly comparable to the temperature increase. The reliable information on future changes in human-perceived heatwaves is still fairly limited. Given this context, we quantified future changes in human-perceived heatwaves in eastern China, where the population is dense and the summers are often sultry, based on dynamic downscaling climate projections and a human thermal comfort index that combines the effect of temperature and humidity. We demonstrated that under the 3.0 degrees C of global warming (similar to late-century warming projected based on current mitigation policies), the frequency, duration, and magnitude of human-perceived heatwaves in eastern China would increase approximately 5, 4, and 20 times, respectively, relative to the reference period (1986-2005). Human-perceived heatwaves are projected to increase more rapidly than heatwaves solely based on the temperature definition, implying that the escalating heat risk for humans may have been underestimated by previous studies. Moreover, extra cautions need to be given to low-latitude regions, where the smallest changes in the mean temperature will probably be accompanied by the most pronounced increases in human-perceived heatwaves. Our results suggest the urgent demand of reducing greenhouse gas emissions toward mitigating persistent thermal discomfort in the future. Although here we focused on eastern China, our approach to assessing heatwaves can also be readily generalized to address similar problems worldwide.

Abstract:Climate change poses a significant occupational health hazard. Rising temperatures and more frequent heat waves are expected to cause increasing heat-related morbidity and mortality for workers across the globe. Agricultural, construction, military, firefighting, mining, and manufacturing workers are at particularly high risk for heat-related illness (HRI). Various factors, including ambient temperatures, personal protective equipment, work arrangements, physical exertion, and work with heavy equipment may put workers at higher risk for HRI. While extreme heat will impact workers across the world, workers in low- and middle-income countries will be disproportionately affected. Tracking occupational HRI will be critical to informing prevention and mitigation strategies. Renewed investment in these strategies, including workplace heat prevention programs and regulatory standards for indoor and outdoor workers, will be needed. Additional research is needed to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions in order to successfully reduce the risk of HRI in the workplace. Wet-Bulb Temperature or Heat Index: Which Better Predicts Fatal Heat in a Warming Climate?

Abstract:The wet-bulb temperature of 35 °C has been widely used as the threshold for human survivability in the field of climate science. However, recent experiments have shown that a person's core temperature starts to rise at a range of critical wet-bulb temperatures well below this threshold. It is shown here why this state of severe heat stress cannot be predicted using the wet-bulb temperature. Instead, it is shown that the recently extended heat index can explain nearly all of the variance in the observed critical combinations of temperature and humidity in those heat-stress experiments. For light and moderate exertion in an indoor setting, the heat index predicts that the critical wet-bulb temperature ranges from 20 to 32 °C, depending on the relative humidity, consistent with experimental results. For the same setting and exertion, the heat index predicts fatal wet-bulb temperatures ranging from 24 to 37 °C. Implications for workability and survivability in populations exposed to extreme heat under climate change: a modelling study

Abstract:Background: Changes in temperature and humidity due to climate change affect living and working conditions. An understanding of the effects of different global temperature changes on population health is needed to inform the continued implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement and to increase global ambitions for greater cuts in emissions. By use of historical and projected climate conditions, we aimed to investigate the effects of climate change on workability (ie, the ability to work) and survivability (the ability to survive). Methods: In this modelling study, we estimated the changes in populations exposed to excessive heat stress between the recent past (ie, 1986-2005) and 2100. We used climate data from four models to calculate the wet-bulb globe temperature, an established heat exposure index that can be used to assess the effects of temperature, humidity, and other environmental factors on humans. We defined and applied thresholds for risks to workability (where the monthly mean of daily maximum wet-bulb globe temperature exceeds 34°C) and survivability (where the maximum daily wet-bulb globe temperature exceeds 40°C for 3 consecutive days), and we used population projections to quantify changes in risk associated with different changes to the global temperature. Findings: The risks to workability increase substantially with global mean surface temperature in all four climate models, with approximately 1 billion people affected globally after an increase in the global temperature of about 2·5°C above pre-industrial levels. There is greater variability between climate models for exposures above the threshold for risks to survivability than for risks to workability. The number of people who are likely to be exposed to heat stress exceeding the survivability threshold increases with global temperature change, to reach around 20 million people globally after an increase of about 2·5°C, estimated from the median of the models, but with a large model uncertainty. More people are likely to be exposed to heat stress in urban than in rural areas. Population exposure can fluctuate over time and change substantially within one decade. Interpretation: Exposure to excessive heat stress is projected to be widespread in tropical or subtropical low-income and middle-income countries, highlighting the need to build on the Paris Agreement regarding global temperature targets, to protect populations who have contributed little to greenhouse gas emissions. The non-linear dependency of heat exposure risk on temperature highlights the importance of understanding thresholds in coupled human-climate systems. Funding: Wellcome Trust.

Abstract:This review examines high-quality research evidence that synthesises the effects of extreme heat on human health in tropical Africa. Web of Science (WoS) was used to identify research articles on the effects extreme heat, humidity, Wet-bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT), apparent temperature, wind, Heat Index, Humidex, Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI), heatwave, high temperature and hot climate on human health, human comfort, heat stress, heat rashes, and heat-related morbidity and mortality. A total of 5, 735 articles were initially identified, which were reduced to 100 based on a set of inclusion and exclusion criteria. The review discovered that temperatures up to 60°C have been recorded in the region and that extreme heat has many adverse effects on human health, such as worsening mental health in low-income adults, increasing the likelihood of miscarriage, and adverse effects on well-being and safety, psychological behaviour, efficiency, and social comfort of outdoor workers who spend long hours performing manual labour. Extreme heat raises the risk of death from heat-related disease, necessitating preventative measures such as adaptation methods to mitigate the adverse effects on vulnerable populations during hot weather. This study highlights the social inequalities in heat exposure and adverse health outcomes.
