Abstract:Three 1,3,5-triphenyl-2-pyrazoline-based sulfonium salt photoinitiators (PIs) were synthesized, and the relationship between their molecular structures and photophysical and photochemical properties under one/two-photon irradiation were presented. The sulfonium salts had absorption peaks from 343 nm to 372 nm that overlapped the emission of 365-425 nm light-emitting diode (LED) light sources. The energy levels of molecular orbitals were closely related to the quantum yield of photoacid generation (Phi(+)(H)) as determined by the electro-chemical and absorption properties of the PIs, and the introduction of an electron-pushing group could increase Phi(+)(H) due to the enlarged energy gap between the singlet excited states S-1 and S-2. Interestingly, the wavelength dependence of Phi(+)(H) was due to the nature of the transition. The pi-pi* transition showed high Phi(+)(H) values (0.56-0.66) under excitation by UV LEDs, while the pi-sigma* transition showed low efficiency under visible LED irradiation. Intramolecular charge transfer from the pyrazoline ring to sulfonium salts induced efficient photolysis and high Phi(+)(H). The sulfonium salts could efficiently initiate cationic polymerization and free radical polymerization. In addition, their high two-photon absorption cross-sections (delta(780 nm) = 75-105 GM) reduced the threshold of two-photon microfabrication. These PIs should have potential in LED photocuring and two-photon 3D microfabrication.

Abstract:In this work, we have designed and synthesized two hybrid nonfused electron acceptors with a perylene diimide pendant (denoted TPDICPBI and TPDICPBI-C6), where TPDICPBI featured a rigid linker, whereas TPDICPBI-C6 incorporated a flexible linker. It was realized via synthesizing the perylene diimide-containing dibromine compounds and performing the Stille reaction followed by Knoevenagel condensation. TPDICPBI with the rigid linker exhibits a much higher glass transition temperature (T g, 208 degrees C) compared to that (92 degrees C) of TPDICPBI-C6 with the flexible linker, which can be attributed to the rigid linker that limits the motion of both TPDIC and the PBI unit. Then, the two electron acceptors were applied to organic solar cells (OSCs). Devices based on TPDICPBI gave a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 9.91%, and TPDICPBI-C6-based devices showed a reduced PCE of 8.39%. Morphological characterization revealed that both TPDICPBI and TPDICPBI-C6 exhibited overall weak aggregation/crystallization properties. The results suggest that by employing rational molecular engineering to adjust the aggregation/crystallization properties of TPDICPBI, the hybrid electron acceptors will give satisfactory photovoltaic performance.

Abstract:<p>Prolongation of the absorption wavelength of photoinitiator is very important issue but often suffered from tedious synthesis and purification procedures. In this work, by one spot Schiff base condensation of 4-anmino-benzophenone and 4-(dimethylamino)-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde, a benzophenone incorporated Schiff base ligand BPN was prepared. The structure of BPN was well characterized by spectroscopy technology. BPN shows strong absorption among the wavelength of 400 ∼ 500 nm. The initiation efficiency of BPN toward an acrylate monomer under 405/460 nm LED was evaluated by real-time FT-IR technology. The photoreaction between BPN and co-initiator was studied by steady state photolysis, fluorescence quenching, electron spin resonance spin trapping, nano-second transient absorption and cyclic voltammetry techniques. The results showed that BPN had strong interaction with amine co-initiator. This work proves that BPN is an excellent visible light photoinitiator and Schiff base condensation is a reliable way to design novel photoinitiator.</p>

Abstract:Salicylaldimine derivatives are photochromatic dyes which could be easily synthesized from aromatic amine and salicylaldehyde. However, those compounds were rarely reported as photoinitiator. In this work, a salicylaldimine containing benzophenone moiety (BPH), and its boron complex (BPB) were synthesized and carried out as radical photoinitiator under 365/405 nm LED lamps. BPB was never synthesized before. Photopolymerization results indicate that BPB presented better initiation performance than that of BPH. Photolysis experiments showed that BPB reacted faster with co-initiator triethanolamine. The photophysical property and redox potential of BPH and BPB were characterized by using various technique to understand their diverse performance. Results showed that BPB displayed typical triplet absorption of benzophenone, which was not observed in BPH. In addition, BPB presented higher reduction potential, which is also beneficial to its reaction with co-initiator.

Abstract:Five organosoluble visible light benzophenone derivatives (BPs), incorporated different arylamine as electron donating groups have been synthesized and investigated for their roles as photoinitiating systems for free radical photopolymerization of acrylate monomer upon the UV and LED exposure. All the target compounds (BP‐1–5) have confirmed through 1H NMR, HR‐MS/EI‐MS spectra and elemental analysis. BPs displayed red‐shifted absorption, higher molar extinction coefficient and better thermal properties as compared to reference benzophenone (BP) compound. BP and BPs in combination with hydrogen donor, triethylamine (TEA), are prepared and investigated their electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy and photo‐DSC (photo‐differential scanning calorimetry). ESR spectra of BP‐1/TEA package showed the highest radical intensity among the test photoinitiator packages. In addition, BP‐1‐based formulation exhibited the best double bond conversion efficiency than other BPs and comparable to the BP for the free radical polymerization (FRP) of TMPTA under similar UV light source. We then selected BP‐1/TEA and BP/TEA package for FRP under LED light irradiation. Interesting, the BP‐1/TEA system exhibited better efficiency and shorter time at maximum heat flow than BP/TEA. This result indicates BP‐1 photoinitiator not only displays good light harvesting, thermal property, but exhibits conversion efficiency under the irradiation of UV and LED. The visible light benzophenone derivatives (BP‐1–5) have been successfully synthesized as type II photoinitiators. The synthesized derivatives possess a red‐shifted absorption region, better thermal stability, good solubility compared to BP. The BP‐1/TEA system has the best radical concentration, photolysis properties, and comparable photoreactivity.

Abstract:Three novel visible-light absorbing benzophenone-based hydrogen acceptors (BPD-D, BPDM-D and BPDP-D) were designed on the basis of a donor–benzophenone–donor structural backbone. Mono or diketone units and double diphenylamine electron-donating groups in para-or meta-positions were introduced to comprehend the electronic and structural effects on free radical photopolymerization (FRPP). Such a structural change leads not only to a red-shift of the absorption maxima but strongly enhances their molar extinction coefficients compared to the commercial phototinitiators such as benzophenone (BP) and 4,4′-bis(diethylamino) benzophenone (EMK). In addition, excellent melting points and thermal decomposition temperatures were achieved for those novel compounds. Further, the photochemical reaction behavior was studied by cyclic voltammograms (CV), photolysis and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. Finally, benzophenone derivatives in combination with an amine (TEA, triethylamine) as a co-initiator were prepared and initiated the FRPP of trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate (TMPTMA) using a UV lamp as a light source. When used in stoichiometric amounts, the BPDP-D/TEA had the best double bond conversion efficiency among all the compounds studied, and were even superior to the reference compounds of BP/TEA and EMK/TEA. The results and conclusions could provide the fundamental rules applicable for the structural design of benzophenone derivative-based photoinitiators.

Abstract:In this study, four Type II visible-light-absorbing triphenylamine benzylidene ketones ( C1F – C4F ) for radical photopolymerization were synthesized. The design strategy for ketone-cores involved the use of cyclobutanone for C1F , cyclopentanone for C2F , cyclohexanone for C3F , and acetone for C4F . The structures were confirmed by 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR, and mass spectrometry, respectively. The triphenylamine benzylidene ketones had good light harvesting ranging from 350 to 500 nm. In addition, the core effects with alkane or alicyclic rings on the photophysical, thermal, photochemical and electrochemical properties for these compounds were investigated systematically. Finally, the photopolymerization experiments demonstrated that trimethylolpropane triacrylate (TMPTA) monomer can be initiated for photopolymerization by triphenylamine benzylidene ketones ( C1F – C4F )/triethanolamine (TEOA) photoinitiating systems under UV, nm and nm exposures. Particularly, C4F based formulation exhibits the best double bond conversion efficiency under UV and nm exposure. On the other hand, C1F based formulation exhibits higher photoreactivity under nm irradiation condition. This work thus demonstrates the introduction of different cores into the benzylidene, which can fine-tune the photopolymerization characteristics and let these novel photoinitiators promising candidates for industrial applications.

Abstract:Driven by the growing demand towards low cost and environmentally friendly curing processes, the synthesis of visible light absorbing photoinitiators has been a significant research direction in the field of photopolymerization in the past couple of years. Herein, a novel synthesis route is introduced to obtain a bifunctional pyrrole-carbazole-based photoinitiator (ECMO) via one-step reaction. On account of its excellent absorption at 405 nm and the ability for hydrogen donation, ECMO can initiate free radical polymerization upon visible light exposure and forms colorless photopolymers. Notably, ECMO is further able to act as sensitizer for triarysulfonium salts and significantly extends the absorption window of the onium salts into the visible light spectral region. ECMO sensitized triarysulfonium salts show superior curing performance in cationic polymerization (e.g. higher final monomer conversion) compared to conventional isopropylthioxanthone/triarysulfonium hexafluorophosphate systems. In addition, thermogravimetric analysis shows that ECMO possesses exceptional thermal stability, which facilitates its practical application in photopolymerization processes.

Abstract:Carbazole structures are of high interest in photopolymerization due to their enhanced light absorption properties in the near-UV or even visible ranges. Therefore, type I photoinitiators combining the carbazole chromophore to the well-established phosphine-oxides were proposed and studied in this article. The aim of this article was to propose type I photoinitiators that can be more reactive than benchmark phosphine oxides, which are among the more reactive type I photoinitiators for a UV or near-UV light emitting diodes (LED) irradiation. Two molecules were synthesized and their UV-visible light absorption properties as well as the quantum yields of photolysis and photopolymerization performances were measured. Remarkably, the associated absorption was enhanced in the 350–410 nm range compared to benchmark phosphine oxides, and one compound was found to be more reactive in photopolymerization than the commercial photoinitiator TPO-L for an irradiation at 395 nm.

Abstract:In this work, six bis-chalcone-based photoinitiators (1E,4E)-1,5-diphenylpenta-1,4-dien-3-one (DKE-1), (1E,4E)-1,5-di(naphthalen-2-yl) penta-1,4-dien-3-one (DKE-2), (1E,4E)-1,5-di(anthracen-9-yl)penta-1,4-dien-3-one (DKE-3), (1E,4E)-1,5-di(pyren-1-yl)penta-1,4-dien-3-one (DKE-4), (1E,3E,6E,8E)-1,9-diphenylnona-1,3,6,8-tetraen-5-one (DKE-5) and (3E,6E)-1,9-diphenylnona-3,6-dien-1,8-diyn-5-one (DKE-6) were synthesized by Claisen-Schmidt reaction. The influence of different polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon structures and unsaturated groups on the maximum absorption wavelength, solubility and migration properties of DKEs was studied. It was found that with the increase of the number of benzene rings for DKE-1 to DKE-4 and the introduction of CC, CC bonds for DKE-5-DKE-6 in the molecular structure, the absorption wavelength gradually red-shifted to the visible region, the maximum absorption wavelength of DKE-4 and DKE-6 was 442 nm, 395 nm respectively. Besides, DKE-5 and DKE-6 can effectively solve the problem of poor solubility. Three-component photoinitiating system of DKEs/iodonium/amine presented efficiently photopolymerization and the double bond conversion can reach >80 %. DKEs have shown certain photobleaching properties, indicating that it can be used for deep curing of coatings. In addition, DKEs have low migration, the migration ratio of DKE-4 was low to 0.7 %.

Abstract:In this work, a new series of naphthoquinone‐based photoinitiators are presented. Excellent photoinitiation capabilities under blue‐light LED@405nm irradiation are found. In controlled tests, the polymerization performance is equal to or better than that of common commercial Type II photoinitiators (2‐isopropylthioxanthone and benzophenone). 3D printing experiments using the developed photoinitiating system are also carried out. In this work, new naphthoquinone‐based photoinitiators are synthesized and applied for the first time in free radical photopolymerization. In the presence of acrylate monomers, these PIs display excellent photoinitiation capabilities under blue‐light LED@405 nm irradiation in a two‐component photoinitiating system in which the additive is a common iodonium salt (bis‐(4‐tert‐butylphenyl)iodonium hexafluorophosphate ‐ Iod) or a tertiary amine (ethyl 4‐dimethylaminobenzoate ‐ EDB). In controlled tests, the polymerization performance of dye4/Iod is equal to or better than that of common commercial Type II photoinitiators (2‐isopropylthioxanthone and benzophenone). Meanwhile, only a trace amount of photoinitiator is required (as low as 0.05%) to initiate the photopolymerization. It is worth noting that some of these compounds can also be used in one‐component photoinitiating system (monocomponent Type II behavior) and exhibit high photoinitiation ability. A series of complementary characterization analyses of two new naphthoquinone dyes (i.e. dye 1 and dye 4) with very similar chemical structures are carried out to investigate the relevant photochemical mechanism. Finally, 3D printing experiments are carried out by a simple and convenient Direct Laser Write (DLW) technique.

Abstract:Developing high-performance photoinitiation systems with high sensitivity is of great significance in one/two-photon polymerization. Especially, photoinitiators with rapid photobleaching effects, deep curing abilities and potential for two-photon lithography have great commercial prospects. However, such photoinitiators often require complex organic synthesis, thus having relatively limited varieties. Double benzylidene ketone is widely used as a high-performance dye and can be constructed through a one-step classical aldol condensation reaction. The optimization of its structure often involves introducing extended conjugated structures or different terminal substituents. However, the synergistic impacts of side substituents with different electron effects are rarely studied. Here, six novel carbazolyl double benzylidene ketones with tert -butyl on the terminal position and F atom or N , N -dimethylamino groups substituted at the side position on conjugated structures are designed and prepared to explore the structure–activity relationships. Notably, results show that introducing electron-donating groups at both positions can effectively induce a redshift in the absorption spectra of molecules, and the introduction of an electron-withdrawing F atom on the side position induces impressive photobleaching during photopolymerization under visible LED irradiation. Moreover, CZs/MDEA with PETA exhibit fast writing speed and excellent nano-patterning capability under 780 nm laser in two-photon polymerization (TPP) and have potential applications in 3D microfabrication technologies.

Abstract:High-performance photoinitiators (PIs) are essential for ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) light emitting diode (LED) photopolymerization. In this study, a series of coumarin ketoxime esters (COXEs) with electron-donating substituents (tert-butyl, methoxy, dimethylamino and methylthio) were synthesized to study the structure/reactivity/efficiency relationships for substituents for the photoinitiation performance of PIs. The introduction of heteroatom electron-donating substituents leads to a redshift in the COXE absorption of more than 60 nm, which matches the UV-Vis LED emission spectra. The PIs also show acceptable thermal stability via differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). The results from real-time Fourier transform infrared (RT-FTIR) measurements indicate that COXEs show an excellent photoinitiation efficiency for free radical polymerization under UV-Vis LED irradiation (365-450 nm); in particular, the conversion efficiency for tri-(propylene glycol) diacrylate (TPGDA) polymerization initiated by COXE-O and COXE-S (4.8 × 10-5 mol·g-1) in 3 s can reach more than 85% under UV-LED irradiation (365, 385 nm). Moreover, the photosensitization of COXEs in the iodonium hexafluorophosphate (Iod-PF6) and hexaarylbiimidazole/N-phenylglycine (BCIM/NPG) systems was investigated via RT-FTIR. As a coinitiator, COXEs show excellent performance in dry film photoresist (DFR) photolithography. This excellent performance of COXEs demonstrates great potential for UV-curing and photoresist applications, providing a new idea for the design of PIs.

Abstract:Two novel visible light photoinitiators 4-(10-methyl-10H-phenothiazin-3-yl) but-3-en-2-one (PBO) and (1E,4E)-1,5-bis(10-methyl-10H-phenothiazin-3-yl)-1,4-pentadien-3-one (BMPPO) were successfully designed and synthesized. PBO and BMPPO have broad absorption range from 350 to 500 nm with the maximum absorption wavelength at 400 nm and 440 nm respectively. Three-component photoinitiating system of BMPPO/iodonium/amine was developed for free radical polymerization of acrylates. The results demonstrated that the photoinitiating system displayed rapid polymerization and high final vinyl group conversions under the irradiation of UV-LED (365 nm), blue LED (440) nm and solar light resource. Moreover, photopolymerization kinetics was studied by real-time FT-IR spectrum, the double band conversion was achieved up to 90% for BMPPO. The photocuring mechanism was identified via steady state photolysis and electron spin resonance spin-trapping experiments. The possible photoinduced mechanism of PBO and BMPPO in the presence of a co-initiator occurred through electron transfer. In addition, BMPPO possesses rapid photobleaching and good biocompatibility performance tested by photoinduced degradation and cytotoxicity experiments respectively, which exhibited that BMPPO has potential for light-color coatings and food packaging field.

Abstract:Sustainable carbon dots comprising surficial oxime ester groups following homolytic bond cleavage exhibit potential as photoinitiators for traditional free radical photopolymerization. Carbon dots were made following a solvothermal procedure from sustainable furfural available from lignocellulose. Surficial aldehyde moieties reacted with hydroxylamine to the respective oxime while reaction with benzoyl chloride resulted in a biobased Type I photoinitiator comprising sustainable carbon dot (CD-PI). Photoinitiating ability was compared with the traditional photoinitiator (PI) ethyl (2,4,6-trimethyl benzoyl) phenyl phosphinate (TPO-L) by real-time FTIR with UV exposure at 365 nm. Photopolymer composition based on a mixture of urethane dimethacrylate (UDMA) and tripropylene glycol diethacrylate (TPGDA) resulted in a similar final conversion of about 70% using either CD-PI or TPO-L. Nevertheless, it appeared homogeneous in the case of compositions processed with CD-PI, while those made with TPO-L were heterogeneous as shown by two glass transition temperatures. Moreover, the migration rate of CD-PI in the cured samples was lower in comparison with those samples using TPO-L as PI.

Abstract:In this work, we employ phenanthroimidazole (PAI), a chromophore with high energy gap and superior light-absorbing ability as a building block to construct photoinitiators (PIs). Four PAI-based PIs, PAI-DBF, PAI-DBT, PAI-TPA and PAI- t Cz, are designed and modulated by a frontier molecular orbital engineering by combining groups with different electron push-pull abilities to PAI moiety, leading to the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) distribution localized on the PAI and arylamine, respectively. The new PIs can initiate free radical and cationic photopolymerization with diphenyl iodonium hexafluorophosphate under 365/405 nm LED irradiation. It is found that PAI-DBF and PAI-DBT show much higher photoinitiating performance because the PAI moiety is the main light absorber and electron-donating (HOMO-controlling) segment, leading to much higher photon utilization efficiency. In particular, the new PAI-based PIs are of large energy gaps without using a strong pull-push structure, which can be used to fabricate high-optical-quality products via photolithography. This work provides a guideline for constructing novel PIs for free radical and cationic photopolymerization.

Abstract:In this work, a series of sixteen asymmetrically substituted bis-oxime esters CCCBOEs bearing different substituents on the oxime ester sides were designed as Type I photoinitiators for photopolymerization experiments done with blue lights (405, 450 and 470 nm) and under low light intensities (use of LEDs as the light sources). These natural product-inspired compounds showed a strong absorption in the visible range and exhibited a fast cleavage of the oxime ester groups upon photoexcitation, enabling to achieve a complete oxime ester consumption within 2 s. By using the above-mentioned light sources, three CCBOEs (namely CCBOE1, CCBOE4, and CCBOE5) bearing alkyl substituents on the oxime ester sides exhibited high acrylate monomer conversions but also good thermal polymerization abilities, evidencing their dual activation modes. By mean of electron spin resonance (ESR) experiments, the formation of free radicals was demonstrated and led to propose a plausible initiation mechanism. The hypothesis of homolytic cleavage of the N-O bond was also supported by the detection of the CO2 absorption peak by Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Initiating mechanism was also investigated by theoretical calculations, enabling to determine which excited state was involved in the cleavage process. Finally, high-resolution 3D patterns were successfully fabricated using the CCBOE5/TMPTA system through direct laser writing (DLW).

Abstract:Three dye-linked photoinitiators with excellent spectral stability in an acid medium were synthesized by the covalent bonding of a coinitiator (tertiary amine) and a benzoyl group or two coinitiators to the phenolic and carboxyl group position of erythrosine B. The combination of the iodonium salt and free tertiary amino used to initiate the free-radical/cationic visible photopolymerization was investigated to acquire the relationship between the structure and performance. The photoinitiating ability of the derivative with the phenolic position bearing a coinitiator was poorer than of the derivative with the carboxyl group bearing one because of the strong back electron transfer of the former. For the derivative with a linked coinitiator on the carboxyl position, the proximity effect between the sensitizer and the coinitiator moiety resulted in an excellent photoinitiating ability for radical/cationic polymerization; this suggested its potential for application. Although radical/cationic photopolymerization could be initiated by the derivative/coinitiator/iodonium salt, the different component ratios between them had different effects on these two polymerizations; this provided useful information for the design of effective photoinitiators for different polymerizations. On the basis of the fluorescence quenching and photopolymerization results, a corresponding synergistic mechanism was proposed. (C) 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
Photoinitiating Characteristics of Benzophenone Derivatives As New Initiators in the Photocrosslinking of Polyethylene

Abstract:Two kinds of benzophenone (BP) derivatives, dodecyl-benzophenone (BP-D) and hexadecoxyl-benzophenone (BP-H), used as new photoinitiators have been synthesized by Friedel-Crafts reactions and identified by ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. The kinetic characteristics of photoinitiating crosslinking of BP-D and BP-H comparing with BP in the photocrosslinking of polyethylene (PE) in the melt and their compatibility with PE resin have been examined by gel content measurement and thermal migration experiments. The results show that these two BP derivatives are excellent photoinitiators, which have better compatibility, less volatility, higher photoinitiating efficiencies. and longer storage time than BP itself. These two new photoinitiators are promising for industrial applications of the photocrosslinking of polyolefins and curing of coats.
