Abstract:For the excellent complex and recognition function,cyclodextrins have attracted wide research interest. In order to utilize these special properties of cyclodextrins more effectively, immobilization of cyclodextrins,with specific orientation,upon solid substrate is necessary in many potential applications. This paper summarizes the common methods to prepare monolayer/multilayers of cyclodextrins on solid substrate,including the Langmuir-Blodgett method,Layer-by-Layer technique,and chemical adsorption. These methods are compared and evaluated. The application situation of these systems is introduced. Finally,based on preparations and applications,the future research directions of cyclodextrins monolayer/multilayers membranes are discussed. Improving routine methods and developing simpler methods will be the key research of this area in the future.

Abstract:As a versatile tool in separation science, cyclodextrins and their derivatives, known as emerging functional monomers, have been used extensively in molecular imprinting techniques. The attributes of cyclodextrins and their derivatives are widely known to form host-guest inclusion complex processes between the polymer and template. The exploitation of the imprinting technique could produce a product of molecularly imprinted polymers, which are very robust with long-term stability, reliability, cost-efficiency, and selectivity. Hence, molecularly imprinted polymers have gained popularity in chemical separation and analysis. Molecularly imprinted polymers containing either cyclodextrin or its derivatives demonstrate superior binding effects for a target molecule. As noted in the previous studies, the functional monomers of cyclodextrins and their derivatives have been used in molecular imprinting for selective separation with a wide range of chemical compounds, including steroidals, amino acids, polysaccharides, drugs, plant hormones, proteins, pesticides, and plastic additives. Therefore, the main goal of this review is to illustrate the exotic applications of imprinting techniques employing cyclodextrins and their derivatives as single or binary functional monomers in synthesizing molecularly imprinted polymers in areas of separation science by reviewing some of the latest studies reported in the literature.

Abstract:Cyclodextrins (CDs) are a series of cyclic oligosaccharides formed by amylose under the action of CD glucosyltransferase that is produced by Bacillus. After being modified by polymerization, substitution and grafting, high molecular weight cyclodextrin polymers (pCDs) containing multiple CD units can be obtained. pCDs retain the internal hydrophobic-external hydrophilic cavity structure characteristic of CDs, while also possessing the stability of polymer. They are a class of functional polymer materials with strong development potential and have been applied in many fields. This review introduces the research progress of pCDs, including the synthesis of pCDs and their applications in analytical separation science, materials science, and biomedicine.

Abstract:<p>Cyclodextrin-based polymers (CDPs) are amphiphilic macromolecules owing to their unique structure and the presence of multiple hydroxyl groups. These polymers have become increasingly popular in applications ranging from biomedicine to environmental science. In this review, four types of CDPs are distinguished based on their structural characteristics: cyclodextrin-based polyrotaxanes, grafted cyclodextrin polymers, cross-linked cyclodextrin polymers, and cyclodextrin-originated star/multi-arm polymers. The discussion includes the syntheses and properties of several derivatives of CDPs. In addition to low toxicity, good bioavailability and biodegradability, and the feasibility of inclusion complexation and chemical modification of cyclodextrins, these polymers have prominent advantages, such as stimuli responsiveness and the ability to form well-defined aggregated nanostructures, which make them promising candidates for applications related to controlled and targeted drug delivery. In this review, we have highlighted the evolution, unique types, and properties of various CDPs, which are core aspects that differ from previously published reviews. Additionally, the synergistic effect of cyclodextrin and cross-linking monomers, as well as their use as drug carriers over the past decade, have been emphasized.</p>

Abstract:Cyclodextrin–based porous materials have been widely applied in removing various organic pollutants from water environments, due to their unique physical and chemical properties, like the size–matching effect and hydrophobic interaction. Large numbers of hydroxyl groups in its external structure give cyclodextrin a high solubility in water, but the existence of these hydroxyl groups also endows cyclodextrin with the ability to be chemically modified with various functional groups to reduce its solubility in water and, meanwhile, to develop some novel functionalized cyclodextrin–based porous materials for selective removal of the target organic pollutants. This review focuses on the recent development in the synthesis of cyclodextrin–based porous materials (crosslinked cyclodextrin polymers and immobilized cyclodextrins), as well as highlighting their applications and mechanisms in the removal of dyes, endocrine disruptors, and mixed pollutants from water. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives in related research fields are discussed.

Abstract:Cyclodextrins are glucose macrocycles whose inclusional capabilities towards non-polar solutes can be modulated with the help of other macrostructures. The incorporation of cyclodextrin moieties into larger structures produces five types of new materials: crosslinked networks, functionalized chains, amphiphilic cyclodextrins, polyrotaxanes and nanocomposites. This review presents crosslinking and grafting to prepare covalently-attached cyclodextrins, and applications in the food and pharmaceutical sectors, from an historical point of view. In food science, applications include debittering of juices, retention of aromas and release of preservatives from packaging. In biomedical science, cyclodextrin polymers are applied classically to drug release, and more recently to gene delivery and regenerative medicine. The remarkable points are: 1) epichlorohydrin and diisocyanates have been extensively used as crosslinkers since the 1960s, but during the last two decades more complex cyclodextrin polymeric structures have been designed. 2) The evolution of cyclodextrin polymers matches that of macromolecular materials with regard to complexity, functionality and capabilities. 3) The use of cyclodextrin polymers as sorbents in the food sector came first, but smart packaging is now an active challenge. Cyclodextrins have also been recently used to design treatments against the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Abstract:Cyclodextrins are a family of cyclic oligosaccharides composed of α-(1,4) linked glucopyranose subunits. Cyclodextrins are useful molecular chelating agents. They possess a cage-like supramolecular structure, which is the same as the structures formed from cryptands, calixarenes, cyclophanes, spherands and crown ethers. These compounds having supramolecular structures carry out chemical reactions that involve intramolecular interactions where covalent bonds are not formed between interacting molecules, ions or radicals. The majority of all these reactions are of ‘host–guest’ type. Compared to all the supramolecular hosts mentioned above, cyclodextrins are most important. Because of their inclusion complex forming capability, the properties of the materials with which they complex can be modified significantly. As a result of molecular complexation phenomena CDs are widely used in many industrial products, technologies and analytical methods. The negligible cytotoxic effects of CDs are an important attribute in applications such as rug carrier, food and flavours, cosmetics, packing, textiles, separation processes, environment protection, fermentation and catalysis.

Abstract:The design and construction of polymers with diverse architectures play an important role in the field of polymer science and offers new opportunities for the development of novel multifunctional materials. Cyclodextrins (CDs) are attractive amphiphilic macromolecules that possess hydrophobic cavities and hydrophilic surface. The unique structures of CDs enable the design and synthesis of CD-based polymers with desired structures and functions. In this review, we systematically discuss recent advances on the design, synthesis and characterization of CD-based polymers, such as CD-cored star polymers, CD-threaded polymers and CD-capped polymers, as well as the emerging applications of CD-based polymer materials in such as self-assembled nanostructures, inorganic synthesis, intelligent hydrogels, and cancer imaging, diagnosis and therapy. The review is concluded with an overview of current challenges and perspectives.

Abstract:Due to their unique structural, physical and chemical properties, cyclodextrins and their derivatives have been of great interest to scientists and researchers in both academia and industry for over a century. Many of the industrial applications of cyclodextrins have arisen from their ability to encapsulate, either partially or fully, other molecules, especially organic compounds. Cyclodextrins are non-toxic oligopolymers of glucose that help to increase the solubility of organic compounds with poor aqueous solubility, can mask odors from foul-smelling compounds, and have been widely studied in the area of drug delivery. In this review, we explore the structural and chemical properties of cyclodextrins that give rise to this encapsulation (i.e., the formation of inclusion complexes) ability. This review is unique from others written on this subject because it provides powerful insights into factors that affect cyclodextrin encapsulation. It also examines these insights in great detail. Later, we provide an overview of some industrial applications of cyclodextrins, while emphasizing the role of encapsulation in these applications. We strongly believe that cyclodextrins will continue to garner interest from scientists for many years to come, and that novel applications of cyclodextrins have yet to be discovered.
Preparation and Characterization of Cyclodextrin Functionalized Polydimethylsiloxane Films Via Interfacial Self-Assembly

Abstract:Functionalized surfaces have many applications in areas such as sensor technology, selective adsorbents and controlled drug release. In this paper, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) films functionalized with a layer of cyclodextrin (CD) were prepared by using a facile and practical interfacial molecular self-assembly strategy. The surface and film structures were characterized and confirmed with FTIR-ATR and XPS spectroscopy. The prepared films were also tested for adsorption capacities for molecules of congo red and methylene blue and inclusion capabilities for antibacterial drug ciprofloxacin hydrochloride. For the CD layer preparation, amphiphilic cyclodextrin (am-beta-CD)was synthesized by region-selective modification of the primary hydroxyl groups of (3-cyclodextrin with long aliphatic chains, and then self-assembled on the interface between water and a PDMS organic casting solution. A layer of am-beta-CD molecules was assembled onto the surface of the PDMS substrate via the mechanisms of molecular chain entanglements and hydrophobic interactions, which was confirmed by various characterization techniques. Fluorescent molecular staining experiments indicated that the self-assembled cyclodextrins layer on the PDMS substrate surface mostly retained the ability to include guest molecules. Adsorption tests showed that the functionalized films had a much higher adsorption capacity for the dye molecules than that of bare PDMS films. Inclusion experiments also showed that ciprofloxacin hydrochloride loaded functionlized PDMS films exhibited excellent antibacterial performance, indicating that the films could be used as a reservoir to store small drug molecules. All these results demonstrated that the novel films prepared could have potential applications in various areas, such as drug-loaded system and water purification. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Cyclodextrins (CDs) have garnered significant attention in various scientific and industrial fields due to their unique ability to form inclusion complexes with a wide range of guest molecules. This review comprehensively explores the latest advancements in cyclodextrin chemistry, focusing on the synthesis and characterization of cyclodextrin derivatives and their inclusion complexes. This review examines the biological activities of cyclodextrins, highlighting their pharmacological properties and pharmacokinetics, and discussing their promising applications in drug delivery systems. Furthermore, the industrial utilization of cyclodextrins, including their role in nanomaterials and nanostructured coatings, as well as their potential in environmental remediation, are explored. The present research also addresses the critical aspect of toxicity, particularly concerning cyclodextrin inclusion complexes, providing an overview of the current understanding and safety considerations. Through a multidisciplinary approach, the aim is to present a complete view of cyclodextrins, underscoring their versatility and impact across various domains.

Abstract:In this paper, the structure and properties of cyclodextrins (CDs) with hydrophilic external and hydrophobic internal cavities are presented. For the special molecular structure of CDs, the characteristics and performances of membranes will be improved by introducing CDs and their derivatives into the membrane. The preparation methods and applications of membranes with CDs are reviewed, including separation of isomers, transfer of metal ions, controlled release of drugs, drug detection and analysis, hydrolyzation of esters etc. The study on molecular conduit of CDs is summarized. Based on these reviews, the prospect of membrane with CDs is discussed.

Abstract:Cyclodextrin-based molecular tube is a hollow tubular polymer synthesized by threaded cyclodextrins. Recently, it has received extensive attention since its tubular molecular structure and selective inclusion complexation characteristic with various guest molecules including small molecules and polymers. In this paper, the main properties of cyclodextrin-based molecular tube are introduced and the preparation methods are reviewed and compared with each other in detail. The research about the selective inclusion complexation between molecular tube and guest molecules, which include long-chain aliphatic and aromatic compounds is elaborated. The assembling mechanism and influencing factors of complexation are discussed. The applications of molecular tube in self-assembled monolayers, artificial chaperone and potential applications in constructing of novel self-assembly supramolecular architecture are summarized. Finally, the future research directions and problems to be solved in this area are suggested.

Abstract:The diversity of cyclodextrins and their derivatives is increasing with continuous research. In addition to monomolecular cyclodextrins with different branched chains, cyclodextrin-based polymers have emerged. The aim of this review is to summarize these innovations, with a special focus on the study of applications of cyclodextrins and their derivatives in nano-delivery systems. The areas covered include nanospheres, nano-sponges, nanogels, cyclodextrin metal-organic frameworks, liposomes, and emulsions, providing a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of the design and development of nano-delivery systems.

Abstract:Cyclodextrin has a unique hydrophobic cavity and hydrophilic outer surface. The membrane formed by cyclodextrin polymerization has high permeability to both polar and non-polar solvents. Through interfacial polymerization, cyclodextrins can be arranged in an orderly manner to form a membrane with well-defined sub-nanometre channels. In 2022, the sub-nanometre channels in cyclodextrin membranes were visualized, providing ample confidence for precise channel design and precise molecular sieving. This article reviews the development of cyclodextrin membranes in the past decade from the aspects of interfacial polymerization, classification, performance improvement, and application. The focus was on introducing methods to improve the selectivity, permeability, chemical stability, anti-fouling, and chlorine resistance of cyclodextrin membranes. Finally, some issues and development prospects in the application of cyclodextrin membranes were discussed. We hope this review can provide guidance for the development of high-performance membranes to meet the urgent need for sustainable separation.

Abstract:Cyclodextrin (CD) derivatives have recently gained worldwide attention, which have versatile advantages and restrained the defects of parent CDs. The superior properties of CD derivatives in encapsulation, stabilization, and solubilization facilitate their application in food, biomedicine, daily chemicals, and textiles. In this review, the preparation, classification, and main benefits of CD derivatives are systematically introduced. By introducing targeted groups into the parent CD molecule, they exhibit significant improvement in their required characteristic. Besides, the important point closely related to application, the safety assessment, has also been highlighted. Most tested CD derivatives have been verified to be relatively safe in a limited dosage. Then, the applications of CD derivatives have been described in detail from the food to its related field. In food field, CD derivatives play an important role in the stability and bioavailability of bioactive compounds, control flavor release, and improve the antimicrobial and antioxidant properties of packaging materials. These advantages can also be expanded to the related field, offering innovative solutions that enhance product quality, human health, and environmental sustainability. This review highlights the broad applications and potential of CD derivatives, underscoring their role in driving advancements across multiple industries.

Abstract:Key PointsCyclodextrins are cyclic oligomers of glucose that have a significant number of applications in the pharmaceutical industries.Water-soluble cyclodextrins can form inclusion complexes with small molecules and portions of large compounds that have limited aqueous solubility to provide improved bioavailability of drugs.Here, we outline the structures and properties of the most relevant cyclodextrins for pharmaceutical applications, review the history of cyclodextrin use and describe several possibilities for future applications, review the history of cyclodextrin-containing polymers and end with a discussion on the use of cyclodextrin-containing materials for gene delivery.Cyclodextrins and materials containing cyclodextrins are likely to find increasing usage in a growing diversity of pharmaceutical application, most notably those involving macromolecular therapeutics.
